Exploring the Medieval Metropolis of Vijayanagara with Dr. George Michell and Anirudh Kanisetti

Architectural Historian, Dr. George Michell, also Co-Founder of the Deccan Heritage Foundation (DHF), and Anirudh Kanisetti, author of the acclaimed 'Lords of the Deccan', take a coracle ride down the River Tungabhadra at Hampi, Karnataka, and talk about the historical city of Vijayanagara. The urban fabric of the city that was, the enigmatic alignment of its temples, the hydraulic engineering in the city, and the Vijayanagara Research Project are the main topics of this conversation.

The Hampi of Sangama period was vastly different from the Vijayanagara of Tuluva dynasty.The vaishnava chauvinism and bigotri during K.D.Raya and later period had destroyed the communal harmony of the city and empire that ultimately led to the fall of empire.The Madhwa,Sri Vaishnava Brahmins during the Tultu dynasty period were directly responsible for alienating various local communities.All most all destroyed monuments/temples belong to the vaishnavite shrines.🎉

During our visit to the Virupaksha temple, we saw a really spectacular optical image mimicing the pin hole concept. This enabled folks within the temple to see individuals walking the market street, like a modern day CCTV camera. Could this be the reason for the angle at which the market street is built?
