The most realistic part of this movie is that someone from Pittsburgh would spray paint “let’s go Steelers” on an overpass
Facts💯😂
But they were in West Virginia that scene
West Virginia is close, lots of Steelers fans. Nutty like here in Pittsburgh. It's Rebellious outside of Allegheny county in all directions.
@@bluejaysfan965 I thought that little town was West Virginia. They saw the overpass before that and they had to drive through Pittsburgh to get to West Virginia. I just figured since it happened before that town, they were in Pittsburgh when they saw it.
lol literally didn't see the 2 bodies hanging from the bridge until the last half second. I was so confused why they were spending time on a bridge with "Let's go steelers" on it
I was totally not surprised to find that instead of a gritty combat movie, it was a movie about journalists making an entire civil conflict about themselves. Classic.
^ this exactly. TY for saying it.
I respect reporters. you know people who do nothing but report the facts.
I despite Journalists and I consider them the source of everything that is wrong with today. Their desire to peddle opinions as facts and their willingness to slant the truth for their own ideals is why the world went to shit.

I agree 100%.
Yep. They had no sides. they were just taking the opportunity during the chaos of war to fulfill their self-righteous idea of "cleansing the country" of foreigners of a nationalities. You see a lot of that during the clusterfuck of civil war.

You've alredy put more in to this story than the writer-director: Alex Garland... 😂 👍
By far the most unrealistic concept of this movie is that journalists are portrayed as courageous and caring about what is both right and true
Did they care about what is right and true? I think they were there for the scoop and happy the president got killed on the spot but before that the guy has to get his final quote no matter how petty and sadistic that came off and the girl her picture of the US president shot in the head. The movie made me sick.
war journalists are generally that way. They went into Syria knowing full well that if captured they would be tortured and murdered on film. Several war journalists have lost their life in the city of Mariupol during Russia's horrible siege.
@@fogellmclovin3740 Loool
@@fogellmclovin3740 Oh no! How awful 🤣
I don't think there's many journalists are anything except actors now...
I liked the movie. But I had a lot of issues with it.
For starters, why was the president just chilling in the Whitehouse? They would have moved him at the first sign of anything like this happening.
Second, who was paying the journalists? Why were they even there? Are they just risking their lives for the artistic element? Unlikely
Third, why was there still power, water, and gas available? Who's driving the trucks and keeping the lights on? Are people still going to work while all this is happening? Unlikely.
A lot of freelance journalists do the story first, and then they sell them after and make their money. Especially photo journalists, which is what they are.
1. Because the military had just suddenly up and surrendered the day before and were probably already advancing too quickly. The f22s that flew over were probably to signify "hey, the president isn't going anywhere in the sky" and it's obvious that a ground convoy is even worse
2. Is there something wrong with them wanting to get the truth out and a story?
3. A good portion of the country was out of the war, they probably just kept functioning like usual and didn't try to support either side and did their usual supply chain
Forgive me for being late to this party, but for your last question, unironically yea.
Contrary to popular perception, in times of war, and even civil war, most of the population will stay put and keep doing what they are doing, unless they are in the line of fire or near the front line.
The reason for this is a mix of security and sunk cost. If the war is not near your home, are you really gonna abandon your job, valuables, and opportunities on the off chance that maybe the war comes to your doorstep?
Some people can yes. But what if you’re a farmer? Not as easy.
And finally, most people don’t like change, and will be very hesitant to the idea of uprooting their entire life, to go somewhere else.
Most will prefer to wait out the war.
We saw this in near every civil war, including our own.
Edit: almost forgot to mention, as for power and resources, that will vary state by state, county by county. It will be in the interest of the federal government, and even rebel ones, to keep power on for their side, while reducing access for the enemy.
@@bc9402 yeah, the Syrian civil war and the infamous cement company that ended up funding a terrorist group is a good example
@@williewilson2250 The entire military just deciding to surrender all at once was the most unrealistic part for me. Like, you're telling me there wasn't a single jet left that could defend the air space above DC? The WF just casually flew right on in. The bugaloo scene with the lights makes some sense when you figure they have a lack of training.

There was also a lack of ear pro in the original Civil War.

Lol holy hell, really?
That's probably what pissed me off more than anything!! These are war journalists, so they've been to war zones, however, they take off into a potential bad situation completely unarmed?!?!

Syrian civil war has tons of journalists that are unarmed completely. Also how they get killed tbh
I’ve never understood the right to bear arms idea that it only applies to what our founders carried in the revolution…..our army and militia forces were equipped with the same style of weaponry in that day and age, so naturally we should have access to a comparable level of firepower as the military by that logic.
Pharisees will twist every word until the law means the opposite. It is a 2000 year old tradition.
Yeah but let’s be fr, don’t mean we should be allowed missiles as well.
@@SanLeMans What is the problem with that?
@@Willy_Tepes if you can’t see it then💀 by that logic we should also get t nuclear bombs, and no offense but if you can’t see why we shouldn’t have missiles then I wouldn’t want you to have a nuclear bomb either.
Yknow if no one is fighting to let civilians have missiles it’s probably for a reason bud
@@SanLeMans Now you are just using the slippery slope argument. What's not to love about missiles, or rockets, or drones, or guns, or even cannons? As long as you are not a criminal, I don't see why the government should be bothered by a population that if proficient in firearms use. I see that as a benefit militarily. The US was based on a militia in the early days. Every able bodied male was part of the militia. This is important to supplement a standing army in war time. Nothing is worse than having to train a lot of people who know nothing and have no experience.
If you are concerned about criminals getting guns, we should solve THAT problem. Just reduce crime. Everyone knows how that is done. Society is to lenient on violent criminals, and governments do little to tackle crime. Sometimes it even seems like they are tolerating and facilitating crime. The social policies and economic policies of the government also create poverty and wealth disparity.
I think the real issue is that corruption goes to the very top of politics, and that is why nothing is done about crime. They are themselves criminals. Maybe that is why they don't want us armed?
I think the point of the vagueness is that you're meant to put your own meaning behind it.
What would drive you to execute your fellow Americans like in this movie?
Like, everyone says "Oh I'll fight a tyrannical government!" but nobody is asking, for what reason would you fight? Be realistic, your not taking up arms because the federal reserve is being idiotic, your not taking up arms because the president can barely speak, so what would you actually drive you to take up arms like in the movie?

It's a movie. Just a movie. If you make things realistic in a war movie then it got pretty boring.
Final battle scene of saving private ryan is loaded with a tons of non senses, but...its awesome and intense! Thats it, it makes a good movie.
My major issue is with the journalist's armor - it looks like theyre all wearing soft 3A armor in an active CQB war zone where everyone is using rifle cartridges. Its like wearing a heavy sweater for protection at that point.
Also, at the end when Mary Jane dies, shes shot with an MP5 - the only weapon in the entire movie that her armor would actually protect her against, and she dies instantly.
You didn't saw that picture of an african insurgent in a gunfight with battle rifles wearing a lifevest? Yes a lifevest you wear to float in water.
My only possible justification for that is they were using AP 63 9mm in the MP5 cause body armor was so damn widespread, but I don't have any clue of that round would do anything against III but it definitely pen IIIA

In the real Civil War, in the battle of Palmito Ranch, TX Confederates and Union soldiers wore the same blue uniforms ... and yes, it was a clusterfvcc
Yeah the same uniforms and similar flags were dropped as soon as they could. I'd imagine this late into the war they would've figured it out
Same at the Battle of Wilsons Creek in Missouri in August 1861. Some Confederate forces still had blue uniforms while others had grey and marched into battle towards the Union forces at a key moment in the battle. Union commander in that area saw the blue uniforms marching towards his position and was hoping beyond hope that they were expected re-inforcements but knew that Union forces should not have been coming from that direction. Once he realized his mistake, it was too late, and the Confederate forces overwhelmed his position, thus losing the battle.
Thank God the Army went (back?) to Scorpion. It'll be be very distinct from Multicam...👀 👀 👀
Signals work.
I noticed marpat on some WF and multicam on others
That part about being distinguishable from your enemy is something that quite a few people surprisingly don't seem to get. Uniforms don't exist just to blend in, but ironically, to stand out. Thats one of the reasons its a war-crime for a armed combatant to either wear their enemies uniforms in an attempt to blend in with them, or just not wear one at all in an attempt to blend in with the civilian population. Either one is a warcrime because uniforms help with determining who is on what side, and who isn't on any side at all.
Also, theoretically the statue of liberty could be a PHENOMENAL recon position. Who the hell would want to attack the statue of liberty after all?
War crime.
The statue of liberty is a piece of tangible cultural property.
Using it for military purposes in any capacity is a war crime, because people don't want to die, so if you're spotting for mortars from the statue of liberty, people are gonna notice and not wanting to die WILL attack the statue of liberty. Same reason you're not supposed to use churches and mosques. If the enemy realises you're using it they WILL attack it.

Well every time I image the secret service they’re just like super cops in suits and thats it, so obviously in the last stand they’ll wear suits. Well Halo has the VISR system for Spartans and ODSTs, which is like nightvision and an IFF system built into the helmet's visor. If we're talking the Halo show then idk, never saw it.
Halo has always had helmet mounted flashlights lmao
You really don’t need NODs if the city lights are still working. NODs would only come to play in areas like alleyways or other low lit areas. Also, the rebel forces are not professional soldiers, they’re just civilians with firearms and the majority of civilians don’t know anything about basic infantry movements/battle drills. They’re winging it.
Why nods are rarely used

What disappointed me was in the end I'm like ok President isn't in the Beast but it's a decoy, President is still inside the building but not, he's for sure gonna be in the PEOC bunker right? Right? What? They dragged him out from behind the Resolute Desk in the oval office???? The fuck?
Yep. That's what I thought too. I'm pretty sure the White House has its own secure bunker. Maybe the director was running out of time and just wanted to end the movie at that point
@@juliomaldonado4028 it does, it's called the PEOC, it's directly underneath the White House and is nuclear hardened and designed for legit end of the world can't bug out on AF1 type things so when that outer perimeter started getting assaulted, the President 'should' have been moved into the bunker and secured while Secret Service continued to fight and try to repell the assaulters but guess hiding under a desk was the go to lol
What disappointed me was your ability to use English effectively
Remember at the end they wanted to reach an agreement for the President's surrender?
They had him close by assuming they'd want him alive to reach a surrender agreement. They didn't consider they were there to just shoot him on the spot.
I think he’s so delusional. That’s why he’s not in the bunker.

Honestly from the breakdown it seems like this would of been better as a tv or miniseries so that you can get the decay of society in a gradual way and can flesh out the conflict. The movie is just "Wouldn't this be shocking?!"
Yeah, a miniseries would have been better. It's like Dune 1984, too much story in too little time.
I actually like the movie quite a bit, but I totally agree that a miniseries could've done the concept more justice.

14:00 I think it’s obvious: a segment of the American military did not blink when ordered to deliberately target civilians with airstrikes. Anyone in the military that didn’t defect or desert after the reality of such an action hit home are probably not viewed in any redeemable light.
Facts, you seen what the Chechens did to the Russians during the first round, that’s what would happen to them if it ever came to it, our numbers are to high
Exactly. I think that’s what caused half the country to leave the union in this universe. The president in this film seemed like a maniac.

Yes. Ppl don't see how many statists/yes men are in the force. At least 1/3rd of the total force, and 90% of leadership would be wrong side.
The problem is they don't explain any of that in the movie. They're lightly sprinkling real politics while simultaneously trying to seem "neutral"
thats really disappointing that they didnt give any back story as to why there was a civil war. i think all of us wanted to know wtf would make texas and cali work together lol

One thing I’ll say is outstanding in Civil War is the sound. Hands down some of the best sound design I’ve ever heard in action scenes.
The movie is essentially a retelling of Apocalypse Now. The director calls it a "roadtrip movie" but each stop the journalists make is a visit with insanity; the journalists are Willard except they're not out to kill the object of their quest.
One thing to note about coups and keeping the leader alive: anyone with understanding of modern doctrine would understand that keeping that leader alive is so important. The leaders of a movement like this would never issue a kill order because having even a kangaroo court trial and forcing the leader to formally renounce leadership goes a long way to securing power after the conflict is over. If the leader dies, diehard supporters all around the country might be more emboldened to rally around the martyred leader.
Che Guevara was captured with the help of the CIA. The CIA told the local troops not to kill him but they did it anyways. The same went for Saddam Hussein. There has always been a disconnect between the troops and the commanders in that regard.
Who knows, maybe they will then pull an Iraq 2003 and alienate the remaining loyalist military instead of doing a reconstruction like Lincoln did. Pretty much just keeping the war going.
Leftist director wet dream.
Fairly sure they took the reference of gaddafi for this
We don't have the exact details, but they DID intentionally off Osama Bin Laden, when it seems like they could have done a capture, and such a capture could have provided a lot of closure for a lot of people, so there are counter examples to the capture choice.
Best depiction to me with “War in your back yard” is The Patriot. Hands down.
Entertaining, but as historically accurate as this Civil War movie.
MW2(the good one from 10+ years ago) and Homefront were also pretty good in that regard, at least they were fun!
The movie takes too many liberties and lies too much to be enjoyable for me
No, it’s not.
the patriot kinda sucks in everything other than plot and americana
One reason i watched was seeing Washington DC as a warzone brought 2009stalgia of MW2 with the "Of their own accord" mission where you fight your way to the white house hell yeah
My favorite part was the Boogaloo boys doing boogaloo stuff
i think it stayed vague in the explanation of "how we got here" because it doesn't want to tell THAT story, they just wanted to portray what it would look like AFTER we already got through that.
Yeah, I think teaming California and Texas together was a big, flashing sign saying, "This isnt the 2nd Civil War that you were expecting. "
we all know how we got here ..now here is here lets move on to how its going ..and what to do about it and how to do it and to who to do it to

The conflict looks in between a coup and a full scale civil war, maybe 2 or 3 months from start to president killed. I have two hypothesis, either is a coup planned by the Alliance that found tougher resistance than expected and got messy, or a retaliation for an escesive use of force by the goverment and then coup.
The movie should have been named “objective lense” or “Parallax” or something due to the audience seeing as much info as the camera photo can portray. It was professional clickbait to get butts in seats. It had nothing for fun nerds, nothing for narrative story enjoyers, and nothing for political pundits. It was basically a Seinfeld episode of “war is bad mmmmmkay”

I think the scene with the crazy dude with the red shades was one of the most informative and powerful of the movie. I'd say it's helps explain the plot more than anything.
I think people are missing the reason for the lack of backstory and explanation of why there is a war.
1) A major point is that on the ground, fighting is not political, and people are just fighting to survive. This was obviously spelled out in the sniper scene, but for some reason a lot of people missed it
2) (Maybe a stretch) The movie is treated similar to how western directors have treated movies about conflicts in the third world. Obviously to someone who lives in the USA, the Civil War in this movie seems like a massive oversimplification, but this is the case for most war movies. People only realize the oversimplification because this movie is about the US
Call of Duty World at War demonstrated what a battle should look like. Those Berlin and Reichstag missions were awesome.
What battle should look like? Call of Duty is an arcady shooter game but yes the battles were awesome and I don't doubt the Soviet-German battle became that up close to each other they resorted to melee fighting.
And also the Japanese Theater sections where the Americans are trying to assault Okinawa and Conquer Shuri Castle.
World at War was so insanely good.
@@jerry12314But.... that's exactly what the battles were like in WWII. Just look at the battle of Malawi footage. Philippine marines stormed alleys, streets, and buildings shooting down insurgents as they come
Try Killzone 2's final battle in Pyrrhus, now THAT is a setpiece, now that I think about it, most of the Killzone series' large scale battle sequences were really good.
Killzone Shadowfall's VSA bombing also scores pretty highly I'd say.
It's basically a natural disaster movie given how little "motivation" is given to the war
motivation ..where have you been for 20 years or the last 4
You'd have a point if, at any point, the movie really showed any sort of political attunement of either side, but both groups (federalist and rebels) get so little real characterization that you can't say the rebels are democrats and federalist are Republicans, or vice versa. The movie tries to make it out to be government totalitarianism without regard to motivations, which kinda just falls flat as "government bad" on its own. So basically, you can't apply real world political unrest because it just straight up doesn't apply in the movie.
except theres nothing natural about whats taking place

i was certainly expecting a more narrative story about the two sides of the conflict but i think point or moral of the story was shown in that line from the Mary Jane Watson character when she said "every time I sent a photograph home i thought i was sending a warning not to do this here". A lot of people glorify the idea of a civil war and wanting to tear the system down but like you said in the beginning of the video, as you get older you realize there really is so much to lose and we shouldnt want a war here in our own homes
Agreed. Was hoping to see some flashbacks or more story of how the Civil war came to be. I guess, they tried to avoid that to make it less political but I felt the story was just bland.

Agree - the title is bad
Because the director is from a family of journalists and made this as a love letter
They're more of a character that remains neutral to some degree and are there so that the audience doesn't just feel like they're a camera being dragged around through a civil war, we're actually there with them

GenZ and late term Millennials are all waiting to get married in their 30's now. There are a LOT of guys in their 20's who aren't looking to start a family which means a whole lot of manpower available to fight interstate. We're also seeing fairly large gaps starting to happen in the military as it continues to fail its recruiting goals over and over.
