i watch a lot of both american and korean dramas, and specifically for teen dramas i think kdramas are usually very sweet and uplifting whereas american dramas tend to be darker/more mature and serious
Maybe that’s the reason why I started watching Korean series these days. I already had enough with real life stuff. What’s happening in real life. It’s mentally draining. All this negativity. I just want something light hearted, sweet tones. Maybe that’s why people play video games, to escape real life. So, maybe that’s why people watch Korean series. To escape real life.
@@alohatigers1199 THIS! I prefer kdramas more because they more brighter and happier ( Not all though ) but I felt more like myself when I watched them. Watching things about s*x, dr*gs, and other stuff kinda made me mentally drained
I think it’s a mix of both for US teen dramas. They have a wider variety like Supernatural teen dramas, Romance teen drama, and the dark-type of genre like Euphoria. I prefer US teen dramas but for Korea i love their dark, horror-type genre of films way more~
@@alohatigers1199 thats honestly a very good way of putting it!! i still prefer American dramas bc I like the darkness. I only like darker kdramas like squid games, my name, hellbound, all of us are dead, etc. all the lighthearted ones I watched were not my cup of tea but I can see why they could be an escape for some edit: also it's okay to not be okay and sky castle! lol I forgot about sky castle but they mentioned it in this video, I like that kdrama too
To live as a teenager in the American dramas it all really depends on where you live and who you hang out with. Other than that most teens just do the usual eating out with friends or shopping or staying home, or that’s in my case since I live in a small town and the kids who do drugs all hang out together.
Yup, its def different in bigger cities like LA and NYC. I'm from NYC so there were definitely a lot of similarities I saw in some of these US teen dramas
I think US dramas reflect what most teen would love to be: irresponsible grown ups. And Korean Drama reflect what parents would love their teens to be: wise and innocent.
@เอียน แมทธิว You haven't watched euphoria and it shows the show does not promote anything it shows what happens in some schools but in a very graphic way rue almost dying from liver failure isn't "promoting" anything rue going through withdrawal isn't "promoting" anything Jules being forced too go to a mental hospital and in turn craving attention from older men isn't "promoting" anything maddy being in an abusive relationship isn't "promoting" anything watch the show and don't be a freak and focus on the nudity actually watch it
@@mels607 he was talking about euphoria in multiple comments he's crapping on the show for no reason 💀 he is a freak if he only watch the show too see adults depicting doing the do
A lot of these shows that depict teenagers are made by adults who came of age when teenagers had somewhat freer lives (which I partly attribute to how much more homework they have nowadays, but that's just my perception; I also think they're better-appraised of the risks associated with sex). Statistically speaking, even pre-pandemic, teens are less sexually active than they were in the 90s and early 00s, and tend to start having sex older than they did in the 90s, though they probably still are more likely to explore their sexuality in high school than Korean teenagers, and of course pockets that resemble the old days still exist in a lot of places. The source for this is the CDC, who put out a biannual Youth Risk Behavior Survey. Sexual activity in teenagers has declined to about 38% as of 2019 (I suspect it's even less in 2022), versus well over half being sexually active in 1991.
Yo this the best description of it imo. Doesn’t help most directors and producers nowadays are old men who just want a reason to live out their odd sexual fantasies with minors or people depicted as minors. Just look at Dan Schneider. And that was children’s shows. Plus it ain’t like teens want to see their real lives in shows anyways. We need the escapism our parents got us by the collar. We don’t get out like they used to.
yeah. and sometimes youth today start having sex later for good reasons (responsibility, not feeling ready, not wanting to get pregnant) while other times it's due to increased levels of social isolation and mental illness than in previous generations (i think we can blame most of it on the internet and the increasing crushing weight of capitalism). i am in the latter category, unfortunately. i'm a 22 year old virgin due to depression and crippling social anxiety. i used to dwell on it a lot and be really sad about it but now i'm less so bc i realised so many people nowadays suffer from this problem. i'm now going to therapy which helped me raise my self esteem, curb anxiety a little and i am now finally able to make friends! and i'm about to start anti-anxiety meds which will hopefully help even further 😁 point is, parents are so worried about the new generation being "promiscuous", meanwhile their generation was far more promiscuous despite all the media censorship. and the current social climate often creates the opposite of "promiscuous" people - it creates socially awkward hermits.
@Michael Tessier agree with this bc of social media we aren’t shedded from shtt. A lotttt more diversity . As a gay black woman it’s crazy how much I see somewhat ppl like me in shows.
That's because sex education is actually working! Talking about sex is not a bad thing at all :) it actually does the opposite. When people talk about sex, they also talks about the risk that comes with it. I like that most American shows are very open when it comes to talking about sex.
To all the people saying that k-dramas are unrealistic, you need to understand that not everyone's reality is the same. The country you're living in, it's culture and the surrounding environment makes all the difference. As someone who grew up in Asia, k-dramas are more relatable but that's only because my personal school experience was very similar to those in k-dramas (with the cultural differences of course; i.e. no aegyo). When I was younger, I thought American teen dramas were very exaggerated until I was told (and saw first-hand) that stuff like that does happen in the U.S. That kids are able to access drugs quite easily and that impacts the "typical" school life. Just because American teen dramas depict something so different from what I experienced as a teen doesn't mean it's unrealistic, it just means that it's a completely different life in a completely different country...
Soo true. I've read so many comments saying that American teen dramas are like that because it's realistic while kdramas are cutesy, light, and non-realistic. Like bruh. They're both realistic in their own way, and their reality is not everyone's reality.
Fax. I guess part of the reason why is the same reason why people play videos games: to escape real life. Nowadays what’s happening in real life, politics, social and cultures issue... stuff like that is mentally draining. Such negativity. And people want to clear their minds.
I feel like American movies are pretty popular in Korea but not American shows. For the most part, koreans consume kdramas, kShows and etc ., like Idk a lot of Koreans who have watched popular American trending shows such as euphoria
@@hoxyfoxy To be precise, Koreans are very interested in idol groups when they are in their teens, but when they are in their 20s, they don't listen to kpop idols well except for some good songs. It's a little different from nerd. Anyway, when they become adults, they usually listen to a lot of songs with meaningful lyrics. (Especially, band music, love songs, etc.. You can tell by looking at Korea's most famous music chart, Melon Chart.)
Chacha seems well versed in western teen dramas, given that she has even heard of the UK version of "Skins" (which is way better but also way raunchier than the later US version), which I am kinda surprised about. I would like to recommend the UK series "Misfits" to her, which has a similar vibe.
Y'all have to remember that your reality is not everyone's reality. You might think that Korean teen series or Kdramas in general are unrealistic because it doesn't revolve around sex, crime, drugs, etc. but you have to remember that we are all different. Korean teen series and american teen dramas are both unrealistic and realistic in their own way.
i love your comment and totally agree with you :) not sure why but even as someone from Europe, I've always related more to east asian shows like anime and kdrama especially compared to American series or even European ones
Now that I think about it, I wish American teen shows/movies would be more diverse with how we are depicted. Like not all of us only think about sex or sports or drugs. Give us something different instead of recycling the same stereotypes over and over. You know what…I’m gonna write my own show!!
@@MrsNiaboo2000 Aish! I haven’t been able to relate to Disney since I was young and a pre-teen (born in 2000). Not a channel I watch anymore. It’s also too…Disney-like…which doesn’t depict the average teen/tween.
There are a lot of Teen shows that are like that tho…. Euphoria is a good example, but there are others. You have characters that are interested in sex like Cassie and Maddy but you also have the characters that could not care less about it and have other interests (some bad) like Rue and Lexi. Most characters apart from Rue don’t care about drugs or are fully against it because they see what it does to her etc. And sports are a big part of High School in general, but again, most characters have no interest in it. They are all very diverse people, and they represent a wide spectrum of the people you meet on high school and college.
Ig it depends where you live and who you're friends with, kids in my school smoke weed during class, openly drink, and my friends took acid in the bathrooms one time. I've been asked if I had any weed a dozen times by kids I don't know, one guy even offered me coke for free(I didn't take it cuz I'm not stupid). My drug dealer friend bought some off the guy and tested it, it was cut with some pretty bad shit. One kid brought a fucking flamethrower to school. One poor sophomore girl is pregnant. But at the same time I have a few friends that didn't even know how their bodies worked(i.e. their vaginas) until I told them about it. Teens have and will always be fucking insane🤷🏻♀
Also reading the comments and seeing people say they relate to these USA high school experiences is crazy to me. Of course things happened but these dramas make it feel like every kid goes through this when actually 99% of us are the kids in the background.
How would you even come up with that statistic? Life is rough like that for a lot of people and can sometimes lead to bad decisions. I don’t know what part of US you live in but it’s really not that crazy. Euphoria is exaggerated, but it touches on real issues for teenagers unfortunately.
Honestly it is true, my high school is kinda like euphoria but less exaggerated ( drugs, hyper sexuality, scandals, recklessness, etc) . Ones influence and environment is what makes teens they way they are; k-dramas often show sheltered teen ( not all Korean teens are actually like this) while euphoria shows what an unsheltered kid with no guidance looks like ( which isn’t always the case but it’s an often thing).
Dude/girl look at your username. You are a nerd, and you are apparently projecting your reality onto everyone else. I've done it before, it's stupid. Of course not everyone is sexually active in high school, but it's actually like 60/40, not 99/1.
@@katherinecordero472 not at all. I grew up in California. No one I knew around my age were even remotely like the teens in Euphoria… but then again I was a teen in the early 2010’s so maybe a lot has changed 🤷🏻♀️
I think they already reacted to it a couple weeks back, but if you want to get their opinion on the entire show you'll probably have to ask them during one of their livestreams.
Lol respect your opinion but i think it goes with where you live cause where i live most of the American shows depict exactly what goes on in highschool and college 😅
As a high schooler I would disagree, most of what happens in euphoria can relate to what goes down in my high school, unfortunately. It truly depends on the environment and influence of the location.
Drugs were pretty easy to get when I was in highschool but most kids stuck to weed and hallucinogenics. Teens will dress like that, I often dressed like that but I was also known to wear pyjamas to school bc I was foo tired to get ready in the morning. Also I would say the majority of straight kids lost their virginity as a teen and to be a virgin when you graduate (especially for guys) is seen as embarrassing
@@soulaandefender I wasn't saying it is embarrassing it isn't I'm simply saying that our culture pushes the idea that it is but also there's nothing wrong with having sex in highschool and it's not only something done by popular or "bad" kids in my experience. Also, as another kid who was bullied I still don't think it's good to define those people by their past poor childish choices, people can grow up and realize that what they've been was wrong and work very hard to change it and you shouldn't wish harm on someone for something that may very well be a huge regret for them now or later down the line. You don't need to hope that they will feel as bad as they made you feel that's the kind of thinking that leads to kids who were bullied growing up to be bullies themselves.
@@alohatigers1199 I don't see a problem either. I don't think not having sex in highschool is bad but I also don't see anything wrong with having it either so long as you're safe about it. I think wanting to explore sex as a teen is very natural and not being ready is also very natural it depends on the individual
Damn I shouldn't be surprised but I'm still surprised like everything is just totally different. Losing virginity sounds like too normal in there. I heard things like weed, sex, drug and other stuff a lot from my bf who lives in America who is also a student. I'm honestly horrified and worried for him if he ended with wrong person there. Teenage are already doing these things without any control when they are supposed to study and learn things. Damn
When I watch American teen dramas, I always have to remind myself that the show is supposed to take place in high school. I'm in college now and I feel that many of the situations would realistically happen in college over high school.
Yes not all high schoolers are like they portray in this high school tv series. Like not all Korean teens are like the ones in Kdramas, I seen the dark side of some of this kids, smoking and drinking and having sex. Some have UA-cam.
Some people are saying how teen kdrama are cliche and unrealistic but it's not. In Asia that is how teens view the romance as, at least in where I live. I don't mind those teen series plot like you might think it's cliche but to me it just looks a bit exaggerated. Right now I'm watching "our beloved summer" and it's the best series ever, I just feel comfort from it. I wanna talk about American series however I won't say anything since I don't watch any and I've never been to America so I cannot just talk about American teens based on a few series they reacted to.
I'm from Asia myself and yeah the general people might show how their view romance like that because it's kinda taboo in our culture, politics and religion/tradition. But deep underneath you will easily find local's porn as if everybody around are having onlyfans or something. Btw I went to religious school and trust me it wasn't that innocent like the outside cover. I witnessed all those things with my eyes. I can't imagine the other normal schools feel like, since I heard so many rumours and news most of the times. At the end I do believe it's all about the certain area or different groups/gangs. Anyway I don't just watch the series that came from both country. Cause for me those movies/series are just my entertainment and it's not always about relatable content. I pick it wisely since I prefer quality over everything. So I need ratings and reviews first before I jump into it.
@@YourvitamineD Thank you for sharing your point cuz it helps me to see the topic in a different view. mine sounds kinda naive type but thanks to your comment I realized I was being ignorant on the other side. I don't come from a religious school but ya we do have rumors about those not so innocent things as well. Like you said general public do view romance that way but when you search up deep down, we will find things we don't want to.
Kdrama's are just my favourite. I prefer it over American shows in general. You can get a good laugh, a heart flutter, teary eyes and blush all in one episode. Nothing is better than a slow burn, watching the two characters fall in love over a period of time, it's way more satisfying than seeing them jump into bed the first opportunity they get.
I am from Latin America and feel we can relate to both countries here, it's always depends how is your personal life what experiences you get in high school
As a person who grew up in the US especially in East LA, yeah the drug part if real. I’m surprised gangs weren’t shown in this comparison but I guess maybe they’re not as crazy as here in the US. A good amount of my friends were either dealing or consuming drugs which is absolutely crazy to me now that I’m out of that environment and reflect back on it. I was extremely blessed to have parents who kept me in check all the time and never let me go out or hang out with them after school. Alcohol is also real, i know this one dude who actually once brought a bottle of it to school. Yeah my high school life was very … interesting.
My teen years are long past (80's-90's) but I remember the drug scene at that time and it was a group looked upon unfavorably. My clique was odd in that we fit in with the preppy smart kids and the stoners, we went to both kinds of parties and they did the same stuff just at different price ranges.
I found it funny that at 1:17 the girl asked if there is any interesting kdrama, because i'm from Europe, Portugal and I only find k dramas interesting compared to America's. And she being a Korean kind of put me in a weird place because she should be seeing or should know about how her culture and country is evolving in this aspect, I think kdramas have a more interesting plot without putting to much sexual tension or relationship. Their plot is so interesting in so many aspects, the story and the character development is truly amazing.
Yeah I watch Hotel de Luna lately its very good despite the lack of sexual intimacy of characters because I expected it to be sexual since it has horror element on it like here on the U.S.
I grew up watching these American teenage shows and when I switched to Korean shows, I realize the drastic change in culture and how teens are portrayed. American television is just mature and portrays such unrealistic aspects of the teenage life that teenagers here try to replicate these shows and lifestyles. I prefer Korean shoes for how much family friendly it is
Yes, a lot of people in middle school and high school dress showing a lot in America. In school, we dress normally but when we hang out or party with others, we dress like maddy from euphoria
I’d love to see them react to a variety of UK shows/films for once like the Inbetweeners, Life on Mars, Primeval, St Trinians (2007 & 2009), pride and prejudice, being human, poldark, Worzel gummidge (2019-), only fools and horses, Jonathan creek, midsomer murders, Whitechapel, Angus thongs and perfect snogging, Legend (starring Tom hardy) etc
@เอียน แมทธิว Have you even watched it ? They are NOT encouraging anyone. The maker of the show used to be a drug addict himself and he is telling his story. The show frequently dispicts how drug usage destroys family, friends and everyone around you. They even showed an overdose. The show deals with trauma, loss, death and mental illness. These things are real problems that young people face and they have a right to be portrayed in a show, that does NOT mean it's encouraging anyone.
But Never Have I Ever is pretty good imo!! I think it's more realistic for the average american teen than gossip girl or euphoria. I'd love to see them react to more of it.
That's the reason why I added Korean shows to my list. Our Beloved Summer is a favourite! I grew up watching American shows and I dropped most of them for the unnecessary content...
I just started watching Korean Dramas and feel the same! I don't feel like watching unnecessary sex scenes left and right when I'm just trying to chill. It gets old real quick
No matter how "innocent/sweet" these K-teen dramas are portrayed, the reality is that most teens are doing things they shouldn't be doing regardless of where they are raised. I've read plenty of comments that drag and make fun of the American Teen dramas for being too much and etc and praise Kdramas for being "innocent and pure" but ignore that in reality teens around the world are engaging in behaviors that are depicted in the American drama and that a lot of them do experience and experiment just like any regular American teen or heck any teen around the world.
As a Korean, I have only one thing to say about Korean high-teen dramas. The scenery of the school in Korean dramas is too beautiful. Of course, it doesn't mean that such a beautiful school doesn't exist (Korean high-teen dramas are mainly filmed in very beautiful schools), but most of the schools are located in the middle of the city, and there will be large apartment complexes around them. The schools I attended were well-groomed and had many flowers blooming every season, so they belonged to the beautiful side, but the school scenery of Korean high-teen dramas looks like a small palace, not a school.
It’s interesting how they reacted to eurphoria bc to me its normal to see teens dressed like that. Actually I thought “I wish I could look that good while wearing that”😂
Its crazy because there was distinguishing factor between the two. Korean drama's is all sappy and cheesy and American dramas is about sex and drugs. I am American but I had never went through stuff like that during my high school years so I wouldn't generalize but I can see some definitely has. I do favor east Asian shows more because its kinda like of an escape from American TV shows that always depict this but also Korean shows can get bit repetitive to. That's why kinda switch back and forth from time to time to help keep my interest up. Other than that I really enjoyed this video and hope you guys do more reactions in the future.
Maybe that’s why I started watching Korean series these days. I’m used to the cliches. This sweet and light hearted tone. Maybe that’s why so many Americans like anime, specifically the Japanese Asian girl stuff. Real life issues on a fictional story like series turns me off and makes me not watch to watch them.
I hate people labeling American teen shows about sex and drugs when it’s so much more, American shows I feel like go into the real dark side of being teen
To the ppl who r saying all kdramas r unrealistic and American ones rnt r clearly ignorant lol. I am an aisan who grew up in Asia but later moved on to USA, kdrama ones rnt that unrealistic cuz we r actually like that cuz of our conservative culture and traditions. Even usa high-schools rnt like euphoria too💀. Yall need to know about cultural differences. I relate to the kdramas more for being an Asian. Most of us rnt open to teen sex or let alone casual hookup culture and drugs and it's true blv it or not.
It's a broad stroke to say unrealistic in general, but it certainly is in terms of all the romance and lovey dovey aspects, Korea has a lot of leniency when it comes to sexual assault and bullying that gets mentioned very little. Of course every country faces these issues but Korea portrays itself like a dream sequence, and rarely tackles dark issues. Also, sex parlor rooms and businesses that are all over Korea is never discussed but it's widely known, i remember politicians wanting to exempt these establishments from COVID rules...why? Cause more often than not these politicians and celebs visit them...this type of shit would be in an American show ASAP in Korea not so much...maybe a movie, maybe. That's the difference. Their reality is sugar coated.
@@meiji1815 yes, culture difference is keeping quiet while it's still known that everyone still does the same shit that the west does. How do you expect to progress...given the recent election, more than 5 years for SK...i guess.
@@GoGoPooerRangers yes shady businesses exist just like every where but these things rnt normalized and looked upon. There r many shows where u will find bullying and other issues and other dark concepts but those r targeted for mature audiences not for young audiences. Just cuz of these issues doesn't portray majority just like euphoria normalizes and exaggerates these "dark concepts." It's glamorized for It's makeup, sexual appeals etc. They be doing everything except studying and almost every western teen dramas r like that. Partying, sex, drugs etc. Takeout everything this show is famous for, and it's a basic show with no plot lol, except zendaya's character which is the only realistic here. Which school is this inappropriate? Not even usa schools lol. Atleast Korean school environment is realistic and the pressure of being a student is also realistic in some dramas. It's true that Korean youth isn't like western ones. Our school (high-schools too) would start at 8 and finish at 10 pm , we didn't even have time to do other things,, and most students care about their studies. Image is a BIG thing in korea. Once it's doomed, it's gone. The whole drama I feel is unlike other kdramas where yes its very interesting to watch and fun, this however is more realistic, it shows the growth of the characters and has many fun yet emotional points, that built up to that kiss is just amazing! I applaud all the actors for their amazing acting, and the cinematograph is just a 10/10! You won't regret it!
Being a high school student in America is really up to the area you’re in, the school you’re at, and who you hang out with. It’s also based on how you are as a student. I dress how I want since my school has no dress code, and I’ve skipped classes from time to time but i’m still a straight A student 🤷♀️
obviously not every high school girl in the u.s would wear what maddys wearing but there are girls who do, it’s not really uncommon (especially if it’s outside of school)
When I was in high school, drugs were very common amongst students, mostly hallucinogens and weed but sometimes painkillers and amphetamines. I only stuck to weed in high school but definitely dealt with some wild ppl during my time there.
As a current high school student living in America I much rather prefer kdramas over American dramas. Kdramas are so comforting to watch and they show the innocence of love meanwhile American dramas from what I’ve seen only like to show the intimate side of love. American tv shows are so hyper sexual and for no reason, shows like Euphoria I find hard to enjoy and see the good in, yes it does help raise awareness to things such as teen dating violence but it doesn’t display certain messages the right and appropriate way in my opinion. Also those in the comments that say that Kdramas don’t portray deep or realistic messages are more than wrong, there are plenty of high school kdramas that portray and bring light to serious things that occur in society. ‘SKY Castle’ ‘Extracurricular’ ‘The Penthouse’ ‘School 2013’ ‘True beauty’ etc. all do a fantastic job in displaying and presenting certain messages. A show doesn’t need to be as vulgar, disturbing, and uncensored as some American shows to properly get across a message.
im the exact opposite lol. i think the only kdramas i can stomach are ones about people in their 30-40s and society. cant have romance ruining it lol i disagree with you last sentnce so to speak on american dramas but i do agree that a show like euphoria specifically can be portrayed diffrently.
@@melody3629 If you are not into romance but still want to watch story about teenage or high school, I think k-dramas she mention above will be suit you, they not heavily focused on romance except True Beauty. SKY Castle, Extracurricular, Class of Lies, Beautiful World and School 2013 are show I recommend for people who don't like cliche romance high school drama, they talk more about darker part of being high schooler and the school system in south korea, such as bullying, high pressure for studying, and child prostitution .
kdramas shoves romance into everything even where it's not needed and their focus is only few main characters, there are only very few kdramas i managed to watch without discontinuing. while i get get many people don't like the nudity in western shows but they potrays so many troples like found family, parental, sibling relationships, friendships.
@@amnanasir473 I couldn’t disagree more, while a vast majority of kdramas are about romance there is such a huge variety that don’t necessarily focus on love but rather incorporate it in. Not all kdramas are about love and romance, there are different tropes, it seems to like you’ve only scratched the surface of kdramas. A really good kdrama that I’d like to recommend that focuses heavily on family, parental, sibling relationship and friendships would be ‘Reply 1988’ it’s a truly incredible drama.
I had no idea "Our Beloved Summer" was a k-drama! I've been reading the webtoon so when I saw the thumbnail I saw the resemblance between the characters, time to go watch it now 😅
For American teens, where you live and the people you hang out with really affect how you dress and the way you behave most times. The Ametican drama they showed are not true reflections of the life of an American teenager. Korean dramas, which I love, tend to focus more on teenage innocence and heavy duty to study.
as an Korean American, i can't relate to american teen series. i didnt do drugs or have sex as a teen, so kdramas are up my alley. i grew up with it and the story is more relatable.
Although Euphoria is quite exaggerated, there is a huge drug problem in almost every high-school, many middle schools, and even vapes in elementary schools. Also most schools have dress codes but very scandalous clothes is normal to see when hanging out.
I fucking love kdramas rn I’m watching 25/21 and business proposal I just finished juvenile justice too! I stopped consuming American teen shows because of all the nudity and sexual content like it’s really unnecessary and disturbing I watched euphoria but through clips on twitter and tiktok to avoid the unnecessary scenes 💀
In States also it really depends. If u have a group of friends who study and have a goal for their life it's not much different from Korea. Ofc culture aside, and some fun times aside, there are teens who are very responsible and work a job or 2 during summer to make some extra money for college or some even work on community projects to gain that extra exp. Really depends on which part you are living in. From that stand point ya they are much mature than students of their own age too cuz some other are drinking, partying and sleeping tgt. Those are head and tails of same coin. But ya that's how it is.

Most of these "teenage actor's" are actually young adults playing as teenagers because it would be weird and inappropriate having underage teens act out some of these scenes.
Jm surprised he made the "they look 30" comment on never have I ever. That's one of the few teen shows that actually casted well. Not teenagers obviously but actors in their early 20s much as like in kdramas
Growing up in the USA when I was in high school back in the 2000’s we worried about college 50/50 I would say and smoking weed was the only so called bad drug… it wasn’t until after high school and probably 2010’s that harder drugs was a lot easier to get now and Euphoria imo glamorizes drugs because growing up in that lifestyle and getting out of that lifestyle is rock bottom all the time it sucks and everyone is shady AF you lose friends, friends F*** you over, you learn to become selfish for yourself and only yourself especially if you want to get out of that lifestyle. Loyalty doesn’t exist and I makes you second question that word in general
the fact that they put them the original gossip girl, lmao. also, I was thinking about why didnt put them SKINS, where the actors were actually younger (kaya was 14 on the first ep) when the other girl mentioned it.
7:38 I was born in 97 so I grew up when it was still "your future is based on getting into college and what college you go to" so your whole life depended on on that so if you were to young to work volunteer work would be on your college resume. I couldnt find anywhere that'd let me volunteer or work at when I could legally work at 14 so I had to go to a community College which was pointless😑 kids today dont understand how good they have it because back then it was so much harder to do anything even the ability to work for yourself now 9 year olds make more then a full time worker back then did so yeah.
Korean teen dramas or general dramas are meant for young girls who can fantasize about two handsome men simping for them..and now american ones are moving towards that as well.
This just reminded me that Korea doesn’t really have sexual education for their students the way we do in America. Granted American education isn’t the same across the board but sex education is still a staple over here. Maybe that’s why we’re used to discussing it as teens while Korean don’t really talk abt it until their 20s
I’m not a Korean teenager but I think American teen drama are more accurate in a sense which I why I personally like them. But I think I like Teen k dramas because there not as close to reality and more sweet compared to Western dramas
Lol watch euphoria. That one is a wild ride. Messy, esthetically pleasing, a mixture of fantasy drama and real life shit that in its own way, helps paint a clear picture of what some young people in the US are dealing with. It's not a perfect representation but it gets its points across I think or it at least makes you think more, as you become more sympathetic to each character. I'd love to hear opinions of those outside of North America reacting to this show.
The kdramas selected for comparison purposes were real innocent. What happened to heirs, extraordinary (which is a high school boy saving up money to go to college by being a pimp), or any other ones were the students come of more mature or out of control. Meanwhile there are high school shows that have range to if you did want to go more innocent like that's so raven or any Disney channel shows. You could have even shown on my block which shows things like this but more realistic
Do keep in mind that things like Euphoria are NOT marketed to teens. (And they're all 25 due to child labor laws. You can make a young looking 25 year old work for days on end, but an actual child has to go to school, though they get around this with twin child actors sometimes.)
I love Kdramas's they are so different from what we see here. and it's funny how some girls (my sister for example) wishes guys here in the US where more like guys in Kdramas
I used to watch American teen dramas but not anymore cause they dont act like highs schoolers but university kids who only think about sex. And I'm literally watching Our beloved summer and I really love it. Also the parents in Sky Castle are really suffocating. And I think all parents say the same that everything will be fine once you enter college.
I think for everyone it's always the saying that grass is greener on the other side because I personally would always pick kdramas over American teen dramas anyday...I don't particularly watch teen kdramas but I have watched some and really liked them...I seriously think that Koreans should start appreciating their kdramas because as someone who has watched dramas from all over the world...South Korea is really making some quality content
A lot of clean teen series’s and movies are available but usually they are marketed at a younger audience such as High School Musical and other Disney shows and movies. There were a lot of good ones in the 90s and early 2000s. As someone who went to an American high school you are exposed to the knowledge and have access to sex and drugs but most teens are just wanting to finish school. There is a lot of people having sex underage but it’s not how you see it on tv.
I have watched both types of series/dramas and American teen shows are usually edgy/dark and always involves sex while most Korean teen shows are uplifting/pure romance type of drama, not all but MOST.
i would love to see them react to western lgbtq shows (young royals, skam, sex education, fear street) vs korean ones since there are a number of lgbtq korean shows on the rise lately :)

To live as a teenager in the American dramas it all really depends on where you live and who you hang out with. Other than that most teens just do the usual eating out with friends or shopping or staying home, or that’s in my case since I live in a small town and the kids who do drugs all hang out together.

True! Incel futurism man…
Yo this the best description of it imo. We don’t get out like they used to.
yeah. and sometimes youth today start having sex later for good reasons (responsibility, not feeling ready, not wanting to get pregnant) while other times it's due to increased levels of social isolation and mental illness than in previous generations (i think we can blame most of it on the internet and the increasing crushing weight of capitalism). i am in the latter category, unfortunately. i'm a 22 year old virgin due to depression and crippling social anxiety. i used to dwell on it a lot and be really sad about it but now i'm less so bc i realised so many people nowadays suffer from this problem. i'm now going to therapy which helped me raise my self esteem, curb anxiety a little and i am now finally able to make friends!
and i'm about to start anti-anxiety meds which will hopefully help even further 😁
point is, parents are so worried about the new generation being "promiscuous", meanwhile their generation was far more promiscuous despite all the media censorship. and the current social climate often creates the opposite of "promiscuous" people - it creates socially awkward hermits.

To be precise, Koreans are very interested in idol groups when they are in their teens, but when they are in their 20s, they don't listen to kpop idols well except for some good songs.

Now that I think about it, I wish American teen shows/movies would be more diverse with how we are depicted. Like not all of us only think about sex or sports or drugs. Give us something different instead of recycling the same stereotypes over and over. You know what…I’m gonna write my own show!!
There are shows like that....Disney exist.
@@mt6897 but everyone knows what euphoria focuses on so no it does not check what the person commenting wants.

Maybe it depends where you lived. Cause I'm in high school now and nobody dresses crazy like the girls in euphoria.
Damn I shouldn't be surprised but I'm still surprised like everything is just totally different. Losing virginity sounds like too normal in there. Some people are saying how teen kdrama are cliche and unrealistic but it's not. In Asia that is how teens view the romance as, at least in where I live. No, it's not. In asia? what Asia? We're not crazy cringe asians like y'all. Stay in your culture kid, days now are not like before. 😬
I'm from Asia myself and yeah the general people might show how their view romance like that because it's kinda taboo in our culture, politics and religion/tradition. But deep underneath you will easily find local's porn as if everybody around are having onlyfans or something.
@เอียน แมทธิว then shut up nobody wants too hear your opinion on a show you didn't watch pack it up and leave bro
I'm the one who sucker for "Our beloved summer". Kdramas for life 💜
I loved sky castle. That father with the pyramid was nuts.
But Never Have I Ever is pretty good imo!! I think it's more realistic for the average american teen than gossip girl or euphoria. I'd love to see them react to more of it.
i had a culture shock that left me pensive for a few months at school about how I can live innocently compared to the teens in the Euphoria series
Yeah um maybe for america i guess, but thats not the reality of the whole world u know, Not all of us behave like that.
@@iiiiii7739 I hope I can watch American show where teens are more depicted on the lighter side and Kdrama where teens are depicted on the darker side
@@rexgeorgerodriguez7620 there are shows like that.
"I'm obsessed with kdramas"
Gurl , your represented entire comment section
To the ppl who r saying all kdramas r unrealistic and American ones rnt r clearly ignorant lol. I am an aisan who grew up in Asia but later moved on to USA, kdrama ones rnt that unrealistic cuz we r actually like that cuz of our conservative culture and traditions. Even usa high-schools rnt like euphoria too💀. Yall need to know about cultural differences. I relate to the kdramas more for being an Asian. Most of us rnt open to teen sex or let alone casual hookup culture and drugs and it's true blv it or not.
Exactly westerners did not think about cultural differences and additionally not think about not everyone is having the same experience as them
It's a broad stroke to say unrealistic in general, but it certainly is in terms of all the romance and lovey dovey aspects, Korea has a lot of leniency when it comes to sexual assault and bullying that gets mentioned very little.
They don't try to portray themselves as innocent, life can be dark and these issues shouldn't be held in just because it might offend.
As a conservative country they try to keep it family friendly so that everyone can enjoy regardless of age. And there r popular teen dramas too where bullying is portrayed. Few ppl might be drug addicted or where is shown in western ones, still rare lol.. we don't go around Partying, fvcking etc and I'm saying this on behalf of most teens not adults, all tho it's pretty same for them too. As I said by most Asian countries r like this. U will see many bad things in media, but that doesn't mean it's common or normal.
@@GoGoPooerRangers lmao u r gonna convince ME? "everyone does the same shit as west," no they don't lol. U r only seeing one side which doesn't even apply to majority.
I’ve noticed them asking questions about how american school is often in these videos, i’m just waiting for the day they meet an american HS or college student so they can ask all their questions
You should show them Norwegian graduation, it’s a month full of partying!

@@nescaferedmug7353 bullshit
@@nescaferedmug7353 sigh, there is really no point in replying to such a baseless reply that seems to be written by a judgemental 12-year-old kid honestly, but I just have to say, this drama is very heartwarming and realistic, cringe would be maybe ep 15 when Yeonsoo asked her colleague for dating advice (that part was cute though), for others who are interested, just be prepared to laugh and cry for each episode that comes, the last episode is very satisfying yet realistic.
Aww I wish these were longer it’s so fun to see the comparisons
@@amnanasir473 Both are quite similar then. Even kdramas show family, sibling relationship.
I had no idea "Our Beloved Summer" was a k-drama! I've been reading the webtoon so when I saw the thumbnail I saw the resemblance between the characters, time to go watch it now 😅
You're not gonna regret it!
For American teens, where you live and the people you hang out with really affect how you dress and the way you behave most times. The Ametican drama they showed are not true reflections of the life of an American teenager. Korean dramas, which I love, tend to focus more on teenage innocence and heavy duty to study.
as for euphoria, yes highschoolers do dress like that. some, not ALL... it's very common..
as an Korean American, i can't relate to american teen series. i didnt do drugs or have sex as a teen, so kdramas are up my alley. i grew up with it and the story is more relatable.
Korean drama always❤❤our beloved summer beautiful drama🥰❤️
i need youngju’s drama playlist. we share same taste
1:20 yess idk if anyone is watching “twenty five twenty one” but it’s probably the best drama of this year yet!😍 I don’t watch school dramas but this!!

i love the girl in yellow!
Most of these "teenage actor's" are actually young adults playing as teenagers because it would be weird and inappropriate having underage teens act out some of these scenes.
Their reaction as soon as the see Gossip Girl clip.
“Are real American students like that?”
here in Las Vegas they are. 100%
They are 100% not this is a wild generalization
I'm surprised they didn't find Degrassi. I always felt that one was super relatable, even if most teens now probably have never heard of it 😅
Girl in video: " A high-school students wouldn't dress like that, right?"
Thirteen year olds on tiktok: 👀
the fact that they put them the original gossip girl, lmao. also, I was thinking about why didnt put them SKINS, where the actors were actually younger (kaya was 14 on the first ep) when the other girl mentioned it.
I really liked Never Have I Ever!! Such unique main character and diverse cast
Omg! Gossip Girl! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ My fav show ever!
This just reminded me that Korea doesn’t really have sexual education for their students the way we do in America.
Granted American education isn’t the same across the board but sex education is still a staple over here. Maybe that’s why we’re used to discussing it as teens while Korean don’t really talk abt it until their 20s
Me who watches anime and has never seen either:
✨Interesting✨
I’m not a Korean teenager but I think American teen drama are more accurate in a sense which I why I personally like them. But I think I like Teen k dramas because there not as close to reality and more sweet compared to Western dramas
Yeah if you are so stressed enough you can watch Kdramas without the risks of triggers.
Oh my- so Our Beloved Summer is very Popular in Korea..
They should definitely do a react to Heartstopper now that it’s out! So refreshing and amazing!
WE NEED MORE EUPHORIA CONTENT!!!
"Looks like Chacha" I thought the same 😄
i know its not a teen drama but i love crash landing on you thats probably my fave k drama !
There is a lot of people having sex underage but it’s not how you see it on tv.
btw there are lots of US teens movies too like K teens drama😅
I have watched both types of series/dramas and American teen shows are usually edgy/dark and always involves sex while most Korean teen shows are uplifting/pure romance type of drama, not all but MOST.
i would love to see them react to western lgbtq shows (young royals, skam, sex education, fear street) vs korean ones since there are a number of lgbtq korean shows on the rise lately :)
