I must let you all know that this song snuck up on me after we filmed this reaction. I was singing it all week. Now it's in my top 5 Pentatonix songs.

It definitely sneaks up on you. So catchy. 🙂 (And OMG, we were driving to PTX concert in NJ & listening to this and my husband made me and pull up Orinoco Flow and listen to it. )

Kirstie, Scott and Mitch have been friends since they were very young. They started singing together in high school. When Kirstie and Scott went off to collage, Scott found out about the Sing Off and asked Kirstie and Mitch to join him---Mitch missed his high school graduation to go audition. They found out about Avi through Ben Bram and they found Kevin on UA-cam. Kirstie wrote Be My Eyes, I love it.

If you want another original with Kirstie as lead try Water. There is no video but do the PopSpring 2016 performance. It’s 3 originals and evolution of Michael Jackson.

Definitely some "Orinoco Flow" feels coming from this song, especially at the start! Kirstie co-wrote this as well - it came off The Lucky Ones album, one of their most recent albums of original songs. Most of those had the writer singing lead on their own songs. And that album also was more "experimental" than most of their earlier albums, even using instruments (mostly synthesizers) occasionally, but layering was the most common non-standard process they used. BTW, "Coffee In Bed" is another song from that album, with Scott as the main writer (I think Mitch was a co-writer in that one).
In my mind, I always put "Be My Eyes" together with "Love Me When I Don't" - another song co-written by Kirstie, where she sings the lead in the choruses. While the music is very different, the lyrics of both talk about similar subjects - depending on someone else to help you out when you're having problems with your mental health. For songs with such a serious subject, both songs are very upbeat in their melodies.

You usually know that Kirsten wrote a song when she sings the entire song with the boys as backup. The only song she did not write where she sings the entire lead is the great cover of the Calvin Harris/ Florence Welsh song 'Sweet Nothing", one of my all time favorite PTX songs

Glad the song snuck upon you. It’s one of my favorites. And glad you loved the live concert.
Scott, Kirstie and Mitch knew each others from elementary and high school and also did some musical community theater together as kids. Mitch missed his high school graduation while Scott and Kirstie withdrew from college (different colleges) in order to audition for The Sing Off in the spring of 2011. That is when they found they needed five members, so with the help of Ben Bram they found Avi and Kevin and then made it through the auditions and won the entire show which was taped in the spring/summer and broadcast in the fall, I think. The Sing Off will give you good insight into how they evolved together as a group, so I highly encourage you to think about taking that journey. Pentaholics love to watch sing off reactions! The name Pentatonix was Scott’s brain child as that name represents five people and the pentatonic scale. Prior to the sing off, they sang together as simply the trio. I have linked their Lady Gaga rendition of telephone at a high school choir concert below
I’m seeing them on Sept 9th in Phoenix. This will be my first and, likely, only time to see them live. At 73 I’m a granny pentaholic with a deep respect for their raw talent and incredibly hard work ethic. I, myself, produced lots of youth theater productions, and was heavily involved for years with my daughters (2 of them over many years) high school choir, so I have a special place in my heart for how hard these musicians have worked.
Trio sings Telephone 13 years ago in high school. ua-cam.com/video/t2XBMWRK4Mw/v-deo.html
Edit to add the rearrangement of Telephone for all 5 for the Sing Off audition. I know you like to do 2 comparison videos most of the time.

THEY HAVE BEEN FRIENDS ANDE A TRIO SINCE THEY WERE IN MIDDLE SCHOOL, AT THE BEGINNING OF THEIR ADOLESCENCE! SO LOOK HOW FAR THEY'VE COME! They've been together through their adolescence, into the early twenties (when anything is possible, or so it seems) through to where they are now, in their early thirties, well into the decade where you look to find a life partner as most of them have now done.) From now on, they are writing and performing as grown up professional singers, songwriters, and performers. They've been together for twenty years now, and I think there are no more rough edges. They're as smooth as a ________________________________________. (Fill in your favorite simile. Mine? As smooth as a Tennesee whiskey.)

Not sure if you saw the announcement today that Pentatonix's annual holiday album this year will be a greatest hits compilation -- "Pentatonix the Greatest Christmas Hits", but with eight new songs included. And there will be a US tour, "The Most Wonderful Tour of the Year", Nov 14-Dec 21. They'll be in Knoxville December 16.

I think the person that has the toughed job during PTX concerts surely must be their sound engineer! Geezo! 😮
BTW - re: group history... Matt was a huge fan of PTX. He went to a concert & took a selfie of himself with the group! Years later, he was informed that they were doing auditions for a bass to replace Avi temporarily for their next tour. He practiced every bass part in every song they'd ever recorded to prepare for the audition! When he got there & they found out he had a great voice, great personality & already knew the music, they said "sign him up"! 😅 He was then included in their next recording contract and the beat goes on! Sometimes they include a History of PTX mashup in their concerts and they show the selfie Matt took with them on their concert monitors when they get to the point where he joined the group. Really Sweet. 💞

You were almost right on the history. the trio actually met in middle school, about 8th or 9th grade, and sang together from them until they graduated. Well, Scott and Kirsten graduated, and went to college. Then Scott pulled them back together for the show, and Mitch missed his graduation because he was competing. Here they are in High School

Thanks for bringing in the concert performance as well. I've not seen it before and it's very interesting.
Forestella is a group I also adore, with stunning harmonies. They are not quite acapella as they are a male quartet with no margin for a beat boxer etc. So they use instrumentals (brilliantly). But this means they can use their bass differently than Pentatonix does.
Their bass Woo Rim is outstanding, especially given his relatively young age for a bass. I believe he is used more effectively than Avi/Matt were/are and really adds to their performance with a strong knock out factor. Their counter tenor, Huong Ho, is on a par with Mitch, who I have always adored.

Kristy, Mitch and Scott aka "The Trio" have been friends since they were eight years old but started singing together in high school and even before that in theater camp. Actually Mitch never went to college, he missed his high school graduation to go to the sing off audition. Usually the one or ones that write the song are the ones singing it, with Kevin and Avi being the exception sometimes. Good reaction and I like Be My Eyes but it's not my favorite song from that album. Great reaction as always!!

Kirstie wrote the song, and did most of the arranging as well. It’s probably the fourth original song she wrote on her own. It’s one of the best PTX original songs out there. Please stop adding the umlaut to Kirstie’s name, she’s not Scandinavian. She’s part Mexican from Texas.
