    This pen looks gorgeous and holds quite some ink! I especially love the oblique stub over the fine nibs because it gives some contrasting strokes while you're writing. Anything fountain pen related fascinates both me and you!

    Your review is a strong advertisement to get that pen! I already have the Moonman C2 and love it.

    Excellent video. The two fine nibs I found quite scratchy but the stub is superb and that’s the one I’ll keep in the pen. The acrylic is lovely, and the way the ink doesn’t stick to the ink chamber is clever.

    Have the pen and I agree with your conclusions. The included nibs may seem like a gimmick but they are actually quite good. I could wish for a longer section but overall the pens quality and workmanship are outstanding. And it writes! For those pen people out there looking at these acrylic pens from China, this is a pretty decent value. As an eyedropper, crystal clear acrylic really makes it look magical. Great review and really enjoyed it.

    I wish I watched this, before I gave a tug on the nib to change it. Some of my previous pens were push fit and I just assumed without paying attention to detail 🙈 it now comes with different nibs now unfortunately for me.

    This pen reminds me of the Montegrappa Beauty Book Lady with its shape and rhinestone.

    I enjoyed watching your review, but I really would have loved if you had included how many mils of ink the barrel of the pen held.

    I’ve been quite lucky with my Moonman M2’s which have all come with perfectly tuned ‘EF’ nibs which write like the Japanese F steel nib you get on a Pilot Prera: it’s pretty much the only Chinese nib I like; have two Moonman C2’s with no.6 ‘F’ nibs which write more like mediums - too broad for me, anyhow; like that ink, does it sheen on tomoe river paper?

    • @WhatIInk
      @WhatIInk  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks. No real sheen and only a bit of shading. It's a good, solid blue-black that's right down-the-middle of the blue/black spectrum.

    Looks like not every S5 comes with the same extra nibs--the one Doug Rathbun reviewed recently had two different stubs. It's a great acrylic, I'm very fond of my Delike New Moon in that same material. But I think it's how it posts that's going to make it a must-buy for me.

      It really was intended as a fish tail. The Chinese name for this particular model is 鱼生 which means “the life of a fish”.

    Thanks Alan. I'd rather have a good #5 nib than a poor #6. Since the pen is not very big it doesn't look weird to me. I think a silver nib is a better look for the pen. How about a moon for a roll stop "gem" instead of that cheesy thing, Moonman?

    Wondering how you tuned your past not-so-good Moonman nibs? I recently got a very nice looking Moonman M600S but the nib seems to be a dud... very dry and after some tine-spreading, the horizontal strokes are still quite scratchy and produce a very faint line of ink (if any). The pen feels very nice so really want to fix the stock nib to make it usable!

    • @WhatIInk
      @WhatIInk  3 роки тому

      If the tines are spread, you have to manipulate them to tighten them. If the nib is scratchy, you need to examine the tip with a loupe (you CANNOT do it with the naked eye) and make sure the tines are perfectly aligned. If it's still scratchy after the tines are confirmed to be aligned, you will need to smooth it using a micromesh emery board. See my Esterbrook restoration video (towards the end) or my Moonman M8 video for instructions on how to do this.
      Good luck!

      What I Ink I meant that I spread the tines to improve the ink flow of the stock nib I received (which was extremely dry), which was successful, as it made downward strokes more wet and now bearable, however it didn’t solve the still-dry horizontal strokes :( Thanks for the insights though! I am going to check alignment and determine what further work will need to be done 👍

    Good review of an interesting pen. I have been thinking of purchasing a Moonman but I've seen/heard/read stories of other Asian pens' acrylic cracking so was wondering what your take on the quality of materials they use is?

    • @WhatIInk

      I think the quality is excellent, especially considering the low price.

      my Moonman pens (2 M2's, a Wancai, a C2 Fude, and a T1) have all held up without any problems, and the nibs are outstanding, the best I own (vs Pilot Metropolitan, TWSBI Eco, 2x Pentel Tradio, and a hoarde of Jinhao pens)

    So the nib isn't fully removable? Like, if I wanted to do a Goulet #5 swap or something like that. 🤔

    • @WhatIInk

      You should be able to remove one of their nibs from the holder and replace it that way. Haven't tried it myself.

    Would you say you prefer a #6 on the S5 just out of aesthetics? Because to me, I don't know if a #6 would add too much to the total length of the pen, but it would look nice.
    While I do kinda enjoy the looks of the pen I personally will skip on it mainly for aesthetic purposes, I already have enough demonstrators, I don't really dislike gold trim but I do prefer silver trim, the acrylic on the section is a little "meh", the gold ring plus the little crystal looks a little gimmicky, and that unnecessary ring that's machined in the cap looks a bit odd.
    I also highly recommend flushing any new pen/nib unit with soapy water, in order to jumpstart the feed but also to get rid of any manufacturing gunk, great review nonetheless so please keep them coming.

    • @WhatIInk
      @WhatIInk  3 роки тому

      It depends on the maker. For Jinhao for example, their #6 nibs are just better writers than their #5 nibs, PLUS there is the aesthetics. For any above-average-sized pen, a #6 just seems more appropriate.
      I usually do flush before fill, the one exception is when I do a "straight from the box" video like this one, where I want to show the full-new-pen experience.
      Thanks for watching!

      @@WhatIInk I've personally never seen a huge difference with Jinhao's #6 and #5 nibs but then again I've only ever used 2 of each so I don't think I can make that claim. I'd agree, it really comes down to the pens maker and aesthetic on whether a #6 nib is necessary. I still say it's a good idea to flush any new nib and feed since the manufacturing particles and even oils may affect the performance an even give you an unfair repersentation of the pens performance straight out the box.

      @@WhatIInk I've used many Jinhao 5 & 6 nibs. I prefer the 5 as a better EDW. Consistent fine line, great for notes on lower quality paper. I prefer the Moonman 6 to Jinhao 6. More tipping material, smoother. I quess I'm lucky cause all mine Moonman 6 nibs write well. Nibs like pens are a very personal experience, one man's nib is not everyman's nib. Then there's paper & ink affectig nib performance.
