Helping Multiple Boats that Dragged Anchor in Cape May, New Jersey (An anchorage we WON'T FORGET)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 16 вер 2024
- Today in Cape May did not go according to plan. Instead of dinghying and exploring the historic areas we were putting out fires! Not literally though, it was more of helping boats that are dragging and tangled anchors. Hope you enjoy this day showing how anchoring can be a bit of a challenge but all works out in the end!
Thanks for watching!
Cheers from the Loop,
Jennifer and Elliot

ABOUT US
Hi! We are high school sweethearts from Atlanta, Georgia who decided to take a year off to travel around the world. Together we decided to create vlogs for our journey as a fun way to remember it. On September 15, 2019, we left Atlanta with 3 bags, 2 one-way tickets, and 1 goal of traveling for a whole year. Little did we know, 6 months later we would find ourselves in a nationwide lockdown in India. After spending 5 months in India, we came back to the United States and decided to purchase a 34’ Trawler, dive headfirst into boat life, and kick-off America’s Great Loop.
The good, the bad, the ugly - and most importantly, the real and real funny. We’re not here to tell you “how it’s done.”, just how we’ve done it. And that whatever it is that’s calling you - the way you’ll do it is much more attainable than it may seem.
Thank you for following us along our journey!

Jen, you don't have to explain staying on the Pivot. Under any adverse conditions a person should be on watch for safety reasons. That's common sense. Eliot did so well, helping 4 other boats in one morning. Just shows how good of boaters you both are. Jen, don't get so stressed out. You are going to be a wreck before loop is completed. You and Eliot have learned so much since you started and it shows. Be alert but relax a little, the challenges you face is something most all boaters experience on a long adventure. Aloha.
Good seamanship folks!
This is good boat karma, extra points for the two of you!
Thanks y'all, just doing our part!
Glad you were able to help out. You two truly have the hearts of a teacher.
Aww thanks Tyson!
Looks like Elliot caught a lot of sun doing his rescue efforts..
Worth being able to help for sure! Should have definitely put on sun screen though...
You did very well helping your fellow boaters ,and yes Jen you where right to stay with boat
I am so very proud of y’all helping others. Always pay it forward.
Aww thanks Virginia!
Ollie is definitely a superstar
Woot woot 🐶🐶🐶
Great job Eliot! Every cluster needs someone to step up and help sort things out and you were that guy! Cruisers look out for each other.
One thing we've learned coming into boating, is that we are all one community - today was just a little way to do our part!
Can't wait until you start posting again. Miss you !😍
We’re back!!
that's what make a boat community a special community; helping people in distress or people that need an extra hand. Great job!
💯💯💯
You two are amazing and such loyal boaters to help others in need! I’m glad everything worked out for everyone! The pancakes looked yummy! So happy to hear Ollie did her business on Pivot. Keep trawling safely!
🙏 thanks Suzanne! The pancakes were soooo good!
The perfect sea mates and you set a fine example for those that are capable and for those that are not. Thanks!
It is Wonderful that You are Willing and Able to help.
Sometimes we are Willing and are not able to help. You Both are Awesome and Sweet.
Good points! We are just happy to help, there’s no way I could stand by and do nothing… even if I’m just moral support 😁
Ollie did her business on the boat!!! Good girl!!!
Woot woot woot!!!
Miss you guys. Not the best situation going into the next day. We have been involved or helped in all these situations but not all in the same day or in the winds.
Hey Lisa! Hopefully we will see y'all soon 😁
Elliot, you did great! It has always surprised me how few people want to get involved in an emergency. There had to be 20 others in the anchorage yet you were the only one actively assisting. Way to go. Semper Fi!!! Jen, you did exactly what you should have done. Handle your own situation. Then and only then should you assist other boaters. I'm proud of both of you.
Thanks so much Tom!!
Good job. It’s people like you two that the boating community so special.
Thanks Phillip! We are just part of the whole 😁
Another day in paradise! While experience is the best teacher it never seems to come at the best time. You all did well and things worked. Hats off to you all. And you may have found new friends. Enjoy
Right on, Buck!
Great video. Very interesting with lots of excellent boating lessons to think about. In the airline industry we have a concept known as CRM, Crew Resource Management. You both provided a good example of CRM in action. Our first duty is to ensure the safety of our own boat and crew even if it means not rendering assistance to another boat in distress. Thank you for sharing this video and great job in a very difficult and challenging situation.

Last Flight Out
Looking forward to seeing more. You are either in Canada or the dark side of the moon. You inspired my wife and I to take a trip to the C&D canal from our home port near Baltimore. Believe it or not our first trip that far North. So great. Keep the inspiration coming!
That's AWESOME, Thomas, hope you trip was fun!
WOW, what a way to start that particular Sunday off. I am very proud of you for offering your help. Paying it forward is always the right thing to do. What a nail biting video, but so interesting. Now, I cannot wait to see the next one. Yes, Ollie ROCKS....Just love that dog. Take care.
We love Ollie too 🐶🐶🐶 thanks for the comment!
There's nothing like helping another boater in distress. You got that in spades. Good for you!
Thanks Ed!
What a morning! Happy everything turnout good.
Wow, some stressful stuff indeed. Glad you guys sorted all the issues...
The joys of being at the mercy of the weather. 😁
Boat life in a nutshell!
Lesser people wouldn’t have tried to help the others. Good on you guys!
I’d like to think most people would do the same or at least want to help. Sometimes it’s challenging when in a bigger group and every one expects someone else to help
I echo Virginia, helping others brings peace & satisfaction. Karma. I love your endings with bloopers, Ollie, and dance moves! No worries, the Atlantic is not as scary as it seems. (At least, that is what I was thinking when HR elevated!). Cant wait to see you pass Liberty & head North on the Hudson.
Thanks Ann!
My husband and I look forward to your videos. It has been 9 days since your last video and we are starting to get concerned. Hoping all is well with you both, Ollie and Pivot!
Amazing adventure today.
Boy that was a lot of drama for one morning. It’s a darn good thing you two were there, especially Eliot. Do some people just not think. It’s almost like hey I’m here drop the anchor let’s just cause some mayhem. Anyway you are good people lucky for them.
Hehe we are all coming from different levels of experience and so much of it is the day before too. If you don't have a checklist its so easy to lax on some anchoring steps that are crucial especially in "rough" weather like this. Thanks for watching Kevin!
Congratulations! This video show you over 25% through the loop.
We're making progress!!
Good job being a helpful neighbor
Thanks James!
great work holding down the entire anchorage!
Just doing our part!
Good work.
Thanks Greg!
@@SchoandJo I miss all 3 of you guys. I need a video fix!
thanks for helping people out!
Thanks Lester!
One night i heard a mayday from a 45 ft meridian in Bear Creek MD my home port that had run a ground at near top speed after passing on the wrong side of the marker. On board were two very injured women and a man. I was the first one there and carried the three over to a marina where an ambulance was waiting. The coast guard and a tow boat arrived but neither could help because they drew to much water. I ended up taking all the passengers plus the captain to the coast guard boat then went back and helped the tow boat connect lines to the grounded boat so he could pull it off. It took many hours to get that done.
Wow, thats an amazing story, thank you for helping them out!
Trip should be piece of cake. You guys can do it. Already saw experience shining through on this one. I'm ready for your trip from Florida panhandle to Tarpon Springs(?) That's the one everyone plans and plans for. You'll be seasoned even more by then and make it with no worries.
I hope so! Lake Michigan and the Gulf Crossing are the two large bodies of water we will be obsessed with everything weather related!
How far you've come in the last year. No panic. (maybe a little) But don't know how comfortable you'd have been to try to wake someone up from dingy in those conditions before. I'm sure any loopers are glad you're around to help.
Hope Ollie got to pee. She's a trooper
For sure! Every day we learn and grow, somedays like today we get to help!
🙌🙌
Thanks Luke!
Wow, what a crazy way to start your day!!! It's awesome that you both have such giving spirits and were willing to set aside your plans to help others who needed it. Did you ever hear an update on the person who called in the Mayday?
We did get an update and all worked out for them! Thanks for asking!
This is one of the situations we avoided by staying in marinas during windy times. It is a cost but can potentially avoid these kinds of situations. Handling your own boat is one thing. Being subject to the lack of skill and preparedness (would say idiocy but trying to be nice) of other boaters can be avoided...sometimes.
It’s all a trade off but these are some good points! Cheers!
Everyone seems to want to anchor in busy Cape May harbor. A mile or so up the NJICW is a well protected anchorage in Sunset Lake. It can pay to get off the beaten path sometimes!
Good idea! The only thing about Sunset Lake, if I recall correctly, is that it was behind a timed bridge. Most people want to have a bit more freedom of leaving when they can I presume. However that would be better than dragging anchor though!
You helped out great , that takes half a Day for you . But then you got a great reward . I 'll have some pancakes , delicious. We helped out
Some People too they had some rope in there screw in a lock in Holland and we had a u tuber on board Who filmed everything , you can watch this on engel Bos camperaar 2022 114 .
Just checked it out, that was a smooth job helping! Pancakes make anything worth it 😁
I think there's a name for such occurrences when things don't go smoothly in a
gathering that are in close proximity to each other.
Well documented that is a poor anchorage, especially in weather. Sometimes you just need to pay for a slip!
Great job jumping in and helping out all over the place. Any pancakes left?
Pancakes didn't last 2 minutes 😁
Did you here taps and reveille from the Coast Guard boot camp?
We did! It’s always special when we can hear it ☺️
That is what is called anchor watch
hehe right on!
Stay loose Jen...you've done great.
Thanks Larry 🙏
Looks cold . Down here in Fl not so cold
Hehe pretty much the opposite of cold in the Florida summers 😂
Where are you guys currently? Must be getting close to Georgian Bay?
We are in the North Channel and loving it 😁
So where are you guys ❓
Right now we are in Northern Michigan!
It's Tina Walsh again ? I couldn't locate your email address, however I am signed up for your weekly summary I have checked my spam and there was nothing. Have you posted any new blogs since last Thursday. I look forward following you it high lights my week. To see all the sites you encountered .
If I understand the time delay between your recording, and our being able to view, the sun coming up earlier every day, is because that what happens between December 21st, and Jun 21st.
Summer! ☀️☀️☀️
Wow! Can i get a Ummm for the Pancakes?
So many umms the video would have been too long!! 😂
what's the stopping point this year?
most interested in your great lakes travels. grew up in MI.
We are actually traveling into Michigan sometime next week! Our end goal is to cross our wake in Key West late this year or early next 😁
@@SchoandJo good. I wouldn't want you to wait any later. Things can change quick on the great lakes.
@@SchoandJo I did some growing up in South Haven and also had a boat in Muskegon for 10 years.
My plan is to have my First Mate to be able to handle things, if I'm not available.
Good plan... always solid to have a backup plan when the captain is unavailable!
I wish y'all would at least put out a statement as to what is going on, being silent so long. If you can't get a video out now we understand, but a lot of your fans are just concerned and want to know everything is OK. Much support here, whenever we hear back from y'all.
Hey Tammy! Thanks for your support! We did do a community post a little while ago and have been keeping up with our email list. The short of it is we've been in remote Canada with no way to upload videos. However we are back and will be posting today 😁
@@SchoandJo I did finally sign up for your email list, I think, I remember going to Canada one time and had to buy internet service that wasn't that good. The Verizon phone plan we're on now did great up there in 2018, the last time I was in Canada 🇨🇦.
Why no videos?? What is going on???
No internet for the North Channel, sorry Heidi! We are still floating and back on Nebo!
Can I ask a question. Is everything okay. I look forward to watching your blogs. I haven't received any emails either. When do you post ?
Thanks for your concern Christina! We are in the North Channel and the internet is pretty poor so weare unable to upload videos… You should subscribe to our Sunday-summary we send out a weekly email there, our last one came out a few days ago. You can find it here: https//schoandjo.com/sunday-summary
We just checked, It looks like you are on our email list already, did you see our email on 8.14?
@@SchoandJo no
@@christinawalsh7209 can you check your spam to see if it went there? Also you can send us an email contact@schoandjo.com so we can make sure the email is correct 😁
Is everything alright ?? It has been 9 days since you posted...
Jen, you get distressed, because you care.
??
Cape May anchorage is terrible i
It was for sure exciting 😁
Remember: Petting a dog lowers your heart rate.
Hehe this comment is amazing 😁
@@SchoandJo And true. Ever pet your dog and get more stressed out? It's always relaxing. A true win/win deal.
You guys sure get episode vlogs out quickly. BRAVO for helping. It is the right thing, on or off the water. ✨🌊🛥🌞✨
Thanks Richard 🎉
