      why did you temper them? Dont you want them as hard as possible so the file wont bite into it? or would that dull the file?

I love working with my hands and I love tools so the way you explain everything and show mistakes or ideas you have is fun to watch while being helpful. At some point I'd really like to own one of your knives because it would be pretty cool to have something you have created. You are getting better and better at knife making and seeing the progression from the beginning is awesome Alex 😎👍

    Doesn't that suck that there are always viewers on UA-cam who think they gets to criticize what ever they want because they've already done it and did it way better than you did. It's a shame that you have to leave a disclaimer at the end of your video to shut these negative people up. Glad you did this tho, this is still your hobby, right? It's an expensive one, so we get the tools that we can afford when we can afford them.

  • @Stillpoint23

    Made perfect sense to me. But I have one question, a novice one at that. I'm curious as to why temper after the quench cycle since the steel already skates the file? Maybe this question was already asked, so I'll take a look at the other comments right quick...

    I was told by a blade smith not to lay pieces flat when tempering. is that a big bad? or is it just a personal preference thing? some people make their knives alot thinner than other people... so that could be the reason why they dont lay them flat when tempering? I am just curious if that can be a deal breaker resulting in the dreaded "ping" sound? i am a newbie to blade-smithing and forging so I have literally never ending questions haha.

    Hey bro ham, when I worked for Boeing we had a drill lubricant called boelube and it came in liquid or stick form, it was great for helping drill holes in titanium, stainless, etc. You should see if you can get your hands on some. Also a true carbide drill is amazing until it shatters lol, we used to use them every day except I wasn't paying for them. Haha comment not related to this video but just wanted to let you know.

    You’re videos are great! And the edge you can put on a knife is insane. I’ve been working on sharpening for a while and have gotten decent at it but can’t get to the hair splitting edge you get. I obviously know that the knife steel plays a part, I’ve watched practically all your videos where you go over this. My two questions are 1. Where you you say the brand/price point starts with a knife capable of holding such an edge without rolling over, the two best knives I have are a Case Trapper with the Tru Sharp SS blades and a USA made Kershaw that I’m unsure of the steel. The case is definitely the one I can get the sharpest but still not quite that sharp. 2. What is your opinion of diamond stones? I don’t recall ever seeing you use one. Thanks!

    • @OUTDOORS55
      @OUTDOORS55  5 років тому

      I use a an extra coarse diamond for profiling. I like it as it stays flat. Cheaper stones will profile almost the same but they dont stay flat. I have a whole set of dmt stones but rarely use the finer grits. I tent to stick with ceramic for the finer grits. Cuts almost the same but will last far longer. I like diamond stones but they wear out pretty fast compared to ceramic. Just my thoughts🤷‍♂️

      haha, yes. My primary goal is to keep the bits cool. Oil gets everywhere, and I use my little shop as a place to epoxy a lot of stuff. Obviously epoxy and oil dont mix, so I use whatever keeps the bits cool without the oil.

    Instead of windex I can use car coolant in a spray bottle and not worry about using oil and getting it everywhere. Plus coolants real cheap like $7 at Walmart for a gallon.

      You can skip the tempering process and a file won't scratch it. Water isn't necessary for 1080 steel (which is what I used).
