Was a real treat seeing someone react to The Ultimate Enemy not knowing the twist. Usually folks either grew up with the show or had the twist spoiled as it's one of the most famous episodes of the series.

The reason why Dark Danny lost was because he was holding back against Danny since he believed that if his past self was killed then he wouldn’t exist anymore. Though with the changes to history Dark Danny now exists outside of time so if he manages to escape the thermos he'll be free to fight Danny at full power.
Dang i didnt know that why cant they reboot the show and have that come back they litterally left so many things unturned whyd they have to end it dans defeat was so underwhelming for me the story there and show is so underrated

Also because of the Ghostly Wail. The Ghostly Wail is both of Danny’s most powerful attack, and it’s capable of taking down entire cities, and Dan took that to the face 2 times in a row.
I hope they reboot it 10 years later in this new universe and older Danny escapes to fight the new older Danny.
Ghostly Wail is one of the few powers Danny is known to have that Vlad does not have.

I absolutely love that they left what happened to Danny's human self up to the imagination. Nothing is scarier than what the mind can make up....Also need to make an edit to give David Kaufman (the voice actor for Danny) MAJOR props cause that scream he lets out after Phantom merges with Plasmius is HAUTNING even as an adult.
It's one of the few cases where it being on a kids network actually enriched it. He's definitely not still alive, but like you said, the mind can conjure far more frightening ideas. It's similar but opposite too why Deathstroke was called Slade in OG Teen Titans, couldn't have a villain with death in his name, although how they managed too have Trigon there, is my guess.

Given how prone too protests and boycotts the Baptists are and how much money/influence they have/weild, we're lucky we got it.

Dark Danny aka Dan Phantom is one of the most badass ghosts in this entire show. Everything from his design, backstory and voice just oozes malice and it's awesome. And he introduces one of the most awesome powers in his Ghostly Wail. Can we talk about The Box Ghost man leveled up he got a wife,a kid and got jacked mad respect. Clockwork is so interesting
I think Dan Phantom would be more an interesting villain on the story mode of Nickelodeon All-star Brawl 2 than Vlad Plasmius
He's also the only ghost in the series to have NOTHING comedic about him happen or because of him. Everything when he is involved is dead serious all the time, there is nothing funny about him or what he does, he is a pure monster.
I do want to take a moment to point out that Danny is better than Vlad even at being evil XD

Dark Danny man, I remember days before the premiere they were building up "Who is the ultimate enemy?" and they never show who only a silhouette and his eyes. Then the title card seeing Danny all up beat up, costume torn with him looming over Danny. Not thats how you hype a big villain.
To be fair, Mr. Lancer overheard Danny and his friends talking about the exam answers, knows Danny is a C average Student and finished a Multi Hour Exam within the first hour. Enough grounds to place a Cheat Charge on him.
I always felt like if Danny had actually applied himself more as a student, he'd absolutely be a straight A student. I know his ghost hunting cuts into his study time, but if the adults in his life had proven to be more trustworthy, maybe he'd have felt more okay with sharing his secret with SOMEONE and thus having that extra help. I mean...he wanted to be an astronaut. That's a pretty auspicious goal to have and isn't one to be taken lightly.
Turns out, Danny got to go to space ANYWAYS thanks to his ghost powers, but if things had gone differently? Who knows. But that's why some of my favorite fics are where Lancer figures it out, and either helps Danny where he can, or outright tells Danny he knows and then helps. He needed at least one adult on his side during this mess...And it would make sense it would be his teacher. Sometimes they know you better than you know yourself.
It still would’ve made more sense to actually check the test results before calling his parents.

The ghostly whail is Danny's most powerful move, Evil Danny couldn't use it for 10 years and normal Danny can use it, but consumes too much energy.
Dan's origins pretty much prove that Vlad could've been Danny's greatest ally if he moved past his grudges and came to terms with his trauma.

It’s a great episode than humanizes Vlad as well. He actually takes Danny in, tries to help him (horribly, but in a way that makes sense for the character), and actually realizes how much he loves and misses Jack.
@@ma.2089 To be fair, almost every appearence of Vlad (as Masters) has him try to sway Danny to be his protege/surrogate son, with his debut and "Maternal Instincts" being prime examples. I always felt bad for when he cried after Danny asled him for a hug and acknowledged him as family. Honestly if he wasn't so fixated on Maddie, he'd have his own family by now.
Honestly think deep down Vlad wants Danny as his son seeing how they were both got their ghost powers by Jack's inventions
Honestly if Vlad was able to let go of his grudges against Jack and manage to move on from Maddie and find new love, he’d probably end up with a family of his own.

I remember them hyping up The Ultimate Enemy to be a major Danny Phantom event back in the day. And it still holds up extremely well as a major moment in Danny's journey of being a young hero.
The episode where Danny splits himself with the ghost catcher is so important to contextualizing dark Danny. Cuz ppl claim dark Danny is only evil due to Vlad, but we can see that Dark Danny literally made the choice to absorb Vlad for more power.
He became worse than what Danny could’ve been, likely being willing to murder. But he def already was power hungry and not really great.

The first time he split when the dream catcher was made, his ghost self merged back with him immediately, the second time they split they were left apart long enough that they needed the device to merge back into one, most likely developing personalities based on how danny viewed his two sides.
But in Dan's origins, he was split while under a lot of emotional distress and trauma, it could be that prior to absorbing Plasmius, his ghost half wasn't necessarily evil but traumatized by being powerless to save his family, so when he saw a chance to grab more power from plasmius, he took it without even realizing what it would do.
Dark Danny is made from Danny's grief, guilt, trauma and probably self loathing for being weak, and Vlad's own insecurities, ego, and other negative parts. He's the worst of both of them.

So basically when Danny was depressed about losing his friends and his family, he blamed his ghosts powers. His ghost half can’t exist without him and basically was only created through the accident of the ghost portal explosion. It most likely doesn’t have conscience, just follows Danny's will. When Danny rejected it, it needed to be whole because it was half a ghost. So it wanted vlads ghost half. It fused with his and it basically was in charge at the wheel. He was in control of Vlad's ghost half. He’s just Danny’s ghost half trying to get an new body. And because he’s a ghost that was created from the ghost portal instead of just dying, he doesn’t act the same as others. Can’t really be reasoned with. Dark Danny is either just as the ghost king or stronger than the ghost king. Remember that fright knight doesn’t just follow just anyone. He only follows the ghost king. It’s possible that future danny became stronger then him. Like he did 6 clones instead 4. Ghostly wail. The green mist phasing. And he actually opened a portal to the ghost zone with a wave of his hand. Danny probably only won because future danny was holding back and danny used ghostly wail.
The post-series graphic novel kinda explains Phantom's existence a bit more (spoiler if you haven't read it, it's a continuation of the series)-

Basically Danny's ghost half has the ability to merge or absorb other ghosts to basically take their powers or unique abilities which he does with Clockwork, so true, he is technically mostly Danny's half though there are remnants of Vlad's part too. It's basically explained that ghosts are a culmination of a person's emotions and drives, the further away they are from their prior selves, the less humanity they have. It's kinda cool because that means Danny's ghost has little to no humanity tied (I say little only because he *does* appear a bit regretful when facing Jazz and does minimal harm until it's actually time for her to die) to it if his human half ceases to exist. But Vlad's emotions (i.e. rejection and loneliness) are culminated within his ghost half, so outside the powers, Phantom is a ghost of trauma and abandonment. It's interesting that he still identifies closest to Danny despite canon explicitly saying he is "half Vlad" too. So I wonder if the ghost that "hijacks" another ghost ultimately becomes the pilot of the new form it takes.

The main implication is that we never truly find out HOW things played out because the only version we get to show the process of events, is Clockwork's version, which is an absolute paradox of events, which don't really make sense without being a paradox. That's the main twist of the episode, that all of this was Clockwork manipulating events and time so Dark Phantom could be captured.
For all we know, Danny flat out used his powers to snatch the test from Lancer, and the nasty burger just exploded when everybody was there as Lancer called them out for it because god knows how the sauce would still cause the nuclear reaction without Lunch Box getting involved.
And in general, this is considered to be the peak of the series. Don't get me wrong, i personally still think you guys will be able to enjoy the rest of the show, but i'm glad we got to THIS moment.

I've watched Danny Phantom in russian dub, and when Skulltech is hanging by the flagpoll, they just say "Oh wow! That flagpoll is still there!--" with amusement
Dark danny actually doesn't come back in the show if i can remember. But he does come back in a comic that came out years later
I heard he was supposed to but, since the show finished prematurely, like all Nickelodeon shows (I am still very salty about a few other shows finishing before they were finished), they never got a chance to bring Dark Danny back,

There's a sad irony that the one time Vlad truly is sincere in helping Danny, everything goes so terribly wrong. Vlad finally got what he wanted when a broken Danny arrives at his doorstep, but even he never wanted it to be like this.

So it's a bit confusing because Danny's ghost half was heroic when we first met him. But Danny kind of projected his pain and torment onto his ghost half and he started rejecting it in that timeline. That's why his ghost half went dark when he was extracted and fused with Vlad's ghost half. And to make sure his humanity was gone he off'd human Danny. He was left as a rage monster that only wanted to destroy.
I strongly reccomend you read "A Glitch in Time" if you wanna see more Dark Danny. It's a comic series (the 2nd book is in production rn), a canon continuation of the tv show, and Dark Danny is much more fleshed out and plays a major role in the overall series
The novel’s not bad, although I’m not satisfied on how it ended. Not to mention Danielle was left out and she hasn’t become part of Danny’s family and team yet. And the novel and its upcoming sequel currently remain debatable if they’re officially canon to the show’s continuity due to Hartman not involved with it, and a few flaws on its attempt to callback to the Season 3 finale of the series.

@@jthecryptid Yeah, well I’m not rather satisfied on how the novel had Danny’s parents forget learning of his double persona again in the near end of the novel. I mean they were wearing time medallions in a few parts of the final battle moment of the novel, yet they weren’t with Danny, Sam, Jazz, and Tucker when Clockwork took them back in time to give Danny his two choices to fix the damage Dark Danny did to the timeline.
So remember when you were asking for a future series with an adult Danny Phantom who had better grasp of his powers? Well, the monkey's finger curled up on that one.
Broken by the loss of friends and family, Dan Phantom went to Vlad, discarded his emotions and went full ghost, FOR EVIL, and got Vlad's smooth ass voice in the inevitable betrayal.
But there is a ghost on young Danny's side, the late David Carradine's (Bill from Kill Bill) Clockwork, and his cool quirk of constantly changing age, instead opts to give Danny a chance to prevent the future rather than going the Terminator way of things. It works out in the end, and Danny gets a new ability and doesn't have to hide his obvious secret from his sister.

I was waiting to let out this curiosity. Evil Danny was meant to appear again, but before that was possible the series got cancelled and finalized. But there's a graphic novel where Dark Danny does come back after all the events in the series and it is crazy.

I’ve ben re-watching the series and literally finished The Ultimate Enemy today so I start season 3 tomorrow. Maybe I’ll find another episode I like.

Edit: By the way, quick story time: I cheated on a test once in fifth grade, it was a math test and I was always terrible at math. The kid behind me ratted me out and when I got in trouble, I had a complete panic attack and a mental breakdown when they said they'd tell my Mom. The school was so concerned they sent me to speak to the counselor and a social worker spoke to my mom about my home situation.
Everything turned out fine, I retook the test and was only grounded for a week. I only reacted that way because I was super anxious as a kid.

I've been waiting for this reaction ever since you guys started this series, The Ultimate Enemy is easily considered the best episode of the show and for good reason. It never gets old seeing a first time reaction to Dark Danny/Dan Phantom.

2. For reference, Poindexter gave the explanation for what Danny is. He is the “Halfa,” a half-human/half-ghost being who has every ghost’s powers. However, Danny gained his “ghostly wail” 10 years too early. In his current state, it’s basically a glass cannon-type of move: while it IS devastatingly powerful, it drains him and leaves him exhausted as a result.

Ultimate enemy could have been a great episode but the thing that ruins it. HE CHEATS ON A CAREER APTITUDE TEST! There is no reason to cheat on those. They dont mean anything. It could have been psats, sats,regeants , some test the show made up but something THAT dumb just ruins the whole thing. And unfortunstely identity crisis is kinda dumb. But the fenton menace episode was a lot of fun.
Big plot hole that Danny can't just grab the medallion himself he literally grabbed a vork from inside of him in like season 1.
Okay, can I rant about something real quick? Cool.
TUE was not Danny's fault (or Dark Dan disguised as Danny during the ep) for cheating, or even Lancer's for being harsh and calling his parents to meet. They were just unfortunate vitims in a horrific domino chain of events. I blame the Nasty Burger for harboring what is essentially a BOMB to begin with. Even the employees know about how dangerous that sauce is, as foreshadowed within the FIRST 5 MINUTES of the episode! What happens if some poor customer decides they want to microwave their leftovers at home? How have they not been sued into the ground, yet!? They HAVE to be violating more than just the FDA guidelines, and I don't know how they're getting away with it!!
Sorry, that's been on my mind for a long time, and I don't have very many people to spill it to, lol.
Both Danny and Vlad's ghost are half ghost the moment they merge they fuse and become a full 100% ghost.
This is the kind of show that could have an open world game. Where you can fly all over the city and fly through buildings.

Dark Danny is genuinely such an interesting concept, I wish they would have explored it more! Also, if you weren't already aware, there is a Danny Phantom comic called "Danny Phantom: a Glitch in Time" I HIGHLY RECOMMEND READING IT. BUT (and I can't emphasize this enough) only AFTER watching all of the show. As it contains spoilers for the finalize!

Yessss, the Ultimate Enemy!!! Been waiting for these episodes! I freaking loved how much lore this spawned and seeing how evil Danny can become. We never think of it, but he is extremely powerful. He could be the worst thing in the world if he became evil. And looking at future Amity Park, surrounded by their ghost shield, all of outside the shield looks destroyed. So it hints that the world was destroyed except for his old home.
Dark Danny has so many interesting details, and shows what one little change could domino affect and ruin a lot. Also leaving it up to the viewer to decide human Danny's fate was crazy, cause my mind went really dark. Yeah he died, but how he died can be anything. The only thing we know is the first death Dark Danny did was his own human side. Truly creepy.
Edit: Oh and the introduction of the Ghostly Wail, that deep growl as it reved up, sent a chill down my spine at first.

Greatest Enemy is the most popular Danny episode(s) ever, I believe, it's such a great two parter!
(unfortunately Dark Danny, or "Dan" Phantom as some fans like to call him, doesn't make a comeback until the Danny Phantom comic continuation "A Glitch In Time" that was released about a year ago or so, so he's not going to be back within the show, I do highly recommend the comic if you guys end up wanting more Danny Phantom after finishing the series tho, it's really great!)

Btw I still don't get why and how Dark Danny still existed for so long after Danny was aware of what would lead him to become evil.. like even if Danny had to watch his friends and family (and Lancer) die, he still would know not to either go to Vlad or at least not let him "try to help" so Dark Danny should have been erased actually even before he strapped them to the Nasty Burger

The last point I think it's because Clockworks lair is outside of time itself, which makes sense since it's where Clockwork oversees all the timelines

If the series were to ever get an earned revival I’m hoping the first new season shows how Danny tries to adapt to his new lifestyle after the Season 3 finale. Now don’t get me wrong, I know there’s the novel “A Glitch in Time” but tbh I’m kinda disappointed on how it ended. Not to mention Danielle aka Dani Phantom was left out, and she hasn’t even become part of Danny’s family and team yet as Hartman had hoped to have done ages ago had the show been able to continue after Season 3. Also, it remains debatable if the novel and its upcoming sequel are even officially canon to the show’s continuity due a few flaws on its attempts to connect with the Season 3 finale of the show. And would like say may the first two new seasons would set up for a movie version of “A Glitch in Time” but it ends differently and Danny finds a way to permanently end the threat of his corrupted counterpart for good.
Future Box Ghost's beware was so menacing! The tone shift with him got me as a kid, and still gets me now.

The Dark Dany stuff is continued in the comics and it's probably the best of the whole run. But it happens after the end of the series so, you have to finish it all before reading about what happens between the two of them and how basically 90% of the storylines are wrapped up or expanded upon.

Vlad although he still had some power when danny put the specter deflector on him eventually wasn't able to stay in his ghost form. Future Danny literally powered through an explosion and ripped the deflector off him, he is 100% beyond Vlad's power tbh
Dark Danny does come back in the graphic novel that came out a year or so ago. It takes place after the series finale, so it’s probably best that you finish the show before jumping into it

They really should have made it a season finale episode at the very least-- it was a SUPER hyped up tv movie event, they made a whole videogame for it. Alas, it apparently didn't appease the Nick execs in viewership numbers (tbf even with the hype, it was poorly advertised, lacking merch, the game didn't even come out until way later, etc) and the costs drained DP's funds to early cancellation. A big shame because the writers were very much pushing for the series to be more serialized and darker due to the success of other serialized kid's show (i.e. Avatar). Some days I wonder what a world would look like if DP reached further into its potential if it wasn't carelessly cancelled so quickly.

I'm not sure if I still have it but I used to own and play the Danny Phantom game for Gameboy. Title is Danny Phantom: The Ultimate Enemy. Loved the game, fun to play.
For the small chance. The knife to the plate... it fucking hurts!! It is pain, not of the body, but the soul, the spirit. Going against Gong fu, mastery, and the way. The disrespect for the spirits, the flow! The nonchalance of heaven and earth!
I hate to break it to you, but this is where the series peaks in my opinion
Dark Danny! Woo, you got to meet him, finally!
You know, the TRUE irony of Dark Danny is that he was actually a predestination paradox, created by the Observants when they drafted Clockwork into killing Danny on their behalf. Because it was only through Clockwork's interference that ANY of the groundwork was laid for Dark Danny's creation...Danny getting his hands on the test answers...the overheating of the Nasty Sauce...Dark Danny getting hold of a Time Medallion so he could return to the present and ensure that all of Danny's loved ones died in the ensuing explosion. Clockwork only went along with this nonsense to teach the Observants a lesson...that their arrogance was CREATING the very future they sought to prevent by urging Clockwork to interfere in the first place. A future that WAS prevented only when Clockwork interfered a second time to undo the chain of events which never would have actually HAPPENED, had his previous interference not set them in motion.
Bottom line: Would any of this have even taken place if the Observants hadn't gone and whined about it? In the end, the only one who actually came to benefit from the experience was Danny. Because now Dark Danny exists in the back of his mind as a constant reminder of how far he could actually fall and as a promise of what he'll never allow himself to be.

There is actually a relativly recent comic that Happenes after the end of the show where Dan Phantom comes back. It could have been better than what we got, but is still enjoyable. But like I said, it happens after the show finale so don't look it up yet!
- Dark Danny is voiced by Eric Roberts who also voiced Mongul (Justice League), but is more known for his live action appearances. Also he seems to also maybe inspired by Marvel’s villain Onslaught who is Professor X's dark side combined with Magneto's consciousness
- Clockwork is voiced by David Carradine an American actor, director, & producer with his most well known role as Bill (Kill Bill franchise)
- Like many other superheroes Super-Danny speaks in alliteration
- In “Identity Crisis” notice that there are places or things named after writers of the show like: Hart Chips = Butch Hartman, Sib & Marty's House-o-Tools = Sib Ventress & Marty Isenberg, & Marmel Multiplex = Steve Marmel
- Notice that when Technus throws a computer at Danny it has a logo of a pear which is parodying Apple
- The episode “The Fenton Menace” is a play on “Star Wars: Episode I: The Phantom Menace” which Butch Hartman is a huge fan of the Star Wars franchise
- This episode’s plot of Danny being to only person to see Youngblood is similar to The Sixth Sense (because a young boy sees dead people) & also like the Twilight Zone episode "Terror at 20,000 Feet" with this being where the main character see a dangerous creature which no one else can while on a moving vehicle
- When Valerie blasts Dark Danny into the street he sticks his hand through the dust then clears it this is a homage to One Piece when Luffy fights Blueno
- Clockwork's ending speech is from Neil Gaiman's Sandman character Delirium

Supposedly, Dark Danny was supposed to reappear as the final villain of the whole series, which would have been awesome, but sadly they never got there. I, personally think it would have been amazing to see Danny have to go up his future self with the gloves off. Dark Danny is supposed to as strong, or possibly, even stronger, than Ghost King himself. Imagine those two going at it so decide who gets to be the final boss.
