There are SO many elephants wounded and killed in India from landmines and snares!! It's heartbreaking. The thing that saves them from poachers is that only male Asian elephants have tusks and most of them are kept and abused in captivity for ceremonies, and that's cruel enough!!
To all the people giving uninformed negative comments: These elephants are from the elephant orphanage. These are orphaned, sick, hurt or over domesticated elephants, who are unable to be rehabilitated into the wild. They spend their lives here, fed, treated and cared for. The elephant orphanage doesn’t have direct access to the river, so they’re walked through public roads (which gets closed to traffic at this time every day, just for them) to the river. These are not pets, these gentle giants are also several tonnes of pure power, which can crush a person without much effort. Some of these are very dangerous, so they are chained, so that they can’t run amok and cause great death and destruction. Keep in mind that they are still taken to the river, with their 100 or so strong herd by only a handful of people. If one elephant runs amok, the whole herd can stampede, and many men, women and children might be killed within minutes. The people who are being labeled in the comments as their ‘abusers’ and those ‘working them’ like ‘livestock’ are infact their overworked and underfunded caretakers. The mahout sticks they carry, their only defense, can be hurtful to the elephants ears, can’t cause much damage. They are not hit by the stick, and in any case, the elephant skin is tough and several inches thick, so even if they get hit by a stick, they’ll barely feel it.

Shame on these awful Sri Lankan people for holding these beautiful elephants captive and controlled...chaining a few of the elephants, riding them and using sharp poke sticks...they all look underweight and fearful of the humans with poke sticks. The disabled one with the missing foot is heartbreaking to witness his struggle. So sad and an awful example of humans being their worst to God's majestic creatures. Shameful...I know 2 people who visited this so called "orphanage" and they said it is a wretched place and an awful life for these animals....they should be allowed to live free.

Wow this made me cry 😢....they have so many beautiful elephants in their control when they really should be roaming free, smh....and those hooks at the end of the sticks, that's what they use to dominate and discipline the elephants. They'll hit them with those hooks in the most sensitive parts of their body, most of the time it'll be by the lower part of their legs, smh. This is horrible.
Hummingbyrd Loves I agree! The poor disabled elephant kept looking at the keeper because he was holding the hook like he was worried he would be prodded or poked with the hook. I am also wondering what happened to their tusks... ivory?! I do not see any of those elephants with tusks.
They don't care for those elephants, you can tell there is no love or respect there. The elephants aren't even enjoying the water, they know all the men want are tourist dollars. Compare that scene to any reputable elephant rescue organisation where all the elephants are healthy and happy, these elephants are neither healthy nor happy. The biggest red flag is riding them. No reputable rescue will ever permit their elephants to ever be ridden again, EVER!
To my knowledge, all of these elephants were rescued from wild when they were injured or misplaced from their natural habitat. These giants were taken to this orphanage when they were very small. The rate of dying of elephants in natural habitat increasing very rapidly. That is the main reason for a orphanage. After them cured, these animals are relocate in natural habitat. Don't be a keyboard worrier, and don't talk non sense if you don't know the real story.

Many ignorant comments. A few wise ones. This an orphanage for neglected , abandoned , and infirm elephants. This is in Srilanka. Govt supported. A vast open forest forest for grazing. Twice a day they make a sojourn to the river for drinks, bath and cooling down. Because it is routine , elephants don't seem to be excited about the water. Only those wandering elephants that sight the water body after a long time show excitement , play , splashing water and mud. These elephants are well cared for , regularly washed and scrubbed. And they are not skinny. Some elephants have chains , yes , but not hobbled. May be for good reason. And they carry sticks , bull hooks , standard minimum equipment incase of need. Elephants are social animals. Segregating that handicapped elephant is cruel. He must be happy with the company. If possible make a visit or send a contribution instead of lip service.
Usually when you watch elephants in water they're throwing the water on themselves with their trunks and the younger ones are rolling over in it .... Doesn't feel right....
I do believe by the look of these elephants they are being abused and mentally controlled behind closed doors. Why are those two elephants in chains? why are they not playing around like normal elephants do? I wish I could just hug and help that poor elephant with the missing leg. so sad and so precious. just beautiful creatures they are.
I heard someone say, why is it in chains? I heard someone say, Aw it's new so it has to have chains. Are you kidding or just lying. They are slaves. I seen their backbones. And I seen then with those hooks. That says it all!
The elephants are beautiful but I hate that they have chains on them I don't smoke yesterday was something I could do to help that poor to stay below that better.
Bless that Disabled Elephant. I need and want some answers though. I know they maybe not being mistreated, I shouldn’t say that because I really don’t know if you are not mistreating them. I don’t understand why nothing is being done to help that Magnificent Elephant. There is a man with a stick hurrying him along, does he or the others have no empathy for the beautiful Elephant, he looks so scared. The pain it must be in is breaking my heart. Why can’t you put him/her on some kind of platform with wheels and pull him done there to the water instead of causing such Agony to make him/her walk all that way. It feels like abuse to me. If you are truly trying to help DON’T leave out the one at this moment that needs your help the most. There has to be a way...PLEASE. 😪😪😪😪 I LOVE them so so very much. They are Gentle Giants with too much Evil surrounding them. I’m so sad 💔💔💔.
The fact that he has that long stick near that three leg elephant, is triggering. People are really God's evilest creation! He even ended up like that, due to an evil human being!
Elephants look in stress...I think it's a bad environment...look at lek chailert elephants park in Thailand they look soo happy there..plz I request government to free them in a good friendly environment
At first thought this was really cool an how great it was that this town let the Elephants come thru to the water. But then I saw the men with their POKERS!!!!!!!!! An I got sad an Angry. If those ELEPHANTS only knew how bad they could mess up those bad men!!!
Actually, I've learned that the stick the handlers use for training and guiding elephants when used properly, are only meant to help guide and nudge them in the right direction and are never supposed to be used to poke them or harm them in any way. That said there are still cruel people in the world harming elephants. However, I think these men working for the elephant orphanage are handling them with a great deal of respect. The truth is, they are very fortunate elephants. I'd support this group in a heartbeat. BTW, the elephants are very aware of how much damage they could do. They choose not to. I'm certain too, they are aware that these men have been helping them, which is why they are so docile and well behaved.
Hi Rachele, I am deliriously addicted to elephants everywhere. I read, research and am watching videos of elephants all the time. Every day, actually. I can't seem to stop. I have gotten to know their body language quite well. I'm not sure how many elephant orphanages there are in India, but they are a real blessing compared to what would happen to them if left to foraging where they were, as the human population there is pushing them out of their natural habitat and people are killing them to save their crops. I don't remember where I learned about the stick but, as you can see, the men are not having to use them whatsoever. Those fellows you see in chains are newcomers and are chained specifically to protect the other elephants as well as themselves and the people until they learn the ropes of their new home. It also may be that they are males in musth (Their testosterone levels are something like 60% higher during this period when they want to mate). They can become VERY aggressive and quite dangerous during this time and have been known to kill anything that gets in their way. So they have to be controlled. These elephants are very relaxed and enjoying a nice stroll to the river for a dip, which they LOVE. Hope this helps. :)
Suzanne Dawson I totally agree with u, When it comes to being addicted to Elephant Videos. I also have the same problem.lol It's VERY NICE TO TALK WITH U.MAYbe we could talk on Facebook or somewhere else about ELEPHANT VIDEOS an Such.???????

@nuren I can't come to such a country where people are so cruel and primitive with animals. I can't visit such a country and spend a penny knowing that that money contributes to the torment of an animal ..and to come back for a stinking beast with a human. In your country, 90% of the people are very cruel, stinky, soulless, miserable ..., animals that are exploited and tortured to the maximum by humans. And these poor elephants are very tormented .. I have friends who have visited this country , these elephants from this so-called "sanctuary" ... friends who saw how these elephants are treated, how they are imposed with those iron hooks .. how they are exploited ... there are so many clips ... anyway my friends don't they will never visit this country again, the countries where animals are tormented and exploited these so-called sanctuaries where elephants are tortured, tortured, exposed for entertainment, for various rituals and religious holidays, to hard work ... In places where animals are not really exposed and tortured ..there are no chains, people do not have those metal hooks. I would like people in your countries to become human, to become civilized, empathetic ... and to care about poor animals ... because they are wonderful creatures! I don't understand why you are so evil and cruel! But that's how most people in this world are ... I hope for a better world where animals and people live together and people love them, to appreciate them as they deserve, to live together in a better and more beautiful world, without poverty, without cruelty!
That poor Elie is suffering they should bring him to a sanctuary and be treated. I wish these Elephants are just in the wild just like their African Elephant cousins.
This place is called an elephant orphanage. Most of these elephants are brought here as newborns if they have lost their mothers or had some problems regarding health. They try to send them back to the wild in early adulthood but some do not integrate well and they are allowed to stay there.
I thought I read somewhere where they had made a prosthetic foot for an elephant like this. It would probably never work in the wild but for a captive elephant that could be cared for. Hell anything that could be secured in place and could help distribute the weight. You can see how it has already started to deform the good leg.
These mahouts are cruel bastards, they’re probably trying to get sympathy by bringing the injured elephant down here. Don’t ever pay for rides, or paintings or anything these monsters make any elephants do. In many places it’s illegal to do this but they know how to get around it. They have made prosthetic limbs for an elephant and if these men really cared they would do that or pit this suffering animal down.
Cindy Foore, you talk about something you don't know. These elephants are well cared. I am from this place. It is true that they must be in the wild. But they were brought here after they became orphan. By the way this is a way to make money but all money goes for their caring.
Maybe something can be done.. maybe not. I feel like we don’t know enough about the economics of this organization to start making assumptions of what it can and cannot do
This elephant video is one of the most heart wrenching ones I've ever seen. Tourists probably paying to see elephants held captive, elephants in chains, and that poor gal with the missing foot....so very sad! They don't even look happy standing in the water when free elephants would be having a ball!

@@abidzoardar These elephants are not wild, nor are they rescued from the wild, this is a lie told to tourists. They are a breeding facility. All those calves you see are born in the facility, not one is a rescue. They aso use cruel outdated methods of training relying on hooks and chans, negative reinforcement. It is an uphill battle trying to change these practises in facilities like these.

True. They are definitely not happy. Elephants usually love water. Here they are mechanically standing in the water_ their spirits broken. God only knows what kind of abuse they undergo. All this is a play for the tourists. They don't look healthy.

Bro , the chained elephants are male elephants, they should be chained because if they are in muast they are very dangerous, they may kill people and other elephants
@@chaitanyareddymuthyala2967 you know, I didn't think of this. I just thought that elephants in a control environment were better behaved than the ones in the Wild. I look at so many videos and male elephants in Sanctuaries, Zoos, and Orphanages seems to be more tamed.
Every elephant in this video would have been beaten into submission, please don't think for a moment they are naturally herding together to follow humans to the water. The people you’re labeling as abusers are their overworked and underfunded caretakers.
5954ldydi - I agree. In fact I thought elephants need all four of their legs to support their weight or else they end up with severe back injuries.

But why do a lot of them look so starved? New arrivals?
These are the Elephants which saved Indian soil to get routed from Alexander's army.

I LOVE elepants big time.
Usually when you watch elephants in water they're throwing the water on themselves with their trunks and the younger ones are rolling over in it .... Doesn't feel right....
U r so right, not one elephant seems thrilled to b there !!
I think it is because they are captive elephants.
Shame poor baby..He's body changed shape because of the balancing as he walks.. I pray some wealthy animal lover gets a prosthetic foot for him🙏🙏
I do believe by the look of these elephants they are being abused and mentally controlled behind closed doors. Why are those two elephants in chains? why are they not playing around like normal elephants do? I wish I could just hug and help that poor elephant with the missing leg. so sad and so precious. just beautiful creatures they are.

Very sad for that Elephant...
I heard someone say, why is it in chains? I heard someone say, Aw it's new so it has to have chains. Are you kidding or just lying. They are slaves. I seen their backbones. And I seen then with those hooks. That says it all!
I hope these elephant have a stampede on these people. This is sooo heart breaking

Unfortunate and gory sight ... what have we done .. humans have brought down hell on every single creature on this planet.
The fact that he has that long stick near that three leg elephant, is triggering. People are really God's evilest creation! He even ended up like that, due to an evil human being!

Suzanne Dawson I hope you are right. How did u find out that information??
I also have the same problem.lol
It's VERY NICE TO TALK WITH U.MAYbe we could talk on Facebook or somewhere else about ELEPHANT VIDEOS an Such.???????

Iio
That poor Elie is suffering they should bring him to a sanctuary and be treated. I wish these Elephants are just in the wild just like their African Elephant cousins.
Please free the elephants! It’s hard for me to watch those workers not nice to them!
Nope.. European hunters are the bastard mother fuckers scum off this world..
Cindy Foore, you talk about something you don't know. These elephants are well cared. I am from this place. It is true that they must be in the wild. But they were brought here after they became orphan. By the way this is a way to make money but all money goes for their caring.
Awe bless it, wish I'd not watched this now, feel so upset, surely something can be done for him

They have had their will broken and are slaves :'( Humans and their evil landmines and even the cruel bullhooks they use to control and beat the elephants with make me sick ... This place is called an elephant orphanage. Most of these elephants are brought here as newborns if they have lost their mothers or had some problems regarding health. They try to send them back to the wild in early adulthood but some do not integrate well and they are allowed to stay there. Elephants are not used for heavywork anymore in Sri Lanka. Its much cheaper and efficient to use machines running on dinosaur juice.
This is disgusting. No elephant should be in chains ever for any reason. Just don't take them till the are sure of things. That disabled one should not be paraded in front of everyone. They should have a mud hole on site incase he gets in trouble in the water. I cant watch anymore. This is disgusting, and sad to watch. How can anyone support the exploration and cruelty of these beautiful creatures.
