Dirt Daily. Building a Tray-bed for my Friend's Wedding. the CJL-10 Part 1

- My friend Tony from Detroit is getting married and I owe him a favor. Actually I owe him a trip to the brewery, but instead I'm bringing the brewery to him! or at least the bar. This might all sound ridiculous, but that's because it is, but watch the episode and hopefully its all clear at the end.
if you want to order those same latches and hinges that I use in this episode go here:

And be sure to visit Steer Smarts if you're building a 4x4 and want to upgrade your steering components.

Fred, you have no idea how many people you’ve helped along the many years you’ve been involved in the industry. Thank you so much.
Story Time with Uncle Fred is the best! 🚙🏜
I remember meeting Tony at a Pikes Peak fan festival a couple years back (Jeep had a huge booth there for some reason). He was such a cool down to earth dude, would 10000% have a beer or 3 with him haha. I nerded out with him over the episodes he was in, and he would not stop talking you up Fred! I'm so glad to hear y'all are still good friends.
Hey Dude! This is Tony Carvallo. Thanks for the kind words! I remember talking to you....Great time. I'd be down with hanging again at Pikes Peak....Cheers dude!
You can also use the 3-4-5 method to determine the right angle - no calculator needed.
If you really start getting into using vintage lumber. One good investment is a small surface planer. Not only will it help flatten it out s bit, but you think the wood looks cool now... After planing it and applying an oil finish you will bring the vintage handsome out of the old wood!
Dirthead Dave would've figured out a way to put airbags on it.
Fred just a suggestion , I would put some angle iron on the top edges of the tail board and sides to stop them bending, if you look at the Toyota bed the hinges are spaced closer to the ends of the side clamps. At 13:21 in. We just call this a tray back. 🇦🇺🍺🍺
fred awesome bed! i have been framing houses for 13 years and the header board you smashed in will need to be pulled back out and trimmed down. your going to need some sort of expansion gap of when the board expands it will severely cup the board and eventually crack straight down the centre with the grain pattern. it will also be extremely annoying cruising down the road on hotter days. the deck boards should have 1/4 inch gap inbetween aswell but i have found that if you keep your cut ends 1/8th short you can push the boards tight together and the boards will acutally shrink in width on their own. a year from now will be 1/4' gap
You must be eye-talian the way you talk with your hands 😂
Fred, you're one of my favorite channels on youtube. I like, subscribe, unsubscribe just so that I can subscribe again... whatever it takes. Thanks for making these vids!
Awesome! Looking forward to this project 👍👍
This flatbed turned out GREAT! I hope your friend was able to see this video. Looking forward to seeing when it's being installed on the vehicle. Definitely a cool idea!
Glad the Ovesco team could help you out with the latches and hinges Fred. Cool build, looking forward to seeing the finished ute.
Geez Fred, I thought my shop was a mess, but, buddy, you got me beat hands down.
its kinda a wreck some days
In my experience, if you have those boards clamped down and they get wet, they will start to relax into the position you want them. Like a good wet from rain that you don’t get in California.
I thought it was a great video, very step-by-step very guided. My only concern would be that there’s no gaps between the boards on the bed for expansion and contraction.
Code1 is my favorite JL build of all time.
Dont forget the simple 3-4-5 method.
Measure 3ft down one side for the corner and mark it. Measure 4ft down the other side from the same corner and mark it. Measure between the marks and if square you will have 5ft. On long lengths, you can double the formula 6-8-10.
Good luck!
I'm digging the musical high speed work footage. The volume is just right so I don't have to turn it down for the music, and back up to hear you talking. I think a Aussie style bed would look sweet on a Comanche, I think the reason you don't see a lot of them in the US is most US flat beds use drop in stake panels over the flip up and down.
Awesome, you found the brackets!!
Interesting to hear that tubesock was meant to be a one and done build. It really became the hero car for DED in the end. That first EJS build got me hooked on DED...also the 4 cylinder limiter bashing in Hawaii while that one guy kept telling you to buy a toyota.
Thank you for the inspiration. I have been debating what I wanted to do for truck box on my old '96 Mazda B-3000 we use on our property/small farm. Nothing special, but I kind of appreciate that it is such a simple machine with everything manual and rubber mats, etc. That said, the box has slowly been returning back to Mother Earth up here in the rust belt and was thinking about something like this vs. a replacement bed or a stake bed. Kind of an excuse to fabri-cobble up some replacement bumpers too. I am a retired sports car racer, so not sure what the motivation is other than I just want to. lol
It is also hard to drill and tap a hole in the seam. Holes will inevitably end up on the seam.
Can't wait to have a beer on that
An easy way to check square is a method called 3,4,5. Measure 3 feet make a mark on one leg measure 4 feet on other leg. The measurement between the marks should be 5 feet.
You can use any unit of measure it will come out the same. Meters , feet , centimeters,
Inches will work but it is not quite far enough away from each other to determine if your measurements are correct.
Good luck thanks for sharing your talents and adventures!!
The best projects are the ones you do for friends :)
You're getting married in Canada? Congrats!!!🎉🎉🎉
Also. That wood looks dry. If it gets wet it might swell up and break if they are too tight. You hammered it in pretty tight. Great job buddy.
Those ants making the wood porous are doing you a solid! That's weight-savings!
Hey Fred, nice dual purpose project/ rig! Cool shirt too Fred's in Kihei is awesome!
Fred if you want to find square. Measure and mark 3 units on one leg, 4 units on the other leg, and the distance between the two marks will be 5 units when square.
It's called the 3-4-5 rule
Sweet bed love the fold down brackets 👍👍
Hay Fred, if you want a bit cleaner and flat inside of the sides and tailgate you could swap out your regular bolts for elevator bolts those you can corse from a semi trailer parts company or shop. They are like a carriage bolt, but the head is flat instead of bulged. If you are taking it to Plymouth Michigan Trailer Equipment in Westland should have them in stock, if you decide to go that route.
Favorite vlog in a long while. ❤some vlogs are just better than others.
I miss Dirt Every Day. Best show Evert..!!
Fred, you’re awesome and you’re doing awesome.
This is gonna be a good one
Could frame the sides with angle iron to force the boards straight. Or aluminum to keep weight down.
Raising the "BAR" for 4-wheelers everywhere
Let's go Fred-O 👏👏👏

Old FJ40 farm truck? 🛻
Fred...easiest way to do square is 3 4 5. Mark 3' or inches on one length, mark 4' on the other...should be 5' between them if square. No math needed!
Try with some vinegar to get rid of the shine galvanized look.
Only comment / suggestion I have is for the side boards. They will expand, and contract with weather. Hope you allowed for that to prevent binding when putting the sides up.
I’m sure it will be able to “self tolerance “ with use either way. Cool stuff brother! Love your banter.
Welding fumes are actually tiny particles, you can protect yourself pretty effectively with a filtering face piece respirator (p100, n95) under your welding helmet. Lots of nasty stuff in welding fumes, be smart, use ppe 👍
Looking good 👍👍
Come up folks…… let’s get Fred to 100k subs!!! Thanks Fred.
Nice job, Fred
3 4 5 is simplest. But Fred, you earlier measured the diagonals - which was likely 99 5/8ths? Anyway, it was cool you used the Pythagorean theorem.
Thanks Paul Harvey!!
Can I suggest a poly urethane of some sort to keep that cool looking wood protected…
I wish I could just call up guys like Fred and ask for a hand in getting my rig done in 4 days instead of 4 years due to the fact no one likes to help other people anymore around here haha but hey I won’t skip any adds for people I appreciate so I’m doing my part! Fred what’s your contact info !!! 😅 been watching you since I was a young buck!
Pythagorean Theorem heats up the shop 😅
Cool build, yer a craftsman dude. Welding in shorts? I know about hot, I'm in Arizona, but how many dingle berries ended up going into your shoes? ( been there) Would have been amusing watching you dance a jig. 😆
Take caution when welding galvanized metals, the fumes are toxic. Should be mentioned so others will be aware
Looks more like zinc plating than galvanized.
Awesome!
Fred why paint it? Let it rust and give it that farm truck look!
okay... there must be a name/category for people like Fred... and myself... that take on projects when others are not completed. a category name. I KNOW YOU ARE ONE OF US TOO. there must be a name because there are too many of us. ball droppers is not really it, because we will finish projects one day.
Can you post links to where you bought the brackets and hardware. Getting a load of square bale hay that is loaded nice is almost impossible on US trucks with their standard box. I really think the Australian beds should an option here. Steel yes but even aluminum.
check the description
@@4xFredWilliams Ah I will need to look at it on my desk top. It doesn't show up on the tablet or phone. Thanks
You might be able to “age” those clasps with some vinegar or Coke.
This is the most boring show yet good show but you need to speed it up a bit
I did speed up some of it! I’ll keep you input in mind for the next one. thanks!
Just say “ Farm “ , Anna Creek is a station more than 5.8 million acres we do not have Ranches in Australia.🍺🍺🍺🦘🇦🇺
