i love how everyone can agree that society of the snow deserved a much better recognition. the movie is a masterpiece, and did justice for the survivors. heck, even the actual survivors played a small part of the film. i was shocked that it didn't win an oscar, at least it got nominated.
To have a real shot at wining Best International Film, a key sign is multiple nominations in more than one category (like The Zone of Interest, Quiet On The Western Front, etc.). It shows that many members of the academy watched it, that it was popular, that they liked it a lot 👈🏼 All of this means high chances of a win. Come awards night, if it begins winning those tech categories, you’ve got yourself a clear Best International Film winner. When I saw that it only got the one nom, I knew this wasn’t the winner, no matter how good the film is.
The thing with Society of the snow is that it was directed trying to make justice to the real story. It's a very intense movie, but that's because the real situation was just as intense, imagine living your whole life normally and then you're caught in a plane eating people alongside friends and strangers for weeks... the thought got me hooked to the movie and left me thinking about it for days, knowing they were real people and that the events are pretty much 1 on 1 with reality made all the difference, which usually is not the case with other disaster biopic movies

disagree with society of the snow. the knowledge that this is a real event causes a level of investment where the constant intensity makes you so anxious the entire film, and you end up feeling with them - the dread whenever some new terrible thing happens, the relief at even tiny victories, and the pure joy when they see the farmer. i think the end could have been paced a bit better, it was weirdly rushed, but the film was about the humanity and connections of the survivors, not the action or drama. i think it's an incredible work of art and i do cry every time i watch it.
I really disliked Oppenheimer's editing. It just felt like I was watching a trailer for much of the movie and I struggled to get into it. I was just waiting for an actual scene to start.

I can’t get behind what you said about across the spider verse when you were reviewing boy and the heron, suggesting that across the spider verse was picked just because it’s louder. Sure that’s one aspect but hardly the main point and where were many quiet and contemplative moments along with so many themes and the meta aspect of the narrative that runs so deep in across the spider verse. Also with the animation I feel like it was just as if not more detailed than the boy in the heron, especially the when the mumbattan universe and spider society scenes show up but I digress!! Not trying to write a whole essay or anything, just saying my piece lol. Fun video tho!

I also disagree with the nomination. John Williams should've picked the better film to score tbh.
15:55 it deserves the best visuals by far. Give respect for Minus One
disagree with society of the snow. the knowledge that this is a real event causes a level of investment where the constant intensity makes you so anxious the entire film, and you end up feeling with them - the dread whenever some new terrible thing happens, the relief at even tiny victories, and the pure joy when they see the farmer. i think the end could have been paced a bit better, it was weirdly rushed, but the film was about the humanity and connections of the survivors, not the action or drama. i think it's an incredible work of art and i do cry every time i watch it.
Mad props for the two Cheeto related puns during the flaming hot section without even acknowledging them
I really disliked Oppenheimer's editing.
It just felt like I was watching a trailer for much of the movie and I struggled to get into it. I was just waiting for an actual scene to start.
I love that Karsten telling us he’s only the second most famous Karsten has apparently prompted all of us to go to his Famousbirthdays page and now he’s the most famous Karsten.
I’ve finally got around to doing this, I just have to finish the live action shorts category
What????? Maestro higher than Society of The Snow??? 😨
Boy and the Heron deserved a best picture nom IMO
absolutely. unfortunately once the oscar’s nominate it for best animated feature they feel better ruling it out 😭. happens so rarely
There's way, way too many biopics on this list. It's no surprise many of them are at them bottom.
Number one Karsten on FamousBirthdays now!
Finally someone else who recognizes that Our Uniform is better than Pachyderm.
Our Uniform is like a mini-Persepolis
When you said "for the first time ever" at the start, I thought you were gonna say you weren't sponsored by MUBI lol
I always do this every year! Please make this a tradition 🥺
Oscar? I hardly know ‘er!
Haha. Jokes like these will always crack me up
35:39 Coleman Domingo was also evil af in Zola.
I seriously didn't expect me to cry so hard watching Robot Dreams. Personally it was Best Animated Feature for my taste. Listening September never felt the same way after watching this... So glad this one got nominated.
Robot Dreams made me sob
I completely agree, May December also ended up being my clear top movie of 2023. Past Lives was close, but not flawless like May December.
Is anyone else on this asteroid city hill with me?
Personally think Sandra huller far and away deserves best actress. Best of the year in my opinion. Top 3 film of the year for me.
16:30 "why am I describing Godzilla" 😭
Diane Warren getting Oscar completionists to watch the worst movies is kind of a tradition.

Another banger by the second most famous Karsten
