Ah, my favourite line up to this day. M18 Black Cat, M18 GMC, M42, the 20mm F4U-4B, the AM1. I have talisman for all of them, so it is a real RP and SL earning lineup. It's also a very toxic lineup
Attempt 11 Challenge: For high tier support a nations MBT with its respective APC/IFV counterpart (ie Abrams/Bradley, T90/BMP2M, etc.) Challenge is keeping the other player alive and supporting it without stealing kills (breaking barrels, tracking, repairing, etc) it being a random should help make it interesting.
3:00. You don't hear much about the hellcat historically for a few reasons. Primarily because they were intended for a reactionary defensive role to mass guns rapidly against some large German push which rarely materialized compared to reports from earlier in the war on the eastern front. So they spend a lot of time slinging HE in firesupport for infantry and other roles (as while an M18's armor won't do much against other tanks. It's pretty good at shrugging off rifle/mg fire). By the end of the war IIRC they had a 2.4:1 KD in destroyed tanks according to Zaloga's book, but I can't remember if that was exclusively "they destroyed 2.4 tanks per hellcat lost in combat with tanks" or "they destroyed 2.4 tanks per hellcat lost to any cause" Zaloga doesn't seem like them much though.
As fun as the M18 is in game, it’s kinda redundant in history with only its speed being something unique, but even then that caused them to over extend and go too fast for friendly vehicles. Its gun was also redundant as a tank destroyer since some Shermans already had the same firepower and it really just ended up becoming yet another chassis in the already growing logistical nightmare of the US armor inventory. The M36 was what the program that made the M18 really wanted.
Meanwhile warthunder playerbase: No you can’t add more tech trees, it’s boring and will be copy paste. US with Shermans, Stuarts and more Shermans: Sweating
Not sure what he was on about there, the sherman's armor is pretty solid for a medium tank, it's not gonna do much against 88s and the like of course but it'll protect you from autocannons that'll shred M18s and it bounces the occasional shot if you angle well.
@@zoro115-s6bthe m18s armor being almost non existent alot of times doesnt fuse shells so they just fly through the whole vehicle in a way making it more effecrive than the shermans armor xD, although yeah autocannons and heavy machine guns shred it
Spookston: The Hellcat is perfectly balanced Gaijin: So your fancy premium is now 60hp short compared to the others because 'hIsToRiCaL aCcUrAcY' (while we ignore the M1 KVT), oh, and they're all going to 6.0. Have fun!
Some logic behind the hullbreak makes sense. If M18 gets hit by 75L70 in the breech, I don't really think the turret can take the momentum of the shell without getting displaced, which essentialy means - an important piece of the tank is no longer properly attached. I've read about T-34 getting hit by 88L71 in the engine. Engine got ripped out of the chassis. So imagine what would occur if similar storry happened to even a smaller vehicle. Would the crew still be alive? Maybe! But with engine gone and a fireball in its place, the vehicle would be a goner. Of course in WT tank fire is usually absolutely harmless, unless it's a fuel explosion. IRL if you have a burning pit where once engine was - nobody is staying in the vehicle to find out what happens.
Hullbreak is definitely a mechanic that should have remained in WT, but the amount of tweaking it would require was not worth the effort. Periscope is an external module so here's the counter example: imagine hitting M18 with 152mm APHE shell which fails to fuze. That M18 is still in battle... depite having a high 152mm ventilation tunnel all along it's side which together with welds giving up under such stress would mean that that hull has no structural integrity left behind it whatsoever. Or another example would be those reports of SU-152 mission kills on Tigers where a concrete busting round was utterly destroying turret ring, roof that it was a part of and heavily deforming turret and hull of the Tiger... and then Tiger continues to fight.
When he said "it's 3am" my brain went "but it's daytime in the video, how early is sunrise in his part of the world!?" Took me a moment to remember that video games can be daytime even if it's dark outside. I am not clever.
Finding Spookston was a blessing for me, he has taught me me so much I didn’t know about the game despite having 700 hours in the game. Like, copula shots are something I never knew I could do until I started watching him.
I absolutely love the hellcat, it's still one of the vehicles I have the highest win rates in. It'll be strange when it goes up to 6.0, but I'm not too upset about it
7:18 yeah i remember hullbreak and m18 wasnt that affected by it, pt-76 with heat one shot m18 BUT only when hit hull, if pt-76 hit m18 turret then no hullbreak (guess its in the name), BUT the buggest annoyance was when panther, tiger or even is-2 could not hullbreak m18 when hit hull side, m18 only got hullbreak when hit frontaly, but that killed them either way if you wanna play something fun then i suggest the Hungarian Turán and Zrínyi tanks
Always nice to learn something new about tanks in your videos like the extended rail for hellcats power pack. Very cool little things that are for me sometimes more important than the gameplay itself. Thanks for that and for adding the pictures as well.
"You never really hear about the Hellcat" I think that's in part because, though it did a lot of good work in WWII, it failed to properly replace the M10. Although the M18 improved on the M10 in many ways, it had a different layout and more notably had less armor. Some people didn't mind because the M18 can stop bullets and it's not like the M10 was going to stop much late war munitions anyways, but between the thin armor and needing to learn an entirely new layout a lot of groups armed with the M10 elected to keep using it instead of the M18.
Oh my god, my brain just connected the dots. I started watching this channel for the "If the *insert tank here* was historically accurate videos. I literally only just realized that my favorite WT meme channel is the same channel as those videos! My brain is fighting for its life right now lol
7:47 If I remember correctly, hull break was gapenning. when you hit cannon (barrel or/and breach) or transmaission (not periscope). IMHO it was better, than overpressure, not ideal though...
Hey spookston it’s not that it was too late to make a difference but in fact refused to outright use it. They wanted something more mobile but the same armor as a m10 so becoming a faster tank with a lot less armor became issue for crews so they said I’ll stick with m10 basically until they got the m36 into production. With only thirteen millimeters on the front hull, the M18’s armor was less than that of the M8 armored car. Of the nineteen tank destroyer battalions allocated for the invasion of France only 3 were equipped with the Hellcat prior to landing in Normandy. You have to think that the crews went from the half track with a 75 mm canon in North African to the m10 than the m18 I don’t think they would want to go back to a lightly armored tank destroyer again
I've been waiting for a black cat video for FOREVER. This tank is so ridiculously good. It was the first premium I ever bought and I have thousands of kills with it. It's my #1 played tank
I feel like the reason why the Hellcat doesn’t get recognition along with the M36 was when they were apart of the war. Most people when the think of the western front is really only Normandy and maybe the battle of the bulge which the M36 and hellcat weren’t really present for and their documentation is more limited. The hellcat did have an impact. It was an absolute menace to German tanks, even more so than any other U.S. armored vehicles (considering the Sherman kinda wiped the floor with German vehicles, 3.4:1 K/D against panther go brrrt). However most of those impacts were in lesser known battles and campaigns like the battle of arracourt which doesn’t get as much attention despite being one of the largest tank on tank engagements, probably because it was like an abrams fighting a ww1 tank. It wasn’t quite fair for Germany. Also, play any American 7.3, it is the best br in the game because it’s straight up only downtiers
Day 51 You should play a tank with hydropneumatic suspension (recommend the MBT-70) But the catch is you have to drop the suspension as low as it can go for the whole match.
Hill break is actually still in the game. It applies to the tank train on the newer map with the Running Track and the Blimp and it might also apply to the train on American Desert
Crews preferred the m10 because of slightly more armor, based on a reliable chassis, plus they didn't have to retrain. The m18 was a great td but under the circumstances it didn't have the chance to shine until after ww2
The thing with scouting is, I think, that the M18 gets scouting because its classified as Light Tank (for whatever reason) while in actuality it was used as a TD. The ELC Bis on the other hand is classified as a TD, so it doenst get scouting
The M18 was actually my main tank of choice for TD Tasks Sadly it did got changed to a Light Tank way back. As for the ASU-57 that is more or less a hybrid of a Light Tank and TD Not sure how you would call a Turretless Light Tank that is supposed to be Air dropped from a Plane with a Parachute.
back many years ago it was the next tank after the AT halftrack and was much lower BR, i came back many years later to try the game and my whole lineup was messed up and spread across 3 tiers
I recently unlocked the hellcat and that shit is so good. I can go from point to point stupid fast and on smaller maps, you can rush to the enemy spawn and ambush them just as they’re going out,out maneuvering and repositioning, the enemy is so easy, if only it had a stabilizerthis, thing is the bread and butter of the American 5.7 tech tree I can’t believe they even Nerf this thing it’s so good

Ah, my favourite line up to this day. M18 Black Cat, M18 GMC, M42, the 20mm F4U-4B, the AM1. I have talisman for all of them, so it is a real RP and SL earning lineup. It's also a very toxic lineup
Damn, villain arc Spookston and I'm here for it XD
7:45 the entire enemy team is being scouted lol
I saw a hellcat in real life for the first time, and it was so cool to see that a thing that size can go so fast
When playing aircrafts with wing mounted guns try to set target at 300/400 meters, it helps a lot especially when you have a ton of 50. Cals
That's a fun challenge ngl !
@@nobody5217 Question is if Spookston can carry a average Joe to a nuke
By the end of the war IIRC they had a 2.4:1 KD in destroyed tanks according to Zaloga's book, but I can't remember if that was exclusively "they destroyed 2.4 tanks per hellcat lost in combat with tanks" or "they destroyed 2.4 tanks per hellcat lost to any cause"
Zaloga doesn't seem like them much though.
The fact that they're moving this to 6.0 is criminal.
what really ?
@@ICE-jr7npyeah its going up, and the super hellcat is going to 6.3
@@tbomb69 no its going to 6.7... mad
@@nattly6340 I know they making them 7.0 by 2025
Seriously? Ffs, this is fucking germany mains again isn't it.
Spook playing the best tank to get cased, as a known cas magnet are probably his favourite gameplays

"The armor on the Sherman isn't much more effective"
No need to remind the american mains how their entire tech tree is essentially Sherman
Meanwhile warthunder playerbase:
No you can’t add more tech trees, it’s boring and will be copy paste.
US with Shermans, Stuarts and more Shermans: Sweating
There are almost 40 shermans in warthunder 💀
Not sure what he was on about there, the sherman's armor is pretty solid for a medium tank, it's not gonna do much against 88s and the like of course but it'll protect you from autocannons that'll shred M18s and it bounces the occasional shot if you angle well.
@@zoro115-s6bthe m18s armor being almost non existent alot of times doesnt fuse shells so they just fly through the whole vehicle in a way making it more effecrive than the shermans armor xD, although yeah autocannons and heavy machine guns shred it
love the little history at 04:04
Spookston: The Hellcat is perfectly balanced
Gaijin: So your fancy premium is now 60hp short compared to the others because 'hIsToRiCaL aCcUrAcY' (while we ignore the M1 KVT), oh, and they're all going to 6.0.
Spookston and being tired and/or sick, name a more iconic duo
that edit at 2:28 is fantastic
The fighting back has to be some of the funniest stuff I’ve seen in a while
Hullbreak is definitely a mechanic that should have remained in WT, but the amount of tweaking it would require was not worth the effort.
„You either die like a hero or live long enough to become a villain…” Basically Spookston with CAS

When he said "it's 3am" my brain went "but it's daytime in the video, how early is sunrise in his part of the world!?"
Took me a moment to remember that video games can be daytime even if it's dark outside. I am not clever.
Part with bs sponsor ends 02:05
Thanks man
Finding Spookston was a blessing for me, he has taught me me so much I didn’t know about the game despite having 700 hours in the game. Like, copula shots are something I never knew I could do until I started watching him.
I absolutely love the hellcat, it's still one of the vehicles I have the highest win rates in. It'll be strange when it goes up to 6.0, but I'm not too upset about it
I like Spookston turning into an old man with "You probably don't remember this but back in my day" about hull break
13:25 Spookston villain arc, it feels too good though
7:18 yeah i remember hullbreak and m18 wasnt that affected by it, pt-76 with heat one shot m18 BUT only when hit hull, if pt-76 hit m18 turret then no hullbreak (guess its in the name), BUT the buggest annoyance was when panther, tiger or even is-2 could not hullbreak m18 when hit hull side, m18 only got hullbreak when hit frontaly, but that killed them either way
if you wanna play something fun then i suggest the Hungarian Turán and Zrínyi tanks
Always nice to learn something new about tanks in your videos like the extended rail for hellcats power pack. Very cool little things that are for me sometimes more important than the gameplay itself. Thanks for that and for adding the pictures as well.
Americans when they don't have a stabilizer below 8.0 😢
Only thing that makes the shermans worth anything
They don’t have a stabilizer at 8.0 either
"You never really hear about the Hellcat"
I think that's in part because, though it did a lot of good work in WWII, it failed to properly replace the M10.
Spookston mentioned hull break and sent me back a couple years. I never want to live through that again
6:10 most intelligent Cas player
I think the M18 is the ground vehicle I've had the most plane kills with, something about a single top mounted M2 just resonates with me.
2:35 the horror I felt through the screen lol
Day 51 You should play a tank with hydropneumatic suspension (recommend the MBT-70) But the catch is you have to drop the suspension as low as it can go for the whole match.
13:18 spookston has had enough
13:19 this was very satisfying 👌
I'm from the UK. I agree with you the 76 is the most satisfying to use!
Hill break is actually still in the game. It applies to the tank train on the newer map with the Running Track and the Blimp and it might also apply to the train on American Desert
This is the start of evil Spookston's arc, and I'm all for it!
7:25 yeah hull break, I remember how you could hull break Warrior by firing MG from side at the boxes in the back, or centauro by hitting the wheel
I’m loving spookston’s new approach to CAS
Crews preferred the m10 because of slightly more armor, based on a reliable chassis, plus they didn't have to retrain. The m18 was a great td but under the circumstances it didn't have the chance to shine until after ww2
Spookston revenge bombing revenge bombers is the start of his villain arc. I am 100% for this
“I’m tired of being the bigger man”
The thing with scouting is, I think, that the M18 gets scouting because its classified as Light Tank (for whatever reason) while in actuality it was used as a TD.
The ELC Bis on the other hand is classified as a TD, so it doenst get scouting
Thank you for bringing attention to the ELC's spotting problem
14:00 Spookston memes are always top tier 😂😂😂
The M18 was actually my main tank of choice for TD Tasks
Sadly it did got changed to a Light Tank way back.
As for the ASU-57 that is more or less a hybrid of a Light Tank and TD
Not sure how you would call a Turretless Light Tank that is supposed to be Air dropped from a Plane with a Parachute.
"You know what? Good. I'm tired of being the bigger man." lol
back many years ago it was the next tank after the AT halftrack and was much lower BR, i came back many years later to try the game and my whole lineup was messed up and spread across 3 tiers
dont know if anyones mentioned it yet, but im really enjoying the little cutaways you do
He has now become the 1 thing he swore to destroy
I recently unlocked the hellcat and that shit is so good. I can go from point to point stupid fast and on smaller maps, you can rush to the enemy spawn and ambush them just as they’re going out,out maneuvering and repositioning, the enemy is so easy, if only it had a stabilizerthis, thing is the bread and butter of the American 5.7 tech tree I can’t believe they even Nerf this thing it’s so good
now that you mention it, i remember hull break ... it was weird but funny sometimes but frustrating
I loved the sound effects at 6:10 - hilarious!

I like the fun facts about the tank. You should add that more to videos. Made me smile and I learned something.
