  • The FV101 Scorpion is a type of British armored reconnaissance vehicle that played a key role in the Combat Vehicle Reconnaissance Tracked or CVR(T) series of seven armored vehicles. Produced by Alvis and introduced into service with the British Army in 1973, it was active until 1994, serving as a fire support type and lead vehicle. Over 3,000 Scorpions were produced for British Army and Royal Air Force and utilized as either a reconnaissance vehicle or a light tank. So, what makes this older vehicle significant or relevant to be featured into today’s episode?

I wasnt aware that the Scorpion still existed, i was under the impression the Scimitar had replaced it. You used to see Scorpion's on the roads in civilian ownership when they were sold off cheaply. There used to be a scrap dealer in Brixton who used to drive around in a pink Scorpion as an advertisement for his business.

It has to be very careful in ground that other vehicles have traversed and churned up though as its ground clearance is so low that it can belly out leaving the tracks in the air, towed one out after this very situation. Falklands wasnt as soft as people made out either. Same ground from San Carlos to Stanley was traversed by the local in tractors or ex mil 1 tonne landrovers and even a 4 tonner with an extra set of wheels on the back axel. More likely is the Scorpion was taken as it was so small it didnt take up much space in the fleet and still had enough fun to take on anything on the islands or act in fire support

I did trials on the Scorpion newly fitted with the 30mm Radon cannon. We put 3 rounds through a jerry can at 2 miles away! Armour piercing special effects! When fire is selected, you send off three rounds. These vehicles were used as a recon screen for BAOR in the 70's, early 80's. They have a road speed of nearly 60 mph. It's worth mentioning the British Army's late-life replacement of the 76 mm turret with 30 mm RARDEN turrets taken from the Fox armoured car. One reason for this was the noxious release of fumes into the fighting compartment after a 76 mm firing - the gun had no fume extractor.
Many of the shots in the clip show RARDEN-reequipped vehicles , or else Scimitars - Scimitar was the Scorpion variant that was built with a RARDEN turret from the outset. The 30 mm gun fires six-round bursts, and I read a very long time ago that its capability to penetrate armour is 'quite remarkable' (for a low- calibre weapon, obviously).

No mention of the numerous drawbacks of that old thing. Not such a great journalistic job. IMO, it's nice to know all about the vehicle, not just what's agood about it.
For those who'd like to know, the crew compartement fills with (toxic) fumes when the gun is fired, the heat signature is stupid and the traversse mechanism is manual (and that sucks so much when you're in battle!). Plus of course the fact that the hull is soft like butter. But of course, other armed recon vehicles are also pretty bad on that last thing, so it's not like there's tons of other choices. But yeah, they're cheap for a reason those Scorpions. But I guess the Ukrainians will take something over nothing and I can't blame them.

All well and good, but, the Britsh Army got rid of Scorpion nearly 30 years ago due to Toxicity issues and NATO-Soviet Treaties as the Scorpion could be classed as a Tank!
    Roger so far?
Then the sly Brits removed the 76mm TURRETS and replaced them with the FOX wheeled CVR(W) Turrets and called them Sabre.
So there are very few 76mm Scorpions anywhere other than maybe in Foreign Armies or even from Southern Ireland?
There are also 90mm versions with the Cockerill Turrets in Malaysia?
What you are probably referring to are the turretless versions that have already been sent to Ukraine and are APC´s or Liason versions?
On this video the first vehicles were the Abbot with 105mm Cannons and Scimitar with 30mm Rarden Cannons.
    This video is basically Bullshit!
Even the Scimitar 2´s have been sold off from the British Army.
As for the swimming part, I was on the river crossing that was a fiasco and 6 Months later the wading skirts were removed, and that was about 1978, and the engine decks are Aluminium as well so that a mere mortal can remove them as needed!
So just call this video a waste of time and our nerves!
They have Spartan FV 103 Variants which have been of great use!
