  • The long whip-like stock NC MX-5/ Miata antenna makes the car look like a remote controlled toy.
Not only that but the thing has tried to poke my eye out several times!
There are aftermarket short antennas to easily and quickly replace them such as the stubby and the cone. But what if you don't even want the 2 or 3 inches of antenna sticking out?
What if you never use the radio anyway? For that, you delete the antenna altogether! And I did it for under $5 with a few bits from my local hardware store.

Would you rather this? Or spend the extra $$$ for a proper stubby antenna?

I assume your radio no longer works, but if you do not listen to over the air stuff you do not care,

Yeah... haven't listened to the radio even once. Always streaming music from my phone... so I thought what the heck. I do still carry my original antenna in the trunk though just in case I need to use the radio. It takes up no space at all... and is less likely to poke me in the eye 😆

Why not take the whole antenna base out and plug the hole if you don't like the look? You obviously do not use your radio anymore.

I initially wanted to but when I had a look in the trunk, I couldn't see or feel any bolts or screws holding the antenna base in place. So, decided to go with the less risky option. Good thing is I still carry around the original antenna in the trunk just in case of an emergency and when I need to use the radio - I'm in Japan after all.

Plug the hole? You make it sound so easy. That's body shop work with painting to finish it up. Not easy. Not cheap. And it's permanent. Maybe someday something might happen on terrestrial radio that you want to hear. I use a 1.5 inch stub antenna as a replacement that has no reception. I have another antenna in my trunk if the unforeseen happens and I need terrestrial radio. This bolt/washer idea is the best though. If he sold them, I'd buy one of his packages right away.
