Why I STOPPED Watching Family Guy (Seasons 7-9)
Across these three videos I've been exploring the story of how I went from loving Early Family Guy, to ceasing to watch the show at all by Season 9. This video explores the final part of that tale. The tragic story of how I fell out of love with Family Guy and ultimately stopped watching it.

How Family Guy CHANGED (Seasons 4-6)
Переглядів 8 тис.Місяць тому
Family Guy started off as a show with a distinct tone and its own unique qualities. However, after the show was cancelled and subsequently renewed, a few changes began to develop. Nowadays Family Guy is considered a very different show from how it started, and this video explores the very beginnings of that change. What EARLY Family Guy Did Differently (Seasons 1-3)

I've spoken before about Family Guy and the Simpsons, but I figured it's time that I made a positive video. Here I look at the early seasons of Family Guy before it was cancelled and see how the show was different in the beginning. This is hopefully the first part of what will at least be a trilogy, with the next two parts looking at the beginning of the show's decline in Seasons 4-6, and then ...
Why the MCU Was a Bad Idea

The MCU had a really good run! There's no denying it! However, did the MCU achieve this because it had a lot of obvious potential to be great, or because the creative team behind it pulled off the near-impossible? In this video I contrast the MCU with other potential cinematic universes and see how the cinematic universe has impacted the characters explored and stories told in this long-running...
How to Do Reference Comedy: The Simpsons vs Family Guy

After my recent video on the Worst Simpsons Episode, I thought it would be nice to look at something the Simpsons does well! So, the question for this video is how does the Simpsons incorporated pop culture references into their comedy, and how does this compare to what we see in the typical comedy of Family Guy? Hope you all enjoy! Credit to the UA-cam channel School of Wok, from whom I got th...
The Missed World Building of Star Wars Droids

After my recent Episode IX rewrite, which took a long time, I decided to do a quicker video based on some observations I made while catching upon a lot of the Disney Stars content I've missed. In this video we explore why aren't droids to be trusted, and does it make sense the way that droids have been employed in the Star Wars franchise so far? I'd argue, no.

Did you find the Disney version disappointing? This rewrite uses Disney's version as a basic template to work from, but makes some key changes to allow for more engaging worldbuilding and more complete character arcs. Eh, by this point Family Guy isn't even really about the characters anymore. Which is why the Simpsons has persisted for decades: it is about the characters. The jokes especially, are jokes th3 characters would make naturally. The characters have changed, grown, or regressed. But they've stayed themselves. Every character in Family Guy is basically Peter at this point.

For the Pulp Fiction reference, The Simpsons scene is distinct enough where it could be its own thing ( Lou is sitting down with Eddie and Chief Wiggum at Krusty Burger and comparing it to McDonalds vs Jules and Vincent diving around, comparing American and European McDonald’s). If it was Family Guy, they would recreate the scene from Pulp Fiction but just have two Family Guy characters dressed up as Jules and Vincent with little dialogue change from the original. Hoping the comedy comes from “our characters are doing this scene, isn’t that whacky?”

Another big part of it is that Family Guy, the show itself is just making a reference, while in the Simpsons the _characters_ are making the reference. Keeping it in-universe doesn't break the flow or suspension of disbelief. Sometimes even the Simpsons will do a cutaway gag, but it's to other known characters doing something instead of a random scene with no lead up or consequence. I was trying to think of how the Simpsons could make the exact same joke with the owl work, and I realized it would be someone watching that on TV. If Homer was sitting on the couch watching Owl & Costello, it would go from just a reference to a joke about Homer being easily entertained, the unoriginality of TV writing, or really anything but "haha owl make noise."

One thing I think you missed is what the two jokes say about Abbott and Costello as performers and comedians. The Simpsons treats them with the respect they deserve by showing how to lesser performers will fail to capture the magic of the original joke. Family Guy implies that you could replace one of them with an owl and it would have the same effect as the original joke. Simpsons treats Abbott and Costello as comedy professionals, whereas Family Guy treats them (and especially Bud Abbott) as replaceable.

5:50 For those that want to nitpick this bit of comparing Simpsons to Family Guy He Loves to Fly and He D'ohs came out on Sept 23, 2007 (Simpsons) Tales of a Third Grade Nothing came out on Nov 16, 2008 (Family Guy) Since it takes at least 6 months to animate an episode of Family Guy, this means that they roughly had 8 months to look at what the Simpsons did, and just out their own twist on the idea, but gave up after the first act. I only noticed that time difference while looking through my TV guide.

As someone who loves Airplane and Naked Gun, the way Family Guy 'referenced' them has always kinda rubbed me the wrong way. At best, it's like they're referencing the joke because they don't have enough good material of their own, and at worst, it's like they assume they can get away with stealing it. The weird thing is, South Park has done similar skits referencing the Dead Parrot sketch and Aristocrats joke, but those actually changed the jokes subtly to make them fit the characters, and they were clearly advertised as referencing them instead of being sneaked into episodes.

Family Guy is referential humor. Part of Peter’s core character is that he watches and himself references a lot of media content. They don’t shy away from making references that people might not have seen. You’ve either seen Amadeus or you haven’t. I’m unmoved by the criticism that Family Guy is “too much cutaway humor” because, yes, it’s a core part of the show. But it’s pretty uninspired to portray Family Guy’s style as “objectively bad” because they “do it wrong”. It’s just different. Sometimes it hits, sometimes it doesn’t. You could easily make an argument that The Simpson’s style is too “mushy” and slow vs. Family Guy’s willingness to quickly detach from the setting of the show and jump back. Or that South Park is too gross and loud and obnoxious. They’re all different styles with different appeals at different times. But you can’t be mad at a tomato sandwich because it has “too many tomatos”.

When I got to the part about Shipoopi, I genuinely rolled my eyes and thought to myself, "Oh come on, tearing down one of the Family Guy classics to get at its sense of humor, this video author clearly just has a grudge against this show." And then you dropped the bomb that it's just a song from something else covered by Family Guy. For years I thought it was just some original Family Guy song, one of their most well received, and it's just stolen from a movie completely removing the context that it's a reference. Fantastic video.

Another important thing with this specific joke is Skinner is funny because he is not funny. He is that guy that would over-explain the joke, like I am doing now. I am Principal Seymour Skinner. Steamed Hams. And to be fair with Abbot and Costello, alot of their material I have heard does follow the following formula: Abbot [the educated one] uses a technical term and Costello [the Homer/Peter common dumbass] misunderstands him for 10 minutes. Another example is "no loafing" where Abbot gets a bakery job making bread and tells Costello about it using insider terms with slang/common meanings. The terms: Dough [which Costello, being in the middle of the Great Depression, takes to mean money] and Loafing [which Abbot uses to describe forming the dough into loaves, and Costello takes to mean slacking off]. the "Who's on first" line: How can you loaf without any dough

I remember my introduction to Family guy, I saw A DVD of it in store once and what caught my eye was a dog that looked like Snoopy and a baby holding a ray gun. My dad came home after work with those DVDs at least a year later and they remained for a week on a stack of other DVDs until I finally asked dad where they come from and he said a friend at work gave them to him thinking he would like it. I suggested we put it on as I was curious about those characters on the cover and right after those amazing opening titles that made me smile widely, I was hooked. Seriously though, whoever owns those DVDs, keep them! They contain the stories you were meant to get, Disney Plus has the TV edits. I lost mine as I kept losing the discs! I just recently checked over the seasons order and I think it declined after that Hanna Montana episode and for my dad, it was screams of silence. I have come back to it with Fighting Irish and the introduction of Wild West but I don't think I can ever forgive them for the abuse of Meg and Brian's terrible 'love life'.

Early seasons of Family Guy is one of my favorite shows all time. Some people look at me like I have 4 heads when I say it. I actually think the show is quite good all the way up to around season 5. Though 2, and 3 are the peak. They're funny without being overly topical. They're heartfelt, passionate, and creative. When people sit down to watch an episode with me, they're always caught off guard by how much they laugh

The worst example of Family guy plagiarism has to be a "Anchors Aweigh" skit. It's a segment where the animator just traced over Jerry mouse dancing with Gene Kelly replacing him with Stewie. There was no joke either, it just happens. They didn't even trace over jerry very well either, you can see Jerry's reflection in the floor the whole time.

Fyi you mention how the UK seasons on Dvd didnt line up with the television releases - this is actually the same in the US but it was made slightly less confusing by the fact that in the US the dvd releases would be called Volumes rather than seasons so as to avoid the confusion. No idea why that didnt carry over to the UK releases.

this is a great comparison of the two. It speaks to the fact that the simpsons has an idea and message overall along with smaller messages in each episode, while family guy is just 20 minutes of funny with a loose plot to follow. Simpsons will always be better than family guy because it has an actual theme behind it

The Home Alone Sendup had a Disappointing payoff, Man With Two Brains had a copout ending, 420 was hit or miss, The OJ Simpson episode alongside Family Gay were just made for Shock Value, and The "Meg becomes a Christian" was just ponderous and self righteous(The ONLY good thing was the B Plot of Stewie hanging out with the TNG Cast). The So called Season 7 was WEAK. S9 2009-10 or "Season 8" had Emmy Winning Road to Multiverse, Dial Meg For Murder, Dog Gone, Brian dating Rita, The Evil Monkey Story Arc coming to a great end, Peter getting Amnesia, the Introduction of Ida, Introduction of Jerome and a pretty funny Season closer after such a brilliant Season premiere.

I think there's a layer to the family guy joke that you've missed, and maybe I'm looking too far into this but since it was Stewie, a baby, who set the joke up, and all he probably knows about Abbott and Costello is the very famous "who's on first" skit. He also probably knows from his children's books that the dog goes woof, the cow goes moo, and the owl goes hoo. So in his baby mind, he has put 2 and 2 together that Abbott must be an owl and thinks people are saying Owl and Costello since they do kinda sorta sound similar.

  • @BrendanPappas
    @BrendanPappas 11 днів тому

The best example I have of how modern Family Guy sabotages its own comedic potential is the first episode of Season 15 when Brian and Stewie start a band. At the end, when Stewie asks who Olivia is going to continue the band with, Brian says “probably some dog we’ve never met” before they show Olivia with Vinny. That joke would’ve been really good if Brian never said that. Instead, it completely ruins the joke by making it fairly simple to guess what will happen. Humor should never be lazy or predictable. Family Guy does both way too often.
