Hearing the description of workhouses makes me so sad, my family were in London for 7 generations until my grandparents moved. I know and have documentation that some of my great great great grandparents were in a workhouse for a time, it makes me so sad for them.
Absolutely love you guys. 😍 My 8 month old daughter also loves your intro. She always stops what she's doing and listens to your theme with a smile 🖤 thank you for making our days.
Hi. Enjoyed this listen. Workhouses were such a terrible institution the fear of them is detectable to this day in the relatives of those that experienced them. I am unaware of any family that were in one, but my Mum, who is into her history, when talking of them, you can tell by her voice. She was born later, but you can detect the fear in her voice, presumably from the stories of her grandparents and other older family members for whom it was a real looming threat.
It's important to understand that British society believed that poor people were considered worthless because their poverty was their own fault for having an immoral lifestyle. The British Empire was the greatest, richest power on Earth in the 1880's, but there were no institutions in place to help the poor get employment, housing, or food or protect and support impoverished children. It's disgraceful.
Whitechapel and most areas of the east end have now been totally gentrified, did they tell ypu that any area with the word "green" after it means there's a mass grave where victims of the plague were buried. So Stepney Green, Bethnal green etc
Failure to state Charles "Cross" was really Charles Lechmere who was at the scene at least fifteen minutes before Paul came upon him is a huge swing and a miss
@Ash & Elena: I've been listening to your podcast for a couple of years now. I recently had to migrate it over to YT Music from Google Podcasts. Starting today, none of the episodes will load and no one has been helpful in resolving this issue. I'm using the RSS feed as this podcast doesn't go back as far as I am currently in your episodes (still back in 2021, haha). Any advice? Note: My other saved podcasts are currently working, so I had to resort to those today, haha.
If you didnt have enough for a bed there was rows of ropes tied to posts and you could pay to sleep hanging on that rope. The reason most slum areas in the UK in the past were in the east end is because the wind goes from west to east makes sure the smell of the factories and slums dont reach the noses of the well to do who lived in the West End. Bit of useless info. The reason there was so many drunks is because the water was so unsanitary that people were encouraged to drink alcohol instead because it kills the bugs in the water and so gin became a "mothers ruin"

Isn’t Aaron Kosminsky Jack the Ripper?
Where's the other channel? 😫 I'm so confused.
Where can I find the book titles mentioned in this episode?
That's what I like to know
