I've been watching MANY of your videos. First - thank you for making these and creating a great entry for so many to get involved with this hobby. Second i learned something recently through many sessions of painting and just realized it on this video. The layers when you paint then on look bright and stark in contrast. However a few minutes later the color blends and dries much less intense. It's a hard thing to learn in how much it changes and waiting to see before hitting the next layer or touching it up further. I love these videos and find it fascinating discovering something new after many months of following your work and testing it myself. The little things can't always be seen or taught, and just come by laying paint down over and over. Thank you for your incredible tutelage to a padwan learner. #jedipaintmaster
another great video thanks, honestly I have been aspiring to your style. been trying to master your layering system, I always had trouble because I didn't really dilute my paints to the right amount. I thought I was by adding water with a brush and thought when it got fluid it was good. I bought a pack of pipettes and now I add water by the drop. 5 drops of water on a drop of paint makes it like water, a consistency i never had before. wish I could post a picture here to show you an ogre I just painted. I finally got it, it looks very much like your finished product on muscular barbarian type minis. I'm now working on normal hero size minis to the same type style. So really thanks so much for making these videos, you are probably the mini painter I look most forward to seeing your new videos.
What size and type of brush(es) were you using in this video? From the curl in the tip in some shots, I assume it was some brand of acrylic brush. Still, I’m pretty impressed at the level of detail you were able to paint with it - good control!
I missed the typical background music that you use. its so soothing. Also would love for you to do some review videos on other paint ranges, such as pro acryl, GW contrast, and others. I know there isnt much incentive to do so but hey, i would still love to see it.
I'm trying to get into miniature painting but don't want to buy too many paints right off the bat, maybe 2-3 shades of each color. Are there any good recommendations of specific shades for a good shade, mid-tone, and highlight?
@@xreev0x The ring itself is just the cleaned up base after he's done painting. It's pretty typical to go back and do a smooth black ring of paint around the bottom edge, it makes the mini look a lot cleaner. The exact base he used I do not know, it looks like it might be a custom base made using a blank rounded lip base from Secret Weapon (it's not the base that came with the mini): www.secretweaponminiatures.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=79_33_75&products_id=340
Gimli-017, I should have read your whole reply, cause it answered it in there, which had basically the same link that I sent. 🤣. Thanks for the help though.
I learned how to say "Drow" .. droooohh .. back in the 80's and early 90's. Then at some point I've been corrected to say drooooww .. though I do prefer the version the way you say it. (even though I read some extensive article about the correct pronunciation).
I'm not going to say you pronounce Drow wrong, just that I died a little inside each time you said Drow lol.
Mark Linton well he did pronounce it wrong, but still Nice painting
Exactly, why do people insist on pronouncing established words incorrectly? Just stupid I guess.
I can’t get enough of your painting! Every one is so good! :)
Looking to paint my first PC, a Duergar so this video was perfect to get the skin tone right. Thanks!

Never leave an unfinished mini! Better to finish it and improve later than to have a constant reminder you have to finish it.
Maybe a Drow house symbol along with bordered trim in the same purple from the front of the cloak would work?
@0:20 ... well... you do.
what was your old favorite red that is no longer available? Also, what do you use to flat varnish?
Just an old bottle of Vallejo Flat Red that aged into a really rich red. Vallejo matt.
I always paint the inside of the cloak's a different color. Great job here.
I feel like I'm watching some guy painting a miniature in a jazz club.
love the cape

Princeton 4050r, likely a #1. Local art store was closed so I was using what I had for as long as possible.
Drow like grow. I like the new jazz music. When adding color over a silver metallic, have you tried contrast paints?
I have not.

Dear Doctor Faust. How would you approach "comicbook style" painting?
You might check out how he painted a warhammer giant to look like a titan from attack on titan.
Reaper makes a Dark Elf Skin triad (9163, 9164, 9165) that seems kind of inline with your purplish tint.
That is one of my favorite paint triads. I use it everywhere, as it’s great for shadowy details.

If still need help lmk
I think you and I are of similar age, how do you deal with not being able to see?
What do you use for your bases to get the big cracked effect like that? It seems to fit too perfect to be slate.
Epoxy Putty or green stuff. I forget which.
What brand miniature is that?
Reaper Miniatures
Gimli-017 what is the round, smooth, ring around the base?

Give me liberty or give me death...painting a literal black fantasy adventurer...
Absolute Cool Love the way you are Teaching me :-))
Excellent tutorial. Is this a reaper bones model or the metal model?
Bones.
@@ThePaintingClinic Was it bones black? It didn't seem as floppy as usual.
@@antiwaifus1325 They're bones black. I have a few of them in my to-do pile. Love the sculpting on them.
Gary Gygax said it rhymes with "cow."
Drow Drow Drow your boat
Dr *OW* that pronunciation hurts! Just go with dark elf and make everyone happy!
Dunmer
:P
IMO, there are two received pronounciations, and yours is one of them. ;)
Forgotten Realms wiki says your pronunciation is not the preferred one.
i'm much more in line with Gygax's pronunciation. Which happens to match the preferred FR pronunciation.
But that didn't exist when we played as kids, so my way has seniority.
"Drow" sounds way better. I always thought "Drow" sounded dumb.
plastickhero, everyone knows that Drow is pronounced just like bow. 🤣
@@xreev0x which bow?
Remember that the big black bird is called a crow. Row row row your boat. Grow up and pronounce it right! 😁

you "learned" wrong. *LOL*
Finally another gamer aside from others in my group who pronounce Drow the way we do. One of us! One of us! Drow bro! 😛
Its not pronounced "drow" its pronounced "drow". :)
hufferou812 just like bow, right?. 🤣
@@victortesla4198 I was being funny, as bow can be pronounced both ways--bow and in "bow and arrow" or bow as in "to take a bow."
drow or drow?
Yes.
I wonder when the outrage mob is going to come after whoever is publishing D&D for making the Drow the bad guys...
I've always pronounced it the way you do, for them keeping score at home.
I'll be another guy: it's pronounced DRAU :)
So much pain watching this video....droo, droo, droo
