For all of you wanting the plans , they are available Now on my website! Thanks for your patience! dimensionswoodworks.com/2019/11/27/hybrid-roubo-nicholson-workbench/
A refreshing video of a high-quality build without using zillion dollar machinery like so many other UA-camr's. This is inspirational to budget minded woodworkers and shows how it doesn't take much to do quality work. Well done.
I am the Every man! My shop is dirty and looks like a shop not a TV set. I do what i can with what i have and upgrade when possible. I make videos for folks just like you that want to start but aren’t trying to wait until they have this tool or that to go…. Just build stuff! The rest comes in time.
I've been a woodworker for 50 years and with the internet, I've seen my share of "experts" pretending to know everything and being condescending. You have a very easy and professional style to your presentation. You made a lovely bench and chose your design wisely.
I’m far from an expert and i believe that’s a big part of the allure to this craft. You can NEVER know everything! It’s a fun journey to be on and i appreciate those who follow along with me! Thanks for watching!
Can't believe you have built almost the exact bench i've got in my mind, rite down to the retractable castors. watched countless videos over the past year, this is the closest to what I want to build but I really think I am going with a leg vise and the sliding deadman. Still not sure about an end vise option.
It really is the best of the designs i saw out there. Although i will admit that i use the Roubo side FAR more, but when i need the Nicholson side for mostly live edge work, it’s very handy to have that versatility.
Overall it’s a decent table. If you’re not using it for big heavy projects. Its gets unstable when using my jigsaw and handsaw. Table starts to shake and lifts off the ground. Maybe I’m doing something wrong? Also the folding mechanic works great ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxyFZUPFEey-PuqsPMxqaykBhgA1LWxFHh when setting up, but I can’t get the table to fold down. It gets stuck 3/4ths on the way down.
Great bench! I am building what started as a "Paul Sellers" style English bench but have been changing features as I went. I removed the tool well and was going to make a wide (27" or so) solid top laminated top, but ended up gluing together two 12" wide sections (max of my workspace/clamps/ablity to move the top alone) so was thinking of an open center portion like yours, but didn't think of the ablity to create a stop! I was just going to use it as a position to place clamps if needed. A lot of great ideas in this bench I can incorporate into mine!
Glad you found a few ideas to incorporate into your bench! The real idea is to make what works best for your workflow and fits your space. Thanks for checking it out!
I have been a Pipe Welder for 25 years. I love watching others trades perform their work with precision and pride. I am just starting to get into woodworking and you have me pumped up about building a table to start! Thank you for providing this video.
I wish i would’ve learned to weld when i was younger. I’d love to incorporate metal into some of my projects! Thanks for the kind words and go get Woodworking!
My dad had the ultimate workbench in our basement when I was a kid..... The legs were 3" black iron pipe with flanges for feet, and to attach to the underside of top. Top was 3" thick, not sure how it was put together.... a HUGE plumber/multipurpose vice on the front.... You would be hard pressed to find a vice like this anymore.... 3/4" pipe with screwed on balls on either end, 2' long drove the screw. I would have loved to have dragged this thing to Colorado to put in my basement. The bench could NOT be made to move the slightest, no matter WHAT you were trying to persuade in the vice. This cobbled together bench was rather typical of how my dad did everything.... Functional, but a little weird.... and at the time, I considered cheap... I lacked the maturity to appreciate up-cycling and achieving something BETTER than you could get at SEARS.
Thanks Brother, now i have to add the dog holes in the top and make some more accessories, but it’s already making a huge difference in what I’m able to accomplish!
Thanks! I put a lot of work into it especially because I’m hard headed and decided to use all rough cut material to make it. I think it’s pretty good for my first real bench 😉👍🏻
Yeah maybe a bit overbuilt. I definitely made the top too thick. So thick my holdfast won’t work. Guess i got to back-bore the dog holes on the bottom. I picked up a couple Scandinavian holdfast and they work , but take longer than a couple whacks from a mallet to set the traditional holdfast.
Just brilliant! Love the effort you went to, a real work of art. Makes my first still unfinished attempt look pretty pathetic. Wish you lived next door..
Is it possible to have all the additional items you added to the bench listed in the description, with links to where we can get them? i.e. the vice and hold downs...etc...
As a Monday morning quarterback, here goes! For all the work, I would have made legs from multiple laminations.... maybe recover some salvage cutoff of lambeam, if available. Been in the door hardware business and found the finest lumber is still a tree, full of oddities that will tend to warp, twist, cup and otherwise move. For the top, though some will cringe... MDF makes a really good core.... 4 sheets of it, then laminated two inch lumber atop and around all edges is a good option for a perfectly flat, never twisting, non historical, heavy and functional top that will NEVER wear out, or warp. This is also excellent for custom doors that will NEVER warp.
Melamine is your best option if you are going that route. I used local wood from a local sawyer and this bench grew, got sawed, dried and turned into this bench all within a 30 mile radius. I like supporting my local business 👍🏻 and much prettier results in my opinion, but the true moral of the story is just BUILD ! Thanks for watching 😉

Would large locking casters work Instead of the jack casters? Or would they slip under force?
You want the ability to set it on the floor because the force applied from hand tools would make the casters slip.
