"Trickin Pickin" performed by Doug Waterman
Remember when you dropped the most awesome clamp in the bay as you were making a video about it? THAT WAS AWESOME
the second that went overboard. I said out loud - "he has a something tied to it", cuz as ingenous as you may be with rope and a peice of wood, I KNOW you wouldn't sacrifice one of those diomide clamps just to make a point on youtube...
Time for some magnet fishing, that's big on UA-cam!
The rope clamp is great. It’s so fast. Thanks, Doug.
Doug, you are the best. Thank you for sharing your bitter and sarcastic wisdom.
I appreciate that.
Having worked on my yacht at sea many times I know all about dropping tools over the side. Fishing magnet might be good investment.
Magnet off the back of a speaker might be cheaper.
@@ronnronn55 nothing really compares to modern neodymium magnets. Speaker magnets are usually ferrite. I bought a 200kg 48 mm magnet with eye for rope for £3.99 about 5 USD on eBay.
Nice video Doug! There is an old saying "A good craftsman never blames his tools", which when you think about it more is really deep. For the master craftsman no matter what he may be lacking, he can always make it, or make up for it with ingenuity.
I really liked the message you imparted to the youth of this nation and beyond.
You made me laugh. Every day is a new day for a bright idea.
Ba ha! I knew there was "no way" you would have just let that clamp go! But I do love the creativity of your "not so modern version" Seems to work great & the upgrade with the bit of pipe is a great idea too (I honestly figured the rope wasn't going to last long anyway 😉) At the end of the day, it's the thought process that we are lacking today, I love how you are challenging everyone to get back those skills! Great Stuff! 👍
you taught us to be skeptical of what you do
Absolutely. And you might as well include humanity in general. : )
I get making things work in a pinch but there is nothing like having the right tools for the job. Thats the difference between me in my 20's and me now in my 50's. Back then I had a hammer and a pipe wrench. Today I have a garage full of tools I've only used once for their expected purpose and then had to adapt them to do the tasks I still dont have the proper tool for.
Ture, but show me a better tool for the the job than that rope and board. Sometimes that tool "in a pinch" is better that anything on the market. : )
Often the right tool is the one in your hand right now.
As always, inspirational.
Thanks Doug....
Words of wisdom from Doug
Yep good thing is the locker some times gives back what others has lost.
you're a goddamn genius, gump!
LOL "To do whatever you tell me to do drill sergeant."
Had me Doug I almost jumped in after it!!!
I was like...he didn't seemed to mad about that!😂
@@mariner3He has scuba gear and it might not be all that deep there is what I figured.
@KnightsWithoutATable I seen he had some red cord tied to it to retrieve it!
Your improvised rope/pedal clamp was actually quicker to use. Fun video!
This would be a great time to deploy the custom built ROV you built to
recover that clamp. ( may want to put a recovery line on the ROV to be safe )
A bit of overkill, when goggles will do. : )
Or an attache lanyard haha. Good one. What is the status of that cool looking ROV you were working on?@@SVSeeker
@@Bill23799 Still on the list of many things. Storage crates first.
Just ordered 2 Dimide clamps- one is a present for brother in law
This is a great life lesson! When in doubt, step on it!
love it
Yes sir. You are correct about that!
I can't tell you how many times in my life the "correct" tool for the job hasn't worked at all for it's intended use for me and I've had to make my own tools for the job. A cheap welder, a grinder, and some angle iron from old bed frames has saved my behind more than all the specialty tools I've ever used combined. It's a shame what public schools have taken from people...
Nicely done on the foot clamp.
Thanks
If you get two pieces of wood, and a roll of bailing wire you can cut corrugated metal roofing by laying it on a length of the wire (it’s attached to one piece of the board) grab the other board with the other end of the wire attached, stand on the metal roofing sheet and pull up. The wire will cut through the roofing and works great for both length and width cuts. No snips or shears needed.
Great video Doug!
Thanks!
a little sandpaper or roughing on the surface of the ring (end of video) would probably be good too. This is my favorite kinda Seeker video. Thank you.
I like it. The only thing I'm not crazy about is the unstable leading foot. Possible upgrade would be to use bungee cord so you can stomp on it with your full weight and plant your foot while still applying holding force.
But hey, the point of the video was "good enough", not "ideal". Bravo.
You got me lol, when I backed it up I see the rope but who notices a bit of rope on a sailboat? Lol. I really like the rope clamp, that's better than either of the others for this purpose
Better and faster!
Bravo great video
Hey you know how you lost stuff off the sea edge the rail-mounted work table?
Bore 2 holes in the table deck of it at the rail end. Then fit a removeable vertical board with a 3 inch upstand (and maybe 6 inches wider than the table deck) with two rods on the back of it to catch things as she rolls.
Lifts off when you need a flat table and you attach it with a loose chain so it doesn't get lost when not in use. Kinda like a big removeable fettle.
Doubles as a shotgun/rifle rest for Horn of Africa and Malacca Straits :)
I lost a damn good old Milwaukee off a table like that when a prop bearing suddenly chewed and the vibes joggled it off while I went to the wheelhouse to shut her off.
Doug Try putting some candle wax on the flap disc. The wax prevents build up on the disc. Any candle will do and they can smell nice too. :)
Wax also screws up the weld
It's like teaching people the skill of critical thinking. Watching the news today makes one think it is a dieing art.
My father taught me this trick to hold down odd pieces of stone while sculpting.that plus an assortment of sand bags I still use everyday.
I thought you were creating the UA-cam giveaways challenge. The first one to find the clamp, wins! 😂
Next time!
F style clamps are the best because you can tighten it and release it by hitting the bar with the screw with a hammer. very useful when trying to bend a 2x4 in 4 different directions you can just walk it in by hitting the clamps. hit the backside and it quick releases
So THAT'S what all the holes are for in the fancy nerdy welding tables
I was hoping you were playing around about that clamp because that would have been kind of wasteful😂 you got me at the end when you brought it back up
Not only is it a creative fix, but that rope clamp unclamps and clamps faster than any of the more expensive 'fancy' clamps... a little thinking and prep work reduces the time to work the actual job.
fun video and great message safe travels
Thanks so much
That was awesome, Doug! LMAO 🤣
JA JA JA JA....Your a breath of fresh air.
Adapt overcome that is why I Love these videos life often throws us a curve ball and we need to figure out another way to do something.
A litt'l Sumpt'in for the haters and the lovers!
Lovely video! I'd have dived in among sharks to retrieve that thing..
Your rope 'n foot clamp reminds of a woodworker's shaving horse. Perhaps that clamping action can be adapted for metal/all purpose clamping.
I was helping my friend replace his show valve. I let him do the work while instructing him. When it came to cutting the copper pipe without a clamp he really struggled. I gave him some tips that he didn't take well. In the end I ended up finishing the cut. It's interesting to me how it's not easy to see what are the important parts are.
Just takes practice
Ok ok that IS the coolest clamp
In germany this is called "Bauernschläue" , the "Farmersclevernes" . As a lot of farmers in the past did not have a high grade of studies, but they had to imporvise a lot and think arround the corners to get their Job done.
In Afrikaans we have much the same saying 'Boer maak 'n plan!' (Farmer makes a plan)..improvise with what you have
The ol organ pedal clamp! 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻
Thanks for the laugh, Doug!
I want to be just like Doug !
...but smarter and better looking. : )
The power of the beard!
Classic Doug, Happy early April fools!!!
No need to wait for April to find the fools. : )
I made some clamps out of 2 pieces of wood a long bolt and a wingnut.
Do you have the tool to swim down and get the tools you've dropped in the bay? Glad you had some forethought on the clamp safety line. I see a work bench out there with multiple holes for different size objects soon.
Yes I do!
I use vodka to elongate my chin. After the second bottle, it seems to work great.
you give us click proclivity and hook us on your creativity
Will you take the trouble to re check that weird email you received last summer to see if it may gives some more sense and purpose now? Take it lightly and some value will come out of it I promise.
At least you can make a video out of it,
for better or worse.
german born, australian raised, damn, i have those skills you spoke about , just saying, don't matter where you are from, you can be great , cheers Frank from
Downunder
One “Gripping” episode! Thanks
YES DAMN IT! I did think you dropped it… why you gotta hurt me like that… “c’mon, man!”
Lol
Tkzz for sharing.,.,.,peace
my kind of people !
careful- I remember the backlash from the last prank you pulled HAHAHAHAHA LOL
Came for the clamp, stayed for the lesson. Sometimes everything is what it is, sometimes everything is just a hammer. You decide.
Hi Doug - have you thought about a fiddle on the ocean side of your deck bench. 😊
I don’t want anything out there that makes the grinding bits bounce back my direction.
I saw a video where a guy hung an upside-down umbrella under his work over water to catch dropped parts. You might come up with a version that attaches to your outer bars.
It would be a sieve after a little grinding. : )
@@SVSeeker Then make it out of a welding blanket. You have to be able to use the things you have around, right?
My son got new roller skates for Christmas.
A week later he asked for new wheels for his skates. We said those are new skates shouldn't need new wheels. Skates cost $330 bucks in 1998 .
He said the new wheels have Precision in them and he could go faster 😂😂😂.
We still have fun with that hes 40 now
Hello from Siesta Key Florida
I had those but they had a key that when turned clamped them onto your shoes. : )
you did not do it I knew you would trick us. And your beard looks good.
Perhaps some lanyards for tools when working with them on deck? At least for the really useful, expensive, or hard to replace ones? Or just a short length of rope and some quick knots so the best clamp you ever had in your life doesn't turn into a coral reef seed.
When the tools expensive, and I’m working over the water, there is often a lanyard. Not just protect from drops, but so you can also you can set it down.
👍 now a dozen tubers are going to dive on your anchorage for that clamp. Lol
: ) Maybe they can clean the hull while they are down there.
Thought about magnetic fishing?
I prefer diving. : )
I'll use that idea one day. BTW, whatever happened to your neighbor Bart? Has he made it onto SV Seeker?
Would fiddle rails on the outboard side of that table help avoid that?
Sure, but I'm not want the grinding bit flying back my way. : )
Perfect Idea for a clamp. Love it!
is this the genesis for the 'back when people had to use their brains' series? I hope so!
there is an ancient little town near me named Greenwich that hosts a 'olden days' themed crafts fairs every year around the end of spring and early fall.
they have cool things like lathes made with a small living tree for the spring, metal and glass working, and stuff that is generally lost to modern times.
I always see something new or interesting in the forgotten ways.
being near the major rivers here, mayhaps you could visit it one day. (39.3899° N, 75.3383° W)
I really like to see the ingenuity that people can come up with to solve problems and get things done.
read about how they used that design philosophy on the Voyager probes to wring every last nano-ounce of usefulness out of those master pieces of engineering.
the only thing you missed was the obvious opportunity to use a 'the more you know' clip.
Sail on, Sail on Sailor and Bon Voyage.
How long would it take to put an edge rail around that plate you use to make things?
That's a great idea for sending all the grinding bit back at your face. : )
great rope idea. Hopefully I wont need to use it and can use my vices at the workshop. But you never know while traveling
I don't know. It's the fastest clamp I have ever used.
I like this video 📹 👌 ☺️
Thanks
0:37 next job… Putting a lip on the work table! Lol
Only if you like the grinding bit coming back to hit you in the face. : )
Man powered rope clamp? What kind of witchcraft is that?
I bought my first welder and variable speed angle grinder just this autumn, Im still learning so thanks for the tips Doug! Material holding and welding distortion is my biggest chalenge so far :)
I was so sure the grinder was going in the dip too.
No today
thats how a lot of old leather stitching clamps worked
You got me. I thought you did lose the clamp. haha.
OK, time for a fiddle on the outboard end of that rail-mounted work bench, LOL
.......G'day Doug,
I just sat here in disbelief. You are a horrible man but I love your videos.
Cheers and king regards,
Malcolm.
Hey, Doug... ya know, if you stand on the other side of your work bench, the grinder will fling your work piece onto the deck, instead of into the ocean... Oh... you don't want to clean up the grinding dust 😆
Spot on. : )
HAHAHA this was funny!
😂 down with his old pal, refrigerator.
Hahaha you had me there
Lol.great video
Is ROV working you could go look for your big clamp
i dunno y but for some reason people use boxes for thinking in. doug nice rope clamp /holdfast but you missed the easier and quicker option lol a few loops round the table and piece and a stick to twist the loops tight but i forgive you i guess thats an oragami box you built . thanks for the videos.
Do what works. And then make improvements.
Need to do some magnet fishing.
I prefer diving. : )
I bring you the 15.... whoops..10! 10 Commandments! I know you lost a good tool, but it did make me chuckle. Edit... the answer is, yes, yes I did.
Someone needs to take up magnet fishing 😂😂😂😂
goggles
Is it just me or did the rope clamp work faster than the mechanical clamps. Seemed to hold just as well too.
It is much faster. : )
Dangerous with a grinder lol, exactly what I was thinking. Safety first.
Hi Mom
what are the pallets for?
Storage Boxes ua-cam.com/video/mxDrNyCk04E/v-deo.html
That's one more thumb than usual
When the only tool you have is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail. Right?
Using your brain to solve problems is a dying art!
Sure seems to be. : )
