10 years ago you did a great job! and now 10 years later it still a good job. I gotta replace my compressor on the 2000 Astro AWD and this was a great share! You're right! No one points out any detail like you did. Thanks for sharing, Bro!

Dude thanks. Worked on vehicles my whole life. Kinda knew how to do it. But never messed with AC so was unsure. Best AC vid on UA-cam. Thanks again from this driveway mechanic.

great video, it is nice to see, and sometimes hear. what it really takes to change a part. Knowing the different tools needed, especially the "one off's" saves a bunch of time having to figure it out. thanks for the time spent on details. good job

Thanks so much for this video. And you're right, most videos on youtube skip a lot of important steps and information.

no issues with the pipes on back of compressor very easy if you use that little socket rig.

GREAT video! I own a '97 astro...same style compressor setup, and a '94 astro-- similar, but mounts easiest from the back. Which your video shows me what I already suspected on my '97--- that it looks like it can be changed out entirely from the front, from under the hood...and no back-breaking laying on your side under the doghouse area, like on my '94. THANKS! Oh, and if i'm not mistaken, that additional switch on the back of SOME of the Harrison compressors, is a low-oil shutoff. My '94 had one, but my upgrade comp didn't.whitch I changed out. Its nice you show the difference in the oil capacities when rear air is a factor-- additional freon is required too. My '94 w front air: 24 oz Freon and 8 oz PAG46, the '97 with rear ; 32 oz Freon and 11oz PAG46. Go to Harbor Freight and buy the $99 vacuum pump, even if you only do ONE comp change--the difference I found, of letting it run All Night before I recharged was Well Worth the hundred bux!! Colder than factory air! ICE cold, so cold youll be turning it down, on a 102 degree day. Thanks for the VIDEO!

nice,,, so 11oz oil for a dual A/C Astro Van and Safari. 2 in the compressor and the rest in the tank. nice!! the video was very helpful thank you. the switch in the back was confusing me. now i know i gotta switch out the switch.and reuse it because it will need that rear switch for rear A/C

Yes, that is the High Pressure cut out switch. Use extra caution. Because it is in the back out of sight, it gets beat up on removal. I had a guy break that switch when he ripped out the compressor, not knowing it was attached back there to anything else. It's stupid that GM didn't have 2 more inches of wire to allow you room to move the compressor forward enough to see the switch clearly to disconnect it properly. It is in plain sight from the other side if you go through the cab.

Good video man. I wonder what that switch was back on the compressor. It may be the high pressure switch.

Did not take off the hood. If u want extra light take the drivers seat out and the engine compartment. In the video the air box and radiator shroud are removed already.

    Appreciate the comment.
If you replace the compressor I've heard from Old school mechanic , you should replace the accumulator dryer which is the silver cannistor i poured the oil in .Its the easiest way to add oil to that van. Plus its what removes moisture from your system which is the "killer" of the compressor. The evaporator doesnt need to be removed for the compressor job but while you have it apart . you might take a peak in there and see how dirty the coils are.

OK so you say you show everything for those of us who do not know everything. Then why do you not show some of the things you did? For instance you talked about replacing seals for the connectors but then did not show this process. I have already gotten the old compressor out but do not know where all the o rings and things that came in the little plastic bag goes. I see you use a different oil than what I purchased. The oil I have is PAG 46 R-134a while yours is PAG 150. What is the difference. I am trying to get by with just changing the compressor since the pulley had gone bad and most likely the clutch went out. SO do I pour the oil into both sides of the compressor one side and how much?
    Thanks Dave

So what's the list of everything you replaced? And did you figure out why your ac wasn't working in the first place?

If you checkout all my van videos they say what I changed.I changed compressor here because the orfice tube had metal shavings in it when I changed the evaporator.I changed all those parts due to the 223,000 miles on the van. Thanks for watching!
