I’ve introduced quite a few friends into golf and gotten them set up with clubs (beginner box set, 2nd hand to more advanced tech depending on budget) and when they’ve all asked about putters Ive always told them the putter is unique. It has to look, feel, and sit right to their eye and match their stroke as well. I’ve always taken putter reviews with a grain of salt because it’s a very personal choice. I will say my putting improved massively after going through a proper fitting and getting a face balanced putter that the fitter (and software) determined was a better match for my stroke as well as going down to a 33 inch shaft. Obviously you want to give yourself the best chance by controlling all the variables that you can (shaft length, grip, balance etc) but there is an element of luck in putting after all you have an imperfect object (dimpled golf ball) rolling over an imperfect surface (grains of grass on green). I’ve had good putts with good lines miss and not so good putts on not so good lines go in lol. This was a good video.
When I went to buy a new putter the worker essentially gave me a free lesson while I was deciding. He was very helpful and helped me understand some of the same things you mentioned. Very nice to have that assistance when buying
I agree with what you are saying Mark. When I upgraded my putter I tried everything from $50-$650 AUD to find what was best for me. To many people by because it has a certain brand on it. I ended up with the Scotty Cameron Squareback because of the weight. It is heavier than the other and that helps me keep it online. Use what works for you not what works for someone else
Had the Wilson 8802. Love the simple, uncomplicated look. Used one for years, and putted extremely well with it. Considering the lack of tech, don’t know how it got the results it did.
Very happy with my Ping Zing Anser style, it was a choice between that and a Scotty Newport (Birthday present from wife), when testing both putters, holed more with the ping. Did her a favour on the price difference. You are so right about getting putter fitted, at the end of the day, it’s the most important club in the bag. Yes, with speed and modern tech you can bomb it 300+ yds but the objective is to get the ball in that little hole and baring chip ins or holes in one then we will be using a putter.
Went shopping for a new Scotty, tried every putter that looked cool, after 1 hour reached a final between 2 Taylormade’s, 1 red and 1 black? After asking the pro what was the difference, he delicately explained it was the colour! So I now game the Taylormade Spider Tour Black (Dustin Johnson Spec) no lines but works for me, not been over 36 putts in 2 years.
I was fit for an Edel putter a few years back. I have a couple other putters as well. Sometimes I switch them up just for a change. Those Cobra putters do look interesting.
Thanks for the video Mark! I recently was fitted to the Ping 2021 Tyne 4 and I absolutely agree with you, the face on the putter is butter smooth. I feel like I can put the exact amount of energy I want into the golf ball just about every time.
I’ve never had any confidence using anything but a mallet style putter. Switching to a milled mallet style putter really helped me. Using a Scotty Cameron Flowback 5
Got a putter fitting towards the end of last year and ended up at the total opposite of where I was (ping anser) with the Scotty Cameron phantom x 12.5. Since then I have seen a drastic reduction in my three put percentage and am no longer afraid of putting which has saved a number of my rounds!! Great video as always Mark!!
I watched this video because I was interested in what you had to say and not because I need a new putter (I have only gamed 1 putter, an Achusnet Bullseye 35B mallet). I agree with what you had to say about what feels good in your hands and what looks good at address, these qualities will help one relax and put a better stroke on the putt. There was one thing I thought you should have mentioned and that is ball position, when I first started I had a bad habit of having the ball in the middle of my stance and therefor I would hit the putt with a descending blow, putting backspin on the ball. One day an elder gentleman noted this and suggested I play the ball a little more forward in my stance and hit the putt with an ascending blow, getting the ball rolling faster and not skidding. Just my two cents ( 2 pence) worth. Well done video as always.
This is a great "puttorial". Been rocking my EVNROLL mallet and I'm definitely loving it. I think down the road I'll definitely go in for a putter fitting, but when I'm off on the pace control I just chalk it up to me. Golf is such a personal sport... and it's one of the reasons why I really enjoy it!
I never liked the original two ball. The "balls" were useless to me for alignment purposes. I know they made a version with a line though the balls and I probably would have liked that, but the new R-Ball is what I bought. It's really a nice putter. Again, the ball on the back is useless to me, but the lines before it are just what I need.
With the idea of length being what they are today, thank you Bryson. I actually @6'2" tall feel better with a 32" putter then a 35". I hole more putts being over the ball more. Odessey oworks 1, 32" length, added 40 grams of weights. Love it! Great video mark
Excellent points that 99% of us never even think about. Amazing how both the physical grip (the edges or lack of edges and size) and the way you put your hands on the grip can affect start line. And then there's the rabbit hole of how biomechanics can play into all of this. The point is to test, test, and test. Do many options means lots of testing.
Discussion at 11:50-14:00 is 100% me. Swapped 20 year old RAM Zebra for newly fitted Ping Tyne 4 just like Mark was using and the roll out on mishits is transformational in terms of 3 putt avoidance. The other major improvement is head stability
Had a putter fitting having previously had an Odyssey with quite a bit of toe hang which I bought on a whim from ebay. The putter fitting put me into a Ping Tyne 3 due to the arc of my putting stroke. Found it a really useful experience and started to make a bit of a difference to my scoring last year.
I recently had an arm lock fitting at the Ping facility Gainsborough despite it being a fabulous day I didn’t get on with the Bryson DeChambeau method. It would take a lot of practice and time to master so back to my Scotty Cameron studio design 3.5 can’t beat feel and consistency.
Fantastic video Mark, really thought provoking. Have shared with friends I play with who are new to golf. I had a putter fitting a few years back and it made an instant noticeable improvement to my scores. I cannot recommend it enough.
I went from my old ping anser putter to a odyssey ten this year and it has improved my putting stats. Took a little getting used to but worth the effort.
I've just had my first putter fitting and as I suspected I'm better with Anser style of putter. So a new Scotty Newport 2 is going in the bag 😁 Great video as always Mark 👊
Must be nice to have a putting green in your backyard and numerous clubs to try and test at your disposal! Wish I was in your shoes mark! Keep up the great content!
I was cleaning out my back poch just this morning and found my old Scotty Cameron studio 1 putter I haven't seen in years. I have no clue how it got behind my wall but I'm on cloud nine now that I found it.
Great vid. I love a proper putter test session. I was fitted a couple of years ago with a Ping Strong Arc, but over time my stroke has changed and I recently sam labbed to an odyssey face balanced. So definitely agree with your thoughts that things change. I had a session on the putting green with the pro looking on and my grip had moved slightly and become weaker which equalled misses and pace inconsistencies. So be mindful that its you and the putter in alignment.
The grip can make a massive difference too. I just put a golf pride tour snsr mid size contour grip on a scotty newport 2.0. And 6 grams of lead tape weight to the head. I was about to ditch the putter for a more face balanced option but thought why not try that first. Last round I had 23 putts. 10 on front 9 and 13 on back 9. Huge difference in feel and distance control
mallet. That's my putter of choice. Weight and eye. Not too opposing and the mallet putter has been my go to since my junior days. Feel is weighted and completes a single stroke.
Just tried that Ping yesterday. It was the best feeling off the face of any putter I've ever tried, and I instantly hit the ball really well. I just need to find a shop that has all the different head shapes so I can test them all. I'm still going to try out some other brands, but there's a good chance a Ping will be my next putter.
Just finally got my holy grail putter in Scotty Cameron 5W And man it’s a massive change from my Newport 2 but I love it. First couple rounds I feel like I’m making more putts.
Putted with a mallet style for 25 years. I've never been a good putter. Terrible pace, but good line. Tried an old Ping Pal from 1977 and have been putting lights out for the last 4 rounds. I can't explain why it works for me. It just does. Getting a full bag fitting soon, so maybe they can tell me. 🤞
I have an Odyssey O works 2 ball. After a few months I wasn't sure I had made the right choice, then all of a sudden it started to feel right. Don't believe I will ever change now.
I just found an odyssey red dot mallet putter at my pga store on clearance. Discontinued club, I guess? Didn't even have a price tag. Hadn't planned on buying a putter, but I was sinking absolutely EVERYTHING with this putter! I had to nab it. It's automatic from 5 feet and closer.
Great video Mark - so many variables! Have never done a putter fitting but should/will. Could you do a video on green reading with focus on influence of grain please?
Would like to see an armlock video vs standard. When I tried an armlock my strike location was so much better. Would be curious if it helped the beginner/amateur golfer more than the experienced as well
That’s brilliant stuff Mark. I’ve recently started putting terribly with a odyssey mallet style putter. Has a soft face but I’m 3 putting regularly which isn’t great off 8 ! I except it’s part set up but I think it’s time for a change 👏🏻👍🏻
had a putter fitting two years ago, got fit for a Scotty Fastback, roll the putter fantastically but could use better pace control. Fitting was on a Quintix machine, numbers were all blue and green....just need more practice.
Went from a blade to a heavier mallet putter and I find it’s much better on longer putts but I sometimes feel like I lack a little finesse on the short, slippery putts. I’m going to try to put some counter weight in the grip to see if that helps.
I started with a Ping Karsten, then went onto TM Spider for years, tried Bettinardi and others. Back to the Ping, tried a new Anser, then went back to my Odyssey 2 Ball, but mallets seem to struggle on slow greens, going to put the Ping Karsten back in the bag. Never sell a putter that you have some success with. Finding a putter you’ll never change is like finding the watch you’d always wear...nigh impossible!
I switch between my ping sigma 2 Kushin C and my Cure RTx3. I will try that new ping once I get to my local store. Great information! I am looking forward to you and Coach doing the series with getting students down in handicap again.
I've just swapped to the tour responce from the tp5 mainly due to the feel when putting. I still think the Tp5 is the best ball I've ever played....might have to have a re-think. Thanks for the comparison 👍
Upgraded from my trusty odyssey tuttle to a ping anser 2 recently as I love the blade look, but have averaged 2-3 more putts per round. I might have to switch back soon 😭
I was really hoping to see and hear more about the Axios putter. I am really intrigued by the technology. Would love to see you review this putter sometime in the future. Good video as usual. I practice using a modified procedure than what you were doing. I use a gate to swing my putter head through and then get the ball to go through the PuttOut gate several feet in front of me.
I have an Odyssey Two Ball arm lock putter, a very high stability, high MOI putter and it's amazing how much the ball still jumps left and right if I mishit the ball. Very surprising. And yet I manage a classic Bullseye putter pretty comfortably. Mishits don't seem that much different.
I have a cheapo conventioanal old putter that works wonderful no brand. I had a ping small mallet and gave it back to friend. Love to have a classic Scotty Cameron with big square grips.
Hi Mark. Great video. I went for a putter fitting the other day and bought a new putter. As a very high handicapper, I chose a putter with a large head & high MOI, as it felt like the putter, of the few I tried, that gave me the most control of pace and direction. The “fitting” though consisted of no more than me standing at one end of a PuttOut matt and trying to putt into a PuttOut pressure putt training aid at the other end. Should I expect more than this from a putter fitting? I definitely bought what I felt was the best putter for me on the day but it didn’t feel like a very scientific process to get there.
Edel has a lot of stuff to say about how different people react to different line up lines on different parts of the putter. 1 line vs 3 vs a dot for example. Very interesting geek stuff.
I got a second hand odyssey 2 ball and used that for a while. Bought a thicker blade like the Newport but it didn't suit me, went back to the 2 ball. Can't see me changing it, as you say the feel goes a long way in how confident you feel with it..
I’m sure that as a 14 hc I should be using a more mallet style, however my eyes just really like the answer style blade, just feels right, currently using the frontline no 4 , but considering going into either a Scotty or Toulon, but that’s just because I like nice things 😆
I’ve always felt that you will putt better when you use a putter that suits your eye. A mallet *might* work a bit better but if you don’t like the looks of it, in my experience, you won’t putt any better.
I have an oil can 90s sc studio number 2. It has a sight line, but I line the ball up against the toe, (the sight line nearly all below the ball". I just think I feel the ball better for pace, while If I use the site line, I struggle with feel due to the sweet spot. I also remember seeing photos of seve in a classic ping style, he lined up with ball all at the heel with the toe of putter completely off the ground...
I decided a couple of years ago to sell all my putters (blades mainly) and went for a fitting. Ended up with a mallet Evnroll ER5b and it’s the best thing I ever did. Very guilty of swapping putters weekly but now my putting is so much better.
This was super interesting for me and I literally just had a putter fit two weeks ago. Not joking either I have also been using the Wilson 8802 for many years as well for similar reason, Mr Crenshaw!!! I love the 8802 and when I'm on with it I never three putt unless I've had a really bad read. But also when I'm off with it my lag putting was horrible. Interestingly enough from my fit the info that fell out was my face control was good, tour level good(the fitters words not mine) but I was skipping the ball and it was digging in before achieving a smooth roll, my loft was too low @3.5° went up to 4.5° and presto much more consistent distance control. Thus made complete sense as starting the ball online was never an issue and I have a very high success rate at holing from 3-5feet. I tried many models and the one thing that I need to feel in my stroke was the weight of the blade, the 8802 is heavy, one of the things I loved about it. So most were too light for example the oddessy and ping felt great but too light, they felt like they were wandering on my take away so the feel wasn't there. The only one I tested that felt good and achieved the numbers was the Scotty fastback 1.5 tho it was still a little light, so they sent it back and I had the weights changed from 2x15g to 2x20g and it feels amazing already the confidence it has given me over the 8802 on longer putts is worth its weight in gold!! More people really need to watch you video on this and I think you should make more on putters in general, it's the most used club in your bag every round without fail so why do some not pay it the respect it deserves!!! Sorry for the long comment but just wanted to share my eye opening experience to how much you can improve by having a proper putting analysis and fit!! My advice spend that money on a custom fit putter instead of this year's new driver, your handicap will thank you!!
I look at the Wilson and I think, I love that putter. I listen to the comments and I think, I am glad I have something else!
I want an 8802. Wtf , not making any putts anyway.
Paul you have won the shot scope please message me on Instagram or Facebook. Just let me know when you have messaged. WINNNNNER
@@MarkCrossfield hi Mark great just sent you a message on messenger

Best review I’ve now seen from you or any other UA-camr on any club. Refreshing open mindedness, and so helpful, and so honest.
Thanks David
I agree with what you are saying Mark. When I upgraded my putter I tried everything from $50-$650 AUD to find what was best for me. To many people by because it has a certain brand on it. I’ve really been enjoying these more thoughtful videos, Mark. Not just plowing through lines on a Trackman, but talking about the big picture.
I really fancy trying the new Cobra putters
1970's ping answer is still my favourite. Good video. Thanks
Cleveland Frontline, great grip and feel of the putter face
I’ve used a wooden headed putter for 11 years. I love it. Had it built to the specs I wanted at the Pittsburgh Golf show in 2010.
Had the Wilson 8802. Love the simple, uncomplicated look. Used one for years, and putted extremely well with it. Considering the lack of tech, don’t know how it got the results it did.
Because it isn't the arrow, it's the Indian...

I just bought a Cleveland FRONTLINE ELEVADO SINGLE BEND PUTTER. Had great reviews and center weighted for my swing style.
Literally thinking about what putter I was going to get today. This video is perfectly timed, thank you
The new cobra putters look awesome, I can't wait to see where the 3d printing takes the industry.
Have gone back to using my dad's old Ping Anser from the 80s because I can't find anything I like better... and I'm in my 40's!!
I've just had my first putter fitting and as I suspected I'm better with Anser style of putter. So a new Scotty Newport 2 is going in the bag 😁 Great video as always Mark 👊

Great video, Mark! I finding putting such a dark art. I practice a lot but it can just vanish on me. That new ping looks really nice
I've gone back to my 48" White Ice like Adam Scott putter because it's hard for me to practice putting with a bad back. It gets the job done.
Ping anser style putter for a long time now 🤷♂️I like it no fuss and simple
Never had a putter fitting but will surely have it in mind for my next putter
Just tried that Ping yesterday. It was the best feeling off the face of any putter I've ever tried, and I instantly hit the ball really well. I just need to find a shop that has all the different head shapes so I can test them all. I'm still going to try out some other brands, but there's a good chance a Ping will be my next putter.
Still using my Odyssey Versa #1W for a few years now. Might take a look at new putters or get myself a putter fitting once lockdown ends 🤞🤞🤞.
A nice new ShotScope would be awesome.
Actually in the market for a new putter, Mark, so this video was very well timed.
Great work as always.
Just finally got my holy grail putter in Scotty Cameron 5W And man it’s a massive change from my Newport 2 but I love it. First couple rounds I feel like I’m making more putts.

Changed from a traditional blade til the Toulon Atlanta mallet no fitting but love the outcome from that change.
Very interesting indeed. The Bryson SIK putter is showing up more and more
Another excellent tutorial. 👍 Watching you hit the Arm Lock putter makes me think I need to try one. 😀
Thanks 👍
I switched from a Yes Callie putter to a PXG Gunboat last year. Started to sink far more putts. Went from 21hc to 14hc.
Great video Mark - so many variables! Have never done a putter fitting but should/will. Could you do a video on green reading with focus on influence of grain please?
Would like to see an armlock video vs standard. When I tried an armlock my strike location was so much better. Would be curious if it helped the beginner/amateur golfer more than the experienced as well
Nice discussion on putters! I fancy a custom fit however am currently putting well so don’t want to change for the sake of it. 🤞 long may it continue!
Love this video because I’m thinking of changing my putter soon. Also love the masters bags 👍🏌🏻♂️⛳️

Great channel. Awesome you can be serious and scientific and helpful vs fun with the boys on the course vlogs
I had a putter fitting, just because. But ended up getting an Evnroll mallet and I love it. I took out a nice Scotty.
Enjoyed the video as always informative
Just bought a new 2 ball. Only used it once. I like it so far.
Been using a 2 ball odyssey for about 3 years now, best putter I've ever had,
Just tried the Ping Tyne C, it does feel great!
PLEASE review the new Ping Harwood!! you would be the first on YOU Tubes. Its the Battleship of putters and its incredibly accurate!
Cobra sport 45 has been a game changer for me
Always wanted to try shotscope 👍🏻👍🏻
Go for it!
Very interesting, been loving my double wide stroke lab it’s kind of the best of both worlds for me.
I got a Odyssey Sabertooth years ago and love it! Heavier putter and such a sweet design.
I switch between my ping sigma 2 Kushin C and my Cure RTx3. I will try that new ping once I get to my local store. Great information! I am looking forward to you and Coach doing the series with getting students down in handicap again.

Upgraded from my trusty odyssey tuttle to a ping anser 2 recently as I love the blade look, but have averaged 2-3 more putts per round. I might have to switch back soon 😭
Wonderful... comforting stuff! Heartstrings pull for the old Wilson... but heartstrings don’t do much for my hdcp.
And this my friends is a very well educated putter fitting lesson
I was really hoping to see and hear more about the Axios putter. I am really intrigued by the technology. Would love to see you review this putter sometime in the future. Good video as usual. I practice using a modified procedure than what you were doing. I use a gate to swing my putter head through and then get the ball to go through the PuttOut gate several feet in front of me.
I had a putting fitting about 5 years ago, think was more about selling a putter, only thing fitted was length
If they didn't put you on a SAM lab device they you are correct
I found that the length played more of role in my putting.bI now use the Yes putter 33" length.
I'm 6'1" and use a 33". It's more about where my eyes end up when I'm over the putt. I couldn't properly align it with longer putters.
Just got the Ping 2021 Anser putter. Love it! Big Anser fan
Bought the 21 ping. Loved the feel but returned it to stick w Scotty. Missed the feel so much went and rebought.
Taylormade FCG Spider, best putter I’ve ever tried.
I love your content. Winters are too long here in Winnipeg 🥶
Aye fellow winnipeger
@@nickmulvey830 Hello there! At least we get four months of great golf weather. What are your favourite Winnipeg-area courses?
@@mcmillanalex favourite have to be granite hills, pinawa and minnewasta. All obviously out of town. What about you?
Edel has a lot of stuff to say about how different people react to different line up lines on different parts of the putter. 1 line vs 3 vs a dot for example. Very interesting geek stuff.
I got a second hand odyssey 2 ball and used that for a while. Bought a thicker blade like the Newport but it didn't suit me, went back to the 2 ball. Can't see me changing it, as you say the feel goes a long way in how confident you feel with it..
working hard on technique at the moment with the spider, I feel as though straight back and straight through helps me personally.
First thing I do is set a putter behind the ball to see how straight or flat it sits. I think that’s why I like 1/2 shaft offset putters
I was fitted form my PXG Mustang I average 27 puts per round. That me . I recommend a putter fitting for your game
Like the look of both Cobra putters but definitwly need to get out and try them
I’m sure that as a 14 hc I should be using a more mallet style, however my eyes just really like the answer style blade, just feels right, currently using the frontline no 4 , but considering going into either a Scotty or Toulon, but that’s just because I like nice things 😆
Luck to go to Ping in Pheonix, Arizona and got fitted love my putter!
Great video. Thanks for all the info.
