- In this episode, we unbox and test out the Gripcon Gen2 from Nexigo, a grip case designed for the Nintendo Switch and Switch OLED.
One of the most appealing features of the Nintendo Switch is its dual personality. You have both a home console and a portable all-in-one. Many people, myself included, aren't the biggest fans of playing the Switch in handheld mode due to the stock Joy-Cons. Nexigo has long been making accessories for the Nintendo Switch and has in the past released a grip similar to the Hori Split Pad Pro. They are now upping the game with their new Gripcon, not only designed to give you better ergonomics but better performance with new hall effect sensors on the analog sticks.
The overall design is fairly simple. Larger control sticks on the left and the right-hand side of the unit are joined by a central back. You slide your Switch or Switch OLED down into the rails and your system should connect. I say should because while it worked perfectly for my Switch OLED I could never get my original Switch to connect. I'm reaching out to Nexigo to try to get an answer to this issue.
One of the improvements they have made on this versus their previous generation grips is the inclusion of LED RGB lighting around the analog sticks and the buttons. There are a number of different display modes you can cycle through and a number of different colors. I don't know why but I always like the rainbow color and the breathing where the lights fade in and out. I just think they look neat.
The key improvement on the Gripcon versus other grips out there is the inclusion of hall effect sensors. The stock Joy-Cons use potentiometers to measure the travel and distance of the left and right analog stick. These are inexpensive to produce but because it's a mechanical part it can wear out over time and fail. This is specifically what causes joint. And I don't care what people say on the internet, electronic component cleaners will not repair a broken connection. Hall effect sensors replace this entire mechanism with something that is more robust and resilient, it's also more precise.
As I mentioned, you can insert both the Switch and the Switch OLED into the Gripcon. There are no extra spacers included to use with the Switch so that may have a slight wobble to it side to side, but it's minor. The rubberized back of the Gripcon holds the Switch in place using friction, and a holds it fairly well. The one thing that I found extremely puzzling is the fact that it would connect wirelessly to my Switch OLED while trying to pair to my Switch. I deleted all of my controllers and hit what I thought was a reset button on the Gripcon, but no matter what I could not get it to unpair from my Switch OLED so that I could pair it to my Switch.
Testing what extremely smoothly, minus the issue of connecting it to my original Switch from the OLED. The D-pad felt Good, and in my testing, I could pull off all the moves in Street Fighter using either the analog stick or the D-pad. Both the left and right sticks felt precise without feeling overly sensitive around the center, an issue some controllers have. I was also pleased to see the gyroscopic controls worked properly, as Kirby Tilt and Tumble was perfect. If I wanted to charge through the Gripcon while playing I could via the integrated USB-C port on the bottom.
Why it RoX:
- Hall effect sensor joysticks
- RGB LED lights
- Works with gyro controls
- Reasonably priced
- I don't know how but it worked wirelessly
What could be improved:
- Could not unpair from my Switch OLED
- Still a bit thick for my tastes
- No changeable thumbsticks
- Lacks Amiibo support
Should you buy one?
Even with something like this, I am not the biggest fan of the Switch and handheld mode, call it old man syndrome but for me, the screen needs to be a little bit bigger. That being said this is a very comfortable way to play, the sticks are very accurate, the button presses just work, and this is probably the finest grip case that they have ever produced. I would say it is virtually identical in performance to the NS32 controller that I just recently tested and also really like. If grip cases are your thing, this should be one of the first ones that you look at. When you add in the optional carry case, you have a complete package to play, carry, and protect your Switch.

Recently bought one of these to go with my new Switch OLED. The perfect grip controller in my opinion. Loved the NS32 so much that I had to give this a try. I was not disappointed.
The NS32 has pretty much become my go-to controller in my living room.
hi, i recently got mine and its been working for a while, but then it stops working wihtout it being plugged in, i think its my switch port, what should i do? without it being plugged in, it start flashing and blinking colors without button input. please help!
would you ever consider doing a comparison and showdown video of both gens of nexigo gripcons as well as the other gripcon style controllers you've reviewed? I'm in the market for one and just not sure the best value atm
I still have an older version and a recent eggshell version I got earlier this year.. Funny enough my bro got me white and black dobe version and a carrying case that he didn't realize came with a controller. They are not gen 2 but still enjoy it. I did try to get this version of your reviewing earlier before but every time I tried to get these they wouldn't slide in unless I angled the port in the controller every time which got annoying. 3 times tried but i sent this back and stuck with the two i have. Now i got four controllers, so now i got plenty back up controllers for handheld mode
Did you try holding the Home button on the controller when using the normal switch? It makes sense it would unpair and repair instantly since it's connected to the OLED. But if you connect the OG Switch the unit still gets power so holding home should unpair it and then instantly pair it to the OG model. At least in theory.
It can connect to android right the controller? Cause its type c
Thanks. Amen.❤❤.
Can you use amiibos with this grip?
I'm perplexed by their model offerings. They have the $65. model and the $50. Version.
On their website, it shows the higher priced model (without the RGB lights and galaxy color pattern) as having hall effect analog sticks, but not the LED, galaxy pattern version.
I have the $65. Version and it works great!
These are identical to the "KS42 Joypad" (a.k.a. Nyxi Hyperion) but with a paddle.
Interesting that you say that because I have a set of those that I need to unbox and test out this weekend as well!
How is it holding up
video output usb port?
Any update about the bluetooth connectivity? Does the hall effect version also has bluetooth?
Bluetooth is built into the Switch
Just got mine and I quite like it so far. Did you ever hear back about the unit not connecting with your standard Switch? Mine does definitely only work via USB.
I did not
So can this device be used for the regular switch??
Yes
I notice this thing doesn’t have a place cut out for the original switch to breath. I saw the back has no cut out. So I’m gonna skip this.
yes it does
@@keithbribac oh I didn’t really see it but I’ll take your word for it thanks
@@graymatter9431 you can see near the usb c that the felt pads are cut out. This is for air to vent to the bottom.
Correct
It looks like you may be right, or at the very least it won't have very good airflow as it has material there: 4:44
why would you try docking it when the grip itself is plugged into the USBC connector already
Some cases like this have USB C pass through do you can charge while it's in the grip so you're not constantly installing and removing it
Yep buying this on payday my nephew destroyed my joycons in any game your character does 100 360's a second the drift is so bad games are unplayable for me somehow he can still play comfortably and i do not know how and hopefully the gripcon will be as permanent solution or just put the old joycons back on when he plays with it and replace my screen protector because he cracked the one on it
Pretty dope grips. I have a question have you ever copied your roms and installed it to a fpga mister
I don't own a Mster so no
@@RoXolid ok thanks for the reply because I recently bought one and I had some questions however, did you contact the company to resolve the problem with the switch grips and pair it up to the other switch
im pretty sure no one expected to fit in the dock lol but thanks for trying man 🤣
Hard to say, I agree with you from a common sense standpoint but if I wouldn't have shown it I'm sure someone would have asked
@@RoXolid You are for sure getting more questions/ interactions for trying, although long term likely significantly less subs or likes. I stopped the video after I saw that and came straight to the comment section. Wouldn't really trust anything I heard in a video where someone tries something like that and its not an obvious joke or to make a point.
@mikerobinson7582 sometimes the obvious points just need to be made
are these confirmed to have hall effect joysticks? Can't find anything that states it has it?
Confirmed, it's even in the description on Amazon
@@RoXolidwhat are you talking about, nexigo’s website doesn’t claim this,
I don’t know if you e heard of this one it’s the CXY CHYUHSIN. It’s a switch controller and I have it and it’s great. I got the gen 3 Nexigo but I prefer that one better. Don’t know why no ones talks about it.
Never heard of it, I'll have to investigate
@@RoXolid please do. Probably the most underrated controller
Hello, you helped me ones by also demonstrating is the best Nintendo Wii upscaler on your channel and I thank you for that, I’ve come across a product that I am very curious about Mini Docking Station for Nintendo Switch it’s called nothing els it comes in red or blue just like the same color of the joy cons for the Nintendo switch neon red and neon blue. this item claims it can output 4K 1080 P and more. Is it possible that you can view this item and also the item is 18.99 20.00 dollars!!!
Can you email me a link?
Ok, I saw the email and I hate when companies do this. So yes, this hub outputs 4k... IF there's a 4k signal coming into it. It doesn't do any updating, these can also be used with tablets and phones which can output 4k via USB C
Thank you very much for your help and informing me. This device just interested me and I just want to know from someone who would know more.
@@danielcervera8010 Of course, glad I could help!!
Should have gotten yourself a satisfye zen pro ronin grip, then you’d be able to still dock it with it on.
I don't like the Satisfye ergonomics. My wife has one and loves it for the Switch Lite, I'm not a fan.
With the Satisfye you're still stuck with teeny tictac buttons and two measley small thumbsticks.
@@liquid79 with the Satisfye, yes
Why buy OLED if u don't like handheld mode...
Mostly for review in the channel
Retroflag > Nexigo
In some ways, and others not. They're both decent companies making good products
