He was shy...on the Phil Donahue interview from 1980 he talks a bit about that and says he got contact lenses to force himself to make eye contact with people.
Like many performers, he was exceedingly shy about being "just himself". And there was a lot he was concealing from the general public in those early days of fame - things he was concealing from himself, too.
Love the old fashioned sing along at the end. I guess it was an ode to how Elton earned a few bob as a teenager at the local pub. As an Aussie I've always admired the British tradition of the sing along. But I wonder if a modern audience would still be able to do this so spontaneously. Is the tradition still alive? I hope so.
We do for certain songs! If audience participation is encouraged at a gig and it’s a well-known song all the oldies will join in and it gets everyone going. Other tunes that will always start a sing-along include: Mr Brightside (The Killers), Sweet Caroline (Neil Diamond), Don’t Look Back in Anger (Oasis), Living on a Prayer (Bon Jovi), Don’t Stop Believing (Journey) :)
Ha! I love the song he played at the end! So refreshing to see something like that...with the audience and Michael Caine singing along. Well- I think it was requested by Michael. 👍🏻
no they didn't here's a good example i'm reading his book & i think it was 1972 or 1973 he was doing a concert and he said That Tony King used to come on stage dressed in a dress & said i bet you get all the boys. and in the book he goes how with that being said nobody batted an eye. so my point is he was pretty open about it and they didn't give a damn at all for a long time i don't think. than he does that interview a few years that he's bi and go figure and if i recall that did hurt him
@@kaitluvs i haven't picked up the book in awhile but where i left off i think it was right around the time he started using Coke, it's hard to believe the guy was a virgin when he started out
God you can tell he has heard these questions a million Times the way it's rehearsed and everything. He didnt blink once before answering any of the questions. I mean it was good for his brand and the show got a bag from this.
I´m not really sure how it works today...but back in the time, he allready was an ARTIST!!! I really think, some people are born to be artists....So does he!!! That´s All...The end!!!
The shows were recorded in shepherds bush and this show was the mid 70s,? nearly everyone in that audience sang 'maybe its because i'm a londoner' mainly because they all were? wouldn't happen now?
George Michael, Elton John Freddie Mercury and Luther Vandross. All gay, and all my fav singers lol the talent back then was unparalleled now talent is thin on the ground I mean apart from the Weeknd music sucks today!
"I hopefully got two or three years left where I can have a good time." All these years later and he's still kicking it all the same.
Yea little did he know he would still be making music 44 years later
Yeah, but I had two to three years left before his drug habit took its toll on having a real good time. So, he was quite right about it.
What a shy superstar : every time he makes eyes contact he closes his eyes!
I thought the same :)
He’s high af
Its called being drugged up.
He is higher than a hippie that’s why!
Beautiful eyes & eyelashes. Mmmmmmmmm!
Elton is the true meaning of swag and daperness
And pure oozing raw talent
Will cooper, Sartorial Elegance as well as Sartorial Eloquence! My main man since 1973!
He didn’t even realize how great he was. So humble, such a nice man, makes you want to hug him and be his friend...
I totally agree
Elton John is certainly a nice man. Humble? Not so much. Elton knew he was talented and wasn’t shy about it.
He was quite handsome back in the day.
Agree...such a cutie.
Still is!
Read my mind!
He still is handsome.
THANK YOU *drools*
Everytime he goes to make eye contact he closes them haha. If the glasses were not see through it would be like he is actually making the eye contact.
he said he wore glasses a lot because he just couldn’t make eye contact with people as a sort of barrier

Like many performers, he was exceedingly shy about being "just himself". And there was a lot he was concealing from the general public in those early days of fame - things he was concealing from himself, too.
But also I've heard him say that cocaine made him suddenly able to look people in the eyes and converse more easily which is one reason he got hooked.
@@PositivelyPam yes he said that and damn is he right lol.

Doubt this would happen in the modern age.

Maybe it's because I am a Londoner
@@EmilyRolloRocks it's a little bit like karaoke then
They did the same thing at the end of his appearance on Parkinson in Australia in 1982.
So cute omg

My favorite singer Andrzej Zaucha
hes so wholesome, i love hes teeth haha and he always makes me smilee

Sweet Elton! Young and cute- I ❤️ Elton John!!
Accent has changed considerably since then. Eltons gone posh.
Not so much posh as speaking with a mid atlantic accent. Back then he spoke with a southern england one
it’s so weird to hear him saying ‘ Northwood hill hotel’ LIKE I LIVE ON THE SAME ROAD AS HIM SKSNJSSN
Sir Michael Caine??!
Honestly, kind of in love with him. I seem to have an issue with picking the gay ones. I suppose I’ve kind of chosen a lonely life. 😂😂😭
Jillian Jacques we have the same issue 😂
Daniela De Los Santos MY CONDOLENCES 😂
I thought I was one of the few!
Then thank god I’m Pan. I got a chanceeeee
Aww! I’d love to have a gay male friend I’ve never even known any gay men all my life tbh and Yes Elton is very sweet I love him.
That singalong at the end is hilariously random 😂
Hey, aren’t those the glasses that Taron wears in Rocketman which substitutes the white sunglasses that Elton actually wore at the Dodgers Stadium?
They are the same ones !!!
Cool!
One of the most British things I’ve seen
Like a most improbable dream.
Love the Tommy Nutter suit. Elton before the drugs took hold. at that point he was the best selling artist in the world.
Gorgeous!
For some reason in this interview he kinda looks like david cross lol

Patrick Stewart in the audience at 2:08?
What's the song when he enters?
The ending was so english lol
Is that Michael Keaton?
How is Parkinson still alive? He looks like 55+ (not like Kravitz but still)
How is Elton still alive with his life style in the 70s and 80s?

It’s so sad how Elton’s parents treated him. What a horrible and wretched thing for his father to write to him.
I have faith that Elton John is Hot and Gorgeous
Jesus Christ died for you so live for him and live
It’s disgraceful what they’ve done to London these days.
Elton John is very good singer but my favourite singers are Freddie Mercury and Andrzej Zaucha
Andrzej Zaucha had gypsy/black voice/vocal
