Great video and glad you got the result you were after. Your reaction at Stealth said it all. I can totally relate with this issue; the antisocial factor, noise fatigue and discomfort, embarrassment for the passengers and the irritation of forced changes to the natural driving style (rev avoidance). I have a custom stainless Powerflow three silencer system on my Audi 90. It's been on there for 20+ years! Has always had terrible resonance at 2-2.5k rpm under the lightest engine load. It's a common problem introduced with a free flowing, straight through exhaust. Audi's original centre box would have been designed to target this resonance with chambers inside the silencer, no doubt. The consequence with my system is I avoid the 2-2.5k rev range where possible. It quietens down above 2.5k rpm, mercifully, but it's present at 40-55mph in top gear. A steady 70mph is quieter than 50mph! I've used my phone with a spectrum analyser app to capture the waveform. The sound wave has a visible peak (higher decibels) at around 90Hz. A low frequency which is the bassy drone. I've made some calculations to design my own Helmholtz resonator to cancel (attentuate) the soundwave at this frequency. Will try it out one day! Need to find someone willing to amend / weld my exhaust. Not got much to lose modifying the old system, I don't have spare cash at the moment and off-the-shelf aftermarket options for my car basically don't exist. I like keeping my car OEM but I'm not sure I'd want to go back to standard on the exhaust. It's finding a happy compromise... and I love to hear the inline five noise when occasionally giving it the beans. Sorry for waffling... or rather droning on ☺️
I fitted a Magnaflow muffler to my WRX holy cow it droned and sounded like a machine gun at 60mph. A Remus muffler gave great sound and no drone. My MkV gti is still stock. Not messing with it.
I love the Magnaflow on my mk6 GTI with k04 and APR DP so much, that I got one for my mk6 R. It can drone under load, but I really enjoy the sounds out of it.
A very nostalgic sound! Mk2 GTi’s had a unique bassy sound. My only suggestion would be to remove the snorkel & oval plate from the airbox to give it some mild induction note. Loved my 8v. It ended up being 155hp/153lbs.ft on Stealths rollers
A stock VAG 3 silencer system on an 8 valve is very very quiet compared to any other system ive tried to be honest. Only problem you get with a proper 8v VAG system is the lack of air flow. Which really shows on a 16v lump. Id go for a 16 valve system everytime now on any 8 valve, from the downpipe onwards of course.
Great channel, thank you for the content. I have had my Mk1 GTi since 1987 and it is currently being restored. Before finding the channel I have bought Koni Adjustables, Eibach springs, Milltek Classic exhaust and a Blaupunkt Bremen!!!! Fantastic to see all these items installed & reviewed on the MK2. Please keep the MK2 content coming.👍👍
Sounds and looks OEM to me - my 96 Astra GSI 2.0 was quite bassey with enough boom to annoy neighbours and was OEM. The tips look great and it’s such a great example given how many winters it has endured - looking forward to next video on this project 🎯👏🏆
Perfect. So obnoxious driving the freeway surrounded by loud exhaust noise. Or being in my house and hearing some loud exhaust from a car a mile distant. The guys driving these cars think they are cool, but it just screams "Chump Car". Class and power are cool, like your Milltek exhaust. Well done.
This brought back fond memories of my 1983 GTI. The improvement in performance ( and sound ) was astounding, when I installed a Bellevue Motor Sports tri-Y exhaust manifold. My Mark 6 GTI responded quite well to an AWE down pipe, connected to the stock exhaust system, and has no drone.
Would/do/have you considered an atmospheric, 'rise and drive ' onboard / POV video with this car? Perhaps even no commentary, or limited commentary. Older cars are full of character. I'm not sure if that appeals or if there's interest for it. Just throwing out an idea... Perhaps it's just me but I love going for a drive on my favourite roads, at sunrise when they're beautifully quiet. This time of year is perfect for it. Maybe I'm bonkers. I've captured a few myself, although my video and audio capture is awful. I use a dated mobile phone. One day, I'll upgrade 😎
Not a bad idea James, I need to get the project moving but a £3.5k bodyshop bill has slowed things down somewhat. I'll definitely consider rise and drive for the future though. I recently left the house at 4.40am for a Eurotunnel crossing and it was a truly magical time of day :)
One of the worst cars I’ve been in for drone was a friends restored 205 GTI. The exhaust hit a resonance at certain rpm that actually make me feel sick. It’s all about the right system for the car and loud for me certainly isn’t ‘sporty’.
Glad you like it - I'm appreciating how good Mk2 was back in the day by driving this one today - very deserving of its quality reputation back then - just look at it today 30+ years later - not good for business if manufacturers make cars last forever.
I like the Milltek sound and the undoubted quality of it, it really suits the 8v. Back in around 2001 i took my black 91 8 gti to the vw dealers to have a grnuine system fitted to replace the pattern one the car came with and it was absolutely superb in both quality and sound, giving a little pop pop pop on the overun and when gearing down too 👍. I love what you are doing with your car here Andrew, keep the progress videos coming please! 👍👍👍👍
Nice review thank you 🙂 I think the Supersprint twin pipe for the 8 valve is superb sounding and can handle a 2 box system without the middle baffle over the beam no problems. Plus the old MOT centre amazed how quiet it was. Only becomes deep booming sounding when you floor the throttle. I did have the whole system at one stage. I changed the front supersprint silencer for a straight pipe and had a baffle fitted inside. Worked better than the Supersprint and had more flow for sure. The stock system really does restrict the flow. I think the Milltek has more of a slight rasp on exit which is causing the blown exhaust type of sound on throttle. My ABF with the 8 valve Supersprint backbox, plus 2.5" open centre pipe and home made front pipe with added baffle ua-cam.com/video/sJmMzmgIgRQ/v-deo.html Supersprint all the way tho 🙂
Great content again Andrew, these 10 mins videos are perfect- I loved my red Mk2 8 valve, disappointed with the under steering mk4 but love this mk8 with my new DSG carbon paddles- keep up the excellent work.
Great Video! really enjoying the journey on this GTi, I would receommend using a product called "White Diamond" metel polish on them tips, it has a sealant and will help to keep them looking new.
Thanks Keith - I've always believed Mk2 are best kept standard when it comes to what you can see and hear. As items get replaced they will get upgraded but must still conform to the above 'OEM+' philosophy.
Sounds like oem 8v system at idle and on the road... mine is running an oe spec exhaust and sounds like that. 👍 i had a stainless 2.5" 2 box system made for my 16v last year... and it's going back in for a 3rd silencer in April... too noisy 🙈😁
Much better ! Correct height and tip spacing and returns the oem refined but sporty Mk2 8v sound ! One thing - I believe from memory the oem tailpipes were Matte black? I recall my Mk 2 16v GTi had Matte black tips from new - I had to re spray them after 12 months!
There was an era when 16v was black yes but this wasn't for very long, IIRC late small bumper era 1989? Other than that they were all silver 8v and 16v
@@volkswizard possibly a parts overhang a as mine was a facelift Mk2 16v, big bumper, no quarter lights etc, also a rhd import from Germany. The special anniversary(?) edition, forged alloys, stripy upholstery. Helios Blue met. Sniff. Damn I wish I had that car now…… 60 in second gear, 7.5k red line….
Loving this series Andrew. A great aftermarket choice IMHO. Good to see Stealth on the channel too. Nostalgia rocks - I need to own one in the future. 😊
Well done Andrew a great improvement to an already lovely car it sounds much more like they did now looking forward to seeing this one come on best wishes to you both Daniel
Thanks Daniel - indeed the Milltek is uncannily similar sounding to the original - no surprise as the guys that work there are all VW fans and many old enough to have owned them back in the day - Phil in marketing how has 2 of them!
When you had those gloves on at the beginning, I thought you were going to tackle this job yourself. Would’ve been a bit of a nightmare doing it on the floor with axle stands. Can’t beat a Miltek exhaust though, very nice.
Loved the video, thanks! I’ve got a Mk3 Colour Concept. Milltek don’t do exhausts for the Mk3! Every other Mk except 3. Such a shame cos I want to replace the system on mine and I’m struggling to find a reputable name such as Milltek. No more Magnex, Janspeed etc.
I really like the new sound it makes and the look it now has. Its like night and day different and I guess very similar to OEM exhaust. Where the tips/back box not black?
Someone else a while ago educated me to mk2 back box being black but this must have been a very limited run. Maybe 16v only. Sold 100s and don’t remember any being black as had to polish the stainless tips
It’s tricky as in reality it’s lost a fair bit of the boom at idle but is still loud as they were on the original system. TBH it’s steady cruising speed noise that matters and it’s massively better then 👍
Great video and glad you got the result you were after. Your reaction at Stealth said it all.

It sounds a lot nicer with the new exhaust 👍
What suspension is in the mk2?
What did you do with the exhaust that was removed?
Do these help emissions over older exhausts ?
Unlikely

What a difference. So much better
I had a mk3 GTi 16v with a Miltec system on and it sounded better than the porsche across the street 😎🤙🏽
Loving the Channel and new content, always find your fixed camera angle too low though
Thanks Andrew, I'll have a think about the angle, I'm possibly being lazy (or it's a flattering angle 😁)

Looks and sounds perfect. Milltek defo on my list when mine will need replacing on the Mk8.
Glad you like it. Original exhausts last ages, longer than EV batteries I bet!
This GTI sure reminds me of my MK2 and the same color blue, brings back such good memories, for me.
You have given the Mk2 extra life and sound
Thanks Ivan, if you going to preserve a car it needs to look and sound correct and Milltek allow that which is cool.

Big improvement in exhaust sound and looks in keeping with an OEM+ look
OEM+ is biggest compliment so thanks 🙌
Beautiful sound 😎🤙🏽
New exhaust sounds less raspy. Much better look. Great job.
Thanks J!
Much nicer tone on the Milltek. The old exhaust reminded me of a Sportex exhaust I had once, boomy but fun when in the mood.
Glad you like it JB. I sold the old exhaust on the day it came off so it has a market. If you have a modified Mk2 it's probably what you want.
Well done, marked improvement!
Thanks!
Sounds magnificent, really does capture the note lovely. This is a really great series, many thanks!
Glad you enjoy it!
Should have done a drive by fully sending it but regardless sound nice good video 😊
Love the milltek stuff top quality

@@volkswizard or maybe the images
I have seen the exhaust tips just need a clean?
Great I'm learning so much in these vids 👍
Glad to help
That’s a pretty decent balance I reckon, nice.
I guess it is ShyTed, Milltek promised that but I was surprised it actually delivered because I'm quite fussy and noise can make or break a car.
Rate milltek absolutely love the sound of mine!
What a lovely machine, good job!
Glad you like it!
Smooth and silky sound as it should be...😎
👏
Much better sound on that, and the tips look much better also, get some dynax on the underside next Andrew 😉
Glad you approve. Yes indeed preservation is crucial seeing as it’s so good today👍
Very nice , OEM plus .
I forgot to use that phrase, darn it 😁👍
Sounds ace 🎉
👍
@@volkswizard do you prefer this or your cupra?
All nicely coming together.
Been watching the mk5 video too...👉 👍👈
I just cant justify the price. The price man.
It’s not cheap but it aces everything so it’s just about worth it
That's so much better
👏
Much better. Like it.
Thanks Alex👍
Very loud me thinks
Much better, especially visually. It was only after seeing the new exhaust on the car that it became obvious how awful to old one was.
Big improvement

Nice car.
Thanks 👍
Sounds much better but NOT at idle I'm afraid
It’s tricky as in reality it’s lost a fair bit of the boom at idle but is still loud as they were on the original system. TBH it’s steady cruising speed noise that matters and it’s massively better then 👍

The one I never got to own...could that change? Maybe 😀
I never thought I'd own another, all I can say is if you see one on social you like, tell the owner to let you know if the time comes

I fitted the 4+E box in mine for longer 5th
