I think a big thing for the political stuff in seasons 4-6 is also the unoriginality of the show. Everything when this show was being aired made fun of Bush Jr. and joked about how the Al Gore timeline would've been better and what not. I'd attribute it more to blind copying than anything else given the rest of the track record of the show

2005 was a breaking point. After 9/11, Bush was wildly popular and mocking him would get you called an unpatriotic traitor. Then he started the Iraq War, which polarized the country and he barely got re-elected. Then, about six months into his second term, there was the disastrous response to Hurricane Katrina, and suddenly it was open season on attacking W. And 2005 was also when Family Guy returned to making new episodes.

S4-6 was a very hot and cold era for FG. While the quality of the writing was definitely on the decline, there were still some absolute classics like PTV and Meet the Quagmires.

Similar to the jokes about "X celebrity is untalented" are jokes about "X woman is ugly." It's offensive, sure, but it's mostly just lazy. Like when Lois called Kate Winslet "the fat chick from Titanic" and Peter responds "that was Phillip Seymour Hoffman." What planet are they living on?

Good job spelling out the contrast between the two "Griffins visit the South" episodes, I've thought for a while that they make a good case study in how the attitudes changed.
I think a key point in the politics changing is that Seth Macfarlane nearly died on 9/11. He took it personally, and it bled into the work when the show came back in 2005. At the same time, he launched the more overtly political American Dad. If you watch Sarah Z's video on Idiocracy, she makes a similar comparison between the good-natured exploration of conservatives in King of the Hill with the cruel mockery of Idiocracy.

I don't think his experience with 9/11 really has much to do with it; like you mention there, Mike Judge had an almost parallel shift from good-natured ribbing to blatant mockery and he didn't have any personal experience with the event. I think Seth, just like everyone else at the time, was just reacting against Bush's increasingly draconian and unpopular policies.
Hell, if 9/11 would have radicalized him you would expect it to do so in the opposite direction, with him being more supportive of the War on Terror. But that didn't really happen.

    • @Jurgan6

Yeah Season 4 of Family Guy is such a interesting season because this season especially the seasons that come afterwards are usually used to judge how Family Guy as a whole, what makes it bad or what makes it good. The idea of a shows later seasons being the identity of a show is such different from other shiws like Spongebob, which most people see its first 3 seasons as its tone and identity. You could use the Simpsons as a argument towards a extent but that evoultion felt a bit more nornal. Family Guy almost became a different show.

In America, there was a huge shift in attitudes toward sex on TV between season 3 and season 4, mostly due to the fallout over the Janet Jackson Superbowl halftime show in 2004. Since then, TV networks grew increasingly risk-averse in terms of the sexual content they would allow. (Even on cable channels which are exempt from FCC content regulation.)

This particular period was where Family Guy was at their absolute funniest after coming back from cancelation. Even though the comedic moments were hit or miss And it lost some of the charm that the early seasons had.

Hard disagree with Brian being better in this era. Family Guy absolutely needs a voice of reason character in its world of madness, and Brian fit that role great in seasons 1-3. This era though shows that Brian is actually a piece of crap and all the stuff about him being the only sane one goes right out the window and he just feels useless now. Brian having flaws is one thing, but these seasons just pushed it too far.

I started watching FG in 03 on adult swim, and when the show FIRST came back it felt like it never left. Looking back, the first few Season 4 episodes could easily fit in the first three seasons without looking too outta place. When I watched 4-6 in real time, the changes were so gradual and sneaky I barely noticed them until like the last half of season 6. IIRC, it was the episodes where Brian tried to sleep with Lois and then when had a human son. Those made me go, “Damn, this show kinda changed”.
Hindsight is crazy, it was like with each new episode they said “make peter a little dumber, make the humor a little darker, make it a little wackier, make the animation a little stiffer etc.. and by the time I picked up on it, it was already a completely different show from the first three seasons. I won’t say I don’t enjoy modern FG but Seasons 1-4 are my go-to and I even got them on DVD.

It's more commonly accepted that "someone high-up" is a fan of their own singing voice, and will use any excuse to shoehorn it in to serve his messed-up ego. Singing with Frank Sinatra (Jr) is the ultimate result. To him, it implies he was good enough to sing with actual Frank, and it's not his fault cos Sinatra's dead. To everyone else it shows that Jr just can't get the bookings like his dad did. Not saying Frank Jr's a *bad* singer, he's just not a great, and lounge music just isn't what it once was.

The "Walt Disney was an anti-semite" jokes always came off so stange to me, because it's so laughably false. It's so easily disproven, even with a google search, yet FG kept insisting otherwise and people just sorta...believed in the gaslighting.
This happens a LOT with Family Guy, for some reason. Like how FG also started the trope of Marcy and Peppermint Patty of the Peanuts as lesbians, despite how canonically BOTH have had huge crushes on Charlie Brown. If anything Marcy was far more outspoken about it, and outright confessed her feelings towards a stunned Charlie Brown. Hell, BOTH have even kissed him at some point! They're about the farthest thing you can get from lesbians, but that never stopped this show from pushing a narrative for cheap jokes.

the Superbowl nipslip is why UA-cam came to be because one of UA-cams founders founded to watch a replayable version of the incident

The only reason it changed is because Seth McFarlane is, and always has been a lazy writer; he relies on shock value and disgust more often than timing, storytelling or character development, and everyone who works under him follows that sloppy model. He might have wit, but he rarely ever uses it in his shows or his movies. Any great comedy writer would school him by saying 'Attitude isn't enough.'

I somewhat agree, but Seth hasn't been the Showrunner since 2003 and he was only credited as a writer for seasons 1, 3 and 4. I agree that he probably came out trying to push the envelope post cancellation, but he can't be blamed for how the show has gone since, especially since his other shows like American Dad and Ted have been mostly consistently praised. (I have only seen Ted, and it's interesting how much of the dialogue sounds like something from Family Guy, but the better direction and character writing clearly elevates it beyond that.

That simply isn’t true, I’m sorry but whenever someone says this you can tell it was just a parroted opinion from another UA-cam video or Twitter thread.
For the most part Seth hasn’t written or show ran family guy since season 5 and he only has big writing credits in 3 episodes in total, he isn’t even close to the reason the show went downhill, the less input he had the worse the show got.
The shows he is or was more intimately involved with (American Dad in the early years, the current show TED and the Orville) are 100% more character focused and have genuinely amazing stories with genuine character development.
Hell the Orville is considered one of if not the best Star Trek series ever and it’s just Star Trek inspired.
Seth shouldn’t try to write movies anymore tho he’s not good with telling one long story there’s no denying that.

Family Guy has been great longer than any other animated series. It finally started to decline this year. Granted, if King of the Hill had lasted as long, that would probably be the funniest-for-longest show
