This is the kind of video I like. No music, just doing stuff.
Pleased to hear it, thanks
one tap and you can mute the music in most videos, wtf you on about

@@randomcomment6351 the sped up sounds of the tools and wood sounds way better than music, I assume that's what his comment was referring to. 😉

As I trained as a carpenter, you do come to realize that marking out correctly is half the job 😅👍
Very true!
No kidding, you really have to get your own method down. The first couple of months I made a lot of cuts that were just like, how the F was that off.
Makes we wanna go sharpen my tools and pencil
Last day in the shop I consistently kept getting better cuts and results with my hand tools like this than anyting
Awesome... But I'd add the slpine in such a way that you wouldn't waste so much material.
Yep, could have got away with shorter length for the spline. It actually came directly from my offcut bin and looked about right, so didn't bother measuring it.
thats what i was wondering lol why not offset it maybe get 2 or 3 out of it

There it is.
I’m glad you did this without power tools it’s really empowering for people learning wood working to know you can do things many different ways with different budgets
That's great to hear! Thanks
I bought a new saw this past week, and the spline jig for my old saw would not fit the new saw. I don’t want to take the time to make a new one and thought I would try it by hand. I found your video and it help tremendously. Of course the first one I cut, I mutilated the box lol. I am sure the other eleven will turn out fine lol. Great and helpful video!😊
Thanks!
Как приятно смотреть работа выполняется вручную нормальными инструментами, а не какими то навороченными приборами- инструментами
When you make it look really good like that and then you make it look really easy it looks like you're showing off...
And those are some really fine skills to be showing off!!!
So glad you showed us that, THANK YOU!

I really saw the contrast, first a video with a hydraulic press that just destroyed things for the only reason that people say: „oMg So SaTisFyIng“ and here something, where someone make something new, is productive! 👏

Also really cool how the finished molds they are using are literally impossible to do how they showed it in this tiny glass

Очень аккуратный мастер, респект.
The trick with the tape when lining up the mitre is brilliant! Definitely going to use that
I can't claim to have invented that trick, but yes, it does work very well!
just a comment so youtube can show me more of these videos

nice miter joint

Idea for this job guys great
i had to do a similar thing recently for a saw horse, the chiseling part was so hard not to make a mistake and go too low and carve out too much timber

The point of the video was to show how to cut the joint using hand tools. Not everyone has machines, and some people just like to use hand tools 👍
Wow. Made that look easy.
Not as easy as it looks, but with a little practice anyone can do it!
Hi 😌👋
Yes…… I like that the emphasis of a good fit falls upon scribing to an existing spline and then simply cutting to the lines. This may be easier for many woodworkers than creating the groove first and then agonizing over cutting splines to exact thickness that fit.
Glad you like it. I find this method works very well. Thanks
Sssss la perfección con los trazos

Hi 👋😊
Very satisfying
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks
Would it be better to create "scratch marks" on the joint and joiner so the glue has more surface area?
It wouldn't hurt, but since it's a tight fit, probably not necessary

I do splines with a home made sled on the table saw. Works well. And fast
Yep, that's how I would do them if not using hand tools.

Okay, I don't do woodwork so I am a bit on the clueless side. What is the purpose? I don't think that really accomplished anything that the initial gluing didn't.
The only reasons I could think of were
1. Increase resistance to shearing force at the corner, but this wouldn't be terribly effective at only the outside edge.
2. To help keep it aligned. But if you glued them before attaching, then it is just left at the alignment of the initial gluing and doesn't actually matter.
3. Provide more surface area for the boards to contact and join, but I feel like after shaving off a decent portion this means just equalizing the contact area.
4. Ascetics. Maybe just for looks?
Again, not a wood worker and I am actually curious what this accomplished.
@Bowsarge the purpose is mainly structural to prevent the miter joint from breaking open. Without the spline "the dark piece of wood" the miter joint just relies on one glue surface alone and is relatively weak. You will be surprised at how much extra strength the spline adds. You will commonly see this type of joint in picture frame corners and jewelry boxes. And as you mentioned, aesthetics is a secondary purpose of adding a spline, since it can look quite nice in a contrasting wood color and add some interest.
@kiwiworkshop Hmm, okay. It just seems like the outside corner is stronger, but the inside corner isn't. Thanks for explaining it.
Beautiful!

Hi ☺️👋
That is a feather joint, a spline joint would go all the way through to the inner part of the joint.
Interesting, I hadn't heard that definition before. I've heard this joint called a spline, feather or even feathered spline. In a woodworking book I have, it's called a spline just as I cut it in this video. Thanks.
Hi 😌👋
you could have got two out that bit! 🤣
It was already an offcut at that size and I had quite a few of them. But yes, if the spline was cut to size, it could have been cut smaller
Makes me wanna save a bunch of time and take a few passes at the router table and call it a day
Yes, you can use router table or spline jig but the purpose of the video was to show how it's done with hand tools
What finish are you using for this video, looks beautiful
Tung oil with citrus thinner. Thanks!

Hi 😌👋
Good work and too much glue is used and it comes out
You should always see some glue squeeze out on woodworking joints. If you don't, you will probably have a "dry joint" that will fail at some stage in the future. I've seen it before. Thanks
Looks good. Hope its not expected to bare weight
This joint is typically used for picture frames for jewelry boxes so not usually load bearing.
There have been tests, the spline actually transforms this from one of the weakest joints to one of the strongest.
Why use the middle part of the accent piece instead of one side to keep a longer piece after cutting?
It was already an offcut and I have heaps more. But good thinking, if you had a purpose for the smaller piece, it could have been cut more efficiently.
Un saluto grande gigante forte!

This good idea, but if u put the stick from the inside was more good.
Marking gauge blade is backwards for the for the purpose!
Tank you for whiching
Hey man, I’m new to woodworking and am looking to make my wife a picture frame and don’t have a table saw. This was really helpful. But would you mind educating me on the tools you used? Thanks!
Hi, here is a list of the tools used: wheel marking gauge, marking knife, wood chisels, Japanese pull saw, mechanical pencil. Good luck!
Cleaaan
The coolest thing in this video was the little tool used to scribe the lines. Nice joint though not a fan of the oil or polyurethane finish though. If the spline was the same type of wood that would be different.
It's called a wheel marking gauge and is a great little tool to have. The spline was mainly a different color to help demonstrate the joint. However it can look nice with a contrasting color in the corner of a picture frame, provided the spline is quite narrow and doesn't look too chunky. Thanks.
@@kiwiworkshop still nice work though. Thanks for the tools name.
nice. I made a jig and use the table saw for splines.
Thanks. Yep, a jig for the table saw is another way of cutting splines. Also router table jigs where you have the option of using a dovetail bit for dovetail splines.
ОСТОРОЖНО!!!
От этого видео можно отупеть
looks cool i guess
It does look cool, but the main purpose of the spline joint is to add strength
Okay so, I'm new to carpentry/woodworking stuff like this, but super interested and actively trying to learn and incorporate what I do into any projects I do. When you saw the corner multiple times like in layers and then shave out the thin remaining layers, I wondered if there was an easier, but more importantly, faster way to cut that corner chunk out. Sawing through the whole corner a dozen times seems like it would take a very long time to me, right? Or am I using poor saws and it would be fairly quick? Like how long?
Aside from just using a larger/thicker saw, that is
If using machines, you can use a router bit to remove the material. For this type of joint however, you would need to make a spline jig for a router table. You can also make a spline jig for a table saw. With hand tools, you could also just make two cuts either side then knock out the waste with a chisel. However more effort would be required to remove the waste and also more chance of splitting the wood below the joint. I often make a series of cuts with the handsaw to make the chiseling easier.
We had to do this in woods class and make it look like 1 piece of wood. My teacher said I did the best
Nice, good job
