    Nice video. Pivoting is the key to effective and devastating kicks. I agree its better to learn full rotation first. Once you have the proper technique down, you can take short cuts here and there when the situation dictates. But if you practice taking short cuts from the beginning you will never be able to do a proper kick when needed and you will always be stuck with sloppy kicks.

    Question: how do you pivot when there's a lot of traction? My gym has rubber mats, and I practice with sneakers.

    • @SimonScher
      @SimonScher  Рік тому +1

      You push up a little and rotate when there is slightly
      Less pressure on the foot. So it glides along the floor I stead of digging into it. Between that and building up ball
      Of the foot calluses is how no would recommend overcoming the issue.

    I practiced with the line trick and it helped a lot. I have been trying to get past not wanting to pivot my left foot completely, because even when i let my body turn with it, it is very painful (I got kicked in the knee a few years ago and injured it). Do you have any additional tips?

  • @laurenreinhardt9282
    @laurenreinhardt9282 6 років тому

    What about the simple issue of friction? My dojang uses a shock-absorbing mat to train on, and I find my feet don't pivot easily on that surface. I actually worry about messing up my knee.

    • @NeutroniummAlchemist
      @NeutroniummAlchemist 5 років тому

      Are you sure that you aren't trying to pivot on your whole foot? If your heel is touching the floor, you can indeed mess up your knee, because it's very hard to pivot with your whole foot touching the floor, no matter what it is (except maybe ice) . You only want to lift it up a fraction of an inch though, so that your whole foot can come down for the strike.

    I trained in karate for over 6 years and training to get my black belt. However, my biggest weakness is balance. How do I keep good balance? I have strong legs since I have done resistance training for over a year and a half. Could it have to do with autism? I heard that when it comes to motor skills, autistic people have a harder time with obtaining these skills than normal people and balance is one of them. Could this condition I was born with be holding me back and if so, what do I do to overcome it?

    Sabum SImon, genuine question please. Do you pivot before the kick or with the kick? Thank you very much.

    • @SimonScher
      @SimonScher  7 років тому +4

      A good question. When learning the kick I am happy when my students chamber and pivot fully at any point. For beginners I have them
      Pivot before they even start so that they can train their bodies to expect that alignment. Then after that is understood the pivot should happen at the same time as the kick. As should the chamber. All one motion.

    • @freebiehughes9615
      @freebiehughes9615 3 роки тому

      @@SimonScher Thank you for that answer! I just realized I have got into the bad habit of throwing kicks in a stepwise fashion. Pivot ( brief pause), then chamber ( brief pause), then extend kick and retract. My kicks do not have a terrific amount of power. I will attempt to do everything in one motion from now on. Thanks again!

    Can anyone explain how a photon can have momentum and velocity without having any mass?

    • @SgtCustard
      @SgtCustard 4 роки тому +1

      Because in relativity the traditional momentum-velocity relationship only holds at low speeds. As you approach the speed of light, a particle's apparent mass increases. For a massless particle moving at the speed of light, its momentum (and therefore its 'relativistic mass', although that is not a term used much today) is proportional to its energy.

    • @TonyqTNT
      @TonyqTNT 4 роки тому +1

      @@SgtCustard Thanks so much! So by virtue of moving so fast the photon assumes an effectuated mass and therefore an effectuated momentum.
      Now if only I could punch so fast LOL.

    • @SimonScher
      @SimonScher  4 роки тому

      no, it probably means that you are pushing too hard or too far too fast. Or also likely is that that angle or approach is not right and your are trying to use flexibility in the joint instead of rotating the whole hip unit.
