To clear things up, the whispered one and orthax (the demon) are two different things. Percy subconsciously made a deal with orthax in his thirst for revenge. The whispered one is a necrotic entity that delilah summoned

While Orthax is in control he doesn't need to reload.

They weren't trying to kill the Sun Tree -- they needed it to channel the magical energy they were going to conjure up during the ritual, as you saw in the last episode. You can't kill the Sun Tree; it was planted by the Dawnfather over 1000 years ago, and will stand as long as there's ground for it to stand on. Kiki actually talked to it during the original game -- it talked like a stoned surfer.
Fortunately for you, you can start S2; then you will most likely have a short wait for S3 when it drops in October. Those of us who saw it when it came out have been waiting more than a year!

@6:50 Percy shoots left handed and needs to reload. Orthax shoots right handed and never needs to reload.
This is why Percy forcing the shot into his left hand was such a sacrifice. Orthax feeds on revenge and Percy basically sacrificed his ability to enact revenge.

12:28 The Sun Tree wold have been suffering both from the evil magical corruption of the land, and a general lack of sunlight as the Briarwoods kept the city clouded. Blocking out the literal sun so Sylas and other vampire minions could get about, and likely the gaze of the Dawnfather who is supposed to watch over the city.
16:04 Funny that you say that, in the game Keyleth went right up to touch the orb and very nearly got sucked in.
