Nice video Doug! There is an old saying "A good craftsman never blames his tools", which when you think about it more is really deep. For the master craftsman no matter what he may be lacking, he can always make it, or make up for it with ingenuity.

Ba ha! I knew there was "no way" you would have just let that clamp go! But I do love the creativity of your "not so modern version" Seems to work great & the upgrade with the bit of pipe is a great idea too (I honestly figured the rope wasn't going to last long anyway 😉) At the end of the day, it's the thought process that we are lacking today, I love how you are challenging everyone to get back those skills! Great Stuff! 👍

I get making things work in a pinch but there is nothing like having the right tools for the job. Thats the difference between me in my 20's and me now in my 50's. Back then I had a hammer and a pipe wrench. Today I have a garage full of tools I've only used once for their expected purpose and then had to adapt them to do the tasks I still dont have the proper tool for.

If you get two pieces of wood, and a roll of bailing wire you can cut corrugated metal roofing by laying it on a length of the wire (it’s attached to one piece of the board) grab the other board with the other end of the wire attached, stand on the metal roofing sheet and pull up. The wire will cut through the roofing and works great for both length and width cuts. No snips or shears needed.

Hey you know how you lost stuff off the sea edge the rail-mounted work table?
Bore 2 holes in the table deck of it at the rail end. Then fit a removeable vertical board with a 3 inch upstand (and maybe 6 inches wider than the table deck) with two rods on the back of it to catch things as she rolls.
Lifts off when you need a flat table and you attach it with a loose chain so it doesn't get lost when not in use. Kinda like a big removeable fettle.
Doubles as a shotgun/rifle rest for Horn of Africa and Malacca Straits :)
I lost a damn good old Milwaukee off a table like that when a prop bearing suddenly chewed and the vibes joggled it off while I went to the wheelhouse to shut her off.

Perfect Idea for a clamp. Love it!
is this the genesis for the 'back when people had to use their brains' series? I hope so!
there is an ancient little town near me named Greenwich that hosts a 'olden days' themed crafts fairs every year around the end of spring and early fall.
they have cool things like lathes made with a small living tree for the spring, metal and glass working, and stuff that is generally lost to modern times.
I always see something new or interesting in the forgotten ways.
being near the major rivers here, mayhaps you could visit it one day. (39.3899° N, 75.3383° W)
I really like to see the ingenuity that people can come up with to solve problems and get things done.
read about how they used that design philosophy on the Voyager probes to wring every last nano-ounce of usefulness out of those master pieces of engineering.
the only thing you missed was the obvious opportunity to use a 'the more you know' clip.
Sail on, Sail on Sailor and Bon Voyage.
