  • In this video, we take you on an incredible journey through the Dolomites, comparing the stunning Lago di Braies with the hidden gems of the backcountry. Join us as we explore these breathtaking locations from the comfort of our VW campervan and discover what makes each destination unique.
    Experience with us the beauty of the iconic Lago di Braies with a twist as we experience the lake before, during and after a MONUMENTAL storm hits the mountain range. The changes are quite dramatic and make for some stunning photography that we will never forget.
    We then venture off the beaten path for 48 hours to uncover some of the lesser-known, yet equally stunning, backcountry spots of the Dolomites. Join us as we navigate how to explore the Dolomites without breaking our budget.

    Thank you for taking us on your journey. You have shown us some amazing places and I love watching you on a Sunday morning with a cup of coffee. I really like it that you show some of these places before the crowds arrive. See you in the next one😀

      Thank you - it was really lovely being there early in the morning mist and quite funny getting back to the boat house an hour later when the crowds had arrived - probably the people staying at the hotel. We have decided that the Dolomites in general are one of our new happy places - they were a fabulous place to explore.

      Thank you so much for your lovely comment - we have had a few people that have said the same thing. We had not really thought about our videos in that way - I am glad we can take you virtually to some of the beautiful places that we visit. Yes we chose the name carefully 🤣 hopefully we will be able to have years of retirement wanderlust to come - there are so many places around Europe and the world that we still want to visit 😊 The storm was quite incredible and the amount of damage to the trees the next day was unexpected but not surprising!

Nice little site you stayed on too 😊

      Thanks for this Christine- we try really hard not to let the weather spoil our mood- we cannot change it we just need to get on and do what we can. The crazy weather in this episode was actually really fun and added to the memories we have taken away from this amazing part of the world.

      Cheers - all our photos so far are taken on the iPhone - Richard did have his DSLR but hasn't downloaded any off the memory card yet - hoping that it will have picked up some of the wedding photo's a little more clearly! It was so pretty in the mist and stillness and a beautiful place to visit when the crowds aren't there.

    I just love watching your videos, so much my kind of stuff and love a day or so in a busy place then a good bit of chill with no one but the hills. Don’t think a slightly bigger van will curtail your travels, with your own facilities it will free them up. I’m mostly solo and drive a 6m panel van anywhere you take Nelson and more….

    • @earlyretirementwanderlust
      @earlyretirementwanderlust  10 годин тому

      Thank you - we definitely enjoy the quieter mountain trails to city life - but there are some really pretty touristy places that need to be visited to be appreciated.
      The van we are pretty sure we will go for is a 5.4m Fiat Ducato conversion of some type as the biggest factor is getting parked behind our house and anything bigger won't fit! It will be big enough to have on board facilities and a permanent bed and we have seen a few that we really like. x

    Great light after the storm; it just shows you have to get through the lows to experience the highs and the contrast vastly enhances the experience. We once arrived in the dolomites on the back of a storm and the clarity of the air was absolutely magical and enlivening.

    • @earlyretirementwanderlust
      @earlyretirementwanderlust  7 днів тому

      We absolutely agree- we love a good storm and the sense of anticipation of what follows it amazing. Like you, some of our best images over the years have come off the back of monumental storms.
      As you day, you just need to wait it out and see what happens- preferably from the comfort of a campervan and not a tent😂

    Are you just using the Cicerone guides to find your walks??

    • @earlyretirementwanderlust
      @earlyretirementwanderlust  7 днів тому +2

      Generally yes - but Richard does adapt some of the hikes using the alltrails app - especially if we are starting from a different point. Some of the guides are better than the others but we have used the Dolomites shorts walk, Julian alps guide and an Austrian 101 walks which have all been pretty good. 🥾

    Thank you for sharing your adventures. I deam of early retirement 😊 how do you plan where to walk? I use os map app in the uk is there an equivalent or do you use a book?

    • @earlyretirementwanderlust
      @earlyretirementwanderlust  7 днів тому +1

      Hi- we use then OS maps app in the UK, and use All Trails when overseas- it's not as good as the OS version- but it does cover everywhere we have been and is free. We swear by the Cicerone guides for paper recommendations and the books rarely let us down- there are some fantastic walks highlighted and the difficulty rating is pretty accurate- unfortunately the maps in the books are normally just sketch maps so we combine the books with All Trails.
      Hope that this helps?
