The truly amazing thing is that instead of complaining about the harmonizer not working and waiting for it to be fixed, Jacob simply acts as though it was all pre-planned. Incredibly professional.
I LOVE his natural singing voice, and I'm so glad to see him sing naturally under pressure like this + destroy on the piano. All the other musicians were probably all like, "...nice save, kid."
Diederik van Vleuten his name is Peter Lübke, a truly amazing drummer, playing with Pepe Lienhard Big Band since their beginnings in the early eighties. One of the most amazing big bands I’ve ever heard.
Jacob is brilliant, and so very young. You don't have to love everything he does but if you know anything about theory and phrasing you recognize his genius... it's awe inspiring.
Nice how well the camera/editing kept the focus on the performers letting them shine while still allowing a bit of the story of JC's equipment malfunction resolution to be told. When he gets it working right, it is a triumphant moment.
Jacob is brilliant and creative with his mad music tech skills, but I love hearing him stripped back to piano and voice with a great jazz band behind him... man I love jazz horn sections! 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻💫
His talent is mind boggling, by the time he's 40 he'll just be a computer simulating music so advanced only other computers will understand it. 😀 Wonderful to see this kind of musical genius exists, his piano improv is purely magnificent.
He seemed pretty happy when that harmonizer kicked in LOL. But I liked it straight. I wonder who scored that very good horn break after the trombone solo; where the Bass dropped out. I have to say - when the harmonizer finally starts working it reminds me of Derek Smalls finally getting out of the pod in 'Spinal Tap' - too late, Haha...
I'm glad I went to the comment section because in the beginning I was genuinely confused as to the purpose of the keyboard (harmonizer). I've seen so many reviews on them. I want one in theory, but in execution, I would have to improvise like Jacob did. And then I'd wish I had a completely different keyboard to play on. 😂 The piano is nice, though. And he's really good, I found him because of Herbie. Edit: this big band is killing- you don't see as many these days. I'm blessed to get to see Ben's and friends at Baker's Keyboard Lounge.
Great version, but actually I love Peter playing the drums so much! This guy is an awesome drummer, definitely one of Germanys most versatile players on the battery with a long history of experience! 🤘
The Guitar Historian that’s not what he uses it for. If you have not known, he uses huge vocal harmonies a lot in his studio work, and this is the closest he can get to his studio recordings of multiple recordings of him.
I'd approach this (mixing-wise) like Snarky Puppy. Rather a Steinway or Bösendorfer than a Yamaha, much more sub-bass in the e-bass, a fair bit more bass in the snare - it sounds kinda paper-ish-ly above 250Hz. And above all... Please don't use fake stereo plugins... Just pan your stuff correctly and create some natural diversity in terms of panorama. The ammount of artificial delay between L and R is not nice at all with an analytic headphones setup. Performance was great though. After listening to different versions of this intnerpretation I can recommend the one played by the WDR Orchestra. IMHO they got it as right as can be. Don't be offended. Sound is not objective at all. It's all personal preferences.
The harmoniser takes so much feel away from the song I feel. I don't know why he uses it,especially for this sort of groove. The whole band is grooving and the singer kicks in and kills the feel and when the harmoniser comes in ,it kills the feel even more. I might be wrong but he should have stuck to the grand and let someone else sing it 🤔😬
Honestly I don’t think Jacob fits inside of a big band. We’ve seen his music progress and take many different forms and this is one I don’t feel as deep, plus there’s a tension; his normal amazing musical touches just overpower the band or go underneath everything. The lyrics also totally got lost they didn’t accomplish a TON Not the finest balance but idk it seems a lot of ppl enjoyed this, I’m glad it’s simply music and we can all disagree to agree
Keep in mind that Jacob is on the Autistic Spectrum, and that many Autistic persons have a speach delay when they are small children, and thus pronunciation of words can be unusual. His musical ear, and execution are flawless however..... PS. i love that the harmonizer didnt work until further in the performance as that added a new thing lat e in the peice. well done. some things cannot be planned.
some study on perfect pitch and many of his mannerisms lean that way. most persons with perfect pitch are on the spectrum. his brilliant mind is supported by many of the greats in this world in their area of expertise lead to my conclusion. I too am on the Spectrum and see the subtle clues. Autism is not bad, its great for many on the spectrum, there are the negative sides what we dont see unless we are in his life and know im closer than you tube.
Eli, listen to this interview he talkes about tapping and how he does things off the wall and that in many ways he is simple, also in the MIT video you see him on one scene tapping his chest with finger and thumb and at the same time rocking back and forth on his feet.etc. these are all clues to being in the spectrum. ua-cam.com/video/oMGpKrdQeV8/v-deo.html
@@raybankes7668 It is simply not true that "most persons with perfect pitch are on the spectrum". While there is a correlation, about 50% of people with absolute pitch are not on the spectrum. Additionally, one of the most common traits among high functioning autistic people is difficulty with empathy and emotion... which is the opposite of what you see in Jacob. Additionally, many of the physical attributes you ascribe to autistic behaviors are also found in people who are not on the spectrum. The point is... no one can know whether he is or is not on the autism spectrum, but at least from outward appearances, he would not meet the DSM criteria. While I agree that there is absoltuely nothing wrong with being on the autism spectrum, it's inappropriate to make assumptions, particularly when you are stating it as fact, when all you have is conjecture.

His voice is sexy to me. I had an emotional crisis the day he put out Savior because I was getting ready to give him the Hanson boys treatment. However I must respect his wishes because according to him “[he] don’t wanna to be a saviour, no” 🤭
OMG, I think sperimentation=OK but playing out of the key is, as already mentioned, cacophony... BTW this boy is a genius! Maybe just less belly/sperimentation in live concerts...
The truly amazing thing is that instead of complaining about the harmonizer not working and waiting for it to be fixed, Jacob simply acts as though it was all pre-planned. Incredibly professional.
And the truth is: it sounds better without. lol
I love how professional he is facing his harmonizer didn't worked

A special mention for the incredible drummer. 2:20 What a groove! What a snare. In the pocket from the first bar.

I must say that their technical failure proved to be our vocal delight. Then frosting at the end with harmony. Delish! Totally here for it. 🙋♀️
I Wish the montreux jazz festival had better tech support

Super BAnd!!! Jacob's off-tangent adlib on the keys truly amazing
I actually rekon jacob should do more gigs like this without a harmonizer
Ohh the harmoniser dose not work. Well let's kill the piano improv!
I love how JC is trying so hard to get this thing working a the start all while destroying some piano improv and singing
I think the beginning sounded killer without the harmonizer actually.
I would love to see Jacob Collier with this harmonizer together with Bon Iver on stage. They would pull out some sick stuff together.
Wockerable a
Ofuck... That would be the most amazing matchup... and i know Jacob is a fan of Bon Iver
So beautiful. I almost didn't recognise Jacob in a suit.

Chapeau bas Jacob ! Good job despite the harmonizer failure.
Shame the harmonizer wasn't working for the first half because it was killing!
Love how he just fills it out on the piano though! Such an amazing musician.
Oh man that's the reason for his unusual strained face, he was improvising hard.
It was more than half.
