When you "slip through a protective barrier" onto the course [of the "running of the bulls"] you have changed from "a spectator" into a "participant."

In the ‘90s I ran the bulls a good few times in Pamplona and San Sebastian de los Reyes. Once, I arrived very late (half drunk at 08.00am) and had to crawl in from the spectator side under the timber planking barrier. A Guardia Civil policeman tried to stop me, first shouting then lashing me several times on the back with his truncheon/baton. I got through regardless but with some nice bruises to show for it. Only time Ive been injured by a nice man trying to save my life!

I live near Niagara Falls, and though there are also a lot of suicides (not filmed thankfully), there are also accidental deaths from people insisting on sitting on the railings taking photos overlooking the Falls. And then...woops. I have seen people do this right beside the frequently posted signs saying don't climb or sit on the railings, but no. The rules don't apply to them. I have seen them put their children on the railings for a shot. And if any of us residents say, "Hey, the sign says..." We get told to F-off. So now we read in the paper that so-and-so dropped into the drink while up on the railing and we just roll our eyes and mentally dismiss them as fools. I tell you, the folks in the Falls have no sympathy for these people.

in 2011 I was visiting Niagara Falls on Canadian side when a lady tried to take a selfie on the railing while holding an umbrella.... it was raining and windy, so it was more wet and slippery than usual.... I wasn't close to see the fall, only emergency vehicles later.
Her body was never found, probably still tumbling under the falls.

I remember visiting some of the waterfalls in Yellowstone when I was young, and there's a photograph of my mom keeping my brother away from the edge by holding on to him by dear life. He was 9 at the time so he wasn't wandering as you may see a toddler, but if you ask my Mom about it, she just said he had a dangerous look in his eye. It's insane to me that people would actually be willing to put their children in danger for a picture.

@@englishmadcow7461 I'm sorry you went thru that. Was it a river/lake or smth like that he fell in, not a pool? Sometimes it's smth else besides drowning that causes the drowning. One of my cousins dove into a lake years back thinking it would be deeper and hit his head, and that's what caused him to drown even though he was a full grown man who should have been able to swim. Regardless it's a tragedy and teaching kids the basics of swimming should be common. But some kinds of bodies of water are just too dangerous to be swimming/diving in.

Sorry to hear about your cousin. Somewhat related - there’s a lovely woman here on YT with her own channel, named Eirin Cecilie Gjedrem, and she does vlogs of her life as a quadriplegic. How did she become permanently paralyzed? Exact same type of accident as your cousin. She was just a young teenager and dove into a lake, but dove straight into a rock with her head. 😢 Luckily she wasn’t alone, so she didn’t drown, but easily would have if that wasn’t the case.
She’s quite the fighter and has such a good spirit - a very inspiring woman.. There have been times were she can’t be in her wheelchair for months on end because she developed a pressure sore on her bottom and has to let it heal, so she’s on her side in bed 24/7 and her husband helps flip her sides every so often so she won’t get further pressure sores.

As we were going up, the guides warned us, "Hey, last week, a woman died in one of these geysers. She was taking a selfie..." The story he told us was exactly as it was stated here. Obviously, we were all cautious around the geysers that day. That story has always haunted me. I didn't know that had been widely circulated.

For those who are curious, it wasn't about who got hurt or not, but about who deliberately got in front of a bull and who touched one. Those were usually the tourists. The locals would always run at either side or behind, and many of them would lead the bulls away from spectators. Tourists would usually seek the thrill of it instead.

Not long before, a man and woman had tried to take a selfie and both walked backwards off the cliff (they had gone past the railing for a better view). Their camera and tripod were sitting there for a while before it was noticed. If you’ve ever been to Glacier Point, you know how freakishly tall that cliff is. The word selfie definitely wasn't in common use in 2002. It was first recorded, like you said. But it wasn't commonly used until much much later like 2009-2010. Trust me, I'm 37. I lived through the entire myspace era in highschool and we never uttered the word selfie. It wasn't until I graduated college and everyone switched to Facebook and Instagram that I heard "selfie". Before that we took what we called "mirror pics" which was when you took your picture via the mirror since front facing cameras also weren't common until the 2010s. The path was thronged with people taking photos (myself included) and most of us stayed behind the rope because we’re not idiots. However, there were still young men hopping over the barrier onto the very narrow bit of path that was clearly eroding, just so they could get a photo from a slightly different angle (while also getting in the way of the views of those of us who stayed behind the barrier. One fella very nearly fell into the waterfall at least twice (you’d think he’d learn after the first near-death moment). Many of us were trying to warn them, but they ignored us, and in the end I had to walk further down the path to get away from it because I didn’t want to see someone plunge to their death.

Also, I vaguely remember a fatal selfie accident that happen back in 2008-2009. A guy was driving down the iconic and scenic PCH (Pacific Coast Highway), which runs all the way down the Coast of California. Popular for its beautiful landscapes of the Pacific Northwest, stretching along a road full of twist and narrow corners along sheer cliffs that drop off hundreds of feet to the ocean on one side, and most of the time a sheer cliff wall on your other. So, the guy was taking a selfi, with his dog, in his car, wIth the top down, while driving down the PCH. As he posted it to Facebook, he wasn't payin attention to the road, lost control of his car, went full speed through a guardrail, and right off a cliff. Unfortunately he did not survive, but ironically the dog actually did make it out alive. I even remember seeing the selfi on the guy's Facebook page with all these sincere RIP comments from people mourning his passing.
That is actually how my coworker first read about this guy's selfie accident. It was through mutual FB friends posting about the tragic loss, where it caught my coworker's interest to investigate further, who in turn told and showed it to me at work that same day. So much of our society and accomplishments have been built upon by people with that type of spirit. People willing to go beyond the average expectations, and do something extraordinary. Whenever you do something like that, there's going to be risks involved. Unfortunately in his case, it caught up to him.

There was one near me. There's a small mountain/large hill you can climb that's quite well known. However, the plateau at the top is quite small and the side that has the best views sits atop huge rock face, popular with abseilers. Lo and behold, she tried to pose for a selfie on that side and kept walking backwards to get in as much scenery as possible...

I remember a couple standing on the ledge in the Grand Canyon to have their engagement picture taken. They wanted to be closer to the edge and therefore both took a step backwards without looking and both fell off to their deaths. 😢

There are at least 2 or 3 instances of someone or a group of people taking a selfie on a railroad track with a train approaching them with no way to escape or getting out of the way.

Three bored teenage girls did that in Colorado. Took selfies of the train passing close behind them, but didn't notice the 2nd train coming the other direction until it was too late! Vaguely remember one girl having survived but only after multiple amputations & surgeries!

There was the one guy taking video of himself standing next to the tracks with a train in the background. The brakeman was standing on the locomotive and kicked him in the head to get him out of the way as the train came by.

We did a video many years ago where we wanted to do a scene in the style for the old silent film villain tying people to railway tracks thing...
We intentionally went out to a line that has only a few trains per year, picked a rather straight, open part of the track (several kilometres visibility each way), and still had 3 or 4 people uninvolved with the filming to keep a lookout for any trains.

I think there's an element of people in the modern world being so insulated from danger that they underestimate real danger when encountering it.

This is truly fascinating horror. The emotional need to take a selfie exceeds the survival instinct. And common sense!

When Shiey climbs places and lets go hands to film himself on top.. I always worry a bit. This video reminds me why I wouldn't risk it like that..
