Great car . My dad had one when we were all little children ..went everywhere in it ... and it never broke down ,, fetched back a few memories for me so thank you you have to get her out on the road !
I think I got more emotional watching this than you did making it! We need to see this car restored. You could get some serious mileage for the channel out of that project.
How many times have we all bought a car that came with a Hanyes manual in the boot with fresh greasy fingerprints on the pages that are relevant to the first problem that occurred? It always tells a story!
Didn't use Hi-Fi speakers, but I did just slap two plastic housed speakers behind the seat of my hold Toyota SR-5, powered by a removable face Pioneer unit. The stereo didn't get stolen. The speakers did...
All of my music is on my mobile, so I've ripped the head unit and speakers out of my 2CV and casts to Bluetooth speakers I can easily fit and remove from the car. Most of the time I just prefer to listen to the gorgeous sound of the flat-twin sitting ahead of me. Can't beat the sound of horizontal air-cooled engines, no matter how many pots they are.
6k likes - this is just amazing. So many fascinating anecdotes and memories for both first cars and Beetles. Thank you all for sharing these messages with my video.
I appreciate that your Beetle video was supported by Haynes and I have had several of their books over the years, but in case you hadn't come across it the book called "How to Keep Your Volkswagen Alive: A Manual of Step-by-step Procedures for the Compleat Idiot" by John Muir is brilliant for Beetle or Type 1/Type 2 owners. I had the Haynes manual too, but the John Muir book has 70's humour, simple and clear instructions, and free hand line drawings (which I found easier to follow than the Haynes photos). It's still available, and if you can get the spiral bound version that's the one to go for. Loved the video - brought back so many memories. I also had the "Volkswagen Story" by KB Hopfinger about the development of the beetle up to post war production. A must read for a beetle nerd.
Ok, Jonny, this officially became my favorite UA-cam channel. I am older but there was a time in my life when I had beetles.. my uncle helped me rebuild my first one that hadn't run in years . One of the things I will never forget that my uncle told me when I wanted to bling out my car.. those empi parts, the chrome parts.. he said "You know, Chrome, won't get you home... Chrome, won't get you home" I never forgot that. I loved the feeling that you when you drove a beetle you immediately were welcomed into the VW club. no questions asked.. it's running, you're in! I never felt that again until my current car... a tesla. but damn. I want a beetle again now :)
KFK 479 H was my first car , Tangerine colour 1500 Beetle , bought in 1980 or £ 80 ! Kept it for 9 years on a budget till the family grew too large , sold for £ 250 , So MUCH of this episode really touched my heart , and rang all the bells about my own experiences , i still have the Same Haynes manual !
Let it be noted that the CD track, that was sadly cut short, opens with the line "Sometimes I feel like throwing my hands up in the air, I know I can count on you." Appropriate I would say. Fantastic video, here's to more.

I also bought my first car at the age of 15 in 1995 and it was a 1968 Beetle, the car was an old Norwegian police car and it still had the original door cards with special pockets for breathalyzer and other equipment.
I tell my mates you gotta talk to your old car when it's been laid up for a while to help it to start. they don't believe me! works for my moggy, works for your Beetle!
My mum had a 1968 beetle in the same colour and I learned to drive and passed my test in it in 1983. The sound of the starter motor and engine idle brought back some happy happy memories. Thanks Johnny!
Hey Jonny, loved watching you bring your old Beetle back to life. Back in 75 I bought a 67 in Vancouver for $300CDN. Savanna beige, had a factory AM radio. I fixed it up, graduated high school, grabbed my dog, and in June 76 drove from Vancouver to Toronto. The sound of your Beetle took me right back, and yes, I could almost smell the inside of that car again. Good luck with your resto. I will watch every episode you make.
Always wanted a beetle but life got in the way. Now that kids the kids are older and I watched your excitement I have a 1974 beetle I am looking at. Same year I was born!! Looking forward to adding my own touch to it. Great video!! Thank you!!
My first car too. 1969. The owner, when I rang him, told me the engine was in the back and I said ‘yeah....duh’ and he said “No, the engine is in the back seat...’. Treasured memories of the build. Thanks Jonny.
We are like kindred spirits. I actually had to watch this video in my old wooden shed, sitting next to my first car... a beetle. Your car is almost an exact copy of mine. I got mine when I was 15 - Mum had bought it brand new in 1974. In 1998 I got my license and it was my daily for years. It hasn't been driven for 15 years. But I did get mine started about 18 months ago with my 8 year old son. I really look forward to seeing you progress on this project, your first true love. As I'm sure you are, I'm so glad I kept my Beetle - my first car. Thanks Jonny. Love your work 👍🏻👍🏻
That's so awesome that you still have your first Beetle. I still have mine, a 72 Super Beetle (1302 LS). It's been with me since I was 10 years old in 1992. Sold it in the late 90s, bought it back, had my first wreck in 1999, restored it and now it's enjoying the life with my 5 other VWs.
Do it. My first car was a '66 Beatle I bought for $500 in 1984, barely running and rebuilt it with help of a retired mechanic from then abundant salvaged parts. I broke the middle finger of my right hand when the tip got caught in the fan during tuning, I market me for life. Rebuilt the engine professionally in '88, then gave it to my brother-in-law when I moved to Hong Kong in '90. Loved it more than my first wife, LOL.
Great vid. I also have a 67 ONO with sprintstar wheels! What a good choice, getting a 67 as your first car; many people rate them as one of the best years for a beetle.
Best thing I’ve seen In a while. I get so emotional around cars. Can’t understand it. I cried watching old jags driving around Castle Coombe once. I don’t know what that’s all about....
Ive just locked my bug up in the garage in February, sadly I came to Spain to a wedding, and that was the last time. But when I get back I will share this same moment. There is something special about a classic bug.
The floods of empathy watching this... I still have my first car tucked away and slightly unloved under a pile of parts picked up over the years. A 1972 1300 bug with a near identical list of mods and retail job back stories. Much love. Keep up the good work.
Great video Jonny, I used to own a Herald 1200 saloon around the time you bought your Beetle, I used it every day, it was our only car, and hearing you talk about your Beetle, buying it and owning it reminded me of when I bought my Herald, it is the best car I ever owned for the journeys and memories. Thank you for letting us in to your memories.
So good to hear a car run again after sitting for so long! It’s not nearly the same, but I got my MK3 Golf VR6 running again last weekend. It’s been sitting since 2012. It rekindled my love for the car!
A very useful information to the owner. The VW engine type H 1500c.c is a very good engine can go with a speed 120km/h very well but do not repair this engine because after the engine Kick the bolts&studs.
Fix it up mine was burnt up. She had 167,528 miles on the speedometer, robin’s egg blue, Blaupunkt radio, air conditioner, When I bought her in we lived in Kingman Arizona and no one bought a car without. I drove 67 miles one way to work, so 132 miles every day..l really like your program and watch every time it comes out Thanks a million.
I bought my first ever Beetle last year a 66 Cal Look.I had never really been into Beetles but there really is something about the driving experience that's really enjoyable and I couldn't believe the amount of attention it gets when I take it out
Awesome... Bloody Awesome! So, it’s 55th birthday in September.... I sense a milestone birthday with a level of work having been completed in time for! 5 months to do it in 😎
Great episode Jonny, it’s very apparent how much she means to you, she’s a beauty. She definitely needs a sympathetic resto, as she’s been locked away too long!
Who hasn't said to their car / motorbike when trying to start it "Come on darling". I've said it many a time to my old vehicles. Love to see your Beetle back on the road restored. Keep it up Jonny, great channel. Thank you for taking us back to your first car. Mine was a '62 Mini 850, long gone but not forgotten.
Wow! My first car was exactly the same. A 66/67 VW beetle 1500 in light blue. Everyone gave me crap about buying it at the time but I loved it (when it was running). I bought it for the same reasons because that year beetle was the perfect one to buy to modify it into the look I wanted. I feel happy that someone else loved the same model car.
Great clip. just spent 2 years restoring an identical car, same year, same colour Zenith Blue. Had it stored in my garage for 14 years. Its a real beauty now. Just don’t see Beetles on the road these days, tends to cause a lot of interest when out and about. This will be a gem to get back on the rd before its too late.
Mr Jonny, this might be the best video you've ever made. Swap "VW Beetle" for a different car for everyone watching, and the romanticism and nostalgia, all the same. Love it!
Excellent video. Brings back so many memories of the era. The awful wages, the struggle as an apprentice mechanic, Beetle welding (never ending) and the joy of fitting your own custom audio. Great days.
Oh Jonny what a trip. I had exactly the same year beetle even the same colour. My first car and only car I have ever loved. After people hitting me numerous times I turned it into a Cal look and then it got stolen :( . I still dream of that car once and a while thinking I've found her again. That was fantastic I even screamed when you got her to start, get her on the road and enjoy it again, I wouldn't hesitate. Thanks for this episode really heart warming.
Memories !!! My irst car was also a 1967 1300 Beetle - white. Had another 3 after it and still miss a Beetle madly. They just had something that no other car ever had since. Get yours back on the road and enjoy !
I usually don't write UA-cam comments, but today i have to. Because, i'm not into Beetles and i don't like VW as a company in general, but the passion that Johnny transpires in every word, is so great that i just sat through a 30 min VW Beetle whithout even feeling it. I feel that this man can shoot werever video it wants and i will enjoy it...
Tear in my eye towards the end for you. Also I was ferried around in one of these for many years as a kid in the 70s/80s when it was all my Dad could afford and serviced himself. Always remember the back seat burning in hot weather if you had shorts on 😀
Great video!! Ii bought my first Beetle at 14 after falling for them at 7 years old. Life got in the way but many years later I am currently doing up a lovely ‘55 Oval window. I’m now 45 and feeling what you do for having a big back in the ‘90’s!! Keep up the Bug videos!! All the best!
I had a 1972 1303S which I bought in 1992 and loved but ended up giving to a mate - and I never saw it again. He sold it a few years later for peanuts and that was the end of that. I so wish I had kept it like you have yours. Now I have the time, money and inclination I could have restored it. Never mind. I will make do with watching you. Great channel and keep them coming.

The sound of the starter motor and engine idle brought back some happy happy memories. Thanks Johnny!
This is amazing! I saw your latest beetle vid and worked my way back to this one. Looking forward to the next one!
Would really need to see an update on this one..
Love your work 👍🏻👍🏻
Love your content Jonny, you should join forces with Edd China and do a classic cars and modifying show! It would be HUGE!!
Do you have the same model and rims Edward? Very cool.
I had as 67 1500. Front disk brakes, push button start and Z bar suspension assist on the back. Best gearbox of all the AC bugs. Loved it.
My second car was a 1975 Super Beetle 1300. This has brought back many happy memories.
love to see this bug restored and to see the smiles on your kids faces when you take them for their first ride in your first car..
5 months to do it in 😎
Good idea SurferEv, cheers.
Hi Simon, I need to see some pics and details of your '67. Got any spares?
Great car Jonny, i wish i still had my 69.
Mr Jonny, this might be the best video you've ever made. Swap "VW Beetle" for a different car for everyone watching, and the romanticism and nostalgia, all the same. Love it!
Very interesting video . They don’t make cars like this old veedub any more.
