Farming and Climate Change | His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales | TEDxSustainableFoodTrust

- We stand at a critical moment in history for food and farming. During the last century, our extractive farming practices have contributed to the depletion of nature and brought us to the brink of a planetary emergency, resulting in climate change, catastrophic biodiversity decline and a crisis for public health. With half of our land now used for agriculture, farmers across the globe have become the primary stewards of nature, climate and health. Yet their delivery of public goods requires redesigning our businesses and industries away from systems based on extraction and growth and towards approaches based on the principles of regeneration, sustainability and the circular economy. During this talk, His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales shares support for an international harmonised framework for measuring farm sustainability. His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales is the eldest son of The Queen and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. Throughout the years, he has expressed a wide range of interests as reflected in The Prince of Wales's Charities, a group of not-for-profit organisations of which The Prince of Wales is Patron or President, including the Sustainable Food Trust. He has long been an advocate for sustainability in British farming, raising awareness around the main issues we face, and helping to build a more sustainable future for our food systems. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
7 minutes I listened that you can achieve ‘this’ and ‘that’ is possible.
I am trying to figure out what is ‘this’ and ‘that’, then ‘how’.
In other words, what practices are you changing in 2021? How do you measure your success?
They want complete control over the worlds food supply.
Drink less / understand more
He said a bunch of people are going to get together to establish metrics for measuring sustainable farming.
Over the years he has contributed vastly to many global environmental projects. While some might see this as 'whatever', he does spread awareness for the need of change. Which is fundamental. I'm not saying I'm right or he's right, or you're right.
Success is always slow, awareness is just the start, failure is progress.

Farming is improving exponentially all over the world. When i was a kid there were millions of people starving in India, East Asia and Africa. Today India is one if the largest food exporters, despite the population growth since then. Hand in hand more and more people and countries are out of absolute poverty.
Every day 75k people are out of absolute poverty.

You forgot to mention the elephant in the room. Most crops and farmland go to animal agriculture. One pound of beef wastes 10 to 15 pounds of plant food and 660 gallons of water. Better to eat the plants directly (and no, it's not only grass that cattle eats, it's mainly soy, grains and corn). Not to mention the methane that would be saved by reducing or better even eliminating animal agriculture.
We Dont need a global food plan. or a global anything sir. Food is local and should be left that way. . . except where starvation areas need help.

Dracula is a fictitious character I believe you are referring to Vlad the Impaler of Wallachia whom lived 560 years ago. I don’t understand how you can describe someone from a centuries old ancestor, and if you’re going to do it in the case of Prince Charles, you must do it to literally every single person alive, since if you go back far enough you have the same ancestors as everyone, for example there is at least 16 million male descendants of Ghenghis Khan who literally killed 11% of humans at the time.
What we don't need are any more idiots. Please don't join they parade.

It's nice to hear the monarchy commenting on something important. I read somewhere that Prince Charles stopped eating meat and hunting years ago and his family were upset. I guess it is still controversial for him to comment on this. I hope when he is king he will influence the government to stop giving subsidies to dairy farmers and encourage them towards more sustainable farming practices. A big reason why the British people still drink so much milk is because government policies make milk so cheap but it is not sustainable.
Screw this channel. Turned into a big propaganda piece ✌️

The biggest threat to farming is oil dependence.
Modern agriculture is dependent upon oil in 3 ways.
1. Agricultural chemicals that enhance food production 3 fold. Many of these products are made from oil and gas.
2. Farm machinery is powered by diesel (oil).
3. Transport to our local shops is also powered by diesel.
The discovery of oil peaked in 1964.
Today mankind is consuming 4 times more oil than is discovered.
This is unsustainable!
Support locally grown food by buying locally grown food.
Grow your own food.
Currently an oil crisis means a
Food crisis.
Regards Gray
Moderately true but very much debatable.
1. While biochemicals require energy to produce, it is possible to obviously run the processes through the use of renewable energy. Yes, some of the stuff is made from oil and gas, but if we can limit the oil and gas use to strictly important things such as biochemicals for food yields it would be okay.
2. Farm machinery powered by diesel. Yes, but this is down to the creative thinkers, the brains of the technological world. It is of certainty that soon agricultural machines will be run through renewable technology. It is not a matter of if but simply when. That is fact. We all know fossil fuels will run out, which is why this industry is expanding (electrical vehicle).
3. Transport. Like I said previously, the industry and the world is changing. We will see more and more electrical powered machines such as trucks, hgvs etc along with rail networks. In the future with the more accessible technology, food miles won't be of such importance as GHG emissions would be near void when networks are electric and powered by renewable sources.
We do live in an unsustainable world right now. Especially us lot. However, progress is being made. To start the renewables sector is the fundamental backbone to the future which will change everything. It just needs time and quite frankly more investment from governments and support. Yes you are right, an oil crisis would cause a food crisis along with a technology crisis if circuitry and hardware continue to relies on fossil fuels and the high pace of raw material mining.
While I share your criticisms, it is without a doubt that at least the quiet corner is changing things. I just hope, like you do, that we can progress sooner rather than later.
All the best,
Harry

Climate change is natural. The warm period is over, and sunspot activity is slowing down. As the solar minimum begins we’re looking colder temperatures for at least the next 20 years, probably longer. The last big solar minimum, the Maunder Minimum in the 1600-1700’s that lasted about 70 years will be a great indicator of what will happen.
So few people think of the next generation
These metrics would be helpful if the research didn't already illustrate that an organic plant-based food production system is lowest land use, lowest water, lowest carbon and lowest environmental impact way to deliver the planet's food supply. Our oceans are already over-exploited after fishing with 'sustainably certified' methods. Use the reduced agricultural land footprint to rewild and plant-trees to sequest carbon. In my view, it's time for action when we already know the answer rather than for well-intented frameworks.
How much force needs to be applied to achieve harmony with nature, your self, and the society?
Global food production is indeed a trust, and resource rich regions support non-productive areas. However, private farming and profit-driven markets will not offer a solution to allowing alternative and climate-sensitive farming practices. And, that says nothing about the added burden of distribution and supply obstacles. Middlemen, including the UN, have failed to be the facilitators, and experience tells us the need to find new ways. Frankly, a land trust in productive countries should be offered directly to "poor" countries who participate in food production, farming, and distribution decisions based on 2021 standards and sustainability. The problem with using existing supply chains and organizations necessarily means that we cannot eliminate for-profit or environmentally damaging practices, either drastically or gradually. Once practices are established, they cannot be removed from the operating system. What this means is that "rich" countries need to allow, no, to give up, ownership, control, and profits from (a portion of) food production, supply and distribution, in trust, to allow others to participate in every step of the global food production process, including climate change. Just like offering an embassy to foreign countries within which they make sovereign (political) decisions, so should a land trust for the practical matter of developing new and innovative systems and practices that encompass global matters, politically and practically, based on future benefits to everyone, offering a win-win-win solution. The world can no longer tolerate a model of private ownership, profit, and control with its zero-sum answers.
You don't believe your own bollocks, surely? What farming practice wouldn't survive with double the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere?
