@Leandro Tavares , I never use Auto Pilot... It takes all the fun out of flying... I just follow the line on the GPS, I know what the vector and course heading is for the runway I want, so I try to steer the plane on the course heading... I still adjust left or right all the way down to touchdown...
These are great dude! I'm binge watching your stuff at the minute, much appreciated as someone new to the series! I'm so looking forward to the 2020 edition it looks stunning!
Thank you Jack, made my first landing in FSX today after watching your video, came in a little to quick with some flare but quite chuffed, learning all the time
I definitely need to use this for my approach and landings in an airliner because I have a hard time trying to keep it in line with the runway, and I’m always having to bank so severely to try and keep in line, and during my approach when the plane isn’t aiming to the runway centreline and then when I kick the rudder to the L+R it just keeps veering back away from the centreline, it just doesn’t hold it’s heading to the runway
Great vid, but you can actually arm the approach on the autopilot well before intercepting the localizer course and glide slope. I usually do it when I’m about 30 nm from the airport. That’s also the distance that the gps switches from the enroute sensitivity to the approach sensitivity when conducting gps approaches. Also, just for information purposes, you can find the radio frequencies of all the approaches using the gps. That way you don’t have to pause the sim to look for the frequencies on the map.
Questions: I have been flying the Lear 45 lately using the GPS to get me to he airport and it's working great I usually use autoland, having already pre-programed the ILS runway freq. My questions: When exactly do I switch from the " GPS " button to the " NAV " button , as sometimes pressing it too late I overfly the runway and pressing too early causes my plane to get lost... When should I press the " APP " button What is my best alt. for intercepting the a runway localizer
If you're using ATC, they'll tell you when you're cleared to intercept the ILS. Otherwise, you should usally do it after you've enterered the airport's tower area (dark blue dotted line on GPS). Like in the tutorial, you should hit the APP button as the diamond meets the middle of the PFD (better to do it earlier than later, but spot on is best). As for altitutude, again ATC will always tell you your final altitude before interception, otherwise between 2,000 and 3,000 feet usually. Hope this helps!
Great video Jack. The only things I would have added is that the point at which the autopilot is usually switched off is at 'Minimums', which is listed in the airport information - it's the altitude at which the pilot must go around if he/she has not sighted the runway. The other important point is that the glideslope should be intercepted from below, usually about 2,000 to 3,000 feet. It's a hoot doing ILS approaches at night - one of my favorite flights is flying an F-111 out of Amberley (RAAF Base, Queensland Australia) and flying on autopilot to Oakey (Army Aviation Base), doing an ILS touch and go, and returning to Amberley for an ILS landing - all on autopilot, just magic stuff.

If you have filed a flight plan through the FSX Flight Planner and the last waypoint is the airport ICAO, will I still be able to go to the GPS and set an approach?
Question! Setting the correct headings for a flight from the south to the north, then landing on a runway 31. Using your GPS ILS approach to runway. No need to set headings as your entered flight plan will set it up for the ILS approach. Correct procedure? It worked for me provided you have the correct speed and height to pick up the glide slope.. Any suggestions as it seems a simpler solution?
Have you used. Fs2020 yet? I don’t think you need to program the fms. Can the nav radios and course heading be used only ? First on Mac and then on apr? Even apr works alone
Thank very much mate, this is very helpful... But I have a question. When do we start exactly operating these steps? Is it at the certain distance or how? I hope you reply this, thanks.
Thank you for this tutorial. I will say that I did have some problems as I am flying a DC-10 and the dashboard looks different, but after some interpretative work and a couple of trials and errors, I finally managed to make my first relatively spot-on landing. And it was a night landing. :D
@@JacksFSVideos Ok, I think I was a little too premature in my joy here. ^^ Now I can't seem to get the plane down. I do exactly what you say, got the frequency and heading for the ILS down, put it in the autopilot, I activate the approach vectors in the GPS, switch to NAV, press the approach button, but the plane just stays at the same altitude which is programmed into the autopilot; it doesn't descend on it's own. EDIT: I noticed that when I pressed the approach button, sometimes the altitude LED would not turn off, hence the altitude was still being governed by the autopilot and wouldn't bring the plane down from the set altitude. When it did switch off, that's when the plane started descending. Is there a minimum distance where you need to have done all of these steps for the approach to execute it's function dorrectly? I have saved the flight at 10 nautical miles out, which might be what makes the plane resistant to descent if there is such a criteria in effect.
If you leave it in GPS mode, the autopilot will provide only *lateral* guidance. In order for the autopilot to provide lateral and *vertical* guidance, it must be in NAV mode with the APP engaged. Similarly, VOR LOC mode will only provide lateral guidance, even in NAV mode. If your autopilot is not aligning, check that APP is engaged in NAV mode. You also need to correctly tune the NAV1 radio to the ILS frequency, and set the COURSE to the proper runway heading. In order to align properly, you need to manually (or using the HDG SEL) intercept the localizer (the lateral guidance signal) from a reasonable angle; the autopilot is not perfect. Finally, note that this video is wrong about when to engage APP mode. Engage APP mode *before* the ILS altitude indicator sinks to the middle marker. If HDG, ALT, and APP are all engaged, and you have set up correctly, the autopilot will automatically deactivate HDG and ALT at the proper altitude for a precision approach. I hope that helps!
Jack, When I start a flight like that, I also get a code from the tower of the airport. I typed it in, went to the airport I wanted to go to and one of the landing pads had that code. So basically you can skip the first steps, right?
@@JacksFSVideos With an ILS flight I don't have to go to the menu, World, Airport, Zoom In and search for the frequency because I already got it from the tower.
I've watched this great video 5 times now and i'm starting to get the hang of it - super explantation. Is it possible, you can use your skills to show us how make an ILS in the 747 and/or how to handle the Flight Computer
Hey Jack, been playing flight sim for some years and I used to do ILS landings however it’s been ages since I played. I thought you had to fly to the vor and pick up the ILS signal before activating it, after activation the plane would turn and line up with the runway. Seen the auto pilot and GPS setup too but everything gets a little confusing when you combine it all. Forgetting the GPS I learnt previously by watching a video that showed fly to the airport and head to the vor program the radio with the frequency and set the course once passing the vor activate ILS and the plane will head down to the run way. This seemed more simple then trying to combine 3 videos unfortunately I can’t find the more straight forward video now for reference
You don't have to wait till glide slope intercept to arm the approach, you can arm it as soon as you're established on the localizer, the plane will automatically capture the glide slope.
Hi bro! I have a question. How to understand when to switch from GPS to NAV. And can u please also made a video how to install all ur addons for graphics in the game. Hope u answer
@@JacksFSVideos I have the same question. How exactly do you tell when to switch from GPS to NAV when you follow a flight path with multiple turns on GPS. Occasionally when the plane is finished flying GPS approach vectors and is lined up with the runway (and is very close to runway) and I switch to NAV to see the diamonds and to get the ILS for the approach hold , the vertical diamond that is on the right side of the Primary flight display is all the way at the bottom instead of center/above center and I have to cancel the landing as I'm already too close to the runway to make changes because I followed final vectors with gps all the way up to the runway. There is also no way to see the diamonds when I'm switched to GPS (correct me if I'm wrong) so I can't tell if I'm align properly for the glide scope (vertical diamond on right side of PFD), but if I switch to NAV I can see both the diamonds on the FDP but the plane will not follow the any GPS approach vectors. My altitude is the same as your's on approach. Hope you can help, thanks!
You are setting your landing up for 26 but how can you find out in advance the active runway atc will want you to land on. The way I've done it is by contacting the tower when I'm in range which isn't very far out. Is it something as simple as an assumption made on wind direction although that's no help when there are multiple runways. I wish MS used this video for training because I've only now realized the significance of the diamond.
The Learjet 45 that I like to fly in FSX does not seem to have a course input option. I have been putting the ILS heading into the “heading” input, which is not even active when doing an approach...so what is the point of the ILS heading? At least in the Learjets case?
Hey jack, for some reason the little pink diamond on speed and altitude display is always on the bottom half of the middle where it should be. It never moves and never get it to start from the top. Can someone please help?
I'm a bit confused as to how early I can change the NAV/GPS switch to NAV. Do I not have to be dead straight with the runway or within the green feathers before switching?
Thank you for this video, I've been trying to figure out on my own how to do an ILS landing with the autopilot, and just about always have to go around and land manually. I do have one question, is there a particular height above ground on short final you look for each time to know when to turn off the autopilot and autothrottle? Or if it depends on what kind of plane, is there a particular one you looked for here in your 737? In FSX I normally fly the 737 for shorter flights and 747 for long haul.
There's no specific height, but would be almost always below 100 feet above GL. Just depends on whether conditions, pilot decision-making and aircraft etc.
pilotguy707 you can turn off the auto pilot at around 500 feet and then land the plane manually...there is no set altitude to turn it off so you can use 500 or 800 or 1000.
Hello buddy for some reason when I turn final approach my plane descends very fast then on approach hold my stratojet drops out of the sky any ideas why?
How do you do it in Bombardier CRJ700 I've programed the gps for the approach and engaged the approach on the autopilot but dosn't seem to do anything?
when i turn the switch from gps to nav my aircraft either banks sharply then nosedive into the ground or it just goes in circles am I doing something wrong
I've watched this a bit over five times and it's REALLY helpful! What's weird with my ILS landings though is that as soon as I'm creeping up towards the runway and start trying to get the red and white on the PAPI lights, my plane automatically stalls. I wonder what the problem could be?
I have my APP active way before too, together with HDG and ALT, as soon as the plane intercepts ILS it will make adjustments and disable HDG and ALT when it should.
Sounds like your just missing a few steps and doing them in the wrong order. Try watching the video again and make sure you do each step exactly as I do in the same order. Also if this is your first time trying it, try using the same aircraft and airport
Jack's FS Videos you have done Fantastic explanation thank you very much!!!!!!!for it.Instrumental Landing Systems approach are now extremely easy for me.And feels like a professional pilot.
Thanks for that refresher course! I've been meaning to look that up because I haven't used the ILS in a long while, (been flying helicopters and small, light, vintage, aircraft). However, I noticed that you waited until the diamond dropped to the intersect/capture point before you pushed the APP button. In fact, I always activated the APP button when I was roughly, 8 miles from the runway. As long as your ground altitude is below the top glideslope boundary (usually 2000' to 2500' AGL, and you're less than 2 degrees in pitch or yaw to the localizer, the plane will pickup the glideslope at that intersecting point and the diamond will drop until it reaches the intersection point. Doing it that way left me free to concern myself with other preparations. However, am I using a technically incorrect procedure? Thanks again, Rich
No it's perfectly fine to activate the APP switch before it reaches the centre, just as long as it's not after. The correct procedure is to usually wait until the diamond begins to fall as it confirms the aircraft has locked onto the ILS correctly :)
You don't need to hit the APP Approach button that late when the glides lope diamond is in the middle. What happens is its alot less smooth and has to spend time homing in on the glideslope. Engaging it as it comes alive is alot smoother.
Your tutorials for autopilot helped for the 747 which I usually fly almost all the time. I have a question, when I changed the knob from GPS to NAV after setting the heading and frequency , the NAV HOLD switch turns off. Should we turn it on again or just leave it like that?

You should be switching to ILS once you're on the green ILS fether
Where is the Course Setting option in BOEING 747???
Why you have to switch it to nav? What happens if you keep in GPS itself right before approach? Because when I switch to nav it doesn't align
I think u need to switch to approach
If you leave it on GPS then the aircraft will not perfectly line up with the runway
Where are ILS leds for outer marker MM ..There is no on panel. Does anyone know..I would kindly ask you to help me out. It was great landing
When I press Shift+2 it shows up a black radio stack. It only displays a black box. Can someone help me fix this?
Easy. Simple. To the point.
Jack, When I start a flight like that, I also get a code from the tower of the airport. I typed it in, went to the airport I wanted to go to and one of the landing pads had that code. So basically you can skip the first steps, right?
What first steps? And it depends if you're doing an ILS landing or a GPS landing
@@JacksFSVideos With an ILS flight I don't have to go to the menu, World, Airport, Zoom In and search for the frequency because I already got it from the tower.
Well the tower will only give you the comm frequencies, not the ILS ones
I've watched this great video 5 times now and i'm starting to get the hang of it - super explantation. Is it possible, you can use your skills to show us how make an ILS in the 747 and/or how to handle the Flight Computer
Glad I've been able to help! And thanks for the suggestions :)
Thanks for the video. How and when do you start your TOD. can you please explain that or is there a video about TOD?
I just use ATC
Like I said in the video, there's no need to use the GPS at all, but you can if you want to :)
You don't have to wait till glide slope intercept to arm the approach, you can arm it as soon as you're established on the localizer, the plane will automatically capture the glide slope.
pilotguy707 you SHOULD arm APP mode before capturing the localizer. APP mode is for loc as well as for GS capturing.
Hi bro! I have a question. How to understand when to switch from GPS to NAV. And can u please also made a video how to install all ur addons for graphics in the game. Hope u answer
Just follow this video and it tells you when to do the switch. For my graphics add-ons, check out the FAQ on my website :)
Basically it's once the aircraft has lined up and ATC clear you to intercept the ILS, and you're on final
Basically you'll want to be on an IFR flight plan, ATC will then tell you the runway you'll be landing on way ahead of even contacting the tower
In the landing checklist it says landing speed is 135.
The Learjet 45 that I like to fly in FSX does not seem to have a course input option. I have been putting the ILS heading into the “heading” input, which is not even active when doing an approach...so what is the point of the ILS heading? At least in the Learjets case?
Absoultely no idea to be honest, perhaps as a failsafe?
Can you please do an F/A-18 ILS Lansing tutorial?
I don't think the F-18 has ILS
Hey jack, for some reason the little pink diamond on speed and altitude display is always on the bottom half of the middle where it should be. It never moves and never get it to start from the top. Can someone please help?
You need to start the ILS procedure earlier
In what moment of the flight do we have to do this procedure to intercept well the ILS and land as you explained in the video?
When ATC tell you to :)
So is it when they tell me to expect ILS vectors?
It's when they tell you to defend to your final altitude (2500, 3000 feet etc.) and then clear you to intercept the ILS
Ok! Thanks a lot
DojoFS has been looking for the autopilot course selector on the 747 instrument panel, but it’s not there.
I'm a bit confused as to how early I can change the NAV/GPS switch to NAV. Do I not have to be dead straight with the runway or within the green feathers before switching?
Try the written version of this tutorial here - jfv.tv/flightpath - and let me know if you have any more questions :)
@@JacksFSVideos alright thanks
Thanks im flying the bog standard 737 too, and some missions make you land in heavy fog, now its possible!
Great Video well presented doing everything you sugested but I still OVERFLY THE AIRPORT any clue Thanks
Hello buddy for some reason when I turn final approach my plane descends very fast then on approach hold my stratojet drops out of the sky any ideas why?
Unable to help you, mate, without basic info: simulator, plane, what kind of course were you flying? (IFR, traffic pattern with a jet??)…
How do you do it in Bombardier CRJ700 I've programed the gps for the approach and engaged the approach on the autopilot but dosn't seem to do anything?
Can't remember specifically tbh, haven't used it in ages. But thanks for the suggestion, I'll add it to the list of possibilities
Okay no problem, I dont use it loads I prefer to use the 737 but for shorter flights I tend to use the CRJ700
Yeah you’ve actually made me want to start using it again
when i turn the switch from gps to nav my aircraft either banks sharply then nosedive into the ground or it just goes in circles am I doing something wrong
oh nvm i was doing it at another airport and put in the frequency for Luton lol I just landed at Luton with it's thanks so much man!
I've watched this a bit over five times and it's REALLY helpful! What's weird with my ILS landings though is that as soon as I'm creeping up towards the runway and start trying to get the red and white on the PAPI lights, my plane automatically stalls. I wonder what the problem could be?
Well the ILS will manage your altitude for you
Do you know what is causing the lateral oscillations?
I have activated the "APP " button many times before waiting for the diamond to drop to the center and the plane lands perfectly fine.....
I have my APP active way before too, together with HDG and ALT, as soon as the plane intercepts ILS it will make adjustments and disable HDG and ALT when it should.
Yeah it will work before allowing it to reach the centre :)
When I hit my nav switch to turn from GPS to nav it doesn't line up with the RWY, why is that? And I don't have that diamond.
Sounds like your just missing a few steps and doing them in the wrong order. Try watching the video again and make sure you do each step exactly as I do in the same order. Also if this is your first time trying it, try using the same aircraft and airport
@@JacksFSVideos it still doesnt work for me, and the diamond doesnt show
Thanks, Jack! This was the only video I found on UA-cam.
No problem! Glad I could help :D
Well done Jack!! Useful.
Jack's FS Videos you have done Fantastic explanation thank you very much!!!!!!!for it.Instrumental Landing Systems approach are now extremely easy for me.And feels like a professional pilot.
So glad I could help you out!
Thanks again,
Rich
No it's perfectly fine to activate the APP switch before it reaches the centre, just as long as it's not after. The correct procedure is to usually wait until the diamond begins to fall as it confirms the aircraft has locked onto the ILS correctly :)
You don't need to hit the APP Approach button that late when the glides lope diamond is in the middle. What happens is its alot less smooth and has to spend time homing in on the glideslope. Engaging it as it comes alive is alot smoother.
hey man i was stuck on the final approach finally i was able to land my plane thanks for that now i can fly anywhere ;)
Happy I could help, thanks for watching :))
Why do some airports have ILS Y and Z? Whats the difference
Most helpful ils tutorial, thanks bro
Good video. How do you pan external view like you did?
Your tutorials for autopilot helped for the 747 which I usually fly almost all the time.
I have a question, when I changed the knob from GPS to NAV after setting the heading and frequency , the NAV HOLD switch turns off. Should we turn it on again or just leave it like that?
I actually can't remember to be honest! Just follow whatever happens on this tutorial or try the written version on my website :)
@@JacksFSVideos I will try the written version, thank you for converting me to fly automatically before I flew manually(tiring) 😂. Keep up the good work.🙏👍
Sorry I can't help more! It's just been a while since I've played FSX. Check out jfv.tv/flightpath for the article :)
@@JacksFSVideos I found out that the NAV hold switch should be turned on(It went off for some reason in my case and turned it on again)otherwise it will turn to the North or wont turn because it has to follow the GPS .😉
Thank you for the tutorial I was able to land smoothly with my 747.
