► PRO-JECT SPEAKER REVIEW: Pro-Ject SPEAKERBOX 5 S2 Review
Pro-Ject may not be known for their speakers but I have a feeling that’s about to change! The new Speakerbox 5 S2 speakers come in a variety of colors. We have the Satin Green finish. These are some of the best small speakers for music we’ve come across in a while. These small speakers are solid, made in Europe and won’t break the bank!

I know you've reviewed the LS50s and the Q750s but I'd love to see a review of the R3/7/11 series. I'm seriously considering them and love to hear your feedback!
@@pcfreakx Wish we could help you there but I doubt we'll ever get the R series. I've been asking KEF for anything out of that line for a couple years now and no luck.
@@KristiWright LAME. Thanks for the fast response Kristi. I'm a video/audiophile going on 30yrs and you guys are probably about the most well rounded reviewers I follow.
And whoever is doing the beautiful automated tracking shots is KILLING IT. Great video work.
@@pcfreakx Andrew films everything. He'll love that you didn't automatically assume it was me behind the camera. (inside joke) :)
Yes, some of us do watch all the way to the end. I really like Kristi's take very much. I also really like Andrew's perspective, with the result that both of you together do a wonderfully lovely job with your reviews. I thoroughly enjoy listening to you both in each video. Well done. Cheers!👍🙂
Thanks for talking about your old room vs new room and speakers being relative to each other in a consistent setting. Very important point.
Kristi and Andrew, I really enjoyed the discussion over room comparisons between the old house and new house. Thanks! You'll never hear me criticize your room for listening not being 100% perfect as my house's listening areas is embarrassingly imperfect with the wife's salt water tanks humming away. But it's home for us...so that's good enough for me! Personally, I can't imagine I'd ever want to listen to music in a "perfect" room where I can only listen to music and do nothing else with the room itself.
❤️
You 2 are the best, I always leave your vids with a smile on my face. I agree with the aesthetics of this speaker, very nice. Quality gear that looks good and at these prices is a trend that I hope never stops. ✌️
I have to say this is the first time ever that I have been moved leave a comment on any UA-cam channel. But I have to say I’m very impressed with your professionalism and yet laid back commentary. I feel Andrew always comes across very relatable never feeling like you talk down to your listeners. I also find that you and Kristi have great chemistry, I feel that she adds a unique balance to you show. I’m always so impressed on how you are able convey so well what’s to be expect from the product your reviewing. Also feel the editing and labeling always looks very professional. You guys really have something truly exceptional please keep it up. I can’t say thanks enough for the great content you provide.
We really appreciate you taking time to comment as it means a lot to us to know you found a home here! Please don't be a stranger in the comments.
Seems that lately there have been quite a few nice surprises in the speaker world that are on the "somewhat affordable" side of things. I've LOVED seeing this and these reviews. My Polk Reserve R600s just showed up today. I didn't think I needed the R700 due to the smaller size of my room (although I am sure I would have loved them!). I am AMAZED so far at how they sound and am like a kid on Christmas morning. The R600 is definitely big enough for me! Thank you for all the work you put into these reviews and helping us all find what will make us happy with the sound of OUR systems. I'm happy now. ;-) I'd be willing to bet that most of the 'hater' comments you get are from people that have paid WAY more for their systems (not that there's anything wrong with that) and just can't understand how someone can be happy for less money. lol. Thanks again for all you both do. LOVE the channel!
So glad to know you are enjoying your speakers, Jason!
I’ve seen a few reviews on the older model and even thiose people have been blown away with them and my budget is smaller than the new model so I’m swayed in getting them but on the older models, your review by the way helped me to pull the trigger on the project speaker box,Thankyou👍🏼
I love that speaker manufacturers are giving us more options as in colors too choose from thx guys ...
Holy crap!!! I haven’t looked at their website since I bought my turntable 2 years ago. and like you I had no idea they had an entire speaker and electronics line. I need to study this. Thanks for doing this review, this is very exciting.
Finally, someone's making an environmentally friendly green speakers, excellent review, thanks.
Great surprise to find that Project is now making speakers!
Another excellent video, you're fast becoming my go to place for such reviews
That green!!! 😍
As usual, killed this one. Completely off of my radar and now I'll be hunting for anyone that carries them locally (yeah, right...). Maybe a perfect upgrade for my office setup after I get tired of looking at the Kali LP-6's. And that's if I can drag myself away from these Lumina V's 😁
I watch all of the videos by you guys. Love the “and me” to the added tagline. Nice job. (Glad I don’t have to sell my R200’s). Keep up the good work.
❤
Fantastic and very helpful review, thanks!!
Love that you give the in room measurements. I think it is important to touch upon it. You give it just enough attention in the review. Thank you!
You are so welcome!
Stunning house!!! Love the aesthetics!!! Well done mate!!!
Awe, FABULOUS!
Perhaps the greatest gesture of affection a British person could show (we're largely repressed and find that kind of thing difficult) is to make, or buy, a person a cup of tea.... I'd LOVE to buy you both a cup of tea.... Lots of them!!! Thank you! 😁😁😁😁😁
Your reviews rock! Continue the good work!!!
Hi Andrew
Our new home being built has subtle green/white paint in the main living space, as well as soapstone kitchen countertops (with the excess soapstone accenting our fireplace) that also has green veins in it. So with that being said, I think we found our speakers to match our green aesthetic with a 2.1 living room system! 😄🤘 Thank you for bringing these to our attention!
Not a brand I’ve seen before. Love the finish. Excited that you have arendal in house!
Would these speakers work for a home theatre setup? I am thinking to get a Yamaha A2A/Y6A, a pair of these for fronts p, a subwoofer, then add surround speakers slowly over time as funds allow
I just want to thank you guys for this review. After rewatching over the weekend, I came across a brand new pair in walnut at £200! Obviously an insta buy.
I've only tried them for a couple of hours, but safe to say they are relagating my dali oberon 1s to 2nd system duty.
Many thanks. ❤
Nice review! I will add these to my mental list that I have kept for the last 50 years. I always feel that you guys do a great job of conveying how a product sounds to you. I have bought a number of items after you have reviewed them and I have not been surprised by anything despite my room being different to yours. Kristi don’t worry about the haters.
I like your attitude!
What amp would you recommend out of the three you tried/or any others?
The way I mostly rate speakers (for myself) is if it puts a smile on my face or those around, and it's been a flawless system so far. These seem to have lit that fire in you guys so couldn't be more thrilled for you guys. I'm more a Klipsch person over Linear (except in headphones for clarity) but would love to try these! Getting that Evo in Green asap!
You had me at green...lmao...seriously, I love the finish
Great video!! What would you prefer between the Pro-Ject and the Meta’s? How do they compare to one another?
Awesome review! Very informative and helpful and fun!
🤗
Glad you enjoyed it!
Green is my favorite color, too, Kristi. Blue comes next. Cool colors for me.
How's it play with DVD's, movies, tv?
And if ya would consider a center channel, what would ya suggest?
How do these compare to the Kanto YU passive?
Love the green. Wish other manufacturers would do more colors. Black and walnut are beyond passe. White still takes the award in my opinion, especially in a cool white room like yours.
I'm a KEF LS50 fan but these speakers sound like the ticket for their price point.
Well, that was a surprise! never even knew they made speakers, my interest is pricked cos I could do with some small stand mounters, great review guys,
Hi Andrew/Kristi. What is your opinion on the project debut carbon evo, besides the lovely green color?
Omg ,project doing speakers?!! I love the green!!!!!!!!
As a happy project turntable owner I would love to hear these! Definitely on my demo list.
GREEN!!!!!!!😲😆😆😍😍
Nice video... crazy good speaker. Buddy just bought a pair, added small sub and leak stereo receiver... nice
I’m speaker boxed in now 🙈 I swear the green got me too🙊
Hi andrew? I have waited for the longest time a comparison between klipsch reference speakers the Rf7iii vs the RP 8000.. Are they better?
How do the project speakerbox 5 S2 and the lumina 2 compare to the monitor Audio silver 100/bronze 100? :)
Would love to see a Triangle AIO Twin review from yours. Especially with those little comparisons. Great work!
I'm hypnotized by the colour of these speakers.
You're right I had no idea. I'm going to go demo some if possible
Love the finish
These look great! I’m interested In the Lumina’s on my list of possible upgrades, as they are some of the most beautiful speakers I’ve seen, however I cannot bring myself to have a sub as I hate clutter. Is the bass really that weak for a small - medium sized room?
I found a way to improve dialogue in 2 channel system. In case some of you missed it, there is an audio setting in AppleTV force output to Stereo (disable surround sound on Chromecast). I noticed much better dialogue in contents that are designed for multichannel. I am guessing the AppleTV is now pulling the 2 channel audio from source instead of downmixing locally. It seems to affect older movie more. I am using LG C1 OLED and optical out from the TV.
Any opinions on this speaker vs the JBL L52 bookshelf speakers? Considering these two sets. Thanks!
Thank you for the great review. Great news for those who love bookshelf speakers. I hope you can also give great news for those who love floor standing speakers by reviewing their 10DS2 and 15DS2
I love how human and relatable your reviews are, and I really enjoy hearing Kristi's take. I watch some of the old videos and always get a sad face when it's just Andrew (not that I don't also enjoy his take).
Your channel is a significant factor in getting me back into the hifi hobby after a long break. Thanks!
Andrew, how do these Pro-ject speakers compare to the Q Acoustics 3050i? I know the 3050i are not bookshelf speakers but they sell at more or less the same price as the Pro-ject speakers.
I'm just impressed at how good of speakers BOTH of you are. I wish I had that talent. Subscribing now, better late than never.
@@trauma50disaster1 Thanks, I just wish I could have such well-paced conversations in my daily life
Anyone know how different in SQ the ProJect Speaker Box 5 S2 from the more expensive D model, the 5 DS2?
The green with the black grill covers makes this speaker quite stunning looking. Not in the market for new small speakers, but in a few years when they hit the used market, I might have to find a pair. Love the matching TT.......oh kept watching and the laid back sound sinks this as a possible purchase. Still like the looks though.
The green doesn’t seem to be available in Europe?
Which Center Channel Speaker would go well with ProJect Speaker Box 5 S2?
Congratulations for the review .... I would very much like you to try the Pro-ject Speaker Box 15 Ds2 ....hello
Green...!!! Yeah..!!! I would definitely be interest in the floor stander review, totally (In green ofcourse)
Hi Andrew, really enjoy your channel. Can you please share what your speaker stands are? Brand and where to source them?
Pro-Ject just released an "all on one" system with the very same turntable, the very same speakers and one of their mid range integrated for 2grand.. it is so tempting.. on the other hand: do you think such a speaker will behave well on a desk, not too far (let say one or two feet at most) from the end wall?
Very well said about your room👏💯
Wow we are simply spoiled with great reviews (thank you!) and great products these days! Having a small room and needing as much dialogue intelligibility as I can, I was leaning a lot towards the Q Acoustics Concept 30 after having seen your 50's review. I would have never thought Pro-Ject did speakers, though! They really seem to have nailed the sound, look, build quality and budget combination. Between the two, I really think there are no bad choices.
I only have around 10 inches between my tv and stand, wonder how 3 of these (L/C/R) would work? Their height is just about perfect for my setup
Good review. Hope to see a review of the Martin Logan 15i bookshelf speakers
I am still waiting to be invited around to listen to each pair of speakers! (lol) I'll start swimming from Australia.... I agree 1000% with the comments about the poster and the room.
Thanks!
Did you have the matching pillow already or did you buy it just for the shoot? You do have some of the best looking reviews out there
It would be really nice if you could review the top of the range DS2 model and compare it with this. No reviews on that one that i can find.
Hi Andrew gust ordered the 5 s2 speakers ill be using my rotel ra 1592mk to drive them an amp you seemed to like in one of your reviews i have since bought another amp I'd love you to review the advance paris a12 i think it's fantastic i use the model 5 klh speakers with it thanks love all your reviews especially hearing the elusive Kristies thoughts at the end cheers
they are beautiful!
I was all decided on the Lumina II’s for my living room, had the plan all laid out, and then these green beauties came into my life. The slightly rolled off highs while maintaining clarity make me feel like this might be the better option.
I don't believe you can make a wrong decision either way, Joe! If you're looking for the green ones seen here, be sure to use our link (desx/pinned comment) because they're impossible to find in that finish option but last I checked you they are still in stock there.
@@KristiWright awesome, thanks!
My question is since they are 55 Hz and up it’s more of a low end frequency speaker but they look so good and they also handle 150 W per channel maximum it’s possible you could use them for DTSX and THX what’s neat about these speakers is it reminds me of the sonance cinema select LCR and you can make multi channel systems from 2.1 2.2 you can add to however many channels even if you wanted 13.2 surround DTSX The possibilities are endless with something like this and I like the colors I would probably get the blue ones
I've had the chance to listen to the Pro-Ject Speaker Box 10 S2 once in a hifi store and I was very impressed. You should try those as well some time!
What are your thoughts on the Quad S2 speakers?
Have bought them based on a review from budget audiophile and really impressed. When pushed there is some port noise but they have power and finesse
*I make it through you alls videos. You guys and Zreviews I love! Andrew is really good orator, speaking of which are there any classes/lessons you have taken? man I would love to learn how to speak like that. years of hard street life - really did a number on my since of saviour fair and orator abilities.*
Always interesting to hear all the comparisons it does seem like entry level speakers just keep improving. Totally agree about as long as you keep the room consistent it will give you at least some comparison between them (if that weren’t true it would make dealer room demos rather pointless 😂)
You said that to get full range you'd need to budget for a subwoofer. I am sorry if this is a noob question. Since you'd set the crossover at 60, how important is the quality of the subwoofer?
Love Kristi's sense of humor! You guys are fun to watch! Never heard of those speakers before! Yet I see Pro-ject gear around me all the time in Europe, but mostly turntables and compact hi-fi equipment. I like what these guys do! Quite affordable and nicely made.
Intriguing. Great review. ✊🏽
Appreciate that
That green looks pretty cool. I wasn't aware Pro-Ject made speakers. Good review Andrew.
They're not known for their speakers, but after this, I think that might change!
I've grown tired of my original 600Ms and have been looking for a new pair of speakers for my retro system. Looking forward to listening to these speakers.
Would this speaker sound good with a tube amplifier?
Dare to be different. Love the green. also the matte finishes on some Triangles
Why are there no tests of the KLH Platinum 325 speakers.
Now I’m curious to see what the Speaker Box 5 DS2 brings over the Speaker Box 5 S2!
Thanks guys
Great review, love Project as a company! What are your thoughts on stereo (dual) subs for bookshelf speakers like this that clearly need the help. Would you rather use the money and just put it into something bigger and better or add subs to bookshelf’s that you really like?
Doesn't it seem as if in the last couple years, hifi audio has been getting more and more affordable? I haven't been in the hobby that long but everyone, including the dealer I bought my speakers from is saying how affordable really high end sound is becoming. My dealer specifically said he's worried he's gonna have trouble selling more expensive stuff specifically because of how good a lot these new entry level lines are.
Quality AND performance are getting well with reach of the "masses" for sure! This speaker is proof-positive of that. Thanks for tuning in!
I started out in DIY 10 years ago because I wanted to get high level speakers at a price I could afford. I think unless I got really nice DIY gear and design, buying now makes more sense for me for under $5k. Around $5k DIY you can get very high level gear from the same companies that build equipment for HiFi companies like Scan Speak and SEAS.
@@andrewrobinsonreviews what I'm finding, as someone starting out after a long time away, is that speakers are coming down in price and getting better for the money, but it's not necessarily the case for the amplifiers needed to get the best out of them, which costs more than the speaker more often. It's why I'm strongly considering a pair of kef ls50 wireless used, for about £700/£800. No way could I match that sound quality buying an amp and passive speakers for that money.
This is my observation as well, but I think this is true of consumer technology across the board. If I could sum it up, it is as though the threshold for “The Law of Diminishing Returns” is falling. That is not to say that when speaker A is exceptional, but speaker B is breathtaking, there is that audiophile dilemma; you have to ask yourself if the hundreds or thousands of dollars is worth the perceived higher level of performance. I can remember packing lunches from home so that I could afford that jump.
@@Flarptube Agreed. I remember paying $500 for a desktop in 2002, a 2022 Desktop for the same price (inflation or not), is exponential more capable. Same for TVs.
Project are putting out some good gear, lately.
Two harman kardon citation 100 or kef lsx ? :(((
this or monitor audio bronze 100?
Love the green! It takes a speaker that's otherwise rather nondescript in it's construction and makes it pop. I love my wood tones, but i could definitely see something like this gracing my bedroom, especially at this price. Well done review as per usual. And Kristi, ignore the riff raff. It's the Internet. Anonymity often encourages opinionated belligerence. Audio science and the pursuit of "perfection" is laudable, but somewhat unrealistic given none of us have perfect rooms either. That's why they have things like Dirac. You guys keep doing you and we'll keep watching. After all, as Andrew says, the only person who has to enjoy the sound of your system is who? That's right.
Andrew - Love the Energy - well produced videos - and "What Does Kristi Think" is a fantastic addition!!
Q: I have the XTZ Spirit 4 on Stands - (do you still have those in house?) and my system is in my 10x11 Office - wanting to upgrade
How do they compare to: Speaker Box 5 S2, Sonus Faber Lumina 2, Arendal and Monitor Audio Silver. -
I need to have them close to the front wall LESS THAN 12"
Looking for more detail and Dynamics at low to moderate listening levels
Running the Buchardt I150 Integrated (150 WPC), - and I have a REL T5X on hand if needed.
Thank you for all the Great Content!! - Love your New Digs - You both have GREAT STYLE!! Thanks for your time and consideration with my quest for new Stand Mounts 🙂
Really like the mat green. Good review, as always. Few women like bass the way men do, it's a real thing. I get it. There's Yin & Yang...
Fuuuuuck! Those are beautiful! Great review guys, cheers! 👍
You are such a funny,, quirky sweet couple!
Great review btw
I would love for you all to get your hands on some OJAS speakers -- very interested to hear your takes
Great review! Pro-Ject have a small subwoofer called "Sub Box 50". It will be great to see a review of this sub and a combo of both (5 S2 + Box S)! 😉
Hey Andrew, nice review as always. Bought the Kanto YUP6 as per your recommendation. I presume these Pro-Ject mean a huge upgrade, right??
I think sonically you will feel like you are hearing more detail and upper mid-range/treble presence but you will sacrifice bass.
