  • Roofing contractors, what do you do when you constantly get requests from a company to figure out repair estimates and roof replacement estimates but never get the job. Then they contact you months later due to leaks when they hired somebody else to do the work?

    "seeing as this is the second time I've had to quote this I will be charging a call out fee, if you decide to go ahead with the re-roof that fee will be discounted off the end price"

    Welcome to my world Brian! People constantly take my quotes and shop around for a lower price. Also, like you in this video, I too have been called back to witness some other roofer/handy man’s crap work; but for some reason these homeowners expect my price to come down the second time around.

    I wonder why they keep asking you to come looking at?
    They need to hire you to replace that thing.
    The welding story is funny!

    Your channel has been a big help! If you're looking for content ideas I'd love to see how you quote a repair. I never know what to charge and usually pass on most repairs that I know I can do but don't want to rip the client (or myself off). Your vids have helped me confidently make repairs in the past but I usually only do real small repairs. I'm on the sales side but I know I'm leaving easy money on the table by not doing minor repairs and building client rapport for future full replacements. Thanks for your work man you're one of the good guys in this industry

    I was reading an article about the eclipse the other day.
    They listed Kokomo, IN under totality cities and I immediately thought of Brian from Grand Roofing. Thanks for the video.

    With all the DIY people your channel could really boom with showing the best practices in installing a roof with all steps. I feel people like you want to do the work because you do it right and don't like seeing resources wasted. There is huge opportunity to to tell people how do things and get paid to inspect their work because most people want to work but don't know how or where to start. Respect to you and yours 👊🏻

    I didn't bill for it, because it was my own roof, but I once "fixed" a roof by getting a 5 gallon pale of... tar I guess? I dunno, I got it from Lowes, meant to patch roofs or something. Anyways, I just got on the roof, I just poured out the contents, and brushed it across about a quarter of the roof with a push broom. It wasn't pretty, but it stopped leaking... for about a year. Despite being a total eye sore, I totally forgot about the leak, and my "fix", until the following year when it started leaking again. Had to replace the roof then, no way around it.

    Oh my gosh that roof looks awful. From a distance it kind of looks like someone lit tiny little fires in spots of the roof. If the people are gonna call you for a repair on a roof that already looks that bad then they might as well have you and your crew fully replace the roof at least then they would have a nice new roof that's installed the right way. As far as the not charging for estimates I think you should stick with the free estimates for first time viewing of a customer's roof but if they called you for and estimate but didn't use you as their roofer and then later on down the road they call you back wanting an estimate on damage repair because of their bad decision to go with the cheap guy then I think you should charge them for coming to look at the roof.

    I do satellite dish installs/removals/repairs. I document EVERYTHING (photos, texts, & notes). I recently had a "customer" call for warranty service. Said my installation was crap. Wanted the problem fixed for free. I did not have his info documented. When I went to the house, I didn't recognize it. Told him & her I was not the one who did this. "oh yes sir, we recognize you." I asked him to show me the business card I give everyone (said he lost it). I asked him to show me the text message conversation from last year. Didn't have it, Said he changed phone #'s. I asked him how he got my phone # (from a friend LOL). I gave him 2 options;
    1. Pay me to do the repair
    2. Or call the guy who did the install.
    He said if I didn't fix the problem for free, he would notify the BBB and blacklist me online LOL. I said good luck with that, and drove away.

    I fully understand your position. Problem is most consumers want to "thrust" there contractor. Trust is not the only thing that makes a good job. The contractor needs to be knowledgeable and trust worthy. Last is profit margin. How much profit is reasonable? I can't even get a contractor, to give a written estimate, let alone any written details. AND they all want money up front.
    Your fighting a losing battle. There's a ton of shady contractors out there these days.
    I work on specialty vehicles. I see hundreds of screwed up things on vehicles all the time.... What can you do?

    Charging for quote estimate should be standard unless it's a return customer.
    Good luck with this customer 👍

    • @calvinreichelderfer4922
      @calvinreichelderfer4922 5 місяців тому +1

      I think free estimates should be standard but if someone wants you to come out to look at another persons repair after you provided your advice and estimate then that shouldn’t be free or expected to be at no cost.
      I as a customer wouldn’t get an estimate for work if I had to pay for the estimate.
      I as a customer also would not expect you to come to my home for free when you already advised me about an issue and I had someone else do a worthless repair.
      I like trades people like you who care about doing the job right.
      You will never run out of work doing things right.

      @@calvinreichelderfer4922 That's a respectable way of doing business as well and it depends on where you do business.
      Either you charge or not for an estimate it matters less if the quality of work is below industry standards.

      Definitely not that. It's a rental that's being managed by a property management company. I'm guessing they turned in my estimate, tacked on a percentage, and sent one of their in house guys. I kindly responded to them to check with who did the job, that maybe they offer a warranty.
