I bought this cute bag 10 years ago, the guy said it was leather and I knew it wasn’t but wondered why he said it was. Wore it out last night and was so embarrassed when it started to just CRUMBLE, I went from looking fancy to very sad lol. Looked down at my 5 year old heels and they were also peeling. Woke up this morning to educate myself on what it is that I bought and why it was being promoted as leather. Now I need to decide whether I will never buy this type again and what to look out for.

My main concern would be if bonded leather offers any physical advantages over 100% imitation leather (other than feel and look), particularly concerning durability.
bonded leather are more fragile than pu leather. even if they are made of real leather, they wont feel the same as real leather since bonded leather are mixed with all sorts of leather scraps, the surface probably retreated to give a real leather feel. pu leather nowadays is capable of providing similar feel, and there are different levels of pu level at different price point. most bike and car leather seats are made of pu, they are very durable while pu leathers on belts and wallets are less durable due to lower cost. imo if you want durability you lose some leather feel as they need to be thicker. if you want refined feel you lose durability.
😮😮😮😢 I had no idea that it was just the very Top layer. I thought the entire thickness was bonded leather. Wow! Thank you for explaining it. When I buy Bibles I like to buy bonded leather. Man-made materials that are called leather-soft or imitation leather 10 to start disintegrating within about 10 years. Therefore I know bonded leather is better.
I wish I watched this video after 2 sofas later. First, couch had a cool purple color I notice a few months latter it was peeling more and more it was Faux leather when y buy faux leather y get blank.lol. Second, red sectional I bought second it was like new, bonded leather sectional it lasted 5 years before some of the seats started peeling and spliting abit. I found a piece of material in my house and sewed it to fix a coushion and made a few matching pillows so it blends in a bit.
So, why can a bonded leather couch be sold as leather? My husband and i bought what we were told was leather, but after about a year, it started peeling!
Would purposely scratching thicker full/top grain like the bonded instantly reveal a lighter colored backing too? Or would you have to "dig" alot deeper to see the fiber/splits? Especially dark dyed leather, do they reach deeper or are dyes pretty surface level?

ooo that's a good question. I'm not actually sure, i will have to look in to that!
I think my couch is bonded leather - can I fix it?
Would purposely scratching thicker full/top grain like the bonded instantly reveal a lighter colored backing too? Or would you have to "dig" alot deeper to see the fiber/splits? Especially dark dyed leather, do they reach deeper or are dyes pretty surface level?
depends on the manufacturer. expensive ones can use thicker layer of bonded leather.
Is there any way to protect a book cover of bonded leather- any cream or type tape can put on edges to prevent cracking or chipping?
