    The intentions of this video is not malicious, however it does show that there is still a long way to go as far as cultural understanding of Black people. The first and only being - we are not all the same. We are not all good at sports, have cheery demeanors or will smile at you when you make eye-contact. Not all of us can dance, sing or perform under any given moment. We come in all shapes and sizes. Some of us are mean, some of us are good-natured and thus not everyone will take kindly to being called black hyung or noona. You have many ignorant people who happen to be black, and many intelligent and forward thinking people who happen to be black. Some will assume things about Korea, others will not even know Korea exists. Many will be a fan of Korean culture others will fetishise it in the same narrow minded way people would do to us because of the colour of our skin.
    The real crux here - we the black people are human and like the rest of the human race we are individually complex and unique. Now by all means learn all the cultural bests - Black american culture, Caribbean, African, Afro-Latino and Australasian Aboriginal black culture. We come in all shades, languages and of different faiths.
    I know this video isn't supposed to represent all Korean thoughts, and it's a cheery open discussion that will get others talking and being open-minded about people they may have heard or seen negative things about. I just wanted to also add my two scents and say - we are just people like you, we are not one way.

      I don't agree that Koreans in Korea have any more a requirement to understand "black" people, than we have a requirement to understand Koreans. It is true that not all "black" people are the same but to them we are quite obscure. Out of site out of mind. I just don't think understanding "black'' people is entirely relevant to the Korean way of life...

      Not in the world, not even close... Mostly in America and countries strongly influenced by America. Historically though Jewish people have gotten the short end of the stick a lot. So they might actually be taking the W for the most disliked group in the world.
      But as a person that lives in America and travels a lot. Once you leave America, you don't feel much if any hate at all. Iceland for example, you're treated better than anyone else (as far as women are considered).

    Can we be appreciated not because of our perceived height, athleticism, demeanor or musicality but rather for our common humanity?

    • @Karkitts
      @Karkitts 7 років тому +17

      Not both because what OP listed is usually what everyone goes for first before humanity. People should try to learn about 'us' first rather than all those other things yknow. Looking past stereotypes or physical traits and getting to know people first. And its not really a problem to have both, but 'sports' was one of the only things we could really compete with the other races for and get our own race widely known for in a positive way. I know the Koreans in this video are somewhat relying on stereotypes or the few really good looking tall or fit blacks theyve seen but the middle guy said it himself "I thought all black people could dunk but i guess thats not the case' That. That is why. They'll unconsciously label something to all of us and be surprised when we dont do it, like sports.
      Im not like trying to fight you or anything in this though i just wanted to explain something and hopefully didnt come across as aggressive.

      Fox Lemieux. It's a natural generalization. Like Cubans are good a baseball, Asian are good at martial arts. Asian/Indians are known for being bookworms for example - it's just a trait that is noticed in one group by another. People tend to admire what they do not have, like women buying other races hair. So yes, while being tall and smiley while breakdancing may be trivial to you, it's remarkable to those who never threw a frisbee. 'Common humanity' is a given; this topic is neither about that nor sensitivity.

    This is really a very uplifting video to watch. 분위기가 너무 좋다! I think a lot of people think racism is very serious in Korea only because they don't understand that its because Korean's can be very shy in the face of people who are very different, especially as different as a black and might therefore behave in a way that accidentally give the wrong impression.

They stereotype all blacks as a whole, some being what they would think as "positive" and of course the negatives. A lot of them are very blunt when they talk to you, but you cant be blunt back. awwww. These guys are wonderful. Genuine. Also, going by this video, there seems to be a big difference in how Koreans living in Korea feel about Black people vs. how Korean-Americans feel about Black people. I don’t want to generalize, I can only speak from my own experiences, but Korean-Americans seem to have adopted racist white-american pathology towards People Of Color and LGBTQIA+ people. In my experience Korean-Americans seem very conservative.

This vidieo is really sweet, I remember when I became best friends with my first Asian friend not from the States, and she was like these guys, she had so many questions about black people, Americans how they differ ..etc, in her country Africans would visit but not many Black Americans. She had never met any other groups of black people either. We had some of the best conversatoin and Both loved learing of each others culture. We all have a awsome story to tell, it's great making frineds form different backgournds.

      Esther Kahindo There is a difference, sadly many black people in American don't know African culture.. Language nor care to learn there ancestory. Not all.. However my African friends know there native languages, have a history to which ever part of Africa they are from.. Etc. One thing I see is black Americans were stripped of any African culture. Some don't even care to learn about there African heritage. Some don't even know, that's why I think ancestry is neat because it can probably show some people what region of Africa there DNA matches.

      Ariana Moreno It's Crazy right!! .. I wouldn't say everyone. Haha I love to learn more about my families diverse cultures.
      I feel some American people feel ashamed possibly of there family history that's why they seem to not care..
      But indeed it's sad to see such apathy in many people, because they share this with there children.
      I was saddened because I had a former friend tell me that she was upset because her daughter was not identifying with the Caucasian side of her family but I reminded my friend you have to remember your daughter looks different from many of her Caucasian cousins so of course she's going to have questions. She's part Caucasian part Vietnamese and part Filipino why not introduce her to those sides of the family. Her response was because I choose not to...... ........ Ugh yes we rarely talk anymore..
      The whole reason she didn't care to tell her daughter about the Vietnamese or Filipino part of her culture is because she had a strong dislike for the Filipino people in her family, for not accepting her American Caucasian mother. As for the Vietnamese side which is her husband's side he's part Vietnamese and Caucasian. He is not close to his mother who is Vietnamese. So neither really talk about the different cultures that the family has.

    There are a lot of us white Americans that love black people too. The news just wants to show the worst of race relations. When I worked as a nurse in Richmond we were half white and half black. I used to tell the girls I was white in the middle but black on the outside like an oreo. They called me boo which I thought was so sweet and I called them boo too. No matter the color a like or dislike is not related to the color of the skin but by the color of the soul. I just wish our country would realize how well out cultures do enjoy each other’s company instead of blowing up the hate all of the time!

    What a positive video! I plan on teaching in Korea, and although I am mixed with black and white, I usually just describe myself as black. I think a lot of black people (especially Americans) are scared they'll face discrimination abroad like they do at home. Seems like that won't be the case in Korea! I can't wait to go! 😗

    • @rustyspygoat4089

      good luck because the truth is you will face more discrimination in SE Asia than USA... This is coming from an English teacher who is currently teaching in Vietnam. When hiring teachers, I am told not to hire black people because the parents of the children don't want their kids learning English from black people. They assume that black peoples English level is not on par with white peoples English.
      This is obviously a false generalization and I'm not saying you will definitely come across racism when you travel to Korea. However my advice for you is to go for you job in Korea and be excited and positive and this will quickly change negative perceptions (if there are any at all). At the end of the day stereotypes are created from ignorance and many Asians simply have no personal experiences with black people. So go and show them what a wonderful person you are

      I have a question, when does a mixed person "become black", because the black community likes to claim mixed blacks when they feel like it a reject them when they feel like it...most black Americans are mixed, so does a mixed black person automatically become black if they don't know their lineage? If this young lady had children with a "real" black person are they still mixed or are they officially black?
      Your comment on a whole was extremely unnecessary and unproductive, because she had already stated she is mixed but calls herself black, like so many black looking mixed people do. In the non-black community if you look black you are black and mostly treated as such yet only other blacks like to treat black looking mixed people as other.

    • @HandleUnclear
      @HandleUnclear 7 років тому +12

      Arianna Goss I was referring to you, and yes I know black people are put down for their natural features, many other black people don't feel the way you do that is a fact coming from a predominantly "black" country myself, a mixed person is mixed regardless of the percentages obama has those same black features blacks get put down for but he is 50/50, based on your ideology mixed blacks would be isolated especially those who look black and not mixed because they won't fit into your blackness due to pedigree and they won't fit into any other race because of pedigree AND the fact that they look black.
      Yes media uses more brown women, but you forget 2 black parents can have a white looking child so is that child black or will they be expelled from your ideological "black" community?

      anthony barlow: I agree with you brother. But I think it's because that image American culture projects onto black people. They're getting most their views through media, magazines, internet. Most never really known black people.

    This is a dope video. I feel as if there's no genuine meaness for the most part on either side, just a lack of understanding which is of course, ameliorated through interaction, which inevitable will bring people together as at the end of the day, we're all human first and foremost. We laugh, we cry, etc. You guys are doing the Lord's work, thank you.

    This was entertaining and informative. Many times we take the media's spin on race relations due to fear of asking personally or just lack of people to ask. So this was nice to see thanks.

    I found this video to be both fascinating and disturbing. There's something very off putting about hearing someone who doesn't have a lot of experience with black people construct blackness. I felt like an alien watching humans talk about aliens. What disturbs me more is the reaction to it by other black people in the comments. Which means that I might get some backlash. Okay.
    To the guys in the video: Please take care to separate the culture from the person. Yes, sports, food, and music are big parts of black culture, but that doesn't mean that everyone who is black experiences and engages with that culture in the same way. You can appreciate aspects of cultural trends without using it to stereotype people. Positive stereotyping is still stereotyping and it should be resisted. People should not be thought of as superior or inferior because of their race, even if the distinction is in that race's favor (talking to the black people in the comment...oh boy). It's still bad. It's still dangerous. It still leads to things like fetishization and, consequently, dehumanization.
    I don't want to attack these boys. I don't think that they are saying what they're saying to be malicious. Everyone stereotypes. Everyone has a similar issue to combat which is to treat everyone you meet like it is a new experience, because it is, and to not assume things about them. All of our views on race need to evolve. I don't want to attack other black people who are looking at this positively. It does feel nice to be praised instead of condemned for our race, especially because that doesn't happen very often. We do deserve to be uplifted after such a long period of oppression and hatred. We have to be careful, though, because if we accept this viewpoint that the black community is a monolith, then we open the door for others to view us as essentially something "other" and not human. Which is how you hear reports of other cultures who "love black people" but don't want them moving to their country or marrying their citizens.

    I love this videos it’s a start in getting to understand culture differences. The stereotype of cultural differences has miss educated all of us from different points of view. We are all scared and nervous of each other because of what we do not understand. But I appreciate the good things that these young men say and adore of the black community just as much as I adore and respect their community. Thank you guys for making this video.

    I just want to be reassured if my experience in Korea will be no different in my hometown in America, France, Europe, or any other country because I am accepted. The image of my people has a residue or a stain from the past that is so hard to wipe away. I plan on moving or visiting for a period of time to Korea eventually. I just want to be A-okay
