Honestly two major Final Fantasy titles releasing in back to back years is pretty impressive for the series and Square Enix as a whole. Something we haven’t seen in a while. Literally we had to wait 5+ years for the next mainline entry ever since XII, but from XVI to VII Rebirth in less than one year that’s a pretty nice release window

I don't like that tbh. Once FFVIIR came out, SE stopped giving any attention to XVI. With XV, despite the poor state of it's initial release, they worked 3 whole years in that game, and the final result was INFINITELY SUPERIOR than the first version. They could have been done some more things with XVI, like doing a PS5 Pro patch, adding FSR3 to the game or keep trying to optimize a little better the PC port. But that didn't happened, only one year after XVI release, they abandoned it.

@@venweasel 6 and 7 blow X out of the water by major numbers in my opinion 4 & 9 beats X easy too. My specific point is that 9 is the last "actual FF" made. That does not accuse X, XII, or the rest of not being okay or great games. They just are not FF, except in Title only. While I hated X myself I would at least grudgingly accept that as a FF game to some extent. The skill chart was Path of Exile not FF.
My problem is the heavy bias I have in the history of FF. I grew up playing FF on NES. Now, I certainly do not expect or demand that FF have "specific" features but there needs to be a feel... 4,6,7,9 deliver on that very well and brought the franchise to memorable and long enduring regard.
The first FF I hated was 8. I loved FF Tactics... To me the Pixel Remasters were such a let down. I wanted to see quality pixel artwork for the series a lot more like Octopath and they missed the boat on that.
And I don't have a problem with remakes, rebirth, re-imaginations or anything like that either. But the talent that brought the series to fame is just not there anymore... neither is the mentality. The studios are just too "infected" with current day problems that afflict the AAA scene.
I have been playing far more Indies the past 10 years and I have barely touched anything out of a major studio. They just don't make fun games. They are all about mindless hack and slash graphics that look paltry, cheap, and stupid.
I mean... I am sick of seeing swords going through monsters and screen filling bosses all the time and the cheap "flinching" when hit nonsense. When are we going to finally use the tech we have to make the action "more convincing"?
And to be fair to FF, my complaint on this is not just on them. It's on the whole industry! I want to see "quality" in games again... back then we had limitations on hardware so we had to make due... but not now... now it's cheap flim flam.

    • @kupomogli
      @kupomogli 21 годину тому +1

Quality over quantity is indeed a good thing, but people focus too much on Forspoken, Foamstars, and Babylon Falls, two of the three were budget microtransaction garbage.
However, there was Crisis Core Reunion, Tactics Ogre Reborn, Star Ocean the Second Story R, Live A Live, Star Ocean The Divine Force, Valkyrie Elysium, Harvestella, Diofeld Chronicles, Chrono Cross Remastered, Romancing SaGa Minstrel Song Remaster, Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy Origins, and Triangle Strategy.
The year was actually full of great games, and early 2023 had Octopath Traveler 2 and Theatrhythm Final Bar Line.
There was no quantity over quality here, it more so quantity AND quality in most of 2022 and most of these games didn't sell well. Crisis Core Final Fantasy 7 Reunion was more than just a remaster, the combat system had a major overhaul and brand new textures were used to replaced everything in the game bringing it closer to a major budget PS3 release when it comes to graphics. It doesn't look as good as Lightning Returns Final Fantasy 13, but it's close.
Tactics Ogre Reborn, another one of these "remasters" is a masterpiece. However, much like Crisis Core Final Fantasy 7 Reunion, they only lifted the PSP version of Tactics Ogre and use that as the base of the game. So outside of the story and locations, Tactics Ogre Reborn's gameplay is completely different. The original game was one of the earliest TRPGs and it's actually a TRPG that defined many of the mechanics that we know and love from the genre today, so much so that the original game is still a fairly good game but it's got a lot of problems. They attempted to fix those problems with the PSP version but added many others and the PSP version is very grindy, and I myself would say is not a good game. They rebuilt the entire combat system and mechanics based off what was best about the original game and what was best about the PSP game and removing all the issues from both. It's the third release, but they really perfected the genre.
Those are two of the best in my opinion, but what about some that are seen as the worst?
I know that this video referenced the low scores of Valkyrie Elysium and Diofeld Chronicles, but Valkyrie Elysium is actually not really bad. It's not Crisis Core, it's not Final Fantasy 7 Remake, etc, but it's decent, it's actually got kind of great combat system provided you put in a couple of hours to unlock some of its underlying depth as it's all locked behind weapon upgrades. Ys8 was an amazing game, Ys9 was a bit disappointing but good, but Valkyrie Elysium is better than Ys10.
Stranger of Paradise is another one that gets a lot of crap since we all know how much Jack needs to kill Chaos, but Stranger of Paradise is the closest we'll ever come to a God Hand successor. The storyline is written in such a way throughout the entire game it's a terrible storyline until the very end of the game where it comes to a full circle and at that point you'll have mixed feelings about the whole storyline because it's like, yeah, the storyline is actually great after they reference everything and you find out why they said what they said at different points in the game. However, throughout the game, the gameplay was the best thing about the game, giving us the best 3D beat em up we've seen and probably ever will see again outside of God Hand. If you like action games, this is a must play, DMC5 is better but it's also debatable that it's kind of not, I mean, DMC5 forces you to play through many stages with V. If you've ever played DMC5 and weren't one of the few people who actually like playing as this character, you'll know exactly what I'm talking about.
So in 2022 and early 2023, Square Enix released a huge amount of games and it deflinitely wasn't "quantity over quality" as most of these games were great and some were just good. But people ignore just how good the games this year were for Square Enix because most people just focus on the biggest games of the year, most gamers are just casual sheep that will sit there and be told what's good or bad. Most of these people haven't played the games they praise or berate and do so because a large group of people on the internet told them so.

Hell look at RGG studios as an example for this. They released Like a Dragon, then the Kiryu gaiden game that came out before infinite wealth, then infinite wealth came out, now there's a Majima game who's a fan favorite character coming out in less than 2 months. RGG isn't releasing 7 games in 3 years yet if you talk to people about the studio a whole lot of people say, including myself, that we aren't worried about the quality of the game cause it's RGG. I think they need a smaller number of AA games that are high quality but still cost lot less to develop than Final Fantasy. It seems like a dangerous strategy to put all your eggs in the AAA basket when your AAA games, despite being high-quality games, failed to meet sales expectations.
At the same time, they should absolutely put as much as they can into the final part of the FF7 Remake trilogy. I know there are a lot of people who are interested in it but don't care to buy it until all the games are released. They could also offer a discounted trilogy bundle.
I also really hope that we get more Mana games. I had a great time with Visions of Mana, and I think it laid a solid foundation to build from in future Mana games.

I mentioned this before, but why would be Square-Enix holding back the reveal of Final Fantasy IX remake just because of the Nintendo Switch 2, since the original game was released on the PSOne 25 years ago and it wasn't playable on a Nintendo console until it was ported to the Switch back in 2019? I don't know if the majority of Nintendo players, both old or new have any knowledge or nostalgia attached to FFIX, it's not like people wanted Zidane or Vivi to be playable on Super Smash Bros.
I mean, I'm sure a Final Fantasy IX remake would be a multiplatform title, but would be a Nintendo-oriented title despite having more history with the PSOne? Or is it because out of all of the PS FF games IX is the one that's more influenced by the first 6 FF games that came out on Nintendo consoles and Square-Enix has released more games inspired on old-school FF on Nintendo consoles like FF: Four Heroes of Light, Bravely Default and Second and Octopath Traveller and for that reason a FFIX remake would be a better fit for Nintendo, especially because of its cartoony and colorful artstyle?

Either they want to reveal it coming to all consoles instantly to not cause any costumer confusion and revealing this title to be runable on the Switch 2 would be a big no no for Nintendo given that they want to present the systems graphical capabilities. Not some 3rd party remake title half a year in advance.
That or maybe they feel like IX could benefit from that DQ energy or oldschool FF and/or cartoony shit generally just works well on Nintendo consoles like you said. They might also have some console exclusive stuff going for the Switch 2 perhaps they are tight lipped about.
Either way I never really could recall a game being announced only for a competitor revealing their console and then for the game publisher to retroactively announce ‘oh yeah we’re releasing on that console come launch too’ although I bet there are some examples.
Another idea is that FF9R is a launch title for the Switch 2 first and foremost. So the game is announced and the release date is revealed congruently with the Switch 2. Then it would make more sense to wait for that reveal too instead of it being a happy coincidence after the fact.
I find more fault and questionmarks with Nintendo for waiting so stupidly long. Its reaching GTA levels and I bet the reason is equally stupid just like Rockstar. Something about them wanting one more holiday round of sales for the Switch. It’s so dumb. Also makes me wonder why they couldn’t just have the console ready for this holiday. Unless they reveal now and the release is literally next year November lol. Which would be insane.

DQ12 is probably near completion actually. They've been working on it for 5 years now, with planning stages started in late 2016 and early 2017. They were already hiring out for DQ12 in late 2019, so that's when the project went into full development with a completed story and scenario, and the base prototype for their new battle engine worked out and ready to go into full development. When it was announced in 2021, it was already in full development.
DQ12 they're probably doing fine tuning etc. and want everything core completed prior to 2026, as May 27th, 2026 is the 40th anniversary, and 10 years out from when DQ11 was first released in Japan for the 30th Anniversary. That would fit perfectly with a proper send-off to Akira Toriyama and Koichi Sugiyama, as both men completed their work for the game prior to their passing. Horii has also mentioned he wants to make 12 a homage to the original trio of him and his late friends and compatriots.
So I fully expect the core game is already completed and would be ready to go except for any extras, series homages/callbacks/easter eggs like DQ9's Legacy bosses and Inn guests, or DQ11's Tickington.

    'Quality over quantity'
It was the failure or only mild success of some of their AAA games that got them in this situation in the first place! It just seems like doubling down on that. And it means a bunch of IPs are going to go dormant again so they can pump out more FF and DQ or something. That doesn't sound good to me.
Like, some of these games took many years and cost a ton. Like Forespoken. That WAS a AAA game like they're describing and it flopped. Spending even more time and money on it probably wouldn't have helped.
They released a ton of AA games way too close together to properly market them or let them breathe. Not to mention doing it in the fall when other big games usually hit. That was a faiure to properly coordinate their releases.
1 AAA game... like Forespoken? Like, this new plan won't magically make all their releases good. That quality is not assured. Fewer, bigger games just makes for more feast or famine. No chance of surprise hits. And flops like Forespoken hurt even more.
I hope we get remasters or whatever of 9 and T. But it's been so long, I dunno....

I mean, they basically were competing against themselves while also failing to market any of their games. But, the games are worth making, and worth owning and playing for fans. Not everything needs to be a AAA-sized game that takes 5 years to make and SE is (was?) one of the only companies left that seemed to understand that there's value in the smaller scope experimentation (and platform support).
I just hope this doesn't mean they are going to take that away. Can't think of owning a Switch 2 or PS5 someday without the support of SE, tbh (especially with PS5 being where they are almost exclusively the only developer giving the console any game support at all). Square not hitting sales expectations with XVI and VII Rebirth was all their own doing though. They decided "Hey we're going to do console exclusivity with Sony again." and it isn't like it didn't work with Remake as that helped sell plenty of PS4's back in the day...however PS5's were scarce due to scalpers, not to mention by the time XVI and VII rebirth released anyone who owned one got one already. People are also taking more and more to PC gaming, why buy a console that'll be replaced in a couple of years when you can build a PC that will last you longer and out perform those consoles? Free online gaming, multiple store fronts, emulation, has keyboard and mouse support I could go on but you get my point. Square's execs are not following the current trends and are instead chasing instant profits with console exclusivity rights. I get it, FFVII and Final Fantasy as a whole have been a sony main stay for years. All the way up to FFXII. But XIII showed (despite it's mid reviews) that a final fantasy game can do well on other platforms. Square just walked backwards with XVI and VII Remake trilogy. I hope they stop this, because those employees did not deserve to be let go because of bungling from the top.

Square Enix games despite their quality in the past decade have been financial flops, but most of them have been great games that just haven't met expectations or haven't sold at all. They've been the pinnacle of development from RPG publishers.
In 2022, despite the poor sales people focus on Platinum games developed Babylon's Fail, Forspoken, and Foamstars. Even a blind deaf person could have told you that this microtransaction shovelware garbage would fail, this same person would tell you that absolutely no one has any interest in Forspoken. Were they even following up with the developers of these games to see what was being developed?
However, the amount of good games developed in 2022 was pretty significant and the problem was that a lot of games didn't sell regardless of quality. Now I absolutely could write a book on it all, but for brevity, outside of the trash that I mentioned above, the worst game and it's still a decent game at the very least, was Valkyrie Elysium. It was just a rough game at the start with the depth of this poor man's DMC combat locked behind weapon levels that you'd acquire as you progress.
Square Enix though developed some absolutely amazing games in 2022 and two of them are some of my favorite games in their respective genres. Crisis Core and Tactics Ogre Reborn. These were not just remasters of classic action RPGs and TRPGs, but pseudo remakes of these games where they took the core games and completely reworked their combat systems, fixing all of the issues that these games had, making Crisis Core a substantially better game and literally perfecting Tactics Ogre Reborn(it is one of the few TRPGs deserving of a 10/10.)
This even extended into 2023 with many other games great lower budget games that were pseudo remakes of previous games. There was definitely not a Forspoken or Foamstars for every Octopath Traveler 2, etc.
Now you mentioned Atlus and I'll even pull Falcom into the conversation because people love circle jerking over these developers now, now that they've become popular. Go play any SMT, SMT spinoff, or Persona game, and then go play another one. There's one distinction that can be made with the games and that's the progression of all these games are identical, the gameplay itself is near identical. Now this is in the last decade of course, but aside from the calendar bs and the slight variation on combat like the one more, press turn, baton pass, the demon combo system, sabbath system, etc, etc, etc, etc, the fundamental core combat is identical and these games are honestly the same game with a different coat of paint. Or is there even a different coat of paint when Soul Hackers 2 is more or less a bad SMT Nocturne that they may as well have just remade SMT Nocturnes with modernn graphics and it'd have been a far better experience. SMT5 is just a worse SMT Nocturne. Persona 5 is just a worse SMT Nocturne with a calendar system just to waste the players time playing an 80 hour game that realistically should have ended 60 hours prior. You get the idea.
Well, Falcom is the exact same, because just play any of these 83.5 Trails games released in the past two years and you'll have played them all. 98% of the storyline is fluff while a whole two percent is actually relevant. The combat system on every single game is identical for the past 15-20 years except that each game has some sort of mechanical quirk that makes the overall difference very subtle.
These companies are just giving us a rehash of the same game year after year after year after year, and then when they don't give us the same game, when they are like, here, here's a more modern Ys game, and then they give us another, and then another and then Ys8 just blows us away with quality, Falcom then takes that good will and takes a dump on it all, but shoving all this drivel down our throat. The padding included in Ys10 is obnoxious. If you want to talk about a bad game, Ys10 is a bad game. Valkyrie Elysium may not be a Crisis Core or Final Fantasy 7 Remake, but Ys10 is an even worse game. So I'll leave you with this remark, my opinion, is that most people have sh** taste and good games don't always sell. Atlus actually released a different style of game in a long while with Persona 5 Tactica and that game failed to sell any reasonable amount. For once it's not the same game again and again and people just ignore it... well, sortof, it is still Persona 5, but it's a TRPG.

FF7 Rebirth, FF16, Dragon Quest 3, Visions of Mana, Octpath Traveler 2, Tactics Ogre, Live a Live, Triangle Stategy since 2022
Are the Saga games and Star Ocean games good. Never played on but that could be on the list.
People focus on the bad too much now a days, Square has put out plenty of bangers over the recent years. Gamers just don't buy single player games anymore. Oh you can think of 5 games over the past 3 years that sold, let me change my opinion ;)
Oh just make good games, I'm sure Square hadn't thought of that.

The fact that it took them this long to get into the mentality of quality over quantity shows how moronic their leadership is overall. Atlus and RGG release a few games every few years and they sell like crazy cause they're actually good games. Take Persona 3 Reload and Like a Dragon infinite wealth as an example for both. Took a bit to come out but they sold well. Now RGG has a Majima game in Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii as a Gaiden type game like the Kiryu game was before infinite wealth came out. I dont have to worry about RGG putting out a stinkfest like square enix does

You know im sad im older and I don't have time to play these smaller SE games like visions, valkyrie elisium, dio chronicles and the new saga game. Even of those game end up not being great it reminded me of the PS2 era where there tons of jrpgs.

Personally, I pretty like Diofield Chronicles but the story and RPG elements could have been work out better. What Square is doing is very similar to what Marvel is doing for their TV shows and Movies. Put out less and put more much better quality stuff.

Kingdom Hearts is literally killing itself off as a franchise with these extremely long dev times. time between Dream Drop Distance and KH3 was 6 years, and now the distance between KH3 and KH4 has been 6 years and counting. Thats over a decade since the tail end of the classic Kingdom Hearts games and nearly 2 decades since KH2. They made a massive mistake not just starting afresh with Verum Rex/Versus XIII, because there won't be any KH fans left when KH4 comes out.
