- Exploring an Abandoned Church - Massive Untouched Sanctuary
Built in 1895, this once thriving church has been vacant for over 30 years now. It sits in an area known to many as a high crime location. It is said that this church was one of the first Bible vacation schools in the country and drew a very large crowd for its Sunday services. In the late 1980s, the Presbytery found the building to be unsound and not safe for worship. The last worship happened in this building not long after. in 2013, demolition was planned for the church. A preservation group for the area was able to stop the demolition and had the deed of the building passed on to them. They have been actively working on raising money to save the church. They allowed a group of us to tour the building. As you will see in the video, there is a lot of damage from it being vacant over the years. Hopefully it can be saved in the years to come..

Whenever I see something like this it makes me think of all the decades of parishioners who sacrificed their blood, sweat and tears to have this beautiful house of worship as a soul saving station in their community... just abandoned and deteriorating 😢
I believe this was the Woodward Avenue Presbyterian Church in Detroit, MI. It was built about 1908, maybe 1910 and had a vigorous congregation until the late 1950s or mid 60s. Sadly, the church became the victim of demographics with people moving out. A couple of churches came in and tried to make a go of it, but they soon closed, too.
That church is beautiful. It’s sad to see it lonely and abandoned. I can only imagine how full it was back in the day. Back when more people loved God. Back when people lived in communities and helped each other. 🕯⛪️🕊
Even in it's current state it's still beautiful, and has impressive architecture. It definitely deserves to be saved. Thanks for the tour!
Back with another video. Beautiful vacant church. One thing that is different about this video is I have some light music playing in the background. I had to do this to help drown out some of the side conversations by the group I was with. I know its not my thing to play music but I tried to keep it very mellow and also dropped the audio so its not too overwhelming over the audio in the video. Enjoy..
Please dont apologise for how, or what you add to your videos.
Its a fitting aesthetic, the music.I say those who have complained in the past should make something themselves before complaining about added music to explore videos.
really great work Steve.
Quite honestly, I rather enjoyed it. It accomplished exactly what you set out to accomplish. Quite honestly, I prefer it, it helps to cover up much of the low level noise (breathing, shuffling, etc), and also helps to hold the video together, and set a mood for it.
It was very nice Steve.
We live several miles from this once magnificent church. Very sad to report that this happened several days ago. www.firehouse.com/operations-training/video/21140077/fastmoving-5alarm-fire-guts-abandoned-historic-pa-church
Such a lovely church it's a sad to see it just sit
I agree with you.
Yeah.....it will probably just sit for the next 20 or more yrs, (been what? 30 already?) deteriorating badly until they finally tear it down. Why not just tear it down now and build something useful
Churches are from hell.
Thank you for sharing this with us! Beautiful place despite the decay. I really like the workmanship on the wood in there...
I love the stained glass windows, and am very glad they are still intact and no creeps have entered there and smashed them...Amen!!!!!!
Amen!!!
Amen 🙏
It is a shame that they can’t be removed and used by some other church before they do get vandalized. I have known that to happen in other areas.
Hi Steve
so glad your back! Thats a beautiful Church. So sad that whoever left it to rot! Thumbs up! Trish
BEAUTIFUL old building, I Love that Castle Architecture. The Ceiling in the sanctuary is amazing. I sure hope they can restore it, such a beautiful building. Thank You, Steve.
So happy you’re back. I absolutely love your videos!
Nice to watch another video from you!So sad to see this church that had served so many lives, and now gone!
Still beautiful. Surprisingly good condition for being abandoned 30 years.
I agree Miss Gaile
Once Churches built like this are gone they will be gone for ever. To duplicate a work like this in today's world would be cost prohibitive. Nice Work Steve!
A beautiful sanctuary like this does not need to rot away!
Yay! So glad you finally got a new video up!
Really glad to see you back.
Thank you so much for exploring!!!
Beautifully done! ❤️👍🏼
Amazing structure and great video. The music added a lot. I loved it.
The workmanship of this! Amazing. Thank you. I could still feel all the love in there. Baptisms..weddings. etc. Life death
What a great place for worship. How are you doing Rebecca I hope you’re safe from the virus?
Great vid Steve, good to have you back bro, would be a shame to loose all that beautiful wood to demolition.
I just imagine all the young.. and older couple who grew up, married and raised families in this and similar churches. The had their funeral Masses as well. Amazing
Absolutely beautiful building! Hopefully it can be saved.
That place is beautiful love those old stone Gothic style churches and my main man was in the stained glass window :)
They are so awesome!
Stained glass is usually saved before demolition
Perfect I'll check it out tomorrow..chills are running up and down my
It always amazes me the items that are left behind in the building.
Great video, I haven't seen your videos in a while. Gorgeous church, too bad to see it rott, at least there hasn't been anyone to trash the place.
Amazing, this church still stands. 💜
This is the first thing I would donate to if I hit the lottey! This beautiful historical church MUST be restored. Where to begin? Did anyone notice the 2 cherubic faces in the opening shot in the concrete vertical spikes on either side of the red door? Awesome. The first rooom with a dome looked like there was glass in it that has been covered up, and the wood all thru is georgeous. That sanctuary is divine, have never seen one like that. The JC stained glass is intact from 1894, wow! Gothic wooden doors, and the pipe organ? where is it ; ) maybe next time... oh and does anyone else notice that when churches are abandoned the neighborhood goes to pot? hmmm.
Beautiful place. Great choice of music. Brilliant filming. Thank you
Beautiful Great place for worship. Hello jacky how are you doing with your family?
@@andychris7647 good thanks. Hope you and your family are well
@@jackyhawkins1895 You’re welcome my family is safe too. Would you mind to hit me up at email so we can get to know much better and share up some common interest together Jacky? Andychris792@gmail.com
Oh how beautiful !!
Thanks Steve for sharing with me about Abandoned church it was abandoned that long Steve it is a shame I hope they get the money up to save this church from being demolition because this church could be fixed to be safe once again and building can be fixed. thanks again abandoned Steve for taking your time to make another well done video good job my friend and I really enjoyed it like I always enjoyed all your videos and I can't wait to see your next video and God Bless you my friend and thanks again.
Having been a trustee for an elderly church building, you have no idea of the costs involved. If the inspectors said it was structurally unsound, it was bad. The main beams in that kind of sanctuary roof tend to pull apart eventually, causing the walls to eventually collapse.
Wow! Beautiful as is but imagine it restored and full of life again!
Hey Steve! Awesome video! I’m trying to get in here! It’s so beautiful! 🙌🏻🖤🔥
Thank you
I found the added music was a really nice touch actually Steve, It didnt intrude into the video at all. :)
The Hammer beam supported roof is stunning! 🤩
Such a beautiful building
what a wonderful place and great exploration video thanks for it guys 👍✌️
thanks for watching
Awesome!
What a beautiful church.
Amazingly Outstanding Sanctuary and Facility. Per the description I hope the current group is successful in preservation.
That's a lovely church! Sad to see it just sitting like that. 😕
I remember (wow this was almost a year ago already) may favorite or at least top 3 videos you did for me was a Church small inside and very dark man that place was so haunted. Anyways this Church is amazing! thanks!
This church is haunted????
Amazing grace. :-)
For being so unsafe that it had to close, why is it still standing 30 some odd years later?
That is the question everyone has. Was it just an excuse to close it
Such a beautiful facility, its a shame that no one is making use of it, and allowing it to fall into such a state of disrepair.
Nice too see you exploring again, that place needs too be closed up and heated b4 it gets worse the basement needs attention first , b4 that big support rots away.
Wow!
Looks like a decent sized church. Its nice to see that the stained glass windows are still intact...👍
The building is stunning! Such a shame to let it crumble.
A beautiful place that makes you wonder why they left it. Probably money shortage. The music was a good touch and much better than people talking. Sometimes when I'm editing I turn the audio down on a particular clip because I usually have some relaxing background music anyway. 👍😆
Probably, or they moved further out to the suburbs and used it as collateral on the loan to build elsewhere. Old broken down church in an old broken down neighborhood that changed overtime.
After decades of political graft & corruption, then 70s sent manufacturing & industry oversears nothing was left but poverty. Then the drug industry was in full swing by the 80s. Those who could left, this includes most parishoners. This city has such an untold American tale...
So sad. Thank you
I can see lots of possibilities for this church first on my list would b to live in it as a house.
or as a wedding venue for weddings why this beautiful church sits unused doesn't make sense to me
With some repairs and hard work to bring life back into it would be the greatest gift to this church
Plus I'm sure the community would like to see it open again.
I belonged to the committee who thought it had a chance of being restored
Awesome building. I hope it doesn't get vandalized any further...
I agree!
Just Beautiful and what a shame to it it go to this
Gothic style architecture, my favorite. This church is a magnificent edifice, it deserves to be saved. I hope that they don’t demolish it. I just don’t understand why people think it’s necessary to demolish a structure of this magnitude, when it’s rather obvious that it’s still in decent condition. I live in Pennsylvania, I was curious to where this is , just to see if I know this area. The music was a nice touch .
Thank you for the video. My father and I would visit this church on occasion and admire its structure. My favorite part was the Kilgen Brothers Pipe Organ. Sadly, it was burnt down presumably by vandals this past month. The only thing that remains are the exterior brick and stone work. Just a shell.
Wait hold up.. the organ was burnt or the church building burnt down?
Since this is burnt down where is this
@@stormspotter67 The church burned down. Only the walls remain. I was part of the group that was trying to restore it
@@stewartquark1661 gotcha. Shame it burnt
@@stormspotter67 Yeah, things happen
Looks like someone stole one of the three stained glass windows. Did I see a grand piano next to the organ console under a plastic cover? This church could be transformed into a charter school and multipurpose facility and a concert hall in the sanctuary. Some civic organizations like the Lions Club or Masons could help save this beautiful old church.
Thumbs Up, and have a good weekend.
A beautiful church. Many churches have fallen on hard times as of late.
Yes, they have.
Jesus said ,”There will be a great falling away from the faith in the end days”.
This breaks my heart
Such architecture and skilled craftsmanship is awe-inspiring. Personally, I would love to see abandoned churches turned into homeless, low income, community centers, etc.
After decades of abuse by clergy, this could serve as a form of "penance?" It's just a thought 🤔.
I'm glad that it hasn't been vandalized.
Thanks for an excellent video. The sanctuary is beautiful. On the right side is that large ornate wood screen which I believe is the facade for the church's pipe organ. Did you get a chance to look inside that area and, if so, was there any pipe work in there? I hope the group that owns it is successful in its rehab. Thanks for all your hard work.
Its a Gothic Monestary
Beautiful structure
If the building itself cannot be saved, save the stain glass windows, the pews, things that can be removed from it. There are places who could use these items, and even (disgusting thought I know) private wealthy folk who'd pay an arm and a leg for like the glass windows (we could pray having them would lead to their conversions!). Just a thought. That woodwork is gorgeous and the chapel' ceiling - oh my goodness grace! Lovely. There is a ton of wealth for the church to be earned on that woodwork alone, with its craftsmanship that is nowhere seen these days!
To lose it all because the preservation group can't raise enough is a very sad thought. But then my friend stated we should focus on God, not a building.
It must've been a sizable congregation back in its heyday... Sad that the building and contents are just left like that, open to theft and vandalism... It will probably get worse as time goes on...
It appears that this preservation group has already done alot to salvage and restore this beautiful place. There is hope for it!
Such a grand and beautiful place, it saddens me that the city/town could not restore it, turn it in to a shelter or a place for low income families, over time it would become a "win win solution", building gets saved from rot and decay, families, children, elderly...homeless!...will then have a safe place under one roof..equipped with a library, day care centre, cafeteria and kitchen, and still have a place to worship...but hey, your government and country is just SOOO rich that thousands of homes and buildings are better off to decay..sad, real sad (btw, I loved your video, great videography, it says a lot when a viewer can watch an entire video and not end feeling sea sick/nauseous..lol..👍🏻👍🏻
Yesss 😁
Most of the building is in good condition except for dust and that one room that's a total mess. Any one know what the denomination was and why it isn't in use? Hard to believe it's been abandoned thirty years.
This just makes me angry. What a waste of a beautiful building.
Were there any parts of the organ left?
Someone please save this magnificent building
Is this on or around Pittsburgh? I think I remember seeing it on the news.
Amazing video yet again! May I ask what camera this is?
I use a Nikon D850
@@AbandonedSteve Thanks!
I'm surprised at how unvandalized it is.
If I ever won lottery, buying a building like this and make it a home would be amazing deal.
Such a beautiful church, why did they abandoned it
Let’s say 3000 attended church every Sunday in
1950 let’s say u lose one person per Sunday do to old age or just falling away from church.
1950 to 2020 is 3640 Sundays. So if u lose one person per Sunday you now have 0 people attending. I don’t know if this is true, just one possibility.
It should be restored
That church is up the street from my old house on Potter st
💜
That ledge that ran along the 2nd floor had no railing. How could that be?
What state or country?
☺
I have always wanted to see in side of that church.
Gut wrenching ! Might l ask what denomination was the Parrish and where is it located! Thanks
Any history?
How does a church become abandoned like that?????
The men in the past, built some beautiful churches.
I don't understand why such a beautiful church like that would be abandoned & just sit there to rot & decay such a shame
So sad to see a beautiful building just Deteriorate.
The timber in these places must be worth some money……it’s heavy duty stuff . ……..When wood was much cheaper than today and there was lots of it……!
How can i see if it is for sale?
As far as a high crime area 2 or 3 pitbulls will deal with that.
Who made this video?
On May 28, 2020 the church was destroyed by fire
I want it!
Oh my pension use to be oiling and cleaning those pews . Not at that church but like it.
Very sad.
A lot of churches are finding new life as mosques.
Where is this?
