  • The hotbulb, or hot bulb engine or vaporizing oil engine is a type of internal combustion engine. It is a surface ignition engine in which the superheated fuel is ignited by being brought into contact with oxygen-rich fresh air, rather than by a separate source of ignition, such as a spark plug.
    It was perfected by Herbert Akroyd Stuart in the end of the 19th century. The first prototypes were built in 1886 and production started in 1891 by Richard Hornsby & Sons of Grantham, Lincolnshire, England under the title Hornsby Akroyd Patent Oil Engine under licence. It was later developed in the USA by the German emigrants Mietz and Weiss by combining it with the two-stroke engine developed by Joseph Day. Similar engines, for agricultural and marine use, were built by Bolinder in Sweden. Bolinder is now part of the Volvo group.
    The engines were usually one cylinder, four-stroke units, although following Mietz & Weiss' developments in the USA, 2-stroke versions were constructed.
    Lanz Bulldog:
    The Bulldog was a simple and easily maintained vehicle due primarily to its simple, single cylinder, horizontal, two-stroke, hot bulb engine. Initially the engine was a 6.3 litre, 12 horsepower unit, but as the Bulldog evolved the engine was increased to 10.3 litres and 55 horsepower. While hot bulb engines were crude, they were easy to maintain and could burn a wide variety of low grade fuels - even waste oils. The engine was designed by Fritz Huber.
    The Bulldog was similar to other European hot-bulb tractors that were being produced around the same time. Some of these examples are the SF Vierzon from France, the Landini tractor from Italy, and the HSCS from Hungary. The Field Marshall that was produced in England, was a similar design to the Bulldog hot-bulb engine with the exception of an internally designed vaporing plate which replaced the conventional externally located hot-bulb, this internal design required ignition papers in place of the external blow lamp to start the engine.

    Fun facts:
    Hot bulb engines can run at 0 rpm!
    The odd shaped exhaust is designed to prevent glowing particles being blown in the air and possibly causing fire.

    Beautiful machines. Most are, I guess, in their "historical configuration".
    BTW The fact that anti-roll-over cage was not in use for so damn long is really baffling to me, even though thousands of people were injured or killed rollover accidents every year in US and A alone, and it was a problem considered serious even back in 1920. Only in 1959 Sweden introduced a proper legislation and US in 1967, and even then it took several decades for it to really gain traction.
