I love the way you are so modest... such a beautiful creative process. One comment you made really brought an idea home: you get almost to the end before you begin to feel quite happy with it, and that's a brilliant lesson... to persist and just keep going. Thank you.
I’m a Vicki....lol. I pretended it was mine and I was saying I love turquoise and purples...I love everything you do. You should never stress. Seriously. ( though I do because I love abstract but most ppl I know, don’t.)
I have really enjoyed watching you work. It’s fascinating to watch the painting unfold at this speed. I found myself seeing things show up just moments before you would talk about them. It’s a beautiful piece. Thank you for sharing this. 💖
Thank you for sharing the video of your art making process. I gives me the courage to not give up on my unfinished pieces. Happy new year from Montréal !
I immensely enjoy your art and the process. I think the person who commissioned this piece received another level of enjoyment seeing her art getting created.
This is so fun to watch! Love your process. About the black... mixing other colours in is a great idea. I'm a graphic designer and whenever we need to cover a large printed area in black we generally use a combination of the other process colours (magenta, cyan, yellow) and can adjust it to be warm or cool, depending on the other colours in the pieces. We refer ti it as "rich black'. I had more depth, more ink coverage and looks far better. Cool connection!
@@BettyFranksArt I love your paintings so much. I watch your videos often as they inspire me no matter what mood I am in… one day, when I can be well off, I will buy many of your large paintings.
Hi Betty - Sending wishes for the best new year ever and more terrific UA-cam videos. I learn something new every time I watch you. I love how this painting evolved and how you talk about the process. It is beautiful. The colors are wonderful. I cannot wait for your new course to be launched. Thank you for sharing.
I'm watching and am at 32:57. love the painting at this stage--as a new painter, I would have stopped here, as I love it. Very Monet-like. Anxious to see the rest of the video and final result. thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it up to that point! Each artist will stop when they feel they need to stop. Plus, as this was a commission, I had to keep the client's needs in mind, too. Thanks so much for watching!
Your art work is amazing Betty. Wonderful to watch you painting. The sound on video is perfect. Maybe that guy who complained needs a new phone ?? Happy New Year 2023. Cheers Trish Australia
Betty! THANK YOU!!! Your commentary was so freeing for me as an artist! You said many things I resonated with, especially imposter syndrome! Lol 😂 And I love your work!!! Just beautiful ❤
Betty, Thanks so much for this big custom piece video. I am facing a large custom piece this month. A number of your suggstions about working with the client will come in handy. No doubt ! I signed up for everything I could see ! The workshop in the SW sounds fabulous. Thanks again, Betty. You are so generous.
Thank you so much, Betty! Fabulous piece! Congrats to you and Vicky! What a beautiful home she has! Perfect for your gorgeous art! And yes, good for you to post what you want, instead of catering to the silly algorithm which wants us to post reels. We're not robots, after all! I love being consistent. Consistently human!! Much Love, darling, and thanks again for so generously sharing your creative process!!
Hi Ulrike! Glad you enjoyed the video. I'm certainly loving that piece in her home. It's perfect. And, as for IG, well, you know how I feel. I'm so much happier mostly posting regular photos again. Yay! Let's stay human, right?!
I completely understand your “reel” logic! When I joined IG it was because it was photograph based and you could just post a photo or also share a story behind it. Now I feel like IG just wants to top TikTok or whatever… I’m not on that platform. I just want to share photos of my art and spend more time creating it; not videos & reels. I love how you struggled through this piece. I really resonated with you and it made me think more about some pieces I’ve struggled with it & am struggling to complete. Thank you for being so raw & always keeping it real Betty. You rock!! 😊
Yes, I joined IG for that same reason--photos. I never got on TikTok. What I have noticed these past few weeks is that my IG account finally started to grow (slowly...but at least in the right direction!). So, I think there is something good happening with posting photos. I have come to the conclusion that I may get more people viewing my reels, but they are not following me. I get more follows from my photos. Always something new to learn!
Thanks for sharing. I feel I always take away something from watching your process! I especially love how you share your thoughts and insecurity about the piece. How can I stop seeking representation in abstracts?
Glad you enjoyed the video! I'm not sure how to answer your question. Are you seeing representational images in abstract artwork or are you creating abstracts and you're adding representational pieces?

Just found your channel. Watching while knitting - great combination! I understand the pressure of creating commission pieces, but I also understand that when you nail it, you've got some very happy clients. I loved this painting, and I'm totally inspired!
I'll have another one uploaded soon. I ran out of space on my laptop. I've ordered a backup drive. Waiting for that to be set up so that I can finish editing and uploading videos.
Love this one! And I avoid the Instagram Reels at all costs. If I want videos, I come here. I don't know if they were trying to cash in on TikTok, but it doesn't work for me.
Yup, I think they want to be like TikTok. It's frustrating! I like that I went back to posting more photos than spending a lot of time creating reels (to their benefit more than mine!). Thanks for watching, Terri!
Thank you for this, I thought I was the only one that would stress about commissions and honestly that’s the reason I avoid them. I am so insecure about them. Any idea to what to do about this insecurity?
I completely understand about feeling insecure. My confidence was built one painting at a time over a long period of time. If it's a smaller commission, consider creating 2 of them and allowing the client to pick the one they like best. It takes the pressure off of creating just one that you want them to love. I hope that helps!
Hii from Denmark:-D .Love it and i love the value and the darker marks too because it gives a lot af contrast. And so nice to watch longer demo, keep doing that. Thanks

I am wondering if the oil pastels will react when varnishing. I did an acrylic on canvas, and used oil pastels to mark in between layers of paint. Some areas have exposed pastel linework which I'd like to leave as is. I am planning to varnish with liquitex satin varnish. Also, wondering about pencil marks. Thanks for your help!
Hi Christine! It's harder to varnish oil pastels...because they are oil. That's why I stopped using them. You'll want to use a spray varnish for oils first then you can use a water based varnish (like Liquitex). Pencil marks and crayons, etc, will be protected with the spray varnish. Here's a link to my video on varnishing acrylics: ua-cam.com/video/bVACgRad2Qk/v-deo.html
Thank you so much for sharing! I painted with oils for 20 plus years and quit. I was sick of the mess the toxins etc. And my attention was redirected toward another passion (grandchildren). 🥰 I hadn’t painted really for 8 plus years. After watching three hours straight of you painting. I dove back in. Acrylic paints are such a joy. And your work is filled with happiness vibes! Truly, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHARING,
Loved loved loved watching you work thru this commission! It turned out fantastically good. I also loved the Hunter green your incorporated. It looked fabulous in your client’s home. Happy New Year Betty . Looking forward to your videos which I so enjoy.👍🏼💕
Hi Betty, I wasn't too sure about this one, I can usually see/read flowers or garden somewhere, but not in this one really. I love the teal. But felt the pallet was mostly cool. I was missing pink!😀. I know you said your client asked for some rusty gold. When the final piece was in situation hey presto! It really worked, especially against the background of her wall colours ...she added to the look with her soft furnishings as well. I'm sure she was delighted with the end result. I am an English 70 yr old teenager living in Spain...I enjoy oil painting.. seascapes and horses, large florals, and have also tried my hand at abstract...but as I have an architectural background, I seem to always paint geometrical abstracts, but am trying to loosen up. Your style is such fun to watch, and I've had a go! but although I'm painting a looser, more relaxed style now my pieces are still very much linear. Well maybe I will develop a style of my own one day. 🤷♀️😀 I will keep at it!! Thank you for your videos. I love them. Ps we are down sizing soon, and I will lose my art studio.🤦♀️.all my paints are packed away so I am using my small watercolour set, to amuse myself....very Kind Regards Debs in Spain ❤
Hi Debs! So cool that you're in Spain. I'm sorry to hear that you're losing your art studio. Sounds like you're finding a way to stay create with the watercolors. Thanks so much for watching my videos and following my art adventures!
Betty I loved your Fields of Flowers online course. Every step of the way it was informative and excellent! It was power packed with information and really great teaching. It was a ton of information and then some and your price was excellent and affordable for those of us with fixed modest incomes. For that I thank you with all my heart. I love all your videos as well. Thank you for your wonderful teaching! You rock !!! You know your stuff girl!!! I’m so glad you are teaching! No more imposter syndrome! You are a Master at your art! 👍🏼🎉🎉🎉💕🌺❤️
Great to see you back Betty! Looking forward to checking out the course too. Just reading through ALL the comments and need to add that there is NO problem with the sound. I'll say no more! Except to say Happy New Year for 2023!
I live the end piece! On the wall it's stunning. I wonder if I'm going to ruin my enjoyment/appreciation of it when I share what the blue/teal blocks look like to me. I get what they represent but I can't help but to see tombstones. Standing on their own. Could be the Russian invasion of Ukraine or that plus Covid. Which is not over. But then I remi d myself they're a version of new life- flowers and I love that idea. Again, your work is amazing. Thank-you!!
Hi Betty, thank you so much for this video…. I was fascinated with this whole process and in particular with your comments as you go along. I have just completed a commission, 2 abstract paintings for a friend, you described all of my emotions going through the whole process, could have been me commenting, using the exact words I was saying to myself. This validated that it is normal to have these feelings, we all go through the same thought processes! Fascinating…. Loved your finished product, wonderful!!!
Hi Frema! Here's the link to join my email list. I'll be sending an email on Thursday with a special discount code: www.bettyfranksart.com/email-sign-up
Hi Betty. I love love love this piece also. Once again great to watch your process - gorgeous outcome. I'm really pleased you left that forest green in the lower left hand quadrant, otherwise you may have painted over the 'face' that jumped out to me........ fantastic!
Lovely…I enjoyed how you said it often “doesn’t flow”……it is such a key when creating! It isn’t just instant but the process comes in stages. Love watching your work and final piece!
I so enjoy watching you create & pull your painting all together. It's magical. The big fat brush you used to apply the black paint, can you share the brand, size & where you got it? It looks so efficient & luscious.
Hi Nancy, I apologize for my delayed response. I had to remember to check when I was at the studio. It's a Royal & Langnickel brush, but I can't read anything more about it on my handle because it's covered in paint. I hope you can find it!
Reels are good for sharing, but I prefer the longer demonstrations. Love hearing your thought process. As a beginner, it’s encouraging to see your paintings evolve. I love how the end result often looks completely different from the beginning. This helps me get through the times I get stuck and frustrated with my own. It’s not over until it’s over!! 😂
I do really like that dark green section and you have incorporated the rust in beautifully - there are some really interesting sections where the rust is smooshed/scrubbed in with the other colours. I love that centre middle section at the bottom of the painting too. Beautiful :) PS I love hearing you talk about your work and your decision-making. The sound is fine. :) You are really generous in sharing this.
Betty, please, for your own safety, remember cadmiums are absorbed into your skin-lotion is not enough of a barrier. Some oil painters can no longer work because of what cadmium has done to them. Please use gloves.
Thanks, Sherrie! I get very little paint (if any) on my hands. The lotion is not meant to be a barrier to protect my hands from the paints. It's just to make it easy to wash it off if I get some on me. Thank you for your concern!
Hi Bente! I don't have any structure of end result in mind when I start. I go where the painting takes me. That's what I really love about intuitive painting.
I wonder if I could paint following her idea of painting without ending up looking like Betty Franks. Has anyone tried painting by following her videos?
Hi Patricia! Lots of folks have taken my workshops (both in-person and online) and have used my process to incorporate into their own style of painting. In all my years of attending workshops with artists I love, I always took home something from the workshop/course that I could start doing in my own artwork. Thanks so much for watching and asking that question!
Betty, work on your butt muscles for lower back pain, also stand with one foot ahead of the other instead of side by side to distribute more weight off of the hips, then bend at the knee.😊
Hi Jody, I'm sorry you're having issues. It shouldn't matter where you are in the world. Here's the link for you to try again: www.bettyfranksart.com/email-sign-up If you're still having issues, email me at bettyfranksart@gmail.com and we'll figure out another way to sign you up. Thank you!
I love this painting and watching you create was such a pleasure!! On your studio tour at the end, your other larger painting on the wall is gorgeous!!
Hi Kay, I'm not sure where you were in the video when you made this comment--beginning, end? I used some rust in the beginning. I was squeezing it out directly from the tube onto the canvas. I didn't call it out because I think I was talking about something at the time. I then brought some of the rust color back again towards the end. Thanks so much for watching!
As always I love your work! I actually have a question about when you paint on 18x24 paper. Do you paint on the wall? If yes, how? I am trying to setup my studio and I can't paint flat on a table, it worsens my migraines. So on the wall or on an easel are my options. I usually work on 3 or more at a time, going back and forth. Any ideas? Thank you! You are always so inspirational. 🧡
Hi Paula! When I work on 18x24" paper, I like to tape it up on the wall. I just put tape on the backside of each piece. Super simple and convenient! Have fun creating in your studio!!
@@BettyFranksArt Thank you! I have set up my studio with a standing easel and plastic on the wall, so I guess I can do either! Or both! I usually tape the edges, but I like the idea of tape on the back and using the sheet. 🧡😁

@@BettyFranksArt thanks so much!

Thanks so much for watching!
LOVE IT! LOVE YOU!
Thank you kindly, Nancy!
thanks so much for sharing
You are so welcome, Suzanne! I appreciate you watching!
💕💯🎨🎨🎨
Thanks so much for watching the video to the end, Robert!
Wow the size of it
Thank you kindly, Meredith!
Thank you so much for sharing! I painted with oils for 20 plus years and quit. I was sick of the mess the toxins etc. And my attention was redirected toward another passion (grandchildren). 🥰
I hadn’t painted really for 8 plus years. After watching three hours straight of you painting. I dove back in. Acrylic paints are such a joy. And your work is filled with happiness vibes! Truly, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHARING,
Welcome back to painting! I'm so glad you enjoyed my video and that you're back to doing something you love!
Loved loved loved watching you work thru this commission! It turned out fantastically good. I also loved the Hunter green your incorporated. It looked fabulous in your client’s home. Happy New Year Betty . Looking forward to your videos which I so enjoy.👍🏼💕
Thank you so much, Astrid! Glad you enjoyed the video! Happy 2023 to you!
Ps we are down sizing soon, and I will lose my art studio.🤦♀️.all my paints are packed away so I am using my small watercolour set, to amuse myself....very
Kind Regards
Debs in Spain ❤
Thank you so much!
Great to see you back Betty! Looking forward to checking out the course too. Just reading through ALL the comments and need to add that there is NO problem with the sound. I'll say no more! Except to say Happy New Year for 2023!
Thank you kindly, Joan and Happy New Year too!
Thank-you!!
Thanks, Barbara! I believe we all bring our own experiences, feelings, emotions into artwork when we're viewing it. Thanks for sharing!
Absolutely stunning!!!!
Many thanks, Patricia!
Thanks so much for watching the video to the end, Cynthia!
I love watching the process. Love the beginning stages with the yellow, orange and pinks. So warm. Beautiful painting Betty!
The beginning is always so loose and free. Thanks for watching, Esmeralda!
How do I find out more about your course?
Hi Frema! Here's the link to join my email list. I'll be sending an email on Thursday with a special discount code: www.bettyfranksart.com/email-sign-up
@@BettyFranksArt Thanks so much. Would the course be appropriate for a beginner?
@@fremabram6279 Yes! I break everything down. 🙌
Hi Betty. I love love love this piece also. Once again great to watch your process - gorgeous outcome. I'm really pleased you left that forest green in the lower left hand quadrant, otherwise you may have painted over the 'face' that jumped out to me........ fantastic!
I'm glad you enjoyed the video, Deb!
Lovely…I enjoyed how you said it often “doesn’t flow”……it is such a key when creating! It isn’t just instant but the process comes in stages. Love watching your work and final piece!
Yes....that whole flow thing can't be forced. It takes time for it to come together. All part of the process!
So true! It's not over until YOU say it's over! Thanks so much for watching this video!
I appreciate you watching and commenting, Libby!
i like it a lot, beautiful.
Thank you, Janina!
I love the way the “not working upper left” was almost like negative space. Everything you do looks great. Thanks for this video as well.
You're very kind, Renee! Thank you!!
Beautiful painting. I love the colours. Do you use any structure before you start painting? Best regards from Bente in Oslo😊
Beautiful!
Thank you!
Just watched this all again because i love the way you talk about the challenges and how you approach the problems you encounter.
Thanks, Emmanuel! I think I need to listen to the advice I gave myself. I'm really struggling with a large piece this week!
Betty, work on your butt muscles for lower back pain, also stand with one foot ahead of the other instead of side by side to distribute more weight off of the hips, then bend at the knee.😊
If I do my squats and planks, I do much better! Thanks!
This piece looks fabulous in the client's space, Betty. Beautiful work.
Thank you kindly, Vatican!
Your email sign up form is not working. I live in Portugal - would that effect it?

On your studio tour at the end, your other larger painting on the wall is gorgeous!!

I'm so grateful to you for your support of my art and my videos, Rita! Thank you!!
Dear Betty! Have a happy New year, wish all blessings comes to your way!
I appreciate you watching and commenting, Ismeta!
I love seeing your start to finish process that you narrate so I get the why. Thank you!
I'm so glad you're enjoying my videos, Tammie! Thank you for watching and commenting!
I noticed no circular shapes were added to that piece like you sometimes do…why?
Good question! Sometimes it just doesn't work in my overall piece. I have a few in the early stages, but covered them up. Thanks so much for watching!
What a nice suprise to see a video of you again! 🥰 love your art. Wishing you a great new year!
I'm glad you enjoyed the video, Kat and Happy New Year too!
I wondered about the rust when you added it, didn’t remember you using it before.
Thanks so much for watching!
loved your comments as I made my own comments, you came in with the same thing:)
Great minds! Thanks for watching, Courtney!
