Yamaha DX7 IID (made in 1987) differs from the original DX7 (made in 1983) in that you can stack two patches on top of each other and make a performance patch. You can either stereo pan the two sounds left and right or have them both at the center. Here I demonstrate some of the performances that I've created from existing patches. The first performance sound however, was found on the instrument when I bought it. The sound at 1:00 is a sound I recieved, and made a perfomrance patch of, from Paul Mangru here on UA-cam, that I've tweaked a little bit. The sound at 4:01 is a sound I've programmed myself.
Even though the DX7 is digital and excels at the typical FM electric piano sounds and bell sounds, it can sound pretty warm and analogue which you can hear when you listen to the pad sounds in this video. I played the DX7 IID is without any additional effects.

DX7 IID. One of the best 80’s synths!
Don't forget on the DX7 II FD :). I have just bought it today. You made me a litlle bit more proud .
The finest synthesiser ever created: The DX7 IID
Better than the Moog?
Lex Luthor you mean the Minimoog? The Dx7 is more versatile than the minimoog, it can create much more sounds. I can easily create a moog-sounding FAT bass or lead by connecting a dx7 with an external filter (i have this setup)
Moogs are great synths, but the DX7 is (or at least was) more versatile in terms of it's sound creation ability, but I'm sure you know that. Nothing wrong with Moog it just serves a different purpose.
No not natively. You can install the grey matter E! card which enables an arpeggiator, among other features.
@@martinschranz660 also like, you can really easily run an arpeggiator from the computer. I love my DX7ii but i wouldn't ever call it the "greatest synth ever". Maybe it is for you, but to me it's a certain area or palette of sounds, analog synths serve some very different areas.
just flashes of all the 80's movies I grew up on come flooding in while listening to this
The sounds of my childhood, the 80s were such a great era. Awesome Job.

The performance capability of the DX7IId offer much complex sounds than the DX7 first model. It sounds warmer, this synth is really awesome, so much versatile.. FM at his best.
@4:54 just outstanding ornamental chord work, perfectly paired with the timeless EP patch
Thank you!
Excellent demo of the Dx7 II. I have the module version, TX802. I need to load lots of my original patches from my DX7 Mk1 and use it as a sound module for recording with my DX7 Mk 1. By the way, you can create amazing analog pad and string patches with the DX7 Mk 1 without layering ( I have the SuperMAX board installed in my DX7 Mk I but I don't use it). I have a dedicated hardware effector Lexicon MX400, making my DX7 Mk 1 sound magic. Long Live DX7!!!
The classics never die
A legendary, must-have synth ever made.
Using it together with analogue or VA synthesizers makes it sound even better!
You're absolutely right! It's a perfect complement to all my analogue gear. A must-have as you say. It's very inspiring.
Man, this is so wonderful, I listened to it in a loop a couple of hours non-stop. I especially like the 2:35-3:10 fragment.
Thank you! I'm really glad you liked it! About the fragment: it's just some basic chords really...
The beginning of the video at 0:04 I play the chords for "The Final Countdown" and at 7:09 it's "You're the inspiration" otherwise just me improvising.
i also want that part looped
that's amazing man , all do respect I'm so jealous. I have a Yamaha dx100 , but this is like having 4 of my dx100 together at once! great great job on your patch!
Thank you!
Always enjoying the DX7 sound!
3:12 - 4:00 such a lovely pad and chord progression!
Very nice demo, finally a true player and not some sequenced dance junk! Thank you!
I can never get enough of the DX7 and D-50. If not even for the sound, than at least for the looks. I mean, why designers made desirable instruments back then, and today's designers seem to throw tings on front panels at random without any sense of taste?
I have the DX7 IIFD.
THANK YOU so much for sharing the patches and for the awesome demo!
My experience with my DX7II tells me that FX helps a lot to improve DX sound. Beautiful sounds demonstrated here.
Such a pleasing demonstration. 🎶
I know, I used FM7 and even FM8 for a few years before I finally decided I would buy an old DX7. To me there's a huge difference between FM7 and DX7. I find that you can't really get that good old electric piano sound on the FM7. And I find hardware in general to be much more direct and inspirational than soft synths.
Thank you
your patchs are exellents and it work fine with FM8
especially the first one "Ensemble"
I used to have a DX7IIFD and I'm crying back that time. At 3.15 the strings/pad sounds so beautiful!
Thanks! Yes, the DX7II is really good at strings and pads as a matter of fact. Why don't you get a DX7II again if you miss it? The're not that expensive I mean. I found mine on Ebay for about 300 Euro. And IMHO VSTs doesn't come close to a real DX7.
roboticrealm I know. I've just can't rid of this thought since your video. I think I will go for it. I used to have an SY77 too but unfortunately it's really hard to find nowadays any TG77, SY77, SY99 in a relatively good state regarding especially their display.
Gabor Ok. Good luck! I hope you find a DX7II in good condition!
Fantastic patches! Tons of usable stuff there!
Thanks!
Bro,Its amazing!!! Very good patches!
Thanks! Yes, you're absolutely right. I bought a TC Electronic M350 some time after I made this video which I now use all the time with the DX7 IID.
Great playing and great patches! Thanks for sharing them :-)
Thank you!
Thank you very much for the presets !!! It sounds AMAZING!!!
Thank you! Glad you liked them!
Thanks for sharing, I enjoy the patches :-)
5:31 bells sounds awesome
Excelente demo: saludos desde Honduras. Gracias.
Great demo. Thank you for file sharing.
4:55 best song! Love this patch!! Mine came Next month! :)
Nice sounds , thanks for sharing
wonderful sounds!
The lovely DX e-piano simply screams for sus chords.
Thanks for sharing your sysex; these are great!!!
7:08 is my favourite song in this video
Excellent bells
DX7s are wonderful instrument. I got a SY35 a while ago - for about half the money you've got to pay for a DX7. The SY35 has digital and analog waveforms which you can combine (2 or 4 different sounds). You can use a joystick to move between those sounds (like Kawai's K1). The SY35 is absolutely underrated imho.
It's quite similar to the SY22 is it not? Check out my video on that one if you haven't already.
The SY35 seems to be the fancy version of the SY22 (16 bit instead of 12 bit).
is it possible to copy the PATCHS from the DX7II to the DX7S ???
Beautiful mate ! I don't ever remember hearing these sounds on it in the late 80's ?
Thanks! Well, maybe the patches I found on the internet, which I've based my performance patches on, are newer than the ones people created for it during the 80's...I don't know...
The first example and also the moogy type one sound brilliant !
I have a DX7 Mk1 and DX21 I am learning. Would really love a chat some time if you were around (maybe on Skype) ?
monsterjazzlicks The first performance patch was on on the instrument when I bought it and the moogy patch is Paul Mangrus patch that I've only doubled and and done som dual detune on. Mr Mangru is an excellent programmer when it comes to the DX7. Be sure to check out his stuff here on UA-cam.
I don't think I could teach you much about the DX7. It's very hard to program and the only things I'm apparently good at, since people seem to like my video, is to layer two patches on top of each other and make it sound good. With a Mk1 DX7 or a DX21 you can't do that so I probably can't help you there...
Ok man, cheers. I just wanted to chat about a couple of basic fundamental things which are common to all DX's and which are drastically holding me back from getting off the ground here.
monsterjazzlicks One thing I've begun to notice however is that if you take a patch and first check which algorythm it uses, and look at the picture of that algorythm on the synth, the operators at the bottom row are the ones you should begin to edit if you want to change attack, decay, sustain and release. If this is what you want you try and go to these operators in edit mode and change the EG (envelope generator). Which parameter attack, sustain and so forth is, is hard to know, but if you change the values on R1, R2, R3 and so forth you will eventually find attack, sustain etc.
Thank you very much! I'm glad you liked my demo! :-)
FM Synthesis is great once you learn it.
4:01 is it possible to recreate this sound on a reface dx?
Doubtful, I have one, not enough operators or control of them I would think, nothing has come out of mine with that level of complexity in the sound quality.
Legend
The sound at 7:08 is already from the keyboard ? The ones that are not from the keyboard itself once I buy one: the dropbox link you share with sounds I guess, how do u have to do to get them into the DX7 II ?
8:00 best patch
Very close to analog synth sound!
Will this work with NI FM7 or FM8? Or any other emulation of the DX7?
once i used to own one of these m2. best touche i ve ever had. Now i have sy35. It is also ok.
hello, i have a DX7IIFD
yeah the sysex file would be great so that i can load these sounds.... is it easy to load them and how?
If you give me your email adress I can send you the patch.
To load them you need the program DX Manager from fm-alive. Just google it and you'll find it right away. It costs only $20 and is well worth the price if you want to be able to program your DX7 easily and load patches from the internet into your synth.
Of course you need a midi interface and midi cables for your computer, but I asume you already have that.
To get the patches to stay in your synth you press Edit and then 14 and turn memory protect to off on your synth.
jazzmeister@gmail.com
Thanx
Jazz Devil Ok, I've sent you the patches now. Hopefully there wont be any problems.
thanx
Min 7:09 , best sound ever
Sounds good
Super sons de DX7!
I'm upgrading to a DX7 IID so i dual sounds and listen to it in Stereo.
Hi, I just picked one for $75, but it has lost its factory sounds, and has no cartridge. Any chance I could get a copy of your sysex?
You can get the factory sounds on Dave Benson's DX7 Page. Just google it. You can also download great patches from Thiago Gomes here on youtube.
I decided to put the performance patches on my website. So you can download the sysex files from there.
Thanks!!!
These patches are ACE! Where can I find a list of them ?
@Bas Ti I checked The ROM cartridge and it just says on the label that it's a ROM cartridge, nothing more...
Ok,thanks Robotic.......
robótico
Are these the internal memory original performance patches? In your hands they sound awesome ! Thanks !
Thanks! Maybe the first one is as that one was on the synth when I bought it a few years ago. The other performances I've made myself. But you can read all of this in the description of the video.
Do you think it would be worth it to get rid of a DX7 mkI to get a II? I got a mkI because I was young and dumb and now I kick myself for not getting a mkII when they were the same price online haha.
Well, I don't know. Perhaps. It all depends on what you're after and what you like. I have a DX7 mkI at work, and I borrowed it and brought it home at one time to compare the two. The mkI sounds a bit dirtier and "lo-fi" than the mkII. Some people think that the mkI therefore sounds better. To me it's much more important to be able to stack two sounds, which you can only do with a mkII. I also like to be able to use the unison mode, which I think is also only available with mkII. With mkI I think you really need effects to make it sound good. MkII can sound good without that, even though it too really shines if you put on effects.
@@roboticrealm I did end up selling the mki and I got a mkii. Well worth it for the stereo outs, split/layering, and the enhanced midi. A small thing I never really saw people talk about is the ability for multiple LFO's, it seems like that's a big source of subtle change in the mkii.
@@emmarossignol4445 Glad you're happy with your Mk II.
Hi, will these patches also work with my DX7 MKI ?
Regards
Well, not really. Performance patches or dual patches, where you layer two patches on top of each other, like I've done in this video, is not possible with a DX7 MKI. However, the basic single patches is still playable on a MKI. This was the whole reason I bought myself a MKII DX7.
that on start , remind me on Ella - Ella intro ? Nice playing . Some sound are analogy warm or silky digital .
The chords in the beginning are from the song The Final Countdown by Europe. Ella Ella uses similar chords however...
Just check it out , only D is similar . Grove , chord progression , different , at all .
And here I was thinking it was Rescue Rangers
Thank you!
Super nice...How many sounds I can store in DX7 II FD or D? Thanks
64 single patches and 32 performance patches.
nice...i miss that time. just a synth, just playing, not messing around with so overdosed stuff like today.....
Best DX7 IID demo heard so far :-) I really want to get that smooth 'sawtoothpad'sound at 8:00, performance 29. Can you help me with it? Or an idea how it's made/layered? Thanks!
Thank you very much! That's very kind of you to say! I don't have time today to check, but I'll check sometime tomorrow and let you know.
I managed to to check real quick tonight. I'm about to go away in a few minutes so here goes: The sound consists of two patches named *ana.Str. and *Str.ssimo. No Dual detune used. Make sure the pan button is lit. Hope that helps!
roboticrealm Thanks very much! Now i just need to find these patches. It seems that they originally came from the "PA-decoder MONST-ROM" card, which sell on ebay for more than 50euros.
Bob Augustin There are loads and loads of patches for free on the internet for the DX7. Just check Dave Benson's DX7 Page. I think you'll probably find them there. Or check out Thiago Gomes patches here on youtube. He has some really fantastic patches also.
Which name has the voice at 2.20min ???
Thanks Basti.....I have loaded your soundbank
I don't remember sicne I've changed patches on my DX7 over ten times since this video, but as you can see in the video on the display of the synth it's performance nr 9, so it shouldn't be a problem to find it if you have loaded the soundbank.
Thanks! I don't know exactly. I will check when I get home from work. It's some kind of ROM cartridge so it's nothing fancy. Quite boring sounds on it actually. It was included when I bought the synth.
Seems these patches can work only with Windows based DAW. Nothing for Logic?
+Nishant Mudgal How come? It's just sysex files...Here's a thread about sysex programs for Mac: www.gearslutz.com/board/electronic-music-instruments-electronic-music-production/508248-midiox-mac.html
5:20 nice!
Excellent demo, But not impressed as I thought I'd be, maybe because the sounds are dry with no effects. The first patch strings were very thin and weak lacked depth and feeling.I was going to add one to my collection, but I am more impressed with my Kawi K4 that tried to break through the market as an alternative to the Korg M1 and D50. Some of the sounds are good here, but I understand it's very difficult to edit and programme.
The DX7 is really dry on its own. But the sounds are super crisp. Add external Efx to make it shine.
8 People (for some reason) were like "PFFT! I could do better! Duh!"....and then...didn't.....
alguien me puede decir el nombre del patche 16 que suena en el minuto 4:56? gracias de antemano por la instruccion.
Full tines
how can i load the presets on my DX7 IId??
www.dropbox.com/s/nrf5jq83fkxvr1y/DX7%20transmit%20recieve%20sounds.txt?dl=0
Wow! I have never heard the DX sound so fat and rich!! My rig consists of a Prophet '08, Minimoog Voyager, Nord Stage 2, and a Yamaha DX7 II FD. I have become quite good at coaxing fat sounds out of the DX, but I would love to learn more from you. Where are you located? I would love to bring a RAM cartridge and just let you dump your patches onto it. I'd pay you, of course. And then I would analyze them in MidiQuest and learn from you (the master)!!!
Thanks for your kind comments! I am by no means an expert on the DX7 IID. I just experiment with layering sounds and sometimes I get lucky. Almost all the single patches are not mine so I couldn't accept payment for them. It's just the performance patches that are mine. I always like to layer patches to make them sound fatter. If you've visited my homepage (you can see the url in the description of the video) you will see that I'm located in Sweden. I don't share my performance patches anymore since I've got so many requests and don't want everybody to have them as they are part of my sound in my songs. I hope you understand. However, if you are willing to trade really nice performance patches of your own I'll send you the sysex files. By the way I also use MidiQuest (for my other synths) but for the DX7 the program DX Manager is a much better program.
What were performances 9 and 12
I've replaced the sound at 9 so I can't check that at the moment without Midi Quest which I use for storing sounds and performances. 12 is a combination of two patches that I've found somewhere. One is called *BELL < and the other Xylano. The Xylano patch I've modified a little bit. Both the performances 9 and 12 I've made myself. I hope that answers your question somewhat...
Can I use this patches on vst Dexed? Thanks
Not exactly. A performance patch on the DX7 Mk2 (or the TX802) consists of two patches on top of each other. However, if you take the single patches the performance patch is based on, and use two instances of Dexed, and then detune one of them, you can get similar performance patches like you hear in the video. Just download and try it, I guess.
roboticrealm Thanks for the explanation 👍
Como.se llama la muzica de 5mn la que tocas????
What?? Please speak english.
its the "D" for Double which makes him more analog. forget the vanilla dx7! grab a DX7 2 D !!!
I don't know if it makes it more analog sounding, but it sure is a lot more useful since you can layer two sounds on top of each other. And that makes it a lot more interesting than a MK1 DX7. So I agree with you to grab a DX7 Mk2 over a Mk1. When I decided to get a DX7 it was a nobrainer. I had to have a MK2. Some say the Mk1 has a grittier sound but I don't think the difference is that big in that respect.
Think the FD stood for floppy drive.
+Monsterjazzlicks
You can have any patches I have for nothing. I will simply email you the data sheets. I have some koller sounds for the Mk1 DX7. you dont have to layer FM to sound great you add its best friends reverb and chorus and the magic begins.
Great sounds! Can you mail me the sysex? Thanks!
After so many requests of the sysex files I've stopped sending people sounds as I almost never get any patches or anything similar in return. So unless you have useful performance patches yourself that you are willing to trade then I wont send the sysex files. Sorry. Still, if you're after great epiano sounds check out Thiago Gomes youtube videos.
I understand, I'm just looking for a few sounds that I can really use. I recently bought a DX7 II FD for the new band I'm in. We do a lot of 80's songs and a lot of the songs includes a DX7. I'm not familiar how I can make my own sounds, yet. But I will get there, I hope, thanks for the video, I like it a lot! Cheers Henry
FanTC Studio I decided to put the patches on my homepage. That way everyone can have access to them from now on.
Hermoso
S implemente me encantan, asi se hace un demo aunque nombrando los sonidos mejoraria mucho mas
Would these patches work on a dx21?
+WeAreCrozet I'm afraid not since it's a 4 operator synth and the DX7 is a 6 operator synth. So they're not compatible.
computer midi in hardware
The ultimate drug, the synthesizer.
lol
How many sound cartridges are there for the DX7....?
Wuts the first patch
All the patches you show un this video are fantastics, DX7 it's , but the electric piano you play beetwen 7:08 and 7:56 it's the best one for me. So Peter Cetera!! Take me to my fifteen inmediatly in the first chord! You play very nice too. Congrats.
Hi I just have a quick questions If I up load all the patches as per th elink will they override my current sounds and just one quick question how many sounds are there in the available link ?
6:55 This Givew Michael Jackson Gone Too Soon Vibes
5:20 urrgh...sounds like the music you used to get on an American Tv show just before the end credits would roll.....so puke making...so great at the same time
Have you made a video using your POLY 61 KORG yet? That would be an interesting one!
No I haven't. There are quite a lot of good Poly 61 videos already here on youtube and I don't know if I can contribute with something new....but maybe I'll give it a shot when I have the time.
roboticrealm That would be great because I am sure you could come up with something interesting. Like a little tutorial of some of the main parameters. Most people just play stupid chords on it and wiggle the pitch-bend! lol
monsterjazzlicks I've made a little video of the Poly-61 now. No tutorial but a little demo of how it sounds, like all my other videos: ua-cam.com/video/37dCPoCA9J8/v-deo.html
Wonderful FM sounds! I´m trying to recreate these sounds (from 4:55 to 7:55) in my DS-8, but I still don´t find that exactly tone.
At some point, could you please go through the algorithms of some of the patches? I really like the sounds
your patches are pretty legendary man. thanks for sharing!
Thank you for your kind words! Remember, most of them I've just collected and then made dual (performance) patches from, so I can't take much credit for it, but I'm glad you appreciate it.
I recently bought a DX7IIFD. but it didn't come with any Cartridge (a ROM or RAM)?. So I bough a floppy disk with loads of sounds from an Ebayer from France.
Unfortunately I've not been able to correctly load the sounds on to it to be able to hear them and therefore save them for Performance use.
I love some of the patch sounds you have on this video as I'm in a new romantic 80's tribute band.
I don't know what the SYSEX thing is mentioned below as I've only the floppy disk I bought.
Any tips you can offer will be warmly received. I'm not sure, if the 64 sounds currently on the synth are the factory sounds or made by the former owner?
Tony aka Semi-tone
Looks like it could use a cleaning... Some nice sounds, especially the synth strings. I’ve been playing with a TX802. It can stack eight programs. Unfortunately, despite all the DX sounds out on the internet. I can’t seem to find many sounds that aren’t generic FM sounds (most of them sound the same and there’s no complete collection that doesn’t include tons of duplication). I know FM synthesis is more diverse than what it sounds like, but... There also seem to be no 3rd-party performances for the TX802 (you have to include the actual voices for performances to be portable).
Wow , this synth is like the missing link. Never realized a digital synth could sound so warm and pleasant. I really love it’s sound.
Would fit in any mix perfectly
This is so freaking amazing! I just bought this board, can't wait for it to arrive next week... Great demo, really nice patches!
Whoa! I'm really impressed.
I never had my DX7 sound anything like at 06:19 or 07:09.
Would you share a sysex file with those patches?
