Huh, I work at the front door of an ER and don't get uncomfortable at all when people are covered in blood in front of me. In fact I'm so calm people find it off-putting.
Side note though, if it's a friend or family member I can't look at it. I am the opposite of calm and collected and get nauseous.

I gave birth in the ER and it was crazy. Luckily, this was like my third child so you know by then I pretty much knew what I was doing thank god. It was pretty funny, watching everybody slowly freak out when they ran in my room and saw the baby crowning while I was yelling I have to push. I could swear the entire ER was in my room at one point and I did not give a shit.
This is why the hospital in my hometown built a new labor and delivery building right across from the hospital so pregnant women didn't have to suffer in the er. You just drive straight to labor and delivery and you'll know the whole building is equipped with people who are specialized in this. Also it's really cool how it even has a hallway that connects both buildings so if baby has extra issues it's just a quick wheel from labor and delivery to pediatrics in the main hospital.
The hospital with my 3rd had a separate triage area and entrance for maternity and L&D. Which is the only reason she wasn't born in the ER. But when they realize there isn't time for monitors your room still gets really crowded, really fast. I don't think there were nearly as many people in the room with either of my first 2.
ER: "Quick, we need an adult!"

I know an ER nurse who says that she knows there’s no time left and she’s going to have to deliver when the mom-to-be just starts undressing. Apparently, it’s a very primal thing that kinda takes over, when it’s time it’s time and moving them isn’t an option.
My grandma showed up to the ER with my dad in her arms and just yelled “Another one is coming!!” 😆 They put my dad in a baby warmer and got my uncle out post hast

Where i gave birth we are actually told to enter at the emergency entrance, they have like a valet taking the car and they get pregnant woman on a wheelchair and bring to the triage room at L+D.
Depends on your hospital’s procedure, but yes, after 20 weeks just go to L&D for any pregnancy related problem.
At many hospitals it’s less. Mine was 10 weeks
Or most places I’ve traveled to, it doesn’t have to be pregnancy related. After a certain # of weeks, all pregnant pts are (in our minds) carrying the worlds deadliest incendiary device and we want NOTHING to do with you!! Let the charge nurse’s fight it out!

@@Veronica24296 Are you pregnant? Is your complaint above or below your waist? Are you bleeding from someplace other than your vagina? Do you have a fever? Some things above the waist may be pregnancy related, like some headaches, visual changes, or heartburn. But if you’re far enough along to look pregnant, the ER is likely to send you to the OB department on general principals. I once had a non English speaking patient run up to L&D in a wheelchair by an ER nurse. A translator determined the woman was fine, she’d just come in to visit someone.
I had to give birth IMMEDIATELY in the ER. They did great. Great. Pretty much happened like this. My mother drove me up to the ambulance enterance ran inside told them my daughter is about to have a baby. They ran outside. Helped grab me up and pushed me in on a stretcher one nurse pulled off the combat boots i was wearing lol and put a blanket on me and as SOON as they stopped the stretcher in the room i couldnt help but push and my baby just popped out of me and they yanked him up and cut the cord and handed him over after they did a few things to him. They didnt have a labor and delivery at that hospital. I had to be transported across the city to a different hospital a few hours later. But they did so good for never doing the 2 for 1 special. Lol they werent my first choice, of course, but the streets had iced over and my mom was driving 10mph and we couldnt make it any farther. I was trying to hold the baby in and that doesnt really work....

I was born at a hospital but the drs and nurses told my mom she wasn’t ready then left moment later my dad caught me.
Years later my mom said I think I’m in labor I’m gonna take a quick shower. Got out said I’m not gonna make it call the ambulance. Then the ambulance pulled over on the side of the freeway and my baby brother was born on the side of I90 in an ambulance 😂😅

One of my coworkers told me that, with her first child, they told her she was going to be there for a while. She was like “no, he’s coming fast, don’t go anywhere doc”. He left and 20 minutes later the doc was being rushed away from his lunch because baby had decided he was being delivered express. Doc got there just in time to see dad to catch baby. They were there for all of 2 hours before little James was informing the world that he wasn’t happy about being evicted from his cozy spot.

Midwife said the same thing to my parents, that I’d be a while and went down the street to check on another lady in labour. My father got to catch me. 😂

Labor & Delivery Triage is a godsend. My doctor called them ahead, and she told me to go to the children's hospital to get checked in. Help was immediate and everyone there was on top of their game. 👍

I was 7 months pregnant and had my first (and so far only) kidney stone and thought I was having contractions. I was throwing up from the pain and went to the ER and they sent me to L&D SO FAST. Thankfully nothing serious, but they we’re definitely panicked 😂

Yeah. ER doctors will only deliver babies themselves unless it is an absolute last-resort emergency. Either they rush you up to L&D ASAP or they have someone from L&D race down at a full sprint. lol

I had my son during covid and went in after hours. As soon as I said my water broke the ER called up to L&D. A nurse RAN down to get me 😂 we left so fast I didn't even have time to say bye to my husband or grab my purse!
Man that had to suck. I felt terrible for anyone having a baby during lockdown not being able to have a support system must've been terrifying. My mom didn't have one with my oldest brother and she was petrified. I hope you're okay!

When I called my after hours obgyn on Saturday with high BP, they actually told me to go straight to L&
D instead of the ER and already let them know I was coming. At 27 weeks the MD admitted me without even seeing me (was delivering a few babies at the time).
That makes sense though. Pre-eclampsia.
But the er should be able to handle a pregnant lady having rhe flu without sending her to l&d.
So we did a c-section in the ER years ago on a lady who had been ejected from the car and landed on her head. That sweet little girl survived and is probably a teenager now living with her grandma the last I heard. I have to say, that ER doctor ran that code like a conductor running a symphony and it was the most smooth and beatiful thing. I was quite proud of our little rural hospital that day and the fact that at least 4 seperate departments came together quite smoothly to save that little girl's life. I almost cried when the OB nurse said she was alive and we heard the baby cry😢
I love how it seems like they're really sitting next to each other really agreeing and of the same mind. Really shows medical comraderie

With my recent baby, they sent me from l&d to the er just to go back to l&d. I was 15 mins away from giving birth in the lobby 😂

At 20 weeks + 1, we had to go to labor and delivery. All is well, but we learned that it’s definitely harder to find among all the hospital buildings than the ER. 😬 So even if your due date is far away (or you’re planning a home birth), make sure you know where it is early on. 😅
Yes! I was 6 weeks pregnant when and googled if i could find a video of the hospital that explained where it was 😂 i did found one too at the hospital website. Guess they do want to prepare you good 😅

Luckily in my hospital it was easy to find and I’d gone in a few days before to get an iron transfusion. The birth centre where I had her was harder to find though and my partner nearly missed the birth because of it. Very quick birth so I don’t blame him at all😅
I wonder if they make it harder to get to in most hospitals to cut down on the risk of baby stealing or like in America active shooters

I wish L&D just took pregnant women from the beginning like 6-7 weeks when I was dying of nausea every time. Those ER drs literally have no clue about pregnancy. They’d do what they could but I would always argue on what medicine would work and they’d never want to give it to me. Well until the nausea would be so bad they didn’t have a choice. Our L&D won’t take you until 20 weeks I believe. But my OBGYNs are always way more chill about pregnancy and medication than the ER drs I’ve dealt with.
Most them are not trained for pregnancy related stuff unfortunately :)

My grandmother’s favourite story is that when she went into labour with my mom, my granddad was away in the next town over doing some military thing they wouldn’t let him get out of so her sister’s husband had promised to drive her to the hospital where my granddad would meet her. Well, this man proceeded to drive her to the entrance to the ER and then left as soon as she got out of the car 😂
In our er we always check a pregnancy in because you never know. Something very serious could be happening and they might need help immediately. We are told this by our cea. So the person who literally runs the whole thing. If you’re going into labor please do not go into the er because we’re specifically trained for that lol. However emergencies do happen and everyone has the right to be seen by a doctor

At our hospital we HAVE to go to the emergency room first. But once you tell them and wait for a minute (and you’re over I think 12 weeks (not 20 here) they’ll call L n D to wheel us up. But goddd I’ve had 5 so far and the last time they shut even more entrances to the hospital down and I was in active labor driving around trying each fcking entrance! The labor and delivery entrance CLOSED, the general entrance CLOSED, Last place to go… ER thankfully OPEN . Then still had to wait in line then also for them to call labor delivy AND for them to come down… all of which are a long time when you’re trying not to make any pain sounds etc 😅 then I still had to be hooked up and monitored to see if I WAS in labor… nah 🤷🏻♀️ I was only 6cm and birthed an hour later. That’s all. 😅

What alot of peoplendont get i think is that gettig kicked in the nuts starts to fadelabor dosent. Its like getting kicked in the nuts but the apex of that pain just keeps going so your debilitated

I was in the ER a couple weeks ago, and from my bed I saw a pregnant woman in a wheelchair being wheeled by a nurse. From what I overheard, they were on their way up to labor and delivery. You could see the excitement and fear and happiness all on the mother’s face. I hope her and baby are doing well.

Can y’all in L&D TELL US WHAT DOORS TO COME IN WHEN WE POP?! I was never told!! Embarrassed myself walking in the front doors, had to be escorted across the hospital while having contractions, after i’d driven myself there. I went to my ward tour, even got to do some birth plan-paperwork, but was never told how to come in when its time.

When i had my first (planned induction thpugh not planned C section) i had to go through the ER because the main entrance was closed at that time. They were so sweet checked me in while calling L&D then got wheeled up to the 5th floor.

I was 28 weeks along when I was in a wreck and taken to the ER. They had an L&D nurse brought down to monitor me until I was cleared by the ER and the OB. I was cleared and sent home a few hours later. He was born 10 weeks later and is now 22 years old.

I got to deliver 2 babies as a medic and it was the best experience on the job that I ever had.
The ER took me in at 17 and a half weeks because I felt like something was wrong. They did an ultrasound, no pelvic exam, saw that it looked fine and sent me home. Later that day I was emitted to the hospital and ended up having to give birth, losing our little boy. It all could have been prevented if the ER just sent me to L & D where the true experts are. By the time I made it to L & D, 16 hrs. later, it was too late for an emergency cerclage.
So sorry for your loss. ❤️

My mom delivered me with an er doctor. Her OB didn't believe she would have her second faster that the 6 hours it took to have her first and didn't rush to the hospital. I am told he was in the parking lot when i was born 😅. Bet the ER enjoyed that delivery!

At every Dr appointment she ask me if for any reason you need to go to the hospital where should you go (straight to the labor and delivery floor NEVER the ER)

I went to the ER when I was only 3 or 4 weeks pregnant. They helped me so much and did not send me to labor and delivery. They did question my baby daddy. Turns out it was the technician the day before at a different hospital who had done an internal sonogram on me and caused some bleeding and pain. I was fine and so was my baby girl. Ladies always deny those internal sonogram they just hurt worse than anything. The less sonogram the better. Remember when you are pregnant you can still advocate for your care regardless if a professional says this is what has to be done. Trust your body and your intuition.

I always have to call up to OB and figure out what they want to do bc we have had pregnant people be seen for things in the ER that are unrelated to their baby such as dental pain.

Best crossover episode in history
I would recommend the book (audiobook too!) “In Shock” by Dr. Rana Awdish. She’s an ICU doc who was pregnant and started to show symptoms like confusion, lightheadedness, and RUQ pain - her friends (also doctors) eventually rushed her to the hospital where she was immediately brought into L&D even though she, as a physician and the patient, was positive it wasn’t related to her pregnancy.
Spoiler: She had hepatic tumors that had ruptured and she lost so much blood (they thought she had HELLP syndrome or Sheehan) that she did end up losing her baby, and her tumors went undiagnosed for a long time as well.
Her story just feels really really relevant to this conversation and we had to read it in medical school - it’s very emotional and very good at pointing out the flaws in our ED intake/flaws in the medical system. 10/10 read.
My 2nd and 3rd deliveries were a piece of cake. Literally, 5 and 8 pushes, and they were out.

@@succyamum4127he is not a doctor, neither is he a nurse. He's a fraud. His assumptions are not any more accurate than anyone else's - not to mention that the subjective experience of pain is just that, subjective, and thus it is not possible to accurately compare pain between two separate human beings. You can only really compare pain you've already experienced with the pain you're experiencing now. Since it deals with subjective experience and memory (which is certainly not perfect) it's not a very reliable method and for sure not a scientific one.

When my wife was pregnant this was actually a question we asked, because we had heard about this and wanted to see if it was true or not, the OBGYN we had told us word for word, “ER’s are absolutely terrified of pregnant people, and will send you to labor and delivery anyway, so your best bet is to start there”
I had random bleeding at 27 weeks. I went to the ER and spent about 2 minutes in the waiting room because they brought me to labor and delivery for monitoring

I almost had my middle child in the er. I was walking through to get to the elevator to get to labor and delivery. The look on the teenage girl's face in the waiting room at 1:48 am was priceless. She might be scarred for life...
Can confirm this. I worked as an EMT for many years, and the ER does NOT want us there. We'd always immediately get told to run up to L&D, lmao.
When I was 25 weeks with my third, I started having issues with my liver and my enzyme levels spiked to the point I couldn’t keep anything down. I was also in so much pain they couldn’t get the monitor on my stomach to check my baby’s heartbeat or to see if I was having contractions. They ended up sending me to a medical center in the nearest city where I sat in the ER for most of the day until they sent me up to a ward that was NOT the maternity ward. I was in a room with 3 other people, the youngest of which was probably the same age as my grandma.
I wish my ER was that way! I was 28 weeks pregnant, came in an ambulance, bp was 215/190, having stroke symptoms but on my right side (Couldn't talk, tongue felt swelled, and couldn't move my right arm)... I sat in the waiting room for 2 hours in a wheelchair. My suspicion is that I described it to the EMS as an allergic reaction and panic attack. (The only things I had experience with). Left there with my parents and the 2nd ER said I was just dehydrated and gave me fluids.
In my city, we have a specific maternity emergency room. If you have an emergency when pregnant, you go there. Its a very good set up

Yeah, this is absolutely true. I work in ER Admissions and the first thing i have to ask when a pregnant patient shows up at my desk is "How far along are you?" If they are 20 or more weeks, i have to get on the radio to get a nurse to get her info and take them to L&D.

When my sister was in labour with her daughter she almost gave birth in the ambulance on the way to the hospital, she scared the crap out of the paramedics she was that close , that was almost 7 years ago

My teacher wasn't supposed to teach that but the class kept asking her what they should do if that situation arises.
I always skipped the ER and called labor and delivery to go there right away lol
I almost had a miscarriage at 17 weeks. The way they yelled at Labour and Delivery to hurry up nearly killed me 😂
I went to the er at 10 weeks pregnant with pregnancy related problems. I was discharged without being told and waited over 25 hours before an ob team member was called. I was considered high risk and they nothing for me. I was ignored and staved, they put me in a room and never checked on me, they didn’t even have nurses where they put me to check on me. It was the most traumatic part of my pregnancy. My doctors told me with any other pregnancy problems just go to labor and delivery for now on.
I'm so glad things have changed significantly from when I was born. I'll be 42 next month, my mother was not in active labor yet but her water had broke so she was checked into L & D, the nurse took her to the bathroom then took my dad to fill out paperwork & just left her there alone. She was in the bathroom when her contractions started & they were so bad they immediately brought her to the floor, she had no bell or call button nothing & she was almost fully dilated before they came back to find her trying to get up by climbing the wall so I was nearly born on a hospital bathroom floor 🤢
I was born in the ER. My dad had stopped to help an elderly couple with a flat tire on the way to the hospital so my mom had just enough time to get in there and the nurse didn’t believe that she was that far into labor. Apparently the whole ordeal scarred a man who was waiting to be seen.
I delivered my first baby in the ER; my labor was taking kinda long so the dr left to set a broken arm and I was left with a resident nurse overseeing 3 women in labour. We all ended up fine and nothing scares me anymore 😂
Makes me think of a story I heard about a speeding car that got pulled over. Turns out it was a man who’s wife was in labor and she got her contractions when they got pulled over. So, the cop, who was like 25, had to help her deliver the baby! He was freaking out more than the parents. 😂
