Mental Conditioning For Combat by Col Jeff Cooper SURVIVAL MINDSET

  • THE Best Training Video I have seen in 33 years of law enforcement. The late Col Jeff Cooper giving a lecture on mental awareness. Forgive the quality as it is an iSight camera video of a TV screen from a copy of a copy of a 35 year old VHS tape that I have treasured for decades. But it is the content that is amazing and life changing. Others in later years have tried to add colors, such as Black for freezing up, but the original White covers that as mentally unable to respond and is still the simplest and best. 28 minutes that can save your life.

    This video is a testament that was that Cooper was the teacher that all other teachers and instructors should be held to. The part about mental preparedness in relation to making the decision is something that is timeless and needs to be talked about more within the industry. And Cooler could have just as easily been responsible for the quote, “ an elegant weapon in a more civilized time.”

    Back in the 60s when I was in college...a guy went off the deep end and carjacked a couple, then took prisoners in an apartment across the street and a half block down from where we took cover in place. Then crusty old Dallas,Texas Sheriff Bill Decker got to the scene...they wasted a few minutes negotiating, then Decker briskly walked past the window where the gunman was hiding...he then quickly stepped right back out into view and immediately emptied his weapon into the hesitating gunman just as Jeff describes @ 27:15 into this video. There was a lot of blood on the carpet.

    Read a lot of Col Jeff Cooper’s stuff back in the 80’s when I first caught the shooting bug.
    I was in my very early 20’s but I knew even back then that there was more to shooting than simply shooting. This man is a damn legend.

    As a black man in America, I live on Red Alert or One Notch Below at all times. And I have not even gotten to that part of the video yet. Attack (physical or verbal) can strike a brotha at any time, from any source.

    • @doughesson
      @doughesson 4 роки тому

      Attack can come at anytime for *anyone* but for verbal you need to walk away & quote another smart man, Massad Ayoob,who said,"If I hadn't been wearing my gun,I'd have punched that wiseass right in the mouth ".
      Legal gun carriers are held to a higher standard b/c we literally carry the ability to kill.
      I hope to God that you never have to shoot another human being but if you ever do, I hope to God that you don't miss.

    17:25 Ladies, this also goes for women who are targeted for trafficking. It's an awful game to play, but it comes down to getting traffickers to think, "Not her, she'll fight against us. Let's get someone else." Keep your head up, be aware of your surroundings, make eye contact with people. You're actually less of a target if you stare people down.

    I read most of his Coopers Corner essays in G&A during the 80's and 90's.. I bought "To Ride, Shoot Straight, and Speak the Truth" in 98, I purchased "Art of the Rifle" in 2000, and as he would upload "Coopers Commentaries" to the internet in the early to mid 2000's I would read those. I never heard his voice until people uploaded these video's and the weird thing is he sounds almost exactly the way I narrated him in my head when I read him. Almost.

      I described "To Ride,Shoot Straight & Speak the Truth" as a philosophy book when I ordered a replacement copy a few years ago.
      I wasn't able to pick it up at the yuppiefied book store but when I could go, I remembered what I'd told the ponytailed manager.
      I went to the Philosophy section & there were two copies.
      I couldn't stop chuckling at the cash register.

    21:23 ....the mental trigger...the trigger is in your mind, but you make up your mind in advance
    25:54 ...I didn't fire because I didn't feel any tension...important point about this degree of mental preparedness
    26:16...the more competence you have and feel with you ability to handle your weapon and your ability to handle a tactical situation the less likely you are to shoot.
    27:10...he says "do this" and you ....beating the drop is simply deliberation and mastery of the problem (the felon expects to be obeyed and he has to wait long enough to find out whether your going to obey him).
    I enjoyed the video.

    on timeline 2:55 adrenaline also makes us shoot sloppy in a emergency, wich is why drills and training help because there will be a measure of fear and adrenaline in all of us, some more and some less, but our mind by default can go back to the training memory tameing adrenaline. the mind has a file cabinet for reference, had you not prepared you would have no files in your cabinet to go off creating confussion when seconds count.

    Great, timeless video. Jeff Cooper is truly one of the best as far as instructors go for defensive training. His principles are simple and effective. He is also great as a person in general and I admire his courage and intelligence as well as his sense of humor. I remember reading in Guns & Ammo back in the 90s an article by Jeff stating something to the effect of "only 2-3 people out of 100 that are killed by gunfire in LA are of any loss to society and it would benefit the country to keep them well stocked with ammo" That's nowhere near his direct quote but that's the essence of it and I will never forget. Satirical and edgy but 100% true, then and now.

    The example he gave about the cop seeing the guy in the window with a carbine, it shocked me when he said " if he moves, the cop should shoot". Nowadays they would shoot the second they saw him. Things have changed a lot in 25 years.

    • @alfredzig2035
      @alfredzig2035 8 років тому +1

      +Shane K ... now, is that really a good think for general public? Do you really feel safer now than you would 25 years ago? Don't you think that "thanks" to the tactical/SOF training the police (as well as civilians) receive on massive scale these days in USA, they're much more trigger happy then those 25 years back?

    • @MitchSnider
      @MitchSnider  8 років тому +2

      +Shane K We do not shoot the second we see someone with a gun. The point Col. Cooper makes is that we are in a mental state to be ready to shoot. It shortens the processing time needed. The trigger to actually fire is if the person with the gun makes a threatening move where we have now already eliminated any delaying reaction time than if we had not been mentally in the mode to react thanks to this type of mental conditioning. I personally encountered many persons with guns on the street and this training helped to be in a heightened state of readiness for those encounters.

    • @MitchSnider
      @MitchSnider  8 років тому +1

      +Alfred Zig Evidence would show if anything less 'trigger happy' because of the litigious nature of current US society. Plenty of examples of officer friendly getting ambushed. I feel I made it through 35 years on the street relatively unscathed to a large degree as a result of this video.

    • @alfredzig2035
      @alfredzig2035 8 років тому

      +Mitch Snider I probably didn't express myself correctly - maybe because English is my FL - and therefore before I get to my answer, I must state that this video is a real jewel and I thank you very much for posting it here for us. I enjoyed every minute of it. I clearly see how it could help you survive your days as an LEO.
      I think, more than anything, this part 24:10 - 25:55 characterizes the lesson it gives us. But, lets be fare - THIS IS NOT how LEO are trained these days in US. They've been too many examples where officers had all the means to be THAT in charge of situation, but the just took a shortcut and simply fired. And fired multiple rounds. Even when the attacker WAS NOT armed with a firearm !!!
      And as for your "evidence would show" - well, the evidence showed, yet the policemen where freed ... and people have started rioting ... and have stopped trusting the police ...

    • @MitchSnider
      @MitchSnider  8 років тому +2

      +Alfred Zig Don't believe everything the main stream media would have you believe (Hands up, don't shoot). As the Director of Training for my Sheriff's Office for over 9 years I know exactly how officers are trained and your examples are dead wrong. This video was shown at every firearms training in the academy I did and as a refresher in-service. If we shot every threat we encountered things would be different but they are not in spite of what the media is trying to sell. No one takes a 'shortcut'. All lives matter, not just the black ones, particularly to those who wear a badge and have made helping others their profession and life's work. You only use deadly force when you perceive that you or another are about to die. Investigated officers were are free or found guilty by a jury, just like everyone else.

    Unpopular opinion: Jeff Cooper would run a Glock with a red dot if he were still around and shooting

    • @MitchSnider
      @MitchSnider  4 роки тому

      The only thing I disagree with you on that statement is that it is an unpopular opinion. Many men his age were die hard wheel gunners. Even in my profession of law enforcement it was not until about 1990 that departments finally started switching over. Of course Col. Cooper was military so the 1911 would have been part of his kit. But he did evaluate other weapons and many modifications were made to the Browning designed 1911. For his time that was the best piece of hardware available. And if you have shot one you know you can't find a sweeter trigger pull, even on a striker fired weapon like the Glock. There is also the concept of pick one gun and get really, really good with it and don't change it for the soup of the day. That was part of his Scout Rifle program concept. It is still easier to conceal carry a single stack 1911 .45 than any double stack 9mm. At least Glock made the mod 21, a .45 double stack, which is what I carried on duty for most of the back half of my career.
