Great presenter, love her encouraging, patient, slow pace of talking and explaining the moves. Thanks.
Thanks for the support! We're glad to be of help :)
Loved this video just 6 weeks into my knee replacement something to aim to
I’ve had my right knee replaced 11 years ago and I have never found kneeling on my knee comfortable. I must say I’ve not tried any of your advice. I’m about to have my left knee replaced in three weeks so I’m certainly going to try these exercises when I start my rehabilitation. Thank you for this advice. Pam Carr.
We are glad to be of help Pam! Let us know how you go with the exercises, and best of luck with your rehab :)
Thanks for this. Really helpful as it's often a question my patients ask and I was never sure what to tell them.
It's our pleasure!
I’m going to give this a try. I have had a bi lateral knee replacement. 2 years ago. Kneeling is basically a no go.
Let us know how you go!
I want to try also the fear of it hurting keeps stopping me....
I’ve had both knees replaced and wasn’t advised to kneel after both. I’d heard of desensitising but wasn’t sure how to go about it. Thanks for great video and will be giving it a go.
We're happy to help, let us know how you go!
Love this. My physcio said I was crazy trying to kneel surgeon impressed. Recently something went wrong I had some sort of seizure held on to doggy gate until it collapsed gate and I hit deck. A long crawl I tried to get to phone to no avail knew I needed help. So I put my secret practice into action managed to get to kneeling position couldn't get up on to bed. I used wooden stairs to get onto bed. Yes it's abit painful but you can do it. Haven't used cushion but will as I wish to be independent. Have had both done.❤
Thank you so much for sharing your story! We hope you are doing well since the incident. Best wishes moving forward, and keep up the exercises to stay strong :)
Thankyou for this video! It is very helpful, and very well explained. This is one area that has been a problem for me too as I have had 3 knee replacements in 2009, 2010 and the right knee again in 2011 (the first was only a half replacement and did not fix my knee pain).
I also found your video on how to get up after a fall very helpful too, as it is extremely painful for me to now put my weight on my knees. I worked hard on my rehab, and can now bend my left knee to about 130 degrees and my right knee to about 110 degrees.
My advice to anyone recovering from a knee replacement (and my Physio told me this) is to "ice it, ice it, ice it" - use 2 packets of frozen green peas in press seal bags, use one at a time, wrapped in a tea towel. Once that one has defrosted, you still have another one that is frozen! The icing helps with the pain before exercises and afterwards too.
Something that you are not always aware of before knee replacement surgery, is that your bad knee pain will definitely be improved, but it is not completely gone. I cannot stand in one place for a long time, without needing to sit down, and I still get aching knees is I have walked around for perhaps a few hours shopping for example. (FYI - I also have an Acoustic Neuroma, diagnosed 21 years ago, so I use a walker when I am away from home, and a walking stick at home).
I have had many falls, and broken a number of bones, including my right femur, left shoulder in 5 places, & left scapula, over the 21 years.
*Best wishes to everyone recovering from knee replacement surgery!!
Thank you so much for sharing your story and experiences! We're glad you are finding our videos helpful. Keep up the hard work with your rehabilitation and exercises!
Thank you have just had knee replacement surgery. This was very helpful for something to try further down the track.
Absolutely, glad to be of help!
Thank you for the excellent suggestions ! I have saved the video for when I have my next TKR (coming up soon).
All the best for your upcoming surgery, and the 12 months of rehab afterwards!! Remember to use ice to lower the inflammation before attempting your exercises, my Physio said to me "ice it, ice it, ice it" and you can read in my comment what he suggested. It helped me a lot x
Thank you for watching and saving the video! Best of luck with your operation and rehabilitation :)
That's good to know! I just thought kneeling was permanently off limits. I''ll work on this de-sensitising because I have avoided kneeling in pilates classes and in the garden.
Happy to help! Thanks for tuning in
I have been avoiding kneeling on both of my TKRs due to sensitivity, but I will now perservere with this progression, without a good knee 😂. Thanks guys
Happy to help!
Thank you. Could this also be used to learn how to bend leg.knee after a hip replacement?
When you are recovering from your hip replacement, we recommend that you follow the guidelines provided by your medical team!
Do these exercises apply if you have had both knees replaced. Second one in March. No pain now but surgeon told me I could never kneel again,
Of course! As explained in the video, kneeling isn't shown to be harmful for prosthetic joints.
Would this advice also work on arthritic knees? I'm finding knee work very painful i.e. in yoga postures. I'm wondering if these suggestions would help me build up tolerance so that I can keep on with yoga.
Absolutely! Let us know how you go :)
I had both my knees replaced at the same time nearly 4 years ago. The scar areas are really sensitive and sore just sitting and putting weight on each knee with my hands hurt. So i cant see myself kneeling. Any ideas to help would be great.
I know where you are coming from - totally!! I have had 3 knee replacements, in 3 years, the first was only a half (goodness knows why my Ortho thought that would work! - It didn't and it was just as painful as a full). I don't know how you managed having both knees done at the same time!! I was given that option, but chose to have one done at a time. Glad I did. My surgeries were in 2009, 2010 & 2011. My knees are better but they still ache if I am standing in one spot for too long...it becomes almost unbearable. They also ache if I have been walking around for a couple of hours. So the knee pain is better that before, but I still get pain, and I still have arthritis in them, which flares up in the Winter especially. Try heat packs when they ache. All the best x
We recommend a gradual approach to slowly increase your pain tolerance, like the variations shown in the middle of the video (~2:00 mark).
How do you get up from kneeling after both kness replacement
Knee
If you are recovering from your knee replacements, we recommend that you strictly follow the guidelines provided by your medical team.
If you've recovered from your operations, you can take a look at this video for floor mobility tips: ua-cam.com/video/HGXFUEM-f7A/v-deo.html
would this still apply after a bout of cppd (crystals in the knee ) thanks
Although we can't provide specific advice without assessing you first, in general we recommend that you use your symptoms as a guide - tolerable symptoms (during and/or after exercise) and you can persist, but beyond tolerable and you likely need to back off.
Of course, if your symptoms are severe and progressive, speak with your doctor!
I have not had knee replacements but find kneeling very painful, no diagnosed problems, maybe this could help me??
Same as me! I’m over 60. The pain is behind both knees as I kneel on the floor. I can’t sit down on my knees anymore! It makes CPR training (required for my job) really difficult! Do you have a video about pain BEHIND the knees ?(not Bakers cyst)
Let us know how you go! A gradual and repetitive exposure can help improve pain tolerance for your joints.
Hi Alicia, I’ve recently had a CMC thumb joint replacement and I’m wondering if I’ll be able to weight bear on my hand for things like a plank or push-up. What would you advise please?
We highly recommend that you follow the guidelines and restrictions provided by your surgeon and in-person medical team!
What if I don’t have knee caps
Although less common now, if you've received a patellectomy, we recommend that you speak with your surgeon regards restrictions and precautions.
Do you have any advice to help with the skin around my knee numb with a painful tingling sensation. Do you think if i massaged it could help it? Also the tendon on the outside of knee just about knee is very hard and painful to touch.
Hi @thinking102, It’s difficult for us to comment on specific individual circumstances as we can’t be there to assess you in person. We would recommend checking with your local physio or GP if you have any concerns. We will keep your question in mind for our future content. Thanks for watching!
