Tuba Skinny makes what I think is their first visit to my town, the Twin Cities, this week. Various mobility issues prevent me from attending, which is why I cherish the way people like Rene keep feeding TS videos to me. This is one I have not seen before, and of course it is a gem!
I have only just discovered this video. Thanks, René. If you are still in need of the tune title, it is the intriguing 'Tangled Blues', which , you may remember, was composed by Shaye Cohn in 2015 and included on Tuba Skinny's album 'Nigel's Dream' in 2018.
Yes, this is the first time I've seen it. The sound is compressed with high gain and echo and gives the band a different sound. It's a much more commercial sound, and it's shockingly good. Love Shaye's stockinged foot to end the song. Thanks much for identifying the song. Erika's powerful and affecting vocal recapitulates Tuba Skinny's journey in a strange way. It synthesizes several styles and moves toward country R&B but with much more modern chords, in somewhat the same way that Newgrass abstracts from and reharmonizes Bluegrass. The melody line is among the more poppish and anthemic pieces that the band has done, but it's inventive and maintains their immaculate taste. The video is interesting in many other ways. You can see Greg and Jason check out each other's fingerings, the tuba solo uses non-traditional chords (Todd's melodic low register solo is an inspiration!) to approach the turn-around, and the band plays through obvious fatigue to reach a sweet spot in performance that combines professionalism and pleasure. In their fatigue, we're able to see what Shaye will look like in 20 years.
