A lot of people consider this the best Craig film, if not the best of all the Bond films. My personal fave is still Casino Royale, but there's no denying this movie is amazing. Javier Bardem absolutely crushed it!
Side note: A fan fact about this film. During filming Daniel Craig went out and bought a pair of gloves he thought would look cool for Bond to wear during the scene with the Komodo dragon, but during post-production the producers realized that Bond wouldn't be able to use his palm print handgun if he was wearing gloves, so they had to paint the gloves out in post and give Bond CGI hands. It's pretty amazing that you can't really tell 😂

@@Non_Descript_Individual That was a nicely analyzed synopsis. Very well put. I particularly liked the assertions about how his upbringing and career warp his internal view of the world. Which in turn manifests in things like being an amoral womanizer.
I particularly enjoy that last point, because up until now I've found great humor in the meta-commentary that this character is simply a handsome sociopath incapable of seeing people (woman or otherwise) as anything other than objects to be used and discarded. An uncharitable interpretation and in truth it's just Hollywood being Hollywood. Filming beautiful people get it on because it's enjoyable to watch. But in the film universe, yeah this bloke seems entirely untethered from the human condition. Your theory offers it some pathos though and makes it less absurd.
      *Spoilers*
I do get a kick out of one of the later films where he is literally subjected to invasive brain surgery rendering him incapable of recognizing human faces. Lol he very literally can't recognize people (i.e. the dames he smashes and dashes on) as real people capable of connecting with. Mind you, the film seems ambiguous like "Eh... Nah, he's probably gonna walk it off. He'll be fine." But as an explanation for his errant behavior, that's too good. That was a cheeky wink and nod from the film crew.

Yeah. I prefer the 'derring-do' mix of light touch and sternness (and infiltration) of the Timothy Dalton ones most, but Casino Royal is potent and Skyfall felt full of good things without being bloated. I like the consistency of Skyfall's theme, with Bond's oldschool methods matching the low-tech answer to the baddies.

It’s completely understandable that these could be difficult to get into. Bond is a killer that’s why Craig, Dalton (and mostly in For Your Eyes Only Roger Moore too) really captured Fleming’s idea of the cold, damaged character.

Yes - this Aston Martin DB5 is THE Bond car. Was originally used in Goldfinger and then a few other films (see comments below!). Most Bond films have different cars though, but this one made Bond synonymous with Aston Martins and this one is arguably the most famous car in cinematic history. Goldfinger is definitely worth watching btw.

It’s really interesting to hear you say that this Bond version appears cold to you because it’s the first Bond that made me care about the person. I love the old movies and I’m sure that watching the older ones first makes a lot of the jokes, commentary and going against the expected much more obvious in Craig’s movies. But while I enjoyed the other Bonds, they were purely part of the movie. It was all about suaveness, spying, cars, coolness, winning the girl/the price/the mission. I never cared about the actual person because they wrote him unattainable and somewhat invincible. This Bond made me feel, made me empathize with his struggles. Maybe it worked for me because I knew so much about him already or because I payed more attention to the changes they made here, I don’t know.

Addie really needs to dial back into Bond's film history so she can get more of the references (like the Aston Martin DB5... then the DB9...) It's not that they're necessarily 'good' or awful, but they are important in the fabric of Bond. And there are countless films that reference, spoof or rip off Bond to varying effects (like James Coburn's FLINT two-some, or perhaps his far better THE PRESIDENT'S ANALYST). If Addie considers the Roger Moore films, please consider the first two because there is a continuation gag that runs from LIVE & LET DIE into MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN.

The story I heard, as I understand it, is that there was a version of this script that included all the previous Bond actors still living. It would have been revealed that "James Bond OO7" is a code name or title held by many different individuals, which would have explained why there have been so many different versions of Bond. In the third act, all the James Bonds would have come together to battle the villain.
I understand why it didn't get made, and it probably would have ruined the mystique of the series, but it would have been cool to see Connery, Moore, Lazenby, Dalton, and Brosnan in the same scene.

Eve Moneypenny has been in every Bond film. Played by a number of different actresses, of course. The playful banter between Bond and Moneypenny was a hallmark of all the films.

This is a good one though. Yes the DC bonds do go darker. You should check some of the Dalton, Moore, and Connery bonds.

So Addie, you know by now you started with one of the least loved of 25(!) Bond movies, which means ANY one you pick after now should be an improvement. Skyfall was hugely popular, but in many ways different from the expected experience you get from a Bond movie. They are all entertaining, some of them massively so, so take some of the recommendations and try some from different eras.

This is by far the closest to the original Bond's of the Craig films so I think you'll really enjoy them. My dad being a huge Bond fan since he was a kid almost cried when the DB5 got blown up lol. The gadgets and cars with gadgets are a huge staple of the Bond franchise which they downplayed for the Craig films to ground it more.

Heyyy, it's Billy and I was wondering what note you hit at 5:35 ... jk (don't block me)
Seeing Bond physically limited was unique at this point. A healthier Bond, we never doubted his skills. It made us scared for him.
Is there anything scarier than a villain who wants to be captured? Even designed things to be captured? Shades of Loki
Skyfall (the building) is an amazing setting for a horror movie!! Sorry, I got sidetracked by the setup just like you got sidetracked by all the crazy blue eyes.
Looking forward to your continuing journey with 007.
Take care, Addie!! Say hi to Ollie for us!!

As much as I do enjoy Daniel Craig as James Bond (most of the time), I'd still recommend Timothy Dalton or Pierce Brosnan for their more "Fun Bond" movies. Especially Brosnan, because his movies are when Judi Dench was first introduced as "M."

31:00 Maybe the under reaction of the century; "..but this is looking good" as ex-SAS Mallory immediately gets in the fight, first to react leaping over the desk to literally save M's life in a moment of astonishing singular bravery, gets shot and still teams with ex-SBS Bond to fire back and kills a baddie. British Special Forces veterans fighting side by side with Moneypenny defending the head of UK Intelligence. It might be the best Bond scene ever made. Absolute hero set piece to match any. What does a man have to do??!?!?!?!!

Since Goldeneye the whole Bond-Franchise should change to a more modern concept. One point was to introduce Judi Dench as the first female M. Also Bond himself should show more emotions and the Bond Girls should be stronger. But I think all these changes are not in the sense of the Books from Ian Fleming (Originally Bond drinks much Vodka Martini, smokes and is a Playboy). From my point of view it is good that they introduced with Mallory/Ralph Fienes a male M again.

If you liked Javier Bardem here and you haven't seen No Country For Old Men, I'd highly recommend it! He plays another psychopath in that.
Kind of sad fact. Judi Dench had been struggling from a pathology that slowly makes her lose her vision. She was struggling during this movie even.. And I think that is one big reason she decided to have her M's life ended here. :(

Funny that Judi Dench played M in so many Bind movies. She was the best M. Only person in more Bond movies is Desmond Llewelyn as the original Q. I don’t know why I don’t enjoy Skyfall. It’s a decent movie, but I don’t consider it the best Craig movies. Then again, I consider Spectre the second best Bond movie, and that’s the one most people hate. 😂

Personally Casino Royale was my favourite but friends have said they Preferred Skyfall because it had a simpler plot, apparantly.
I think Craig and Timothy Dalton were closer to what Ian Fleming had in mind when he wrote the books.

Say hello to Ralph Fiennes who is the new M, I too thought at first that he was a bit of a hard-ass where Bond was concerned but if you think about it in its entirety he's was just doing his job.
And as the movie went on we could see that Mallory is actually a pretty decent guy.
I think that Ralph Fiennes is a very good replacement for Judi Dench as M.

  • @neilburns8869

James Bond was still alive, and he did return because he knew that they were in trouble but at the moment he is doing "the tests" but unfortunately deep down he couldn't really give a Castlemaine XXXX and M knows it, and she knows that it was largely her fault.
