I love the battle academy as it taught our whole family how to play, the problem with the one unboxed specifically is that it has many D and E series cards which are now "out of format" meaning you can't go into a tournament and try to play with those cards. While it's unlikely you might want to go to a tournament with a premade deck like this, it's just something to consider. With special sales it can be an affordable way to learn (and a gateway into a very expensive hobby lol) I think target has 20% off all TCG stuff last week. There should be a new format legal edition of this coming out, or already on shelves. You can tell based on which pokemon are on the box - Cinderace is from the Galar region which is the series before Scarlet and Violet. The new set has The charcadet evolution (I forget which one) since charcadet is a new SV pokemon.

For me it turned out to be a great intro set for my daughters but nothing beyond that.

Hi. I have two questions. Does combat academy get boring quickly? And is it worth it if I have never played pokemon tcg before, but have played many other card games including MTG?

My daughters play it pretty frequently but I did get bored of it. It does not take long before they want to buy more cards and make more custom decks. But for the money if you want to try out Pokemon ccg it is worth it.

@@TabletopGamingGuild thank you for the response. Wouldn't be better to start with some battle deck anyway?

You can and that is a fine way to get into the game. The board game comes with some nice pre balanced decks but nothing is necessary

@@177silasIf nobody in your family knows how to play and you want step by step explanation, the battle academy is great! Soon after we got into playing I would spend time mixing the cards around to try and balance the decks out (the dark deck is much weaker than lightning and electric) and yeah, you'll inevitably buy more cards. Watch for sales like Prime Day and Black Friday - I always calculate the cost of things like Elite Trainer Boxes and other multi-pack sets "per pack". The standard price for a single pack is around $5. If you can calculate the pack price to less than $4, that's a decent discount. I think the lowest I've seen is around $2.50. best buy has great sales if you're willing to wait!

OH and another great way to get into the game is the pokemon TCG live app - much more affordable way to play! (And if you're like me and your family soon gets tired of constantly being challenged to battle, you can get your fix this way!)
