So here I am 75 miles from home and I had to go up the hill in the snow and pull barn doors off a parts truck and figure out how to install them so I can go home without all my tools and crap flying out of the back. I figured it out but it wasn't easy, of three layers of metal in the door frame only one has holes for the hinge bolts. I got a good 40,000 miles out of it though, beat the crap out of it, towed in one instance 7500 lbs behind it, drove it until the driver's front rocker panel was totally gone. Then I pulled the motor and trans to go in a '50 Chevy. The replacement for it was like this one, a 1991, it too had some rust but not as bad. It had 159,000 on it when I got it and it was tired, the guy had been using it to tow a big 8600 lb boat. Even then I drove it all over. The TBI 350 will run about forever if you maintain it. That one I only stopped driving because I got a van. The guy who bought it just wanted the interior out of it, the seats, dash, tilt column, power stuff, to go into a pickup. I also had a 1985 with the 6.2 I got cheap with a bad trans, parted out another one for a diesel 700R4, but never put it together. Which, the correct transmission for this is a 700R4. Whim he kicks in that factory engine on that lark it makes some sweet music. Kinda sounds German turbo ish. Good luck with your wagon
Nice old thing, wears the mileage well. If I had it I'd get that bonnet (hood) resprayed, try and source the missing external trim bits and then just drive it. Awesome.
We have a 2005 suburban. Not only is the rust much worse on ours, but in the past 3 months the a/c needed fixed, the windshield seal was leaking, it needed new brake lines, rotors, pads, etc. Not the best for maintenance costs.
While I do give every good car the fair chance of having a new owner and life. If they sit around here too long without being rescued eventually they will end up on that big highway in the sky .... it’s sad but it’s true. As a big car guy , I’m ashamed of some of the things I’ve had to crush...
Since 1990 going off the combined MPG on the window sticker 14mpg, with 338000 miles on it that thing has burned 24,143 gallons of fuel. Between 1990 and now the average fuel cost would be about $1.50. So approximately $36,125 has been spent to drive that thing around....neat!
Being 1of 7 kids, the suburban was the family vehicle growing up. We had an ‘84 1/2 ton 2WD with a 350 and then a ‘90 3/4 ton 2WD with the 454, and both had front bench and flip-down tail gate with the electric window instead of the “barnyard doors”. I learned to drive on the 454.
My dad has a 98 sierra 2500 that he bought new in 98. Over 300k miles pulling horse trailers up and down the mountain and it still runs great. Hes got 2 porche 911's and an 80s 944, aswell as a brand new cayenne. He still drives the truck everywhere
The flip down tailgate with the roll down window had problems. The window got stuck when rolling it up. The barnyard doors were the solution in the rear.
@@UsefulEntertainment yep don't know what's wrong with those dam Texans scrapping classics. I'm a Floridian born and raised. I can guarantee you that we dont do that.....Well mainly because there just aren't that many classics like there are here in Texas.😄
This is how I found my '90 GMC 4x4 1500 Suburban. It had been donated to the local Goodwill. Peeling white paint, crash damage to the passenger front door, flat front tire, 224k on the odometer. It was love at first sight. I took it all apart and had it repainted in Dupont Nason Urethane, in the original white. Scoured the local wrecking yard and purchased a couple rear seats, and took the fabric off them right there in the yard, because that's all I wanted. Had the broken front seats welded and then reupholstered in the original gray material. Added a small tach, trailer brake controller, trans temp gauge, giant B&M finned aluminum trans pan, and matching 11x11 external trans cooler. Converted the a/c (front and rear) to 134a and fixed the inoperative dash flaps. Upgraded to a Delco stereo that takes a CD and has a 5 band EQ, and set it back down on a set of white letter Generals in the stock size. That was 2005 and I still have it. It's been the family road trip machine, ski trip machine (with cables on all 4 wheels when sh!t got serious), kid hauler, and as our child got into high school sports, it became a team vehicle for the XC and Track teams for 4yrs, because we could a total of 9 in it. It hauls the camper, the car tow dolly, and a regular car trailer. Ultimately I did upgrade the original 4L60 with a customer built version, but the engine is original, now with 308k on it. Quiet, smooth, powerful enough, and will get 17mpg out on the highway, if I keep the speed down. Just a big ol' steel box and I still enjoy every minute I get to drive it.
A family friend of ours had this exact truck. I remember riding in it as a kid whenever my dad needed to borrow a truck to haul stuff. Awesome clean truck!!

all those parts work on 73-87 chevy pickup trucks and up to 91 on suburbans and blazers. so if nobody buys it to drive it someone will want the parts. i put those same front bucket seats and center console in my 78 c10 stepside.
A friend of ours had one of these. It would go down the freeway all day long pulling a trailer at 75 to 80 MPH. It was a 4 wheel drive with the bullet proof 350 V8. The transmission was another story. The transmission had to be overhauled every 85 000 miles to avoid breakdown. Then the transfer case for the 4 wheel drive had to be rebuilt.
Man I would love to have that Burb. Mother had two back in the 90s, Cream and orange and a dark metallic purple one. She always took good care of it, purple one was bought new in the early 90s. Brings back so many memories.
That electric rear window on these suburbans is probably the coolest and most memorable feature on these. The most forgettable thing about these suburbans is the gas mileage. LOL.
The electric rear window was problematic, and got stuck when rolling it up. The gas mileage was about 10 to 12 miles to the gallon on the highway as I remember with the 5.7 350 V8. If you chose the 454 V8 gas mileage was even less. Load it down, and pull a trailer, and the gas mileage dropped even more.
I have a 1994, barn doors 4x4, 350 a/c, roof rack, 3 seats, 139k. Everything works, and it aint worth "two bits" except to me. I'm keepin it, cause you never know when six friends will need a ride somewhere!
Built back when GM actually made decent cars and trucks. These things would run forever. My grandfather had a late 80s version with the diesel engine in it for as long as I can remember. Id say 15-20 years maybe more.

The mechanics told me it was a one ton rather than just a 3/4 ton, 350 fuel injected engine, dual set of batteries, front 3500 lb wench, can be removed and inserted in the rear...manuel windows, heater/air condition all work. I still have it and love it to pieces...keep it garaged when not in use, which is seldom, unless I need power. I got a 78 shot bed . The old 250 is shot and the 3 on the tree is loose and worn out. I been thinking about swapping on out in it. A i6 will our lug a big v8!on a long mountain on the highway. It goes slower down the other Side as well. I want something to work that truck in some firewood cutting, and to pull a trailer with . I want to get a 5 speed out of a 3/4 ton truck a 5 speed . Idk about the turbo yet but maybe some day . I also been looking around for a old 2.8 5speed comero or firebird to do a swap in. Whim he kicks in that factory engine on that lark it makes some sweet music. Kinda sounds German turbo ish. Good luck with your wagon
Cool truck! It must be saved.
What a beauty! I'm all over in the UK and love watching these. Wish I was over there to buy some of them!
dude I would never scrap such a perfectly good working car
Seems to run and drive fine, put a drivers Seat in it and sell it
That makes me miss my old 89 suburban body looks pretty clean on that one
Don’t crush this gem. This really is classic; paint it detail it and keep it
Nice old thing, wears the mileage well.
NO WAY ARE YOU CRUSHING THAT
Watch the whole vid 3/4 the way thru he said it's for sale
While I do give every good car the fair chance of having a new owner and life. If they sit around here too long without being rescued eventually they will end up on that big highway in the sky .... it’s sad but it’s true. As a big car guy , I’m ashamed of some of the things I’ve had to crush...
Jay Smart is it still for sale?
Jay Smart can you post a video of car crushing
Since 1990 going off the combined MPG on the window sticker 14mpg, with 338000 miles on it that thing has burned 24,143 gallons of fuel. Between 1990 and now the average fuel cost would be about $1.50. So approximately $36,125 has been spent to drive that thing around....neat!
How much I need another one I own 2 now I'll come pick it up
I got a 1990 high top for sale lol

@@taxfreefamiliac.e.o8631 ya so does mine
These get scrapped often here in North Texas. Seen some real nice ones in the yard

That thing is solid weres the rust at? If that were in Wisconsin it would have rusted away by now.
Agreed. And if it were in the UK he wouldn't be driving it, he'd be sweeping it up with a dustpan.
Very true
A family friend of ours had this exact truck. I remember riding in it as a kid whenever my dad needed to borrow a truck to haul stuff. Awesome clean truck!!

Wow that’s pricey! This one is going by the road for $1,500! Clean title !

all those parts work on 73-87 chevy pickup trucks and up to 91 on suburbans and blazers. so if nobody buys it to drive it someone will want the parts. i put those same front bucket seats and center console in my 78 c10 stepside.
It's sad to see a suburban in that good of shape in the junkyard
GM made the BEST v8 engines of all time, these things were bullet proof, i love them
A friend of ours had one of these.
That would make a very interesting CarFax report.because of the very high miles
As if miles alone are interesting?? Single owner never in a major accident, wow how exciting...
That's a pretty sweet suburban indeed. Great bones to build off from there. Impressed 😎

Man yall get some of the coolest old school stuff awsome
1990, the year I graduated.. starting to feel old
Absolutely needs to be saved! What a straight and solid Suburban! Ready for another 330k miles!
GM cars in 1990 save it from the Caprice and the B bodies were something you would just get away from
Glad to hear this one isn't headed to the scrap heap. That thing looks new underneath! You need to advertise these gems up north here in the rust belt, they'll probably get snapped up quick.

A few years ago bought a 1990 Suburban 2500 Forestry truck. Went thru the ball joints; gave it a great and expensive tuneup. I think I paid around $1500...bargin in todays world. 2 wheel, manual transmission with compound low. Nothing fancy, built for woods and hairy assed rangers.
Jay sure sounds great for a 338,000 mile vehicle. Someone has taken pretty good care of it.
Doesn't look like it from the outside.
Faded paint isn’t always owner neglect, I know most of those old s10s from the same era lost their clear coat 4 years out of the factory. But a good respray would have this thing looking sharp!

I have a 1993 Suburban that I bought last year from the original owners. The lady that had it before I did was a teacher and so it mainly just took her back and forth to work. It's in really good condition considering its age and I don't think I'd ever want one of the newer 2005+ models. GM has gone to shit the last few years.
The 2005+ GM trucks are still better than the 1997+ Ford trucks.
I don't understand why anyone would scrap something so nice... you guys don't know how good you have it outside the rust belt.

That one should not be crushed it should be sold and put back on the road. In Wellsburg NY close to the PA boarder sits a panel box truck for sale. The guy sold one and has one left. They belonged to the guy that owned Lewis mail he passed away and his son is selling off his trucks. The one he has left he wants $3500.00 for it it runs good it has very little rust on the cab and box panel the brakes and tires are good on it the gas tank is in good shape the windshield wipers work the windshield is in good shape. Where it sits it will be easy to drive out. At $3500.00 there is plenty of room for a profit at auction a used panel box truck can easily sell for $5000.00 to $6000.00 or a farmer but it and use it as a farm truck. Sincerely Robert Gildea
